Karanila Serora Windracer Karanila comes to a stop on her windracer board mere inches from the edge of the Niurros river. Here the turquoise blue water runs narrow and deep, so she keeps well to the edge when she wades in to her hocks for a drink. It had been a quiet trip to the meeting spot, and for once the wind that wound down the edges of the canyon to frisk the blood bay pintaloosa's tail was cool. While her mane is tied back as it usual is when she travels, Karanila watches the ends of her tail dance in the burst of breeze, echoing her excitement. Who would not feel frisky in such weather? Of course, part of the energy thrumming through her was anticipation of the arrival of her cousin, Uluru. Their breaks had finally aligned and it was time to make good on an old challenge. While their dares typically involved tricks on their boards, the one planned for that day was to be as they were before they became seriously interested in their professions - an obstacle race on hoof! Ahead there were too many obstacles to make surfing on the boards much of a competition anyways. Karanila pranced and flexed her teke, strapping her board neatly into her body harness. The light equipment folded down and stored easily, and both she and Uluru were strong enough now to carry their own boards for some distance. Besides, they would not have the added weight of messages or packages - or even their regular saddlebags to hinder them for this race. In fact, it would be more of a sprint and they could break out their boards once they reached the flatter and progressively emptier landscape - but the goal today was to stay off their boards as long as possible. Once Uluru arrived, refreshed herself, and strapped in her own board, their race could begin. Not a moment after she has the thought, Karanila hears the skid of another windracer board behind her. She turns, and, recognizing the sail, rears up and calls a greeting to her cousin. "There you are! I thought you were going to chicken out and then I would win by default!"
Karanila lands back on all fours with a bounce and bobs her head excitedly. "Come on, come on. Get your drink and strap your board in so we can stretch and start!"

Uluru Serora Windracer
Despite being so excited for this day - it wasn't every day she managed to see Karanila, after all, and racing was definitely a plus - Uluru had, admittedly, been a bit late turning up to the meeting place. She hadn't left in time, then ran into a bit of a situation with an angry ostrich. She didn't feel much like retelling that story, but looking back on it, it was quite funny. At least she had managed to get there in the end, even tohugh it was a personal challenge for Uluru to arrive first to everything.
Uluru snorted when she heard Karanila's comment, "You thought I would run off? You know I'd never turn down a dare! I was thinking you might not even show up, and I'd be waiting here for you!" She takes a large sip of water and chews a small bit of the juicy fruit she had brought with her. She looks around the terrain, paying close attention to the obstacles. It was littered with slopes, rocks, odd little bushes and tall pillars of rock - the river even cut directly through part of the area. She'd need to find the fastest way around, even though it would much be more thrilling to go the challenging way - or maybe she would go the hard way? Why shouldn't she? She just wasn't sure yet, she was thinking about just going for it. She strapped herself in to her board, and thrusting her head back proudly, she says, "Well then? Are you ready for this? Or are we going to stand here all day - or all year, even - waiting for a rainstorm to happen?" She pulls herself and her board forward, towards Karanila and the 'starting line'.

Karanila
Serora Windracerreference sheet
Karanila snorts in response while Uluru sips water. "Me? Not show up? I think we've gone too long between visits if you thought I would be kept from a challenge from you." She hides a grin while Uluru assesses the terrain. The pintaloosa mare is secretly thrilled to see her cousin again after such a long breath of work. It had been a busy bout of carrying war orders as the nations clashed and defensive plans from the impending home invasion - not to mention that Karanila had taken it upon herself to sneak around and aid a few well-meaning Vagabonds on her runs.
At Uluru's challenging words Karanila prances up to place herself beside her cousin at the makeshift starting line, a mark she had made earlier by dragging a fore hoof through the dirt, and flicks her tail. "Pa-leeze. Are you sure you don't need more recovery time? I did have the lion's share, after all, as I arrived before you." She gives a mischievous grin as she goes over her plan for the route in her mind. There was an easy way to zigzag around the obstacles ahead - and even a place to jump the river before it cut across their path - but Karanila was not here only for the bragging right of first place. She, like Uluru, loves the thrill of a challenge and planned to take the hard route.
"Shall we count down together per our old house rules?"

