Featuring Kell and Ruaridh (and Kell's NPC brothers)
Year 1678 +/- 5 years
Kell couldn't keep the extra spring out of her step as she bounded down the mountainside after her brothers. Capture the flag? She had never heard of such a game before! It seemed like great fun though; Teed was kind enough to give her a short explanation of what she should expect as they picked their way down towards a clearing divided by a stream. Ferth was dropping farther back behind them; she had heard him mutter that he was waiting for a friend. After all, you can't have teams with only three horses!
They reached the clearing pretty quickly, and Kell wasted no time galloping around its perimeter and inspecting the terrain. It was mostly level with a few bumps and divots here and there, pretty grassy, with some bushes and a clear, shallow, icy cold stream running through. It was perfect for a game of capture-the-flag! The stream could be their divider, and one team could have one side of the stream and the other team the other side! Wow, she was a genius.
"Okay, Kell," Teed called, his buckskin coat a stark contrast to the green around them. "We're on the left side. Ready to go hide our flag?" He gave her a stick wrapped with brightly covered fabric. She took it and ran off, kicking up her heels. Stashing it underneath the exposed roots of a big bush, the bay filly returned with a grin. "Ready!" she said.

RUARIDH | WARFORGED | SHIELD "COME ON RU, SERIOUSLY! Pick up the pace!" Ferth chuckled, hanging back from his siblings. Ru picked a path down the side of the mountain, hopping and skidding like a well trained mountain goat. He huffed at the colt below him, rolling his eyes in mock irritation before leaping and landing heavily beside him.
"Let them get ahead... I've hidden ours already! Ru grinned mischievously, earning a wink from his friend who nipped his whither as he passed. Ru sideswiped with his offside hind, and squeaked in playful response, tossing his head and sending his forelock into disarray.
"READY or NOT!!" Ru whinnied hoarsely in an undeniably over-excited tone, shouldering boisterously past his teammate, ears flattened to his skull and eyes narrowed against a biblical shaft of sunlight that spread through the languid sway of leaves and branches.
The sandy male shot a comical brow quirk over his shoulder at Ferth. He shifted his weight from foot to foot, churning the ground beneath into an oatmeal mess. All it took was a nod from Ferth, and he was off. His vision was bleached to nothing by the light, momentarily and he blindly sprung from the edge of the stream's bank. Soaring in a poorly defined arc, he landed nimbly in the shallows at the other side, water exploding in a torrent that dispersed through the air like a spray of glinting crystals.
Whilst 'Capture the flag' wasn't necessarily his favourite game, he couldn't deny the level of strategy involved to actually succeed. The game had its uses, that was for sure. Or rather, he could see the point of playing their chosen game over, say... Hopscotch.
Their team had one of the rocky outcrops staked out, and had managed to hide the bright blue and yellow braid edged piece of fabric within the remains of a hollow tree. It was all fun and games, but Ruaridh and Ferth had always been known to be somewhat... Competitive, when it came down to flag capturing. A quality, some might say, that would stand the boys in good stead later on.
"Think I can see them!" Ferth gusted as he fought to keep up with Ru's pace.
"Shhh... I'll circle round to the right, you take the left..." Ru giggled, sighting the bright bay coat that belonged to Kell through the foliage. "Just... For the sake of the GODS, don't trip over like you did last time... You gave us away!"
"Uh... That bramble was out to get me." Ferth pouted, his expression somewhat petulant before it cracked into a bright and amused smile.
They parted ways, Ru hanging back slightly to ensure that neither Teed, or his sister, could pass them.
