Sunset on the horizon and a sleepless night ahead. Such is the way of his world. Defender Anereus has spent a rare week-end away from the capital city, ordered by his peers and his principal ( long may he reign) to take a fucking break for once in his life. And it worked, partly, because while he certainly didn't have any paperwork to sift through or assignments to coordinate or information to ponder, Thaumas would see his entire study set aflame before he considered for even a moment letting his body grow soft and easy. So it was on this evening, the last of his mandated vacation, that the sounds of the Defender's furious exercise could be heard echoing out from within the natural walls of one of the sea-caves on this stretch of coast. Perhaps a mile away there was a fairly popular little inlet where families spent their holiday afternoons, but only those with a motive unrelated to relaxation ever ventured too far from that place on this particular stretch of coast. He was fairly secluded, then, you see, having given his minor security detail the evening to themselves. He worked up a heady lather as the setting sun cast bouncing rays of dark russet-golden light into his God-crafted arena, practicing over and over again the series of fluid stretches and mock-attacks which had kept him supple since before his Guardian days. By your Divine Grace, O Heart of the Seas, it shall be long years still before this one finds himself thusly embattled for true stakes.Winded and satisfied, Thaumas crashed into the water like you'd crash into bed after a long day at work. Utterly comfortable, utterly unafraid, utterly reverent. He submerged himself completely and rose from the water again, standing belly-deep in the becalmed sea, relishing Her cool touch on his hot flesh. Long years, still.words: 310 tags: none! notes: first post in the board, why not, right? :D set on some beach somewhere, probably on that stretch between the big cities. something like this? pre-chapter. open to anyone for any purpose, but if you want sparring practice he'll only spar stallions (guardians preferred).

Arundhati - Talori Rogue -
Shadows had started growing long as the sun started to say its farewell to the wonderful world of Hireath, casting its last bit of bright rays across the sands of Aquore's beaches. A slow-moving current of ocean splashed softly upon the rigid walls of a cave that arched over the ground, chiseled to perfection with gaps just large enough to let in the evening sunshine. Hidden in the corner, just barely out of sight, a dark being floated. Her soft, red-tipped mane smoothly kissed the water's surface, a slick, long tail lazily twirled back and forth behind her to keep afloat, and all but her top line sat submerged in the cool depths of the cool, calm water. Her typical dull, silver eyes were lit up and dancing with the reflection of the water beneath her; blues and soft ocean green's swimming upon her light irises.
Normally, with the day coming to a close like it was, the Talorian Rogue would possibly be on her way home. She would check on each and every one of her lovely fish, lock and double lock the doors, and then slip away into her bed to read a nice book before being sucked away into an impossible night of tossing and turning and never getting any sleep. It was a struggle she would live with since the giving up of her daughter, but one she chose was worth her daughter's safety. But instead, her attention had been caught by a certain heavy-set roaned fellow, who she had been watching for what felt like hours. He seemed to be.. exercising? Practicing? Or maybe he was just delusional and fighting nonexistent demons that only he could see. For whatever reason it was, Arundhati found it very amusing.
Her gaze danced to follow him as he finally crashed into the water, giving her own sigh of relief with bubbles escaping her lips. Even she was getting tired, watching the stallion's endless workout along the beach. Slowly, as to not be noticed, the bleached black mare pulled her head out of the water. Her wet mane clung to her thick neck, water dripping off her thin coat. Slowly, she slunk toward the stallion, now not bothering to keep herself hidden. If he had not noticed her by now, then truly there was something wrong with his situational awareness. As the water grew more shallow, her long Tylosaurus tail and fins shrunk away and were replaced by her awkward, lanky long legs. The water brushed against the underside of her dark belly, her hooves squishing softly into the shifting sand below. Her ears laid back softly, but still in a welcoming fashion. Long eyelashes batted in his direction with the silver shine of her curious eyes.
"Im sorry, but i must ask." She said with a soft chuckle, her tone thick with an accent unlike any other's. "Is there a reason you were running yourself out on the beach, or are you just delusional?" Always the blunt sort, she was. A curious quirk of the mare's dark eyebrows caused her to pause in her tracks, the warm water lapping against her thin coat.

