Little Bird | Breim | Outsider
It was another average day in the underground city of Nariah for the Outsider: making sure her family was fed before school and cleaning up the house a bit before heading out to the market for goods. Little Bird placed a kiss on both of her daughter's foreheads and saved one for her husband, Diony, as well before they dashed off to the library for school. It was truly a blessing that Diony worked at the library as a teacher. It meant that he could drop the kids off at school at the same time as going to work, but it also meant that, at times, Diony served as their teacher for certain subjects. The thought of all of them sitting in a classroom together brought a wistful smile to her face as she shrugged on her blue cloak, sliding her wings through the carefully sewed holes so that they sat above the soft fabric. Being an Outsider in Breim was hard but showing her wings to those old-fashioned enough to trust her due to her breed seemed to alleviate some of the discrimination.
She trotted down the steps toward the market, shards making soft clicking noises as they clanked together in the small bag she kept under her cloak to make her purchases of the day. 'Let's see. We need sweet potatoes, noodles, vegetables... oh and tea!' Arges had asked for some the other day, and they had been all out.
On most occasions, Little Bird kept the hood of her cloak up over her head, keeping the scar on her neck hidden in the shadows in order to keep the worrisome Breimians from worrying even more about her presence, but today, she kept it down, enjoying the cool air blowing through her curly hair as she quickly walked toward the shops. It was days like these that she missed the feeling of fresh air underneath her wings as she soared over Hireath, but she also wouldn't go back to change her decision to retire as a Vindicator.
Those days still haunted her dreams, but she recalled most of her memories with fondness and pride. After all, if she had never been a Vindicator, she would have never met her husband. Of course, there was also times of great danger and near-death experiences. Those were the ones that kept her up at night, caused her to hold her loved ones a little closer, and to use her trained eye to watch those around them with extra care.
Finally arriving at the market, Little Bird made a few of her purchases, putting her items in a wooden basket for safe-keeping. It was when she made her way down the road when she caught a familiar sight: the broken, smoothed horn of a unicorn in the crowd. The pegasus mare stopped for a moment and looked over at the rose grey mare whose bright blue horn and scars told her that she could only have been one thing once upon a time. She had once been a labor slave. Little Bird felt a wave of pity despite the mare's current freedom. She knew what the life of a labor slave entailed and how brutal each day was.
Quickly dashing into a nearby shop and returning to where she had last seen the unicorn, Little Bird approached quietly, stepping up beside her with a small smile. "Excuse me, miss." She said in a soft but reassuring tone she had used many times before. "I wanted to give you these," she spoke and held out the cup of tea and desert that she had bought moments before. "I'm sorry for everything you've been through, but I'm glad you lived to see what freedom is like."
