Spring had arrived, and with it brought the yearly Flower Festival, when a herd full of cold-dwelling brutes came together and threw flowers at each other. At least, that's how Muiris saw it.
Sure, there were fights and weddings and this and that going on as well, but Muiris was mainly bothered by the enormous amount of flowers. He never understood why this was such an event, but he participated anyways as a way to.. "mingle." He stood under the spring sun, his red tinted eyes half-lidded in content as the mid-day rays warmed his backside. He made an effort to look presentable..ish, at least. What used to be his father's favorite green cloak laid neatly across his withers, lined with the thick fur of a wolf and edged with sparkling gold threading. He didn't care for it much, but he knew his father always always made it a point to wear it to outings such as this. It was the least his son could do to carry on his memory.
He was suddenly jolted back awake with the roar from the crowd and a thud on the ground, his hazy gaze drifting back to the fight he had been "watching." A smirk crossed his lips as the poor soul who happened to be losing was slammed to the ground. Muiris could almost feel the hit in the pit of his stomach. He couldnt help but wish that he could get involved in the little skirmishes, but he knew it was best for him not to. Not only for the safety of those around him, but for himself as well. His mother had always warned him of the dangers stepping out of line in the herd. He would be shipped off to Aodh as a slave in no time. So he would instead stand idly by and observe, and at least pretend to enjoy himself.
As long as he stayed clear away from those damned flowers.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
It was finally spring again! The warm weather had arrived after a brutally cold winter much to Ezmeralda relief. She always loved this time of year. It was during this time that her family returned to their summer home in the farmlands where the sheep were let out to graze on the bountiful, green grass that had emerged from underneath the freezing layer of snow. Of course, things were a little different with it just being Ezmeralda and her sister, Roselia, returning to the home this year, but at least they would be busy. They had spent the first couple of weeks at the farm cleaning out the dust that had gathered and shaving off the woolly fur from their sheeps' winter coats. Ezmeralda was pretty crafty at coming up with ways to use the wool to sell. She stuffed the soft fur into pillows, made blankets and linings for coats, or her favorite to make: a woolly, fluffy hat to help protect horses ears from the chilly weather of winter that would be returning soon enough. Ezmeralda had worked feverishly on finishing products for the Flower Festival, stitching the last of the goods she and her sister would be selling. She always loved the Flower Festival despite the fact she rarely ever did anything other than silently spectate. Watching those around her enjoying themselves and seeing all of the beautiful flowers that had blossomed in the spring-time sun in Onea was enough for her. When the morning sun arose on the first day of the festival, Ezmeralda was giddy with excitement as she threw on the red cloak she saved for special occasions and readied the stall where they would be selling their goods. She placed them neatly in categories of what they were and even placed a few flowers here and there to give the stand a little something extra to draw in potential customers. "Ezzie, I think you might be going a little overboard this year." Roselia said in a joking voice to which Ezmeralda let out a nervous chuckle. "I-I'm just really excited. This winter was a rough one, and I'm ready for the nicer weather." She explained while she walked around to the other side of the stand to inspect her work. Roselia sat down behind the stand, ready for business. "You suuuure it's not because you'll be looking for a certain someone special? Maybe a certain midnight wonder who rescued you from the bitter cold all those years ago?" The younger mare teased, mockingly making kissy faces toward her. Oh goodness, why had she even told Roselia about that? She knew it would just bite her in the butt later. "N-no! I'm just looking forward to all of the events and... stuff. You know what, you can have the first shift here. I'll see you later, Roselia." Ezmeralda said with a small smile, flicking her long tail in goodbye to her sister as she walked among the crowds that were already beginning to form. It was crazy how many horses where in one place, and Ezmeralda found herself taking a break from looking around at all of the different merchant stands to watch one of the many fights that would be happening throughout the day. She normally didn't support things of the sort, but seeing how the fighters moved so gracefully around each others attacks or knowing what they were fighting about and rooting for the side that she hoped to win was strangely enthralling. Her ears swiveled back slightly when she heard the sickening sound of the losing opponent hit the ground, having the air in his lungs forcefully pushed out as his weight hit the dirt. Ezmeralda winced at the pain that was evident on his face and turned to look at the crowd in an attempt to take her mind off of the fight for just a moment. It was then that she saw a familiar face. He was clothed in a green cloak with lovely wolf-fur lining. She blinked in surprise, debating on whether or not it was really him until he turned his face slightly in her direction, and she was able to see the horns that protruded from his muzzle. As the winner was declared for this fight, the grulla mare made her way through the crowd, careful not to step on any hooves or tails. Ezmeralda could feel her heart beating a little faster and a blush already warmed her cheeks. Why in the world had the gods made her such a blubbering goober when it came to things like this? "Muiris!" She called out to get his attention over the noise of the crowd, a sheepish smile appearing on her face. "F-fancy meeting you here." Ezmeralda said as she finally reached his side. "How have you been? I-it's been awhile since we've gotten a chance to see each other."

The winner in the ring started calling for other challengers, making the crowd get more excited than it was before. Muiris took a step back, allowing for someone to pass him if they thought they were worthy enough to join the skirmish. He couldnt help but let a smile crawl onto his features. Maybe it was everyone's good vibes rubbing off on him but he could say he was having a good time. The next competitor stepped up, and Muiris fell back into his resting trance. Three hooves planted firmly into the ground as the fourth one sat rested at an angle. His usually long-flowing dark hair was pulled up tightly in a bun, just to keep it out of the way (and to keep any fly away strands from grabbing onto unsuspecting flowers). He was just about to skip back off to sleep when a familiar voice rang over the sound of the other warriors around him. His head shot up quickly, ear erect in both surprise and curiosity. Mateo was currently stationed in Aodh and he had seen Fox earlier.. who else would possible want to get his attention?
And then he saw her. Ezmeralda. The mare he had helped out of the terrible storm so many years ago; and even if she didnt know it, she had helped him as well. He had a half a mind to duck away and hide, as she had seen him so long ago in his most vulnerable state. He had just been abandoned by the one he thought he loved, he was weak, he was pathetic. It was embarrassing now, looking back at that time. He had grown so much since then- so much so that he didnt even stutter when he talked anymore! He called that a win. It was too late now, though, she was already making her way over.
A smile instantly lit up the warrior stallion's muzzle as she ushered her flustered greeting, all thoughts before of wanting to hide now vanished. He remembered why he had even liked her in the first place. Not only did she actually want to be friends with him (which was already a huge plus), but he found her innocent and often flustered nature adorable.. not that he would admit it. "It has been forever, Ezeralda!" He chirped almost a little too excitedly as he turned to face her in greeting. "Im.. fairing.." He replied, quirking his eyebrow as he mulled over the years that had passed. Yes, defiantly no more than fairing. "How are you? Hows your sister?" He felt like he wanted to rattle off a million questions to the mare. It truly had been too long since the two had met, and Muiris had not gone a single day without thinking about her.

She worried for a second that he wouldn't recognize her. It had been years since they had seen each other after all, and the last time they had met, he hadn't exactly been on the best of terms in life with his loved ones leaving him unexpectedly. It still pained her to remember how sad and hurt he had been back then, but as she looked at him now, it appeared that he was doing a lot better. He looked happy even (or at least content). All of the imagining she had done over the years of running into him again seemed to be replaying in her head, but it was nothing compared to the real thing. It seemed unreal to her that he was even there. Perhaps this was just one of her imaginations. "It has been a long time." She agreed with a soft chuckle, lifting her head slightly to get her hair out of her eyes. 'Too long.' The herder thought silently to herself. A smile pulled up the corners of her lips at the excitement in his voice as his eyes flashed with recognition. "Well for someone just fairing, you look like you're doing quite well." Ezmeralda muttered, wondering in embarrassment afterwards if she were being a little too weird. Her green eyes lit up when he asked how she had been doing and even remembered her sister. "I've been doing pretty well and so has my sister. Thank you for asking. We've been crazy busy getting our sheep ready for the warmer weather and making goods for the festival." Ezmeralda admitted with a little sigh at the thought of all the hours of labor the two of them had put in recently. It had been worth all the hard work though now that they were there with the Flower Festival bustling around them. Her attention returned to the present as she turned her green eyes upwards toward his brown eyes that almost looked red in the morning light. After a few moments, she noticed herself staring a little too intently and turned back toward the new fight that had begun during their greeting. "S-so what have you been up to seen we last saw each other?" Ezmeralda asked curiously, swiveling her ears toward him. After all these years, she had to wonder what all had happened since she had seen him, and she found her mind bubbling with questions to ask him. Worry also ate at the pit of her stomach as she wondered whether or not he might have found another mare to share a tent with or not after all it had been years since he had even seen her. She quickly shook off those thoughts though, blaming them on her seemingly constant insecurities. That was definitely something she had been trying to work on: growing more confident in herself and her actions (even though it seemed old habits died hard). The cheers of the crowd erupted around them as the winner from the previous fight sent another victim sprawling into the dirt only to have him jump back to his hooves and deliver a vengeful blow. "The festival is really lively this year. Are you enjoying yourself so far?"