Uluru Serora Windracer
"That's fine with me. Are you sure you don't need a head start, then?" Uluru challenges her, with a gleam in her eye and a grin on her face. There was no way in the world she would actually give Karanila a head start, they were to close in speed, though she liked to think otherwise, and it was fun to tease her sometimes. She was almost giddy with excitement now, hopping from hoof to hoof as she and Karanila counted down until the start of the race. As soon as they said go, Uluru kicked off, though not as fast as she'd thought she would be; she never knew it would be so hard to pull her board! It must have been heavier than she'd imagined. Right beside her, Karanila was making great progress, with both of them kicking up huge clouds of dust that ended up blocking their view every so often. The wind was starting to pick up now, but Uluru hardly noticed this, she was concetrating purely on the race - even though she tripped over rocks a couple of times, she hardly seemed to notice this, keeping her sights fixed straight ahead of her rather than looking down. After all, there was so much bigger obstacles scattered about that she would end up crashing right into one of them, small stones weren't that important compared to the stone pillars. Bashing her head into one would be bad enough, but she really wanted to win the race, she didn't know if she could stand the shame if she lost by running right into a pillar. Post: #2 | WC: 268

Karanila Serora Windracer
Karanila sticks her tongue out at Uluru's teasing. When they count down she coils like a spring, and when they shout the start she pushes off with all that coiled energy. She knows she matches Uluru closely in speed and kicks herself mentally when one of her pushes skids across the ground. She is determined not to face a humiliating loss because she couldn't find traction - or tripped and fell on her face! The pair speeds across the hard-packed canyon floor, jumping small obstacles and swerving around the larger boulders. Their hair streams behind them in the wind of their passage and the cloud of sand and dust tossed up by their hooves collects behind them in a pseudo storm. At one point the ground rises and then drops suddenly from under them and they are airborne for a few seconds before their hooves reconnect with the ground and they are off again. Ahead of them looms a long forgotten tree that had long ago fallen across the path just as the river narrows. They would either have to dart around it, leap the river, or leap over the trunk. Karanila glances at Uluru, hoping her cousin has been practicing her jumps as well. She leans into their pace and prepares to launch over the hallowed out bole.

Uluru Serora Windracer
Uluru, too, notices this fallen tree, and wonders for a moment how it had ever had enough water, but the most important thing on her mind is a choice; should she go over or around? Risking a quick glance at Karanila, she decides - she would go over, even though she hadn't really practiced jumping with a board attatched before. The only way to learn was to try, right?
As the log grew closer, she prepares for the leap... three... two... one... She takes off, coming back down to earth with a thud as her board rattles and hits against the log, she hears a scratching sound from inside but ignores it. There is only a short distance left until all the obstacles disappear now, she skirts around them, gathering speed, all while trying to ignore the strange thuds and flapping noises from behind.
The flat, empty landscape - perfect for boards - is in sight now, uluru prepares to ride on her board. As soon as she passes the last obstacle, she breaks out her board, relieved to have a break from sprinting. She relaxes more - though not losing any speed, in fact, she and Karanila are both getting faster now - and notices a dark shadow overhead, as well as hearing an angry... squawk? Before she has a moment to think, a great bird had landed on the ground right in front of them, shaking the earth. Uluru skids to a stop as the bird flaps its wings and screeches again - it seems to be warning them to get away, though they are far too close for its liking.

Karanila Serora Windracer
Karanila launches over the log in time with her cousin and though her own board, still attached to her side, also rattles against the log she can tell Uluru has not practiced this kind of jump before. A moment after they land the pintaloosa feels glee, but then the high scratching sounds coming from the log behind them causes her to jump. "Wait, Ulu, I think we should-"Thudding and flapping noises pulls Karanila's attention. She stares over her shoulder as the log rattles and something comes screeching out of one end of it too fast to see. Karanila feels a thrill of adrenaline and fumbles to break out her board. Uluru makes it to the flat landscape seconds before her, but rapid of pushes off the ground puts them even again. Karanila notices the shadow seconds before she hears the angry cry from overhead, and a great avian drops down before them from the sky. Karanila leans heavily on her board, skidding around the side of the great bird that flaps and screeches at them in warning. It was a thunderbird. The great bird was a species native to Sedo, particularly God's Landing which was just to the northeast of them, but Karanila had never seen one this close before - and she never could have guessed what it was doing so far from the plateau nesting grounds. Her wonder and questions evaporate, however, when its beak claps close over their ears. "Ride your inlines!" Karanila calls to her cousin only a moment before she does just that to pass by the predatory bird. She zooms by so close to the edge of the thunderbird's range that its feathers brush her shoulder. As soon as she rounds the thunderbird she clacks back down on all the wheels of her board and twists to check on Uluru.

