Characters Featured Rycaron & Corrine Setting Aftermath of chapter 5, when the Flock and Serorans take leave, but before the Emperors Funeral
So much had happened since then, yet it only had been a few days? Was it really that long, but not so long ago? Corrine was loosing tracks of her days, had it been a few days? Or was it only a day? Gods, she didnt know. Her work was never ending and her own shop still somehow intact, gave away to shelter to those in need. As for her? She was out with others on rescue missions, working on those that needed deep care and instant work. She helped advise younger clerics in their work as they worked through the town trying her best to keep her thoughts on the job. Not one what she really wanted to think about. Her dear Divine changed, to Rycaron. Oh, that made her heart sting, she prayed he was well, but with the Emperor dead, and the Divine changed herself. Her mind was drastically assuming something had to happen as well. Where was he? Was he still here? Surely he had to be? Chest began to tighten more, no, no no no. Control yourself, she chided. Looking to the others, she spoke of needing a break, a second to recollect herself. The other clerics would be alright without her for a short few.
Walking herself to a small place to herself, she took in deep breaths, working on trying to calm her mind. But how could it not take over her. She heard of them returning, but so much has changed in a few short minutes. Gods, all she can think about the stupid fights, and her bickering, gods, she should have kinder. Not so brash with her words, heaven help her, she was just like her mother. Corrine shook her head, as she relaxed more in her fine metal mobility cart. Allowing herself to ease the tension on her front legs, closing her eyes taking in steady breaths. It was going to be alright, it was all going to be alright. Things were going to change for the better, Cascade wouldn't let them suffer anymore? A sift sigh escaped her lips as she kept her eyes closed trying to steady herself in the midst of the chaos of her mind.

It had taken him a while, but he had managed to find the time to slip away from his duties again. The first had been to go see Eve and make sure that she was alright, which...she mostly was. But then he had been dragged into the planning and plotting that was required with so many things going on in the country. But a corner of his mind had kept circling back to another mare, one he needed to see, needed to make sure she was alright. He hadn't been able to task a guardian with bringing him word of her either, everyone was simply too busy.
But now, now he was free for a moment, putting off any more reports and leaving the palace. A guardian shadowed him, his personal escort to look after his safety. Quiet fell before his appearance, before being replaced by whispers as the Sage entered the Healer's Quarter. With a quiet word he was directed toward where Corrine was working, or rather where she was currently taking a break. With another quiet order his escort stepped off to the side, to watch from a distance and afford the official a modicum of privacy with which to speak to the Grand Cleric.
Aqua gaze settled on her form as he approached, one that he knew so well, and at the same time seemed alien to him in this form. He had seen her once, from afar, in her mobility cart, but had not been able to see or speak to her for months. So much more time had slipped away since the day of the bombing, so much had happened. They had argued, and grown apart, but for what? Did any of it really matter any more, in the wake of everything that was still going on about them?
Rycaron felt trapped in a whirlpool of emotion and confusion. Of uncertainty.
"Corrine, I have found you," the Sage announced softly, though voice was of a deeper octave than usual for him. And while he wore his diplomat's mask to hide the swirling emotions within his heart and soul, it was chipping. Oh was it cracking. The public would never notice, such was his skill and experience at keeping his mask in place, but someone like Corrine or Eve would easily see the chinks, the way he was holding himself together by threads.
"I...I needed to see you, to make sure you were okay. I am sorry, Corrine, for everything before," Rycaron added, words spilling from him in a quiet rush before she could say anything else. Words he had needed to say for a while now, to make sure she heard in case she sent him away again. The stallion wanted to reach out, press his forehead to hers, touch her curling locks with his teke, anything, but he held still, not sure how she would receive him, and not wanting to indulge any scandalous behavior in a public place.