He smiled when she mentioned that they were doing well, as if it were a relief to hear so. He couldnt help but wonder about them during every storm since, but it was nice to see that they both were still alive and kicking. "Im glad you're well and that buisness is fairing." He commented as his gaze shifted back to the fight. His ear flicked forward as a hit was blown to one's shoulder, a shiver running down his spine as he once again wished he could participate. Maybe in the future. He glanced back toward Ezzie as she continued speak, his mind drawing a blank as she asked what he had been up to all those years. His lips pursed as he wracked his brain to find something interesting that happened. At last, a soft shrug left his shoulders and a sigh from his lips. "Not much, honestly, just working the day the day." He replied, his gaze shifting down to her almost in disapointment in himself. All these years and he didnt have one interesting story. He wouldnt mention the lastest trouble he had gone through, when his team and him had gotten lost in a terrible snow storm trying to save the silly sand-dwellers who had gotten lost on their way to Onea. That was something he would rather forget himself, but couldnt due to the new scars tearing across his cheeks. He had saved the life of a Seroran and didnt even get a thank you. Typical.
He noticed he was starting to get a bitter look across his features and shook it off, licking his lips as he turned his attention back to the painted mare beside him. "What about you? Anything exciting in the herding world?" He asked, his smile returning to his lips. He was sure she had to have something, and if not.. what a boring lot they were. He almost chuckled to himself at the thought. Maybe there was a reason she had run into him today; not that he was complaining. There was a small nagging feeling in the back of his mind that she had found someone special.. He wouldnt doubt it for a second, as anyone would be lucky to call her sweet and charming nature their own. The selfish part of him sure hoped that no one had, though.
He arched his brow at her final question, tipping his head to the side as his attention turned back to the small battle before them. "Im enjoying the day off, sure." He replied with a small skip in his tone. "It is nice to see everyone in warm spirits for once." He winked at softly, and then suddenly froze. Why did he do that?? Well, maybe she didnt notice. He cleared his throat and looked away, gritting his teeth together briefly before asking her as well, "W-what about you?"

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
She winced at the loud thud as one of the fighters dealt a heavy blow to the other, and she fought the urge to cover her eyes with her long tail like a scared foal. Fighting was a typical thing to happen at the Flower Festivals (and in War-Forged in general to be honest), but something about the sound of each hit made her bones ache as if she were the one being hit. It took Muiris a minute of silence before he spoke again, and Ezzie watched as the gears of his mind turned as he went through many years worth memories. Eventually, a small shrug pulled up his shoulders and a quiet sigh left him. She didn't blame him for not having some sort of interesting story to tell though. She didn't even know if she had a story of her own to tell. It was easy to get caught up the daily grind of life and work and not something really interesting to tell. "There's nothing wrong with that. As long as you're enjoying yourself." Ezmeralda assured him as she saw a slight frown form on his face. A sheepish chuckle escaped her as the question was turned on her, and the unicorn mare fell quiet for a moment before shaking her head in defeat. "I can't say I've been up to much either. I did some work on my family's summer home last year I think it was. Added another room and painted it." That was it. That was all she could think of that was worth mentioning, and she couldn't help but giggle a little at how boring she must seem. "I guess we've both been busy with work instead of going out and adventuring some." Ezmeralda joked and chuckled. It seemed both of them needed to get out more and have some fun. She waited anxiously for him to mention that he had found someone that he loved and loved him back, but when he didn't, part of her couldn't help but be relieved that he didn't mention a significant other. She felt awful for being so selfish enough to wish someone be alone, but after all of the daydreaming of this meeting, it would probably hurt her more than she had thought if he had found someone. Ezmeralda nodded to his words, enjoying the feeling of the warm sun on her back and the gentle, spring breeze rustling her mane. She turned her eyes up from the fight just as he winked at her. It felt like the world froze, and after a moment of doubt that it had even happened, she realized that she had been holding her breath. She tried to release it as inconspicuously as possible, but it ended up coming out as a nervous giggle, and her cheeks turned hot as she blushed. "Y-yeah, it's definitely nice to have the day off to relax. I haven't gotten a chance to look around too much though since I had to help set up the stand for my sister and I's merchandise. This is the first place I've really stopped." She paused for a moment, her mind still a little frazzled with embarrassment, but at least it seemed like he was in the same boat as he looked away for a moment. "D-do you want to go with me check out some of the stuff that the merchants are selling after this fight? Maybe we can get some food or something afterwards and catch up." She asked, giving him a hopeful smile. Hopefully she didn't seem too awkward. She certainly wasn't used to asking others these kinds of things and definitely not after they had winked at her. She could already hear her sister's nosy questions in her ears. 'He winked at you?? Oh he was definitely flirting. What did you do after that? So when's the second date hmmm?' Ezmeralda had to admit that she liked the idea that he had winked at her, and his awkwardness afterwards was endearing and sweet. Where she normally would have been fearful and even more insecure after someone tried to flirt with her, something about it being him just felt... right. Word Count: 697

He nodded shortly at her mention of the work she did on the house, his ears flicking in her direction curiousily. "Alright, you win." He chuckled in a teasing tone. "You officially had it more exciting than i did these past years." Muiris almost didnt recognize himself. Something about this mare made him feel natural- he didnt feel awkward in the least bit when he opened his mouth around her, which was something that normally happened around others. He wasnt constantly winding his brain for something to say, and silences werent awkward as they usually were. This was.. strange. So very strange. Maybe he was just in the spirit of the holiday. He shrugged once more, "Oh, we sure are entertaining.." He replied with a prolonged sigh, his eyes tipping today to look at her with raised eyebrows.
He smiled when she offered to walk around some, dipping his head in a curt nod and closing his eyes ever so slightly in bliss. He had never really checked out the festival before. He normally only really hung around to watch his Raider "buddies," he used the term lightly, in their skirmishes. But now, he had a reason to stroll the rest of the festival. "Sure thing, i would love to." He beamed. He glanced back toward the fight, just in time to watch an attack fail miserably when the other dodged it. With a roll of his eyes, he leaned in a little closer to the smaller mare. "We dont even have to wait till after this fight, if you dont want to." He said a little quieter, so that no one would hear. "These two arent all that good." He smirked, sarcasam laced in his tone. He made it point to know almost each of his Raider coworkers, and he knew for a fact that the two in the ring currently had very different fighting styles.. styles that didnt mix well and made for a boring fight.
His cheeks puffed with air and he blew it out slowly, his eyes wandering above and beyond the crowd. "However, i... never participated in this celebration before..." He admited sort of sheepishly, almost embarassed that he had not played along wiith this custom of his herd. "So.. ill need some help getting around, and knowing how to enjoy this to its fullest extent." A lopsided smile formed on his features as he finally looked at her again. One may think that he never participated because he didnt want to, but the real reason was his mother. He remembered, briefly, when he was younger, accompanying it with her.. but he was far too young then to have full memories. And he had never done it again since her dissapearance... Well, that, and the flowers gave him a nasty case of the sniffles; but for whatever reason, he didnt think that was an important detail to share.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
Ezmeralda giggled at the sound of his joking tone. Wow, if anyone overheard them, they'd probably think they were the most boring bunch in War-Forged for sure, not that she minded being boring. After all, she hadn't noticed that she didn't have a life full of excitement and adventure until someone had asked her. She couldn't shake a strangeness that had crept over her thoughts though as she was reminded how weird this was for her. It was like reuniting with a very close friend that she had known for years, and she could honestly say that she didn't feel the least bit awkward like she normally did. For the first time in a long time, she just felt... normal. "Oh yes, I'm sure we'd wow plenty of others with our fascinating stories."
She grinned excitedly as he agreed to accompany her around the festival to look at the different knickknacks and other things that would be going on. Eagerness grew inside of her at the thought of all the different events that they would probably see. Spring and the Flower Festival were a time of happiness and celebration, and it was about time after a cold, long winter to have something to be happy about. Not to mention that all of the weddings that happened during the festival called to her soft, romantic side. Something about a spring wedding during a gathering meant to celebrate life and happiness was beautiful to her. Her attention was grabbed by Muiris and the fight, and she twisted her ear toward him to catch the words he muttered softly. A smile appeared on her face as she responded, "Yeah, they're not exactly as... graceful as the other fight." Now that he mentioned it, the two fighters did seem a little awkward in their movements as their fighting styles conflicted with one another. "Let's go." Ezmeralda's eyes sparked with joy and excitement as tilted her head toward a small part in the crowd that they could get through to leave before carefully making her way away from the makeshift fighting ring. Her brows rose in surprise at Muiris's admittance, and her green eyes studied how embarrassment shaped his features. "Really? Like never?" She asked curiously, wondering what he normally did during this time of year. Probably the same as she normally did: work. A cheerful grin pulled up the corners of her lips as a small chuckle escaped her. "Well, we'll have to change that. I'll try my best to make sure you have a good time." Ezmeralda promised sheepishly, hoping that she'd be able to show him everything he'd been missing out on over the years. "The best thing here at the festival has to be the food... or at least that's what I think. There are some merchants who make the most amazing drinks and treats that you'll be anxiously waiting for the next festival to try it again." She spoke as they began walking toward where the majority of the merchant stands were set up. The delicious smell of food was already drifting in their direction. "There's a merchant who makes some really great apple cider if you want to try some of that first?"

