Jemin
---
I have only ever loved you, my children.
The divine words thrummed in his head. He turned, pushed through the crowd, descended down the stairs, taking two or three at a time. Her voice persisted. He couldn’t get it out - couldn’t shake his anger, his bewilderment, a sense of such dire insignificance.
God’s Landing. The name oozed pretension. Of course it had to be literal.
After what may have been several milleniums, his hooves touched ground, normal ground. He released a heavy breath. A smattering of Serorans stood at the foot of the mighty plateau, readying for departure and exchanging excited chatter. His approach didn’t go unnoticed. The noise died in their throats, their brows furrowing into bitter stares, but nonetheless they quickly cleared - allowing him to pass. Evidently, his earlier outburst had not been appreciated. If Jemin was ashamed - if he was even capable of shame - he certainly didn’t show it.
“Camel crap, all of this. Just a load of camel crap.” Sending his spectators a crass tail-snap, he continued on his way, spitting words through clenched teeth. The ruffled mule hardly took notice of an all too familiar voice (an all too close voice) until it became too late to evade.

The mare had awoken in a haze, her mind spinning, sand sticking to her curly hair. She hadnt known what to make of the experience, though she knew one thing.. All the pointed looks in Jemin's direction had not been warranted. There was a truth behind his anger, one that Briny herself could understand. She pulled herself up from her place in the sand, turning her head toward her cousin just to see him disappearing out of site over the crest of God's Landing. Her attention shifted to her friends and her boyfriend for a moment, her gaze lingering for only a moment, before she leapt into a trot to follow after Jemin. She didnt want anything to do with the others anyways.
She expertly dived down the stairs, her nimble hooves carrying her easily toward her long eared cousin. Her ears flicked forward at the sound of his words, muttered angrily under his breath. Her ears laid back, brow narrowing ever so slightly.
"Absolutely not." She spoke as she came up behind him, her long tail flicking behind her. "Both of us are not allowed to have a terrible day, and I was looking forward to doing some complaining." She forced her typical smile, though it lacked the joy it often held. Her heart was confused, between the sudden appearance of their goddess that had left them behind and the fact that her boyfriend - against her wishes - decided to adopt a child.. a kirin child.. She didnt know what to think anymore.

No, no he did not want to deal with this right now. He wouldn’t. He refused to participate.
Inadvertently quickening his pace, Jemin stalled the incoming conversation with scarcely any tact nor grace. Keep walking. Keep walking. Don’t make eye conta - too late! The hippocampus mare - capable of a speed greater than her small stature should allow - easily rounded him and fell into his stride, words already spilling off her tongue. That was to be expected. Much like him, though in a different vein entirely, his little cousin had always been a talker. She was a child at heart; easily distracted, easily excited, easily lied to. Her insufferable good cheer and pathetic naivety were the last things he needed.
That, and also her scaled rat.
Or so he thought. The guppy’s smile was notably forced, and her voice lacked it’s usual mirth. A bounce was even absent from her gait. For the briefest moment, he forgot his annoyance; scanning over her slight form, from the black tip of her shark’s tail to the frazzled curls of her mane, in search of any indications. She looked fine, simply...tired.
Indeed, his cousin was full of surprises today.
...I was looking forward to do some complaining.
Clicking his tongue to the roof of his mouth, the snake met her smile with insincere concern. “I’m sorry, who are you? What happened to the Briny with a tender heart?” Jemin looked back to that cursed landing, comfortably distant now, and squinted dusky eyes. “Funny - I thought you’d be sucking it up to Alya right about now.”

Her ears flicked back from the words that followed, snorting with amusement. She paused as she glanced over her shoulder, noticing the silhouettes of some of the group still standing on the landing. The breeze played with her hair, pushing out the heat of the day to replace it with the coolness of the night. She shook her head as she turned back to her cousin.
"..As you said." She replied with a roll of her eyes. "She abandoned us when we needed her most. I would not expect such a warm welcome." She let a shrug roll of her shoulders. Had she been in a better mood, she would probably be more star struck.. but now, she couldnt care less if she tried.
"Actually, i was hoping for some advice. You're old and wise, after all." This time, a real teasing smile found her lips. Even if she was in the worst mood ever, nothing would stop her from picking on her cousin. She knew he would do the same.
"Kris adopted this.. kid. I had no say in the matter and he knows im not a fan of them. The thing is, this boy is a kirin." She paused for a moment, a shiver running down her spine as she recalled the words Alya had said only moments before.
THEY AND THEIR KIND SLAUGHTERED THOUSANDS.
"I dont know.. I already was not comfortable with it, but now after what Alya warned us.." She bit her lip as she finally made eye contact with Jemin, raising her brow and flicking her ears to the side. She felt helpless. In all of Serora, the herd that basically lines up to take in a familyless child, Kris had to be the one to do it.. and it didnt sit well with her. For once, the mare with all the answers, was lost.
"What do i do?"

