Briny couldnt sleep. Her mind was busy with the past events, causing her to toss and turn as the moon turned to sun. She had always struggled to sleep, but it wasnt anything a good smoke and some tea could fix. Yet.. here she was, awake as sun slowly rose, her eyes burning and mind fuzzy. Her boyfriend had adopted a child.. a kirin child.. Alya had come back after abandoning them. War was on the rise. She felt as though she was waiting for the other shoe to drop, her muscles tense and heart always racing. This was not how she wanted to live. She wanted to be happy. She wanted everyone to be happy. Why was that such a difficult concept to grasp?
Letting out a sigh, she rolled out from beneath her makeshift tent by the river, glancing at her reflection in the water. She was a mess. Her typical bright golden eyes were dulled, bloodshot, and half lidded. Her hair shot in all sorts of different direction - more than usual, anyways. Her ears were floppy, her lips struggled to smile. She was not herself, and she didnt like it.
Plunging her head into the water, she shook out her neck before pulling her head back up, water dripping from her face and running down her neck and chest. The cool water had her feeling refreshed - at least for now - and a brief smile found her lips as she shook loose droplets from her mane. At least she had the water; her first love, her second home.
Turning on unsteady hooves, either from the aftermath of her late night smoke or the lack of sleep, she didnt know, she trudged her way back to her tent.
"Wake up, Riven." She called out to her familiar, only to get angry chirping in return. The caiman didnt enjoy mornings.. or anything that meant he had to be awake, anyways. However, he pulled himself out of the blanket that he had been wrapped in and crawled into Briny's saddle bags as she slung them over her shoulder. The little mare reached for her wooden stick - the closest to a weapon she was ever going to have - and slid it into place in the strap across her girth.
She was ready to go. She didnt feel ready, but she sure looked ready.
It was then that she heard hooves approaching and she poked her head out of her tent. She recognized the figure approaching, a smile finding her lips. "Taeith!" She called out, hoping the young mare would hear her.

-Taeith- It was all too familiar. The sound and vibration of the earth under her hooves rumbling. The sick feeling in the pit of her stomach as she felt the same earth give way, followed by the feeling of her stomach rising into her throat as she fell, fell into the darkness. The blackness closed in on her, swallowing her as she dropped, unending into the pit. The earth shook again, this time around her as the small light above disappeared, the ground closing her off from rescue as she was taken.
Taeith bolted up with a silent scream, her mouth hanging open as she tried to register where she currently was. She got up quickly, ignoring the cold sweat that had broken out over her skin, rushing to the entrance of the tent she was borrowing on this small gathering expedition. She pushed the fabric aside to see the dawn of a new day, purples and deep blues turning into pinks and oranges. The morning air rushed into her room, clearing her senses as Taeith returned to a normal state of being. She wasn’t underground, she wasn’t...falling.
The gatherer stepped back from the opening, looking at the inside of the tent, taking in the sight of the tossed blankets she had kicked off of her in her rush to get some air. Instead of feeling relieved, she felt restless.
She needed the wide open sky above her and the vastness of her home stretched out in front of her.
Grabbing her saddle bag, which held a waterskin and other light supplies inside of it, Taeith slipped out of the tent, breaking from the group. Stretching her legs as she crossed the ground at a swift trot, Tae looked to the sky as the sun started to make it’s appearance. She thanked Alya for the loving morning, and prayed that where she was heading would be full of treasures to take back to the herd. Tae had decided to head to the Valley of Melodies, an area that held plenty of hidden gems deep within the various caverns that had been naturally carved by the elements. In her mind, she could find some pieces of her collection while she looked for more natural veins to supply the herd with an income opportunity.
Taeith followed a well-trodden path as the sun rose higher into the sky, and before she knew it she was coming up on another party of nomads. It didn’t seem like anyone else as awake as she got closer, but as she got closer, Tae noticed someone was, indeed, up and about. In a matter of minutes, the figure noticed her too.
‘Taeith!’
If it hadn’t been for their recent journey together, Taeith was sure she wouldn’t have recognized the voice that had called out to her. It was Briny, the light-hearted hippocampus with the bubbly personality. Taeith slowed down as she got closer, giving the other mare a soft smile and reached out to bump muzzles in greeting.
“Good morning Briny! Where is your group off to?” she asked, adjusting her saddle bag around her shoulders. “Going to look for supplies?”

The mare pulled herself from her tent as Taeith approached, bumping muzzles with the younger mare in greeting. She asked of the rest of her group, and Briny's ears flicked forward as she gave the camp a quick glance. "Yeah." She replied with a halfhearted grin. "I must have overslept." Anyone who knew anything about Briny would know that she never overslept. She was always the first one up and out, before even the sun had graced the sky with its presence. It was hard to oversleep when one couldnt sleep at all, so Briny was lying straight through her teeth. She hoped Taeith wouldnt notice.
In order to make sure the other mare didnt question her, she adjusted her saddle bag at her shoulder and turned to look in the direction she had been heading. "Where are you off to then?" She asked, pressing her hooves hard into the sand beneath her as she wobbled slightly from the sudden direction change. Sleep deprivation did a good job of screwing with her center of balance, and just that little turn caused her world to sway.
She squinted against the brightness of the sun, noticing the formations of the Valley of Melodies ahead. "Out gem hunting, im guessing?" She tipped her head, looking back to her younger friend. "Can i come? Im already late enough to my own job." She offered a grin, though it lacked the typical cheeriness, no matter how hard she tried to force it.

-Taeith- ‘Yeah. I must have overslept.’
Taeith gave Briny an understanding nod, unaware that the other mare was lying. There were numerous days where Tae would miss the meetup of a group going out, mosty due to laziness on her part, and would only catch up if the group paused for a break. Lately though, thanks to her nightmares, she was usually up and starting her days early.
‘Where are you off to then?’
Before Tae could reply, Briny wobbled slightly and in reaction the gatherer reached out with her purple teke to help steady the hippocampus. Taeith assumed Briny must’ve still been a bit groggy from too much sleep, once again finding no reason to question the odd behavior.
“Yeah, you caught me,” Taeith replied, a large grin spreading across her face. “I wanna try and find something special now that Ayla has returned to us. If I can find something super unique, it might fetch a good trading price!” There was clear excitement in her voice as she spoke, her eyes shining with determination. Nothing like a good gem hunt to clear her head and get the restless feeling out of her bones.
“You’re more than welcome to tag along. I could use the company and some extra eyes.”
Taeith reached out and bumped Briny on the neck lightly, before she started off in the direction of the Valley of Melodies. She kept the pace at a steady trot, aware that Briny might not want to move too fast and tire out before they even started digging around for hidden gems. With the sun rising, she hoped they could make it to a cavern before the temperature rose. Even though it was winter, the desert still could get a little too warm during the day.
It was a few moments before Taeith decided to start a conversation, more concerned that Briny was keeping up with her. “Were you okay on The God’s Landing? You took quite the fall when you fainted. I don’t think I noticed you leave…” she trailed off, thinking back to recent events. “At least this time we won’t have to worry about random jackalopes scaring us out of our skins.”