He was more than happy to plod after her, wiggling his way between his herd-mates and muttering quiet excuse me and sorry's under his breath. He glanced back down at her as surprised relished her features at his confession. He nodded slowly, a small, wistful grin taking place on his lips. "Well.. i can when i was younger with my mother, but i dont remember it. Since she.. well, i normally just watch the fights now." He replied with a brisk nod, his gaze lifting and falling forward, only giving glances to the side here and there when there was something to look at. Although he didnt remember much about times like this with his mother, at least the ones he did were pleasant. His ears perked at the mention of food. Like any other stallion probably in all of Hireath, the way to his heart was defiantly through his stomach. "Sounds wonderful." He marveled, his eyes sparkling as his head tipped to briefly watch a merchant as she bustled to set up her small, traveling shop. He could already smell the food Ezmeralda spoke of, and it smelt great.
At her mention of cider, he was already nodding. "Oh yes! Cider's my favorite." He hummed, his eyes closing briefly as his warm smile grew. He felt like a kid in a candy store, and in some way, he actually was. He was actually getting shivers down his spine from how excited he was to experience the full essence of the festival. And it wasnt just because of the memories or the fact that he was here.. but more because, for once, he was here with an actual friend. He felt his chest warm at the thought. He certainly did not get up this morning thinking that this was how the day would turn out.
As they approached the merchant's stand, Muiris started fumbling for the small, leather bag against his shoulder, covered by the thin cloak of his father's. "L-let me pay, please." He said quickly, not giving the mare even a chance to object. He pulled sparkling shards from his bag, handing it to the merchant, his nose wrinkling up in a silly, almost playful grin as he glanced back toward the painted herder. "Its the least i can do." Not to mention, as cliche as it sounded, there was something about paying for a mare's drink that made a stallion feel manly. He knew he wasnt the only one who felt that way.
As the merchant handed over their drinks, Muiris gave the first the Ezzie and then held his close to his muzzle, letting the steam rise and tickle his nose. He took in a deep breath, savoring the apple scent as it sent yet another chill through his entire body. He nearly buried his face in his cup, his eyes wide and brows arched as he glanced over the rim at the mare before him. "Where to next?" Bubbles formed against his lips as he spoke, his voice somewhat muffled by the warm cider.

Her ears perked with interest at the sight of the small smile on his face that hinted at his mind traveling back to reflect on memories of the past. As he spoke of his mother and their time spent together here at the festival, it became quite obvious to her that he cared a lot for her by the fondness in his tone and the way his eyes softened slightly. It was heart-wrenching to think of why he couldn't accompany his mother any longer to events such as this, but Ezmeralda prayed silently to Kaia that the case wasn't as drastic as her mind was making it out to be. "H-hopefully you'll have a good time then and have lots of stories to tell someone if they ask you what you've been up to." Ezmeralda said, casting a playful grin in his direction. Ezmeralda smiled brightly at the cheerfulness in his voice, something that she hadn’t heard during their first meeting. “Cider is one of my favorites too!” She admitted with a soft chuckle. She hadn’t in a million years thought that she would run into Muiris again. With all of the traveling War-Forged horses do, it just wasn’t in the odds that they would happen to run into one another again. She was certainly glad that she had though and thanked Kaia for the chance to make a close friend. She could already smell the sweet scent of the apple cider as they approached the stand where the merchant was preparing cups of the warm liquid. Just as she was about to take out her pouch of money, Muiris quickly stepped forward with the shards needed for the drinks. A coy smile appeared on her muzzle, and the unicorn mare could feel her cheeks blush as she took the drink from Muiris as he handed it to her. She had never in her life had anyone pay for anything for her and certainly not a stallion that she had a bit of a crush on. It was a nice feeling though for someone to want to buy you something. “T-thank you. I really appreciate it, Muiris.” She muttered and dipped her head slightly in gratitude. Ezmeralda took a deep breath of the warm scent of cider as she thought of what they should do next. There were so many possibilities, and all of them were just as good of an idea as the other. The sound of music could be heard from the musicians that were performing here at the festival, playing their brightest and most cheerful tunes. “Well, it’s not a Flower Festival without flowers. Y-you don’t have to wear any if you don’t want to though.” She added sheepishly as she walked toward a stand with a variety of flowers and arrangements placed neatly on the table’s surface, her long tail swaying gently behind her. The flowers were in all shapes and sizes, and she studied each and every one and thought of which she would wear this year. She knew very well how most stallions thought about the mare-ish flowers decorating their body after all her father had been one of the many that wouldn’t put a single flower in their hair even for the sake of the celebration. He smiled at her when she thanked him, his heart nearly flipping in his chest at the soft blush that covered her cheeks. While he had never really had a crush before, now he knew what it felt like. And he couldnt help but be a little worried. What if something similar to is relationship with Bihndi happened? Muiris knew he had a tenancy of getting too attached, which only led to more pain later on. This caused him to pause while the mare started to speak and wander off once more. He was snapped back to reality when she mentioned something about flowers, and he lightly skipped over to stand beside her at the table, hoping she hadnt noticed his brief pause.
"Oh sure! Sounds like fun." He replied, without really thinking of what she had said. His eyes scanned the arrangement of flowers, all sorts of colors popping here and there to catch his attention. He already felt his nose start to tickle. He sniffed as his nose twitched. Bad idea. He glanced over to her and noticed her gaze of fondness over the beautiful flowers. Well, maybe he would be okay. Just this once. He's been able to suppress his allergies before, right?
"What about this one?" He asked, a little hesitant as he set down his cider on the table and picked up a crown of flowers. They held various different types, weaved together tight enough to hold the form of a circle. He stared it for a moment before carefully putting it on his head. He smiled slightly in pride when it balanced over his ears, though his smile quickly faced to a lopsided pout as the damn thing slid over his eyes. His brow quirked as he pushed it back up softly, shaking his head lightly when the vine tried to get tangled in his forelock.
He felt a little silly, considering how most of the other stallions in their herd felt about wearing flowers. He already seemed like an idiot to most of his coworkers without tangling flowers in his hair, but this only seemed to seal the deal. But noticing the smile on Ezzie's face made it suddenly seem not that that bad. Almost made it fun. What would make it fun would be if he wasnt allergic to the damn things. But he was going to try his hardest to ignore it- hold back every sneeze and keep his nose from dripping and eyes from watering. Didnt seem too hard. He was a Raider for goodness sake, he'd fought harder battled than this.

All of the bright colors were almost overwhelming as she looked at all of the different arrangements that laid on the table. There were flowers weaved into intricate designs: necklaces, attached to bows, crowns, everything you could possibly imagine. All of them were equally beautiful, and Ezmeralda was finding it hard to decide which she would like to wear. She felt Muiris come up close beside her after he had lagged behind slightly, his own eyes glancing over the items with interest. It was a relief to see that he was at least looking at the flowers. After seeing War-Forged stallions turn their noses up at the dainty plants for years, she had been expecting him to ignore them. But Muiris was different than the typical War-Forged it seemed. Sure he was strong (after all he had to be in order to be a Raider), but he showed a lot more kindness and generosity than she had seen from many others over the years. Her green eyes glanced up from her decision-making at his question, and a small grin danced across her face. "It looks great!" She replied just as the crown fell into his eyes, causing a fit of giggles to escape her. "It might be a little big on you though." Picking up a similar one to the one he had, she swapped the two, placing the new flower crown delicately onto his head. Once she was satisfied that it was going to stay, she gave him an approving nod of her head. "That one fits nicely I think." The mare complimented him shyly, looking up slightly at his face that was now framed with a glorious crown of delicate flowers. Noticing herself staring slightly too long, she glanced away, feeling her heart flutter nervously within her. No one in her life had ever made her feel this way. It was an odd feeling but not a bad one. Ezmeralda remembered how her mother described what it felt like to start developing feelings for someone: the butterflies in your stomach every time you saw them, the desire to know more about them and spend more time with them, staring into their eyes and noticing their different expressions. It broke her heart to know her mother never truly got to experience that... but at least Ezzie could say that she was starting to grow quite the crush on Muiris. She liked his lopsided grins and the way his forelock fell over his eyes at times, and she liked the fact that he actually seemed to like being with her, even if she found herself to be pretty boring. Pushing away her distracting thoughts, Ezmeralda picked her own flower crown to wear that had bright pink and purple flowers woven together in a tight circle that she placed on her head in a way that her horns weren't in the way. She quickly paid the small amount for their two crowns, casting Muiris a friendly smile. That was the least she could do since he had paid for the drinks! "So what would you like to do next? Did you see anything that you wanted to do or look at?" She asked, wanting to let him pick what they could do next. Word Count: 541