Of all his few and potential allies, Briny was perhaps the last horse he’d expect to stand by his cynicism. Yet here she was.
Jemin was impressed, really, by her shift in attitude, enough that it prompted a dry smile to crack the thin line of his mouth. She abandoned us. Yes, but how could no one else - no one but he and his gullible cousin - understand that? The herdfolk let idealisms get the best of them, tinting their perspective rosy-pink.
She continued talking, rapidly, and he scarcely had the chance to interject more than a “hey, I haven’t gotten gray hairs yet” before she continued. Her topics were loose. Relationship issues, adoption, kids, kirins, Alya - wait, adoption?
...her and Kristofer.
Adopting a child.
He pulled back, abrupt, and met her with a wide-eyed stare. “You mean you - you and Kris - with a kid? A kid?” There was no lack of skepticism to his tone, wuffs of laughter bubbling in the back of his throat. Briny was awkward at best and inept at worse with children; between her and that oaf of a boyfriend (though Kris certainly did make good company), he didn’t stack their odds of success too highly.
“You don’t have to settle - it’s not too late to ditch him. There’s more fish in the sea, guppy.”
Fine advice for him, who dropped partners as quickly as he found them, but not what she wished to hear. The mare was lost, hesitant and likely uncertain; she possessed loyalty, the type to deepen conflict, that he couldn’t apprehend. He simply never stuck around to resolve his own issues.
“Have...have you met this kid?” Jemin reined himself in, a rare action of decency. “Forget what Alya said. Unless Kris gives the little snake a knife, the boy is harmless. Annoying, sure, but still harmless - children are hardly capable of, ah, of genocide.”

She studied him carefully, hoping to gauge his reaction before he spoke. She had just dumped a ton of information on him, and now that she had said it all.. she felt dumb. Her problems always felt so trivial compared to others.
“You mean you - you and Kris - with a kid? A kid?”
She pressed her lips together and nodded quickly. "Right?!" She breathed, almost desperately. If Jemin understood how ridiculous that was, why couldnt Kristofer? "He told me i didnt have to have anything to do with the kid, but thats.. not how that works." She huffed. It was kind of hard hanging out with your boyfriend when there was a needy infant around. It wasnt like he could be ignored.
"There’s more fish in the sea, guppy.”
The mare sided, her ears flopping off to the side in defeat. She had a feeling he was going to say that. Jemin was a professional at ditching lovers just to find another one. Briny wasnt like that, though. She was loyal to a fault and hated breaking hearts. Her chest was tightening just at the thought; it was painful to think about, even. She wished life could be trouble free and happy, but it rarely worked that way.
She nodded as he asked if she had met the kid, and let out a breath. "His name is Inigo." She replied. "He has wings as well.. So i guess hes some sort of.. hybrid," However that worked. "But that doesnt make me any less uncomfortable." She bit her tongue. Jemin did have a good point. The kid wasnt even a year old yet, what could it do other than be an annoyance?
"Maybe you're right.. but that doesnt excuse the fact that he did it knowing i wasnt okay with it, and then expects everything to be just fine." She frowned. It was just so frustrating, but she did feel better now that she got it off her chest.

A hybrid. Jemin had met very few of those, and wasn’t overly fond. They were flashy, too much so, and kirin genetics would do little to help. Whether due to bias or preference - likely the former - he’d rather take the fine and simple look of the common horse over Ignacio’s scaled children. There was something primal about them, something chilling.
Inigo. The little beast had a name.
Briny spoke again of Kris’s assumed betrayal. She was worked up on the subject, and perhaps rightfully so. “Someone sounds ready to release hell,” he remarked with satire, lowering his head to the shorter mule’s level. “...but you make it hard to feel worried for the poor sap. You’ll be over this by tomorrow morning, tops.”
Evidently, he hadn’t thought that one to completion. Condensation, however slight, bled into his tone. He was accustomed to getting away with such things, accustomed to the point of habit. Surely Briny wasn’t capable of holding grudges, not for longer than a day.
But then he saw her frown. Saw the pain in her eyes, the exhaustion in her breath. The confusion, the helplessness. He saw it, and recognized it - he’d experienced the same, under different circumstances. He released a sigh.
“...Most wise old horses would advise you to talk it out with him, yeah?”