Two options as to her identity were made clear to him from the moment she finished her sentence: either this mare was a foreigner of no political significance, and thus unfamiliar with the figureheads of the Talori government, or she was a Talorian who (despite recognizing him) actively dismissed the import of his rank. Either she was someone he'd likely never see again, or she was someone he'd likely best keep an eye on.
And at present, he had no way of telling which category she fell into, and he was on vacation, so Thaumas Anereus opted for the path of least resistance.
"If I were delusional," he said lightly, in between deep breaths drawn as his body came off its adrenaline high, "I'd still have a reason."
It was a pleasantry, spoken in the Defender's deep, rolling voice, and though there were no traces of a smile on his face the words were spoken in good spirit.
He hadn't thought he'd be spied on here in this remote little sea-cave, but then perhaps he'd spent too much time away from the sort of finned folk who still had time for water-play. In the capital city, one had to spend most of one's time on four legs out of necessity. And in fact, the more deeply her mode of appearance sank into his subconscious, the more Thaumas Anereus began to ponder that perhaps his career, as much of a holy mission as he considered it to be, had over time separated him from his own people.
She was on his left, and a bit behind him as well now, standing in shallower water. He looked back at her over his shoulder, having followed her with his eyes as she ascended from the water. "But alas: it was only exercise."
And now, the thinnest of grins, and only around his lips, not his eyes. What can I say? Thaumas Anereus is bad at people.

Arundhati - Talori Rogue -
The mare nodded briefly, acknowledging his reasoning. Why someone would want to spend a beautiful evening like this working their heart out for a little sweat, she would never understand. A brief breeze blew through, carrying her thick mane against her neck and causing her to sigh softly. "Exercise, hm?" She purred softly, her gaze dipping down to watch her wavering reflection in the water at her hooves. She shifted her eyes down the water, now admiring his reflection without needing to look directly at him. She noticed his torn fin along his back, causing curiosity to pipe in her mind. She tipped her head to the side, her light silver eyes brightening. "Seems odd for a sea creature to want to spend all day exercising on land." She huffed lightly, picking up her head and scrunching her muzzle.
She suddenly tipped her head in the direction of his broken fin, her ears pricking forward with interest. "What happened there?" She knew the fins of the Hippocampi were something they were all to be proud of, and having one damaged could be a nice kick to the ego.. at least for most of them. This was part of the reason she was grateful that she did not have fins while on land- that, and being able to work with Pegasi without them shooting her hesitant glances. But, her day was drawing to an end, and she had nothing better to do with herself, so she thought it best to see if she could drag a story out of the older stallion.

"It is odd, isn't it?" he mused, tongue-in-cheek, pointedly ignoring the stranger's probe for the present. "Would that we were but of the sea. Alas; in Her infinite wisdom She has given us hooves, as well." He liked her pride, at least. Wave-walkers were too often content to be landlocked, and here was a mare who seemed to have a proper distaste for the soil. It was a quality to admire of her, and in his quest to avoid conflict, Thaumas Anereus focused on this quality as a point of common interest.
The next obvious question was whether she was local or not, because if he asked it the right way and she answered, he'd know the answer to his overarching curiosity for this meeting: is she a foreigner or a native? Is she ignorant or making trouble?
But the next obvious question was such trouble in itself, and wasn't he supposed to be vacationing? Wouldn't he earn at least one glower from his Emperor if he came back with a new arrest to add to his record? And especially at his position...
Thaumas sighed. He hadn't done real street work in years, and part of him missed it. A large part. He'd always had to work hard to feel relevant in his role as Defender; it seemed such a grande station, something so beyond what he could ever deserve. Even now he was cowed by his responsibility.
No, thought the heavy stallion. Best not today.
"You are rarely on your legs, then?"