He started chuckling himself when a fit of giggles left the mare standing beside him. Her laughter was contagious. His ears flopped to the side as she switched out the crown with one that fit a little better, and then found one for herself. Now it was his turn to stare too long: the bright pink and purple flowers complimented her small, pink horns and emerald green eyes. Not to mention her chocolate painted coat. Shaking his head, the stallion glanced away just as she payed for the flowers and turned to him with another question. He paused as he tried to think of what there was to do next..
There was so much to do in what felt like so little time. His ears flicked at the sound of the playful music floating through the air, a smile trickling across his lips. A small shrug fell of his shoulders as he glanced down at her, his eyes sparking with interest. "Want to check out the band?" He asked as his grin grew a little larger. He always loved the sound of music, but didnt get to hear it often due to living out in the middle of no where constantly. It always brought back fond memories of his time in Aodh with his mother- they always had music going on in the streets. He remembered dancing around her until she claimed he was making her dizzy. He remembered running off with other colts in the herd to watch the bands play or even trying some of the instruments himself when the players felt like humoring the young foreigner. His ears warmed at the thought.
"We could browse other merchant tables on the way if you'd like." He offered quickly, so that their walk would not be wasted. He tipped his head to the side to motion her to follow. He could hear the music coming from the middle of town, which means they had plenty of stands to peruse through along the way. He began to walk, but slowly, to allow her to take the lead of sorts. He was still overwhelmed by all the possibilities of where they could stop- and he really wanted to see where she would chose to stop. Call it a different way of passively getting to know her. That, and his nose was starting to itch. He crinkled his muzzle and sniffed softly, trying to keep it at bay. The corner of his eyes started to water, but hopefully not noticeable quite yet. He hid his nose wiggled behind a large smile, shooting a glare at the flowers on his head whenever the mare want looking. Almost as if he was trying to tell them to behave.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
She was having a blast. It felt like it had been so long since she had actually enjoyed herself and laughed this much. This felt like the first time in years possibly that she was truly relaxed and having fun. Ever since her parents had died and she had become responsible for raising her sister, she didn't have the time or energy to do things that she enjoyed doing. She was way too busy with the responsibilities that she had suddenly been given to even think about doing anything for herself. Of course she didn't mind. It wasn't her sister's fault that their parents weren't with them any longer, and Ezmeralda tried to look on the brighter side of things. Roselia was older now, and Ezmeralda was able to venture out a little more, much like today, to have a little bit of fun. Hopefully, she could do things like this more in the future. Maybe make friends with some of her herdmates, or just find a beautiful place to calm her mind. It helped her social-anxiety and timidness to have someone with her. Normally during the festivals, she was a ball of nervousness, waiting anxiously for her to slip up with her words or accidentally step on someone's tail, but Ezmeralda was distracted from those worries by the stallion beside her. She glanced upwards at his handsome features, making sure to not be blatantly obvious that she was staring (though she was probably doing so very poorly. Being secretive wasn't exactly her forte). The brightly colored flowers really brought out the brightness of his brown eyes and contrasted with his dark coat very nicely. 'Oh gods, I really need to stop before he notices me staring at him like a total goober.' She thought to herself, catching him looking her way out of the corner of her eyes. It seemed that it wasn't just her that was having a hard time not letting their eyes linger a little too long... but maybe she was just imagining it. The two of them were hanging out, so of course, he would be looking at her! At the sound of his deep tone, she was brought back to reality, and the unicorn nodded her head. "Yeah! It feels like it's been forever since I've heard music." She admitted, hearing the soft sound of the music already gracing her ears. Ezmeralda followed after him towards the middle of town where the bands were playing. The crowds swarmed around them, bustling here and there to look at the different stands and spend time with friends that they hadn't since seen the previous spring. "That sounds great. There's plenty to look at between here and where the bands are playing." She agreed, taking another sip of her cider as her eyes wandered the merchant tables on either side of them. Everything she could imagine was there at the festival, from jewelry to coats and other clothes to paintings. She paused every now and then at different stands: a couple with brilliant paintings whose details and color amazed her and another who was selling hand-sewn quilts and other clothing garments. She appreciated and loved handmade things and saw the talent that each of the merchants had for their craft. Being a merchant herself, she knew the hard work and time that was put into each piece, and she found herself gravitating toward the merchant stands that showed promise for the merchants there to be truly loving of and talented at their craft. They slowly made their way to the middle of town, and as they walked, Ezmeralda kept her long tail close to her body, not wanting anyone to trip over it and hurt themselves. The band currently playing was standing on a stage that had probably been built specifically for the festival and was just big enough to hold the horses upon it along with their instruments. They were playing a variety of different instruments that flowed together into a wistful, upbeat tune. A smile spread over Ezmeralda's muzzle as she closed her eyes for a moment to listen, ignoring everything that was going on around her to focus on the beauty of the music. "It's really beautiful." She muttered just loud enough for Muiris to hear her over the horses around them and the music. Word Count: 720