Uluru Serora Windracer
Uluru curses as she hastily turns to escape the thunderbird and tumbles down to the edge of the river. A thunderbird? Here? Just their luck - why did it come here, of all places? She tries turn back towards the obstacle course behind her - but she has fallen down near a ridge, she would need to go right around until she got to the slope. She does just that, and stretching her head, she tries to figure out where Karanila is; and watches in horror as the thunderbird lunges at Karanila. She quickly ascends the slope, and breathes a sigh of relief as it swoops away from her.
Not for long, however, the thunderbird circles overhead, then screeches in fury and dives towards Uliuru. She rears and screams, "Get out of here, you ugly chicken!" She realises this was a bad idea when the thunderbirds tries to peck her all over, she ducks down and blindly rides away on her board while clouds of red dust blow in her face.
Sheltered under a sandstone arch, she calls out for Karanila,"Rani? Are you there? Are you alright?" Uluru warily watches the skies, the thunderbird is nowhere in sight, but she can hear its screeches and shrieks. Almost praying, she hopes it has gone and that it has not ogne to gather others. She cautiously steps out of her hiding place, trying not to sneeze as sand flies up her nose, and spots Karanila - thankfully unhamred - not too far away from her.

Karanila Serora Windracer
After watching the bedraggled bird take off after Uluru towards the edge of the river, Karanila throws her weight, leaning so that she swerves closer to the thunderbird. As Uluru scrambles near the ridge Karanila, circles under the thunderbird's belly to distract it . "Come on, fatty! The tastiest morsels are the hardest to catch!"
The thunderbird screeches angrily and lunges at Karanila, but the pintaloosa dodges out of the way - though she is still close enough to clip one of the bird's wings with the mast supporitng her board's sail. Then the thunderbird takes to the sky - only to dive back towards Uluru. At her cousin's screamed words Karanila struggles not to break down with laughter and speeds closer. She is intent on deflecting the pecking attack Uluru is under when the red clouds of dust obscure her vision. She skirts the cloud, coming to a stop when the thunderbird shoots upwards and out of sight. She tracks it across the blue sky, listening to its shrieks. At her cousin's cries she turns. "Here! I'm here!" She comes to a stop beside Uluru as the other emerges from the sandstone arch. "Well. That was unexpected. I've never seen one of those in the flesh before. Are you alright?" She inspects leopard appaloosa and is relieved to find only minimal scrapes from their escape. "So," she starts, a twinkle in her eyes, "you got enough juice to finish our flat race?" They had long passed the obstacle-ridden portion of the course by now, and she was hoping Uluru also still had that unfulfilled competitive need still burning inside even after their unplanned encounter. Even if this race ended in a draw right there under the sandstone arch they had another fantastic story to spin.

Uluru Serora Windracer
Uluru, trying not to collapse as her legs start to buckle beneath her, grins and gazes up at sky - slightly nervous but trying not to show it.
"I've never seen one this close either - I didn't realise they were so big! We'll have quite a tale to tell everyone when we get back." She shakes the sand out of her mane, "I'm fine," she replies.
Uluru sees the sparkle in Karanila's eye that appears when she's making a challenge, she starts to grin even wider as the pintaloosa dares her to finish the race. "You bet I can! Chased around the obstacle course by a thunderbird, with a board attached? Ha, that was a breeze! I could do it all day!" Uluru responds with delight, trying not to show how exhausted she is from their encounter with the thunderbird - after all, they had come here to race, and they would race no matter what happened in between. Uluru was already itching to get going, she could tell Karanila was as well. "Well? Let's get started, shall we?" she challenges. Looking down at the gradually sloping sand ahead of them, with the course far behind, Uluru thinks that this is her kind of race - there wouldn't be any shortcuts for this one, speed was the only way to win, and she always loved trying to beat Karanila in races like this.