He gladly followed behind her, his studded shoes echoing off the cobblestone ground with every quick step they took. He admired her pull toward the crafty merchants, noticing how she was more drawn toward the more hand-made items rather than the mass-produced. He was sure this came from her herder culture, as she would understand the hard work put into every hand spun item on the tables. He appreciated it as well, seeing as he would often hang out with his mother and even help her here and there when she made her own crafts and accessories to sell. He had noticed her gaze often lingered on him, but maybe he only noticed it because he was doing the same. Its official, he thought with a roll of his eyes, hoping she wouldnt notice and think it was against her. We're both dorks.
He continued to take sips of his cider, a permanent smile plastered on his dark lips. He stayed quiet, watching from afar as she jumped from table to table. He even found himself lingering on the jewelry and gems. Not that he enjoyed wearing such flashy items as this - just the cat eye gems in his shoes would do for him - but because he had always had a fascination for gems. Their eye-catching colors were stunning, all the different shapes and sizes were fun to look at, and they way others utilized them formed a whole new idea on creativity. Also, they reminded him of his mother. The stallion winced at the thought, noticing how much she had popped into his mind that day. She had disappeared six years ago, why was it suddenly a large issue for him now to push that out of his mind? He would try to keep those thoughts at bay for the rest of the day, and worry about them later. He had better things to keep his mind occupied- such as Ezmeralda and keeping his allergies from exploding. Speaking of which, his nose had started to run. The stallion sniffed, dipping his head down quickly to rub his muzzle on his knee. This only made the itch worse, causing his eyes to water even more. He didnt think he'd make it through the whole day, but now he felt bad because she had payed for the flowers.. dammit.
Once they finally made it to the center of the town, Muiris found himself slightly overwhelmed by the massive amount of equines trying to pack themselves in to listen to the music. Murmuring voices, laughter, and some singing could be heard around them. He felt as though he had to weave in between others, trying not to bump into them and draw attention to himself. But the beautiful sounds of the music floating over the crowd kept him at ease, and he glanced down at the mare when she commented on its soft tone. He nodded slowly, closing his eyes as well against the hot sun. It was almost as if the music, and being here with a friend, could take away all his troubles. Well, most of his troubles. The stallion was suddenly caught off guard with a massive sneeze, one he couldnt stop as it was a surprise even to himself. His muzzle twitched uncontrollably as he once again rubbed his nose on his knee. His eyes watered even more, his vision blurring here and there and causing him to blink quickly to clear it. He felt another one coming, but he managed to hold it back, despite how much his nose itched and ran. He kept a lopsided grin on his features, though, refusing to be defeated by a small flower crown.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
Ezmeralda listened to the beat of the instruments, following along with the musicians' rhythm in her head as she tried to listen for each individual instrument in the song. It had been so, so long since she had heard a nice, upbeat tune. After spending months in the mountains around nothing but her sister and their flock, it was nice to hear the sound of a beautiful melody. The music was relaxing, and it warmed her heart to see musicians so passionate about their music (not to mention brave enough to share it with everyone there at the festival). It made her a little anxious just thinking about performing in front of this many of her fellow herd members, so it amazed her that someone could be that courageous. All of the horses that she suddenly found herself around was overwhelming to her, and she found her green eyes darting between moving horses and the band, and her ears flicked back and forth as she caught other sounds going on around them. There were so many horses moving and talking and laughing in the plaza. Ezmeralda had no idea that there were even this many horses in War-Forged! Of course there were plenty of horses in War-Forged otherwise they wouldn’t be such a force to be reckoned with, but seeing most of the herd in one place was quite astonishing and eye-opening to witness. It wasn't easy for her to be around so much noise and so many horses though. She could handle being surrounded by sheep and listen to her sister talk her ears off. After all she worked with them every single day, but her nomadic lifestyle made it hard on her to get used to seeing, hearing, and smelling so many different things all at once. All of a sudden her head snapped in Muiris's direction as the stallion let out a huge sneeze that even seemed to startle some of the passersby. "Bless you." Ezmeralda muttered, looking down at him as he wiped his nose on his knee. She frowned in concern at the sight she saw when he picked his head back up to look at her. His eyes were watery, and his nose was runny, and despite the grin that he kept on his face, she could tell that something was up. "Muiris, are you alright? Is something over here bothering you?" She asked like a concerned mother which she instantly wanted to smack herself for. But his reddening, watery eyes were definitely a cause for concern. "We could go somewhere else if something over here is making you sick." Ezmeralda offered with a crooked smile, tilting her head curiously. Maybe it was all of the different smells mixed together that was bothering him like this, and if it were a simple fix, she didn’t want him to feel compelled to stay just because of her. The stallion's ear flicked back in her direction as she asked if he was alright. As much as he wanted to say yes, his head told him otherwise. His watering eyes were now making it difficult for him to see, the equine around him now blurry and wavy though his vision. He finally managed to shake his head, the tight bun of hair atop his neck bouncing along with him. "Im allergic to flowers." He finally said, a crooked smile on his lips as he carefully took the crown off his head and shook his head once more. "Well, pollen, but i tend to just stay away from all flowers in general." He chuckled at himself for his own stupidity, holding back yet another sneeze. Now that she mentioned it, being stuck in the middle of the crowd, who all adorned their own flowery accessories, probably wasnt helping him much either. He didnt want to leave, as the music was soothing to listen to and he was actually having a good time despite the crowd. But if he didnt, he would probably end up unable to breathe. And that was bad.
With a sigh, he glanced around for an escape between the pile of equines around them. He glanced back to Ezmeralda and nodded his head to the right of him, showing an opening. "Maybe we can go somewhere not so.." There he was again, cut off by another sneeze. Oh, how he hated allergies so much. "..crowded." He ended with a sniff, smiling and plopping his flower crown on the head of a young filly who happened to be passing by. It was a little large for her, the crown falling lopsided over one of her ears, but her bright smile indicated that she was more than pleased for the unexpected gift. She gave Muiris a small nod before hopping away to hide behind her mother.
Muiris chuckled under his breath, rolling his eyes in a playful manner before turning to lead his friend through the crowd. He weaved in and around the other war-forged, ducking his head away from many encounters with other horses and their flowery decorations. He managed to keep back the next few sneezes that threatened to follow, as removing his own crown had already helped just a small bit. With a glance back toward the painted mare behind him, embarrassment played across his features. "Sorry about that.. I meant to tell you, but you seemed so excited." He confessed sheepishly. Now you seem like a softy, Mui, good job.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
Her ears swiveled toward him, trying her best to hone in on the sound of his voice above the noise of the music and the crowd around them. His eyes were watery to the point where she doubted he could even really see what was going on around him, and his nose was wet from the mucus that his body was created to get rid of whatever had intruded his senses. 'I'm allergic to flowers.' Her eyes widened in surprise at his statement. He was allergic to flowers? Well, it definitely explained the sudden onset of symptoms that he had. Ezmeralda couldn't help but feel incredibly guilty that she had bought him that darn flower crown without making sure that he truly wanted it first. "Oh no! I-I'm s-so sorry!" She apologized frantically as he took off the crown and placed it on the head of a small filly that happened to be passing by. A small grin appeared on her face to see the pleasantly surprised look on the filly's face as the crown slipped a little too much over one of her ears. It was a moment bright enough to distract her from her guilt and worry, but as soon as the filly was out of sight again, it felt like a tidal wave crashed over her. A few birds had begun to flutter high above her head as her blessing swelled with her emotions, and Ezmeralda quickly bit her tongue, trying to quell her growing anxiety and guilt. The last thing she needed right now was birds flying all over her or pooping on the innocent equines around them. The unicorn mare nodded her head silently in agreement to his plan, walking behind him through the crowd. Guilt weighed down her stomach with each sound of discomfort that he made until they were finally outside of the crowded plaza and into a much quieter part of town where tables stood in front of small cafes. The music playing from the band could still be heard though from where they now stood. A nervous look played across her face as he turned back to look at her. She expected to see anger or frustration on his face, something that she would completely understand. She had been dumb and inconsiderate, and she should have asked first before buying it and putting it on his head. What she saw on his face wasn't what she had expected though: embarrassment, and the words that came out of his mouth caused a breath of relief to escape her. "Don't be sorry. I should be the one apologizing." She muttered apologetically, giving him a sheepish grin. "You could have told me that you were allergic to them. It wouldn't have hurt my feelings if you had said no. I would feel even worse than I do now if your nose and throat got so clogged up that you couldn't breathe because of something I gave you." Ezmeralda admitted, feeling her stomach twist nervously at the thought that she could have possibly killed him. She could already hear the news traveling all around Hireath: 'Herder mare kills Raider with flowers at the Flower Festival'. Her cheeks burnt a crimson red in humiliation, and remorse filled her eyes that glanced upwards at him. "A-are you feeling a little better? Your eyes don't look as watery."

The stallion froze when glanced up at him, guilt and embarrassment evident on her features. His own guilt filled the pit of his stomach, weighing down his heart. He'd seen the birds that had started to gather, their movements catching the corner of his eye. It was then that he remembered what she had mentioned of her blessing so long ago, and that just made his guilt even worse. Great, now you're freaking her out. He scolded himself. He shook his head quickly, taking a step forward to do.. what? There was nothing he could do. "No no no, dont think its your fault, its all mine." He nearly stumbled over his own words as he tried to make her feel better.. somehow. "Im the one who agreed to wear it." However, he wouldnt admit as to why he had agreed. He had agreed because he was distracted, sure, but more so because he would let his allergies kill him several times over just to see her happy. But of course, he wouldnt admit to that, even if he wanted to.
He fell silent as he tried to look anywhere but at her, the embarrassment obvious on his face. He noticed the quiet shops and the empty tables begging for attention. The streets were empty near the smaller shops, most of the merchants deciding to take the day off to enjoy the festivities. It was eerily quiet, apart from the soothing tone of the music floating on the cool breeze. His ears pricked at her question, his soft gaze finally picking back up to look at her. "Yeah, a little better. Dont worry, i'll be fine. I deal with this every year and havent died yet." He replied with a soft, lopsided smile. His head no longer hurt, but it still felt bogged down from congestion. His nose was something that would be stuffy for the rest of the day, unfortunately. Cold air coupled with allergies never mixed well for the stallion; but at least he would stop sneezing and the snot would stop running. Because that was real attractive.
He bit his lip as silence fell over them again like a blanket, Muiris scraping his studded shoes across the cobblestone under his hooves nervously. He was really hoping he didnt ruin their day, but he sure was feeling like he had. But he could save it. He liked to pretend that he was good at that. Without thinking, he bumped his muzzle against her cheek, feeling the warmth from her blush rush across his nose. "Want to go check out some of the games they have set up? Or watch the races?" He suggested with a curious tip of his head. His forelock fell over his left eye, causing him to blow it out of the way. "Or if theres something else you have in mind.." He added, glancing back over her shoulder while knitting his brow together. He wasnt sure what else there was to do, seeing as he rarely remembered all the activities, but he just wanted to get her mind - and his too - off the overwhelming guilt hanging over their shoulders.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
She took a few deep breaths, shaking off the panicky, nervous feeling that had risen inside of her now that it was evident that he was going to be alright. 'Stop freaking out you dork! He's fine. He said he would be okay.' Ezmeralda told herself and felt herself calm to a point that the birds that had started to circle began flying off in different directions as her blessing loosened its grip on them. A sigh of relief escaped her at the sight of them darting off. While she liked her blessing, it wasn't always welcomed (especially when she still didn't have a lot of control over it yet). When her eyes returned to ground level, she realized how close he had gotten, and she felt herself blush slightly. When had he gotten so close to her? Had he noticed the birds circling overhead and was trying to calm her down? "I'm just glad you're okay." She muttered in relief, feeling slightly less guilty at his attempt to comfort her. 'Oh goodness, why must I seem so weak and panicky all the time?' He probably thought she was a nutcase for feeling so badly over giving him the sniffles. Maybe part of it was the fact that she liked him, and she wanted desperately to impress him somehow. To show him how far she’d come since he had given her shelter from that snow storm, but maybe she just needed to relax and be herself... hopefully that wouldn't scare him away. She hadn’t even thought that he probably went through this every year when the Flower Festival came around. All that she had been able to think about was the fact that she had been the one that had put a flower crown full of pollen on his head. “That’s good that you’re feeling even just a little bit better though. I didn’t even think about how you deal with all of this every year. I was just… worried.” Ezmeralda admitted sheepishly, fighting to urge to cover her face like a timid filly with her long tail. “J-just don’t let me kill you, okay? You won’t hurt my feelings if you say no to anything especially if doing it might end up hurting you more than helping.” She added with playfulness in her tone, trying to show that she was still having a good time despite their little mishap. Ezmeralda took the moment of silence to allow herself to relax, focusing on the sound of the music. She hadn’t even noticed that Muiris remained by her side until she felt his nose bump against her cheek and felt herself flush hotly at the feeling of his soft nose on her fur. “Y-yeah, I’d like that a lot.” She agreed and nodded her head, her long hair bobbing slightly. “Let’s go watch one of the races, and maybe some of the games will catch our eyes on our way over there.” The mare suggested, wondering what kinds of activities they would have set up this year. She normally didn’t participate in any of the games and watched instead in fear that she would end up making a fool out of herself, but maybe this year she’d work up the courage to try out a game or two. She tilted her head in the direction she intended to go, allowing Muiris to catch up to walk beside her if he pleased. Her mind worked to produce some sort of conversation for their walk to where the races and games were being held, but for the introvert that she was, it was pretty difficult for her to think of something interesting to say at least until something finally clicked. "Have you been anywhere interesting over the years? I don't get to travel too far off the path that I travel with my flock on Mount Skeldr, but I'm sure as a Raider that you get to patrol a lot more land than I do." A smile spread across her face, her eyes filling with curiosity at where he might have had the chance to since they had last met. Word Count: 698

He smiled lightly at her response, sniffling away a sneeze. "Im sorry, i wont let it happen again." He apologized with a light tone. "No matter how much fun it is." He chuckled softly, hoping a few steps to catch up to her and walked along side her. He really hoped they would be able to find a game or two to play, as he hadnt participated since he was a foal. He remembered it being incredibly fun, and hoped it would live up to his memories. His ear flicked to the side when she asked him a question, his lips pressing together in deep thought. "Not really." He replied with a shrug. He normally kept the the War Lord's Road for patrols are within the mountains when it came to raids, but.. His mind flashed once more to thoughts about his mother: how long she had been missing, where she had said she was going next. Her promise to come back within a weeks time.
"Im thinking of making a trip to Valore soon, though.." He added a little more less confident than he had planned. It would be anything but a vacation, and he knew that, but it would at least bring him.. peace? He snorted. What a ridiculous idea. He forced a small smile to play across his lips. "I'll tell you about it.. if i decide to go." He assured her, figuring the mare probably loves stories when she lived how she did. He always found it intriguing how others could go out and risk their lives to tend to a flock of animals who had minds of their own. Muiris sure knew he wasnt able to do it.
As they got closer to the races, the sounds of shouts and laughs from the other War-Forged could be heard drifting through the afternoon air. The stallion's glanced behind them, the sun now brisk on their backs as it started its way down from its afternoon peek. His ears flicked as cheers erupted from the gathering around the races- his best guess being that someone just won. He glanced back down toward the mare, his brow quirking. "Anything seem interesting?" He finally asked, allowing his eyes to wander around the grounds for any open games. His attention was once again snatched by the racers leaving the make shift track. It wrapped around the outside of the festival, looping over the rough terrain of the surrounding hills before circling back around the meet at the game grounds. While Muiris wasnt much of a runner, that defiantly seemed like something fun for them to do. "Bet i can beat you." He said quickly before he was able to wimp out of the odd challenge, his smirk growing as he raised his brow in question. It seemed like a fair bet- both of their jobs required tackling loose and uneven terrain, as well as long treks. The more he thought about it, the more confident he was getting about his proposal.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
Her ears turned toward him as he trotted a few steps to walk beside her as they made their way to where the games were being held. At his soft chuckle, Ezmeralda glanced at him out of the corner of her eyes with a playful glint to her green eyes. A small grin crept across her face, and she chuckled quietly, feeling more and more relieved that he was okay now that he wasn't covered in things that he was allergic to and that he was joking around about it.
As they walked through the crowds, Ezmeralda kept an ear toward Muiris to listen intently to him. A few of her uncles had been Raiders, and it always seemed that they had some sort of tale to tell whenever she saw them, though now that she thought of it, they could have been very well just stories to tell to impress their young nieces and nephews. Maybe they were all given different places to patrol, and it didn't change much. She certainly knew how that felt after taking her sheep on the same trail for years now.
Her brows rose with curiosity at his uncertain tone. "Valore?" She said, intrigued at the idea of traveling all the way to the land of Aodh. She had heard stories of the place, both good and bad, but it seemed like an interesting place to visit. It would be so different there than in Onea with so many different horses and culture, and she could only imagine the items that would be for sale in their grand markets. "I'd love to hear about it if you decide to go." Ezmeralda muttered eagerly. Stories were always a favorite of hers for some reason. She guessed it was because of all the monotonous tasks that she had to do that made her like to hear something different or maybe it was all the stories she told her sister so she would fall asleep after their parents passed away. Either way, she always enjoyed a story no matter what it was about.
Ezmeralda could hear the sounds of laughter and cheers as they got nearer to the race track... or what they were using as a race track at least. The rocky terrain outside of the festival was marked off with colored flags to indicate the trail that the racers were to follow, and from the looks of it, the track looped around the outskirts of the festival and into the hills before returning to the finish line nearby. She couldn't help but smile at seeing all the fun everyone was having. Something about seeing others happy always seemed to bring a smile to her face. She walked closer to the track, squinting into the distance to see what appeared to be the racers making their way toward the finish line. The crowd around them was growing in excitement as the racers ran at their top speed to win. Ezmeralda could already feel her heart pumping with delight and exhilaration as they waited in anticipation to see who would win this race.
The unicorn mare turned back toward her companion with a surprised expression. She hadn't expected to be challenged to a race, and she wasn't exactly built for running. Her body was more designed for heavy lifting and traveling at a more slow pace. How was she to beat a Raider stallion in something that he was probably used to doing? 'Confidence, Ezmeralda. You're much too old for this, and it's nothing to put pressure on yourself about. It's just a friendly race, and it's okay if you fall behind.' She told herself, wanting to push back the nervousness that had held her back in the past from opportunities such as this. "W-well, we'll just have to see about that." Ezmeralda said a little less confidently than she had wanted, but she didn't hesitate to sign them up for the next race when she found the sign-up booth. No backing down now! They were actually going to do this! Ezmeralda was quite surprised and happy with herself though as she returned to stand beside Muiris. Maybe this was her first step in growing a little more confident in herself. Plus, she was used to running around on uneven terrain. As a herder, she was constantly chasing after sheep that had decided to take a route of their own. A race couldn't be much different than that, right? "Are you ready for this?" Ezmeralda asked, a sheepish smile pulling up the corners of her lips as her long tail flicked behind her.

His muzzle wrinkled in a toothy grin as she hesitantly accepted and left to sign them up. For once, he didnt follow, his studded hooves left solid in the dirt beneath them. His eyes scanned the make-shift race track, his ears flicking to catch the sounds of the other equine around him. For one, he couldnt believe that he was here. Not just at the festival in general, but physically here. At the race track. About to run around like a fool with the mare he liked. Excellent.
His ears flicked as she suddenly appeared beside him again, pulling him quickly out of his thoughts and even startling him ever so slightly when she spoke up. He glanced down at her with widened eyes, though they quickly narrowed in a playful, competitive manner. "Oh sure." He replied with a quick nod before offering a glance back to the track. His nerves were starting to get to him, as he could feel his stomach flip when they called for the next entrants. "The real question is, though, are you ready?" He asked slyly, wrinkling his nose at her with a playful grin before making his way toward the starting line. His ears stood forward as two others jointed them- a stocky mustang-like stallion and a more sleek build mare. He twisted his head back to look before them, his hooves scuffing the soft dirt below them. His lips pulled in a tight line, his eyes widening as he realized they were both up against much more slender horses. The stallion even dared to give him a smirk. Wow, they were both screwed.
The buzzer sounded and the starting flag was waved wildly by the race manager, signaling for the race to start. The two other entrants bolted off immediately, leaving Muiris in the dust for a few brief seconds as he offered a challenging grin to the painted mare beside him before taking to his hooves. Granted, the stallion never really ran for fun. As if he had the energy to haul his massive stature around already, running wasnt one of the things he did on a regular basis. But on a terrain such as this, and opponents such as he had, the stallion suddenly reverted back to his training. The rough terrain was a breeze, though maneuvering it quickly wasnt quite as easy. His hooves were fairly well planted, thanks to the help of his sharp shoes. However, it didnt take long for his breath to get heavy. For the sake of his own dignity, he would blame it on his allergy scare from earlier.
His lungs seemed to welcome the fresh air, however, and the stallion was able to find some sort of joy in the race. His muscles felt free as the stretched under his thick skin. He loved the sound of his own hoof beats colliding with the other racers'. The cool air played with his long hair and brushed against the part of his neck that rarely got to meet the light of day. It actually felt good to run for a purpose other than running for his life or chasing down a battle victim. He hopped from the side of a dirt mound before splashing through the small creek that winded its way through the track. Water splashed up on his belly, dripping down his legs. He shivered from the cool contact as it combated against the mid-day heat.
He turned his head to look for Ezmeralda, hoping she didnt fall too far behind.. or even get ahead of him during his bliss day dreaming.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
She could feel her stomach knotting and un-knotting anxiously as she returned to stand beside Muiris and wait for the call for the next racers to approach the starting line. What in the world was she thinking? She wasn't a runner. Her heavier stature was definitely not meant to go very fast. She was going to look like a fool in front of all of these horses trying to drag herself along this track. Her tail flicked behind her nervously. Oh goodness, she hadn't even thought of her thick, long tail that would surely slow her down.
Ezmeralda glanced over to see the playful grin that graced Muiris's face as they called for the next contestants. She liked the way his smiles seemed to light up his entire face and make his brown eyes seem warm and welcoming. She tried her hardest to focus on that bit of positiveness while they lined up next to the other racers. This was just for fun. She had to keep reminding herself that. This was just a game, a way for them to have a little bit of fun. She could only hope that she wouldn't look like too big of a fool in front of the stallion that she liked. "I-I'm ready." Ezmeralda stuttered, making her bite her tongue. So much for sounding tough in front of the competition. Not that they probably thought the two large horses beside them were much competition anyways. The two of them were much lighter built and looked as though running was in their blood. Surprisingly though, it kind of eased her mind to think that she didn't have to worry about keeping up with them. All she had to do was keep up with Muiris.
The buzzer blared loudly, and in a split second, the other two racers took off down the track. The unicorn mare blinked in surprise for a moment before her green eyes glanced over at the stallion beside her to see his challenging smirk as he took off running after them. Ezmeralda took a deep breath and ran. The wind pulled at her long mane and feathered hooves. Everyone was ahead of her, running along the rough terrain as quickly but safely as they could. Ezmeralda focused on her breathing, not wanting to have to quit the race all together because of something as silly as that. This was much different than chasing sheep through the mountains, but hopefully, the endurance she had built up over the years of herding came in handy for this.
The painted mare galloped along the track, pushing herself a little bit harder as her muscles warmed up to catch up to Muiris. She watched how his muscles coiled and relaxed with each stride he took, and she found herself mesmerized for a second with how powerful and handsome the Raider looked running along the mountain trail. A blush warmed her cheeks when she realized what she was doing, but instead of faltering, she pushed herself forward, pushing her daydreaming to the back of her mind. Her ears were filled with the sound of their hooves on the rocky ground beneath them. The feeling of just running was oddly more relaxing than she had thought it would be. Now that her muscles were warmed up, she could truly enjoy the feeling of running across the rocky landscape as quickly as she could like she had done when she was much younger, before her parent's death that had turned her life upside-down. She was actually having fun which was something that didn't happen very often. Most of her time was spent worrying about this, that, and the other thing, but bumping into Muiris at the festival seemed to have eased away her normally nervous nature even if it were just by a tiny bit, allowing her to actually enjoy herself.
As she raced across a small creek, she could see the turn up ahead that marked the halfway point of the track where they would begin turning back toward the finish line. It was marked by a large bend with boulders and rocks creating a wall on one side of the track. Halfway there... her mind buzzed with all of the sudden adrenaline that pumped through her veins, allowing her to push herself to the point where she was running side by side with Muiris. Her head turned ever so slightly to cast him a competitive smirk just as they reached the bend. Ezmeralda took the corner as tightly as she could, imagining herself chasing after one of her nimble sheep that often took sharp corners such as this to outrun her if they didn't want to be caught. She used her tail as a rudder and balanced her weight through the turn until she was finally out of the bend. Despite her panting, a smile pulled up the corners of her lips. Even though the other two racers were still ahead of her, Ezmeralda couldn't help but feel exhilarated. She had made it this far despite all the doubt she had had in herself, and even if she lost the race, she felt as thought she had made great strides that day in building up her self-confidence.
But it wasn't time to congratulate herself just yet, she needed to push herself through this last stretch toward the finish line.

The other two racers were going to beat them. That was obvious to Muiris. Not only were they more built for running themselves, but they were taking it way more seriously than the large roan draft. He even winced when one of them tried to distract the other with a mock snap of her teeth. They were simply more competitive than he was. His ears flicked to the side as his friend came up beside him, his gaze dropping by as he watched every one of her muscles slide under her painted coat like a snake- tensing and relaxing with each step the two of them took. He loved the sound of their hooves pounding into the ground, almost in rhythm as they took the bend around the half way mark. Muiris' tail whipped wildly behind him, brushing the large rocky barricade as he passed. He could see the finish line up ahead, and sighed in relief. While the first nice little sprint had felt good, his legs were already starting to feel heavy and his lungs were starting to protest. Just a little further..
He caught her competitive smirk, and offered one back in return, his ears flicking to the side. Her tight corner around the neck bend caught him by surprise, his own large hooves unable to take such a nimble turn. This allowed her to pull ahead of him, but only by a little bit; and he would be lying if he said he tried to keep up with her pace. He simply wanted to see the joy in her eyes if she had beat him, that was all.. His hooves were only a step behind Ezmeralda's, the two drafts still side-by-side while they bounded across the finish. The other two racers were already done, cooling off with a bunch of friends as if the race had never happened. Muiris, however, felt like he wanted to die. Sweat had already started to gather on his neck, turning his normally light roaning into dark patches against his skin. A smile still stayed plastered on his face, though, as he slowed down, prancing across the cold ground on complaining hooves.
"What fun~!" He chirped, coming to a stop and wheeling around to glance back at his companion. He felt his muscles fall basically to jello when he stopped, causing him to shake out his legs softly. He was not used to constant running, that was for sure. He took in a deep breath as a breeze tousled his thick hair, pulling it away from his heating neck and causing a shiver to run through his body. Having a higher body temperature than normal was already annoying enough for him- the race only made it worse. His brow suddenly furrowed in a playful manner as he glanced back to the mare. "I guess i'll have to start chasing sheep like you if i ever want to keep up with ya." He teased, pressing his tongue against the back of his teeth as he gave her a silly grin.

Ezmeralda | War-Forged | Herder
The finish line was quickly approaching, and Ezmeralda lost herself in how much fun she was having. Sure she was sweaty and panting, but it was all worth it. The feeling of the wind pulling at her long hair and feathered legs, hearing their hooves beat on the ground as they galloped, feeling so free, it was all so freeing and surprisingly relaxing to her that she felt like even her insecurities couldn't hold her back.
Ezmeralda almost didn't notice that after the turn she had pulled ahead of Muiris. It was just by a fraction of a stride, but she could feel herself push a little harder to keep her lead. 'You can do it. You can do it.' She reminded herself over and over again until she could hear the sounds of the crowds at the festival growing louder and louder as they finally reached the end of the race. Just a little bit further.
Her heart jumped in her chest as she crossed the finish line by just enough to beat him. Her eyes widened in surprise. She had won! Well, not really won. After all, the other two horses had been chitchatting with their friends by the time they had finally caught up, but she had beat Muiris! The painted mare turned back toward him, a big smile plastered on her face as she caught her breath. "Oh my gosh, that was a lot of fun!" Ezmeralda panted, her green eyes sparked with happiness. She giggled at his teasing tone and felt herself blush. "W-well, you can come chase my sheep whenever you'd like." She tried joking back. Oh gods, why was she so awkward?! Was that really the best she could come up with? 'You can come chase my sheep whenever you'd like'? She really needed to ask Roselia about stuff like that when she got the chance.
Ezmeralda turned to see the sun was beginning to set in the sky, and the mountains around them were illuminated by the setting sun, casting brilliant oranges and pinks across them and the sky. "It's getting late." She muttered a little sadly, turning to give Muiris a lopsided grin. Her ears twitched slightly at the distant sound of music, and her eye lit up when an idea popped into her head. "Do you want to go listen to the music and maybe get a drink to cool down?" She asked, tilting her head curiously. She could see that his coat had darkened quite a bit after all of that running, and it wasn't just because of the darkening world around them. "Y-you don't have to if you don't have the time or you want to get some sleep. I'm just- I'm having a really great time, and I hope you are too." Ezmeralda offered him a coy smile, turning her head to see lanterns being lit around the town as darkness began to set in. The fire from the lanterns created a warm, welcoming feeling, and it seemed the crowds themselves had settled down quite a bit since the bustling beginning of the day. By now, all of the merchants had closed down their stalls to join in with the festivities that were still going on, and everyone was probably hanging around the middle of town where the bands were still playing their wistful, upbeat tunes.

He chuckled at her reply, his nose crinkling with a smile. While she may have thought that her response was awkward, he saw it as cute in a strange way. "I might just have to take you up on that offer." he replied with a wink and a shake of his thick mane. Again with the winking.. he scolded himsef.
His own gaze followed hers as they both turned to the sky. Bight illuminating colors stretched across the spring sky, spreading oranges and reds and yellows across the snow-specked grounds of Onea. Muiris' coat lit up in red hues, and a glance to Exmeralda showed that hers did the same. His ears shifted to the side when she mentioned it was getting late. He sighed himself, wishing he could convince the sun to pop right back up in the sky. By the sound of her voice, he knew she wished the same. His ears twitched at the sound of music as well, and he turned to the side when she proposed them to get a drink and listen to the music while the day died down. A soft smile spread across his lips as she stuttered he next comment, his eyes lightening despite the darkening world around them. "I think thats a wonderful idea." He replied with a nod, already starting in the direction of the center of town once more.. though, this time they woud try to stay on the outside of the crowd. He sure did learn his lesson. His lips pressed together as a very light blush found its way onto his cheeks. It warmed his heart to hear that she was having fun.. He stopped and turned back toward her, deep brown eyes now painted red from the sky locking with hers. "This is the most fun ive ever had at the festival, Ezmeralda, thank you. Im so glad we ran into each other." He replied with a lopsided grin. He resisted the urge to hug her, as that would be weird, right?
A shiver ran through his coat as he turned back in the direction they were walking, He managed to catch one merchant before they closed down, once again purchasing both his and the mare's drinks. He sipped his carefully, the feel of the iced tea running smoothy down his throat and cooling him off almost instanty. He stood in silence as he watched the other equine of Onea listen and sway to the music, some even singing in terrible pitches before bursting out laughing due to the looks on their friends' faces. Foals played tag through the crowds, chased by their familiars and sometimes even their parents. It was organized chaos, as Muiris liked to see it.
Once he finished his tea, he set the empty cup down on the table beside them and twisted his muzzle with uncertainty. If he was really going to go through with what he had in the back of his mind this whole time.. if he was really going to go find his mother.. he wouldnt know when he would be back- if he even came back at all. His brow furrowed as he mustered up as much courage as he could manage. Now or never "Do y-you possibly want to dance?" He asked as the upbeat music changed to a more dance-worthy song, its beat lively and strong, accompanied by the rhythmic hooves of the other equine who had the same idea as him. His nerves didnt allow him to wait for a response, as well as his current just do it attitude as he dragged the grullo mare out into the cobblestone square anyways, spinning around her before coming once again in front of her and allowing his hooves to follow the beat of the music; all with a playful smirk on his lips and a glint in his eye.

Ezmeralda | War Forged | Herder
Ezmeralda breathed a small sigh of relief, a smile spreading across her face. Thank Kaia he hadn't thought her awkward attempts at... could she even call what she had said flirting?... were strange enough to scare him away. A small blush warmed her cheeks at his reply and the wink that accompanied it. She was certainly grateful that Muiris was at least amused by her obvious awkwardness and that he was friendly enough that she didn't feel the constant need to apologize for it. There had been countless times in her past when she had been ridiculed for her timidness. She had been told time and time again how 'un-War-Forged like' she was and how much weaker she was than any other mare in the herd. That was part of the reason why Ezmeralda was the way she was. The constant mocking and scorning had given her such a low self-esteem that she hadn't been sure she could do anything right until recently, but this was honestly probably the most comfortable she had ever felt in the company of someone else (other than family of course). She didn't find herself overthinking or being hesitant about talking like she normally was. Ezmeralda felt like she could let a bit of her true colors shine. Plus, when the two of them had met, Muiris had shown that same level of faith in her. How could she not trust him in return?
It was a little disheartening to think that their day of fun would be drawing to a close soon, but Ezmeralda knew that she would remember it for years to come. Out of all the years that she had come to the Flower Festival to celebrate, today had to be one of her favorites. She'd done things that she had never done before or even imagined herself doing, and she had to admit that she had truly had a blast. She glanced over at him as the setting sun brightened his dark pelt, and her eyes locked onto his red-eyed gaze for a moment before a bright smile pulled up the corners of her lips. "Fantastic!" She said excitedly to his response, her long tail waving behind her. Ezmeralda followed beside him as they walked on the outskirts of the crowd, and she was careful to keep her flower crown downwind from him. She'd hate for him to end the day with another fit of allergies. At the sound of his voice, her ears swiveled toward him, and she couldn't hide the smile that appeared on her face at his words. "I'm really glad you had a good time, Muiris. I had a lot of fun too. I-I honestly probably wouldn't have done some of those things we did today if it weren't for you, and I had a really great time doing them, so thank you." Ezmeralda admitted sheepishly. No one who knew her would probably ever guess that she would have participated in an actual race at the festival, and she was proud at the thought that maybe she was getting even just a teeny bit better at the whole self-esteem thing. Maybe she actually had hope of growing more confident in herself. "I'm really glad we crossed paths as well. Maybe it'll happen again sometime soon." She said in a hopeful tone, returning his lopsided grin with one of her own while her cheeks were brightened by a light blush.
She thanked Muiris for the drink that he handed her and took a few sips of the cool, sweet tea, already feeling more refreshed. Her eyes followed the crowd that was in the center of town. It was a bit crazy: upbeat music played, horses ran around either playing games or chasing after their familiars or children while others tried to talk over the music and others around them in order to chat to their friends. A smile painted itself on her muzzle though. Despite the craziness, it was so nice to see so many horses having such a great time, and it was such a nice change to see smiles rather than the hardened expressions she normally saw year round.
As she finished her drink and sat the cup beside Muiris's, she was caught off guard as he dragged her onto the dance floor. The song had changed to something a little more easy to dance to, and others joined them, moving to the beat of the music. Ezmeralda froze for a moment. Her eyes widening in shock as she began to realize something. She'd never really danced before. Of course, she had bounced around as a little foal to the beat of a song, but that had been years ago! She had grown so accustomed to sitting on the sidelines that she was bewildered to find herself here in the middle of it all. 'Come on, Ezzie. Just do something. Anything!' Ezmeralda thought to herself and looked over to see a playful, welcoming smile on Muiris's face. Her lips turned up in a crooked grin as she started swaying slightly to the music, getting used to the beat and the unusual movement. It was a strange feeling, but as she got used to it, Ezmeralda found herself enjoying the feeling of moving to the upbeat music and hearing the sounds of happy laughter and hoofbeats around them. Her eyes found Muiris's, shining with joy as she danced around him. "I-I've never really danced before." She confessed with a small grin and hoped that it wasn't obvious she was no seasoned dancer.

He smiled at her confession, his spiked shod hooves scraping the worn street beneath them. He hadnt either, now that he thought about it. His mother used to twirl him around every now and then on her good days, and claimed he was the best dancer she had ever seen, but that had been it. His father never let him even think of something so silly, as a stallion’s duty was to be a strong warrior. Dancing didnt make the cut. If she didnt look like a seasoned dancer, he didnt even want to know what he looked like. He chuckled lightly, his tied up tail sweeping behind him.
“Me neither!” He replied his voice louder than usual in order to be heard over the sound of the music and the other equine around them. He continued to let his body swing to the music the best it could, making sure to keep his large form from bumping into anyone around them. It seemed impossible, however, as everyone else seemed to be lost in their own little world.
The roan stallion turned his attention back to the mare before him, a lopsided grin crossing his face despite his usual tired look in his eyes. His ears constantly swiveled, unable to rest due to the rest of the herd surrounding them. His hooves stomped to the beat, his heart racing from the sight of his friend before him. Darkness had started to fall, torches lit around them and shining bright, warm light across the dancing horses and those sitting on the side lines. The sun was left hanging barely behind the mountains of Onea, casting its last bit of light before biding the War-Forged it’s last farewell.
The air had grown cold from the steadily growing darkness, a cool breeze drifting through the air and ruffling Muiris’ thick coat. The presence of the cooler weather was already starting to make the stallion feel better, as he was always happier the colder it was. His mother often told him he was like his father; always warm, even in the worsts of storms. She made it sound like it was a blessing, the Muiris saw it more as a curse! The days that the sun decided to play tricks on the cold herd were the worst.
The music slowed and so did the stallion’s so-called dancing. His hooves were finally allowed to remain in place as his ears laid back with a content sigh passing his lips. He found himself drawing closer to the painted mare, feeling the warmth of her skin against his as he softly brushed his muzzle against her cheek again with a hesitant smile. He was about to ask if she needed to be walked home, but then he remembered she had been here with her sister..
Her sister..
He hadnt meant to steal Ezmeralda away for the entire day, and almost felt guilty for it. He didnt feel too horrible, though, considering this had been the best festival he had been to for far too many years.
“I’ll let you go find your sister.” He said as he took a step back, his hooves shuffling across the cobblestone. “Thank you for the fun time, and tell your sister i apologize for stealing you all day.” He chuckled with a small grin. As much as he didnt want their day to end, he knew it had to. He was already starting to feel tired, and it would be best to get headed home before it got too dark, especially since he had a good walk ahead of him. He wouldnt leave yet, though, he wanted to make sure that Ezmeralda was safely on her way to her sister first.
Stepping to the side, he pulled his hair out of its tight bun, relief running across his skin as his long mane flopped back over his face and against his neck. His tail tangled with his legs, but felt good against the cool breeze of the young night.
“Have a good night.”