"Corrine" The softness of her name being spoken, drew her from the chaos of her mind and troubled heart, yet when here eyes opened. There he was, the one that took her thoughts, made her heart worry and ache. He was here. Whatever he said after her name fell on deaf ears, because he was here. He was okay, gods be good, he was okay, more then okay, he looked fine, he still had all his limbs, no scarring, her eyes raced over his form, before settling over his face. Rycaron, he was here with her. Suddenly all their fights this bickers, times lost from their foolish stubborn hearts meant nothing. "Rycaron." Tears felt close to breaking, fuck it she thought boldly. Had they not all suffered enough to let their mask split, between long lost souls finding each other. "Gods, I was so worried!" she nearly shouted out him, emotions pouring out of her.
Tears fell from her face, as she instantly broke the distance between them. "I am so sorry Rycaron, for it all, for everything." she remarked as placed her head into his chest. taking in a second to feel his heartbeat, he was alive, he was well. It was going to be okay. "So much has happened, and you are okay aren't you?" she asked taking a short step back, her cart wheeling back with ease, as she looked at him. "After the Emperors death, I was so worried about what happened, we've lost so much. I couldn't lose you too." Corrine looked at him, and she wondered where they were now in a sense. Tragedy changes everything, for good for worse. Perhaps she was too bold, her mind already creeping back in to reign in the rawness of her emotion, slipping that mask on her face, blinking the tears away taking in a steady breath as she took one more step back, widening the gap between them.
"Forgive me if this is too bold." she remarked lightly glancing at him. "I've just don't want to loose you, not to our petty fights and arguments. We've lost so much time, I don't want to lose anymore time with you. With everything that has happened, perhaps it's knocked some sense back into me, but still I feel time is too short and cant afford to miss out on life anymore. Im just, gods Im so happy you are alive, you have no idea how much weight it has lifted from my shoulders just to see you, to see you here with me, alive okay." Corrine chuckled a bit feeling foolishly, but it was good for the moment the two where alone here for a second it was just them and things felt a bit more in place.

Tears. Oh, why were there tears?
Rycaron could feel his mask chipping even more, crumbling under the emotions he saw before him, felt swirling within him. Was she still angry with him? Did she not want to see him?
With everything that had happened, his mind leaped to pessimism instead of hope.
Instead there was an apology dripping from her lips, and suddenly she was pressing her head against his chest. Wave Mother have mercy, he was melting into a puddle. "No," the Sage croaked softly when she moved back, unable to bite back the instinctive response to the lose of her warmth. And it was with a sense of sadness that he saw her draw her healer's mask up and slid it into place, though he felt he knew the reasoning behind it. Wasn't he wearing his for the exact same reason?
With a decisive move and a swift prayer to Cascade that he wasn't doing irreparable harm, the stallion cast a glance toward his guardian companion, nodding his head toward him in a quiet order to make sure they continued to have whatever privacy they could. It wasn't complete, but at least they weren't out in a crowd, or surrounded by Corrine's patients and fellow clerics.
With decisive movements the hippocampus stepped forward as Corrine spoke, curling his neck about hers and drawing her in close for a hug. He drew in a deep breath of her scent, mask disappearing as he hid his face in her curls. "There's nothing to forgive, Corrine. And I...I feel the same. It's why I'm here, why I couldn't stay away. Everything is in a state of flux, and I'm trying my best to keep up with it. But you, you have always been as a constant, even if we weren't speaking, or hadn't seen each other for years. You've never been far from my mind, and you are one of the few equines left who is dear to me. I've lost two brothers, but I will not lose you," Rycaron intoned, murmuring the last into her curls from where he simply couldn't let go just yet. Her warmth and scent were a balm to his still aching heart, and surely no one would deny him this comfort?

So tender he was, did the others get to see this side of him. Her heart beating rapidly as he closed the distance between them. Her cheeks became flushed, oh she was foolish as some love sick filly. Though this moment was too sweet for her to let go as she curled herself back into the hug. Her cheek resting against his neck, feeling his heartbeat, oh such a wonderful sound she thought with joy. Ears flicked back as she took in all his words, he had lost so much, the Defender and now the Emperor. It was so much on his shoulders, so much and it pulled at her heart.
He spoke of no apologizes being needed, they both acted foolishly at times, she supposed even the best of them did. Though she took in a deep steady breath. "I thank the gods they brought you back here safely. Everyone needs you, the new Emperor to come, Eve." she felt herself blushing all the more, what was going on with her now? It was like the time so long ago within the gardens of the sea. Where her emotions came through and she was losing control once more. "I need you too Rycaron." she paused her breath a bit shaky. How does one say the words that needed to be said? How do they fall so easily from the lips of others, but feel stuck in her throat? "I love you." she whispered out to him, letting the faint breeze take her words away with them. It was fearful to put one's self out there once more. Had they not done this all before? But things were different this time around. They have grown they have changed. Sometimes perhaps things don't happen right the first time, so that perhaps the second time things can fall into place. "I love you." she said once more with more strength in her voice then her soft admittance from a mere second before. Gods she loved him, and she'd be damned if she missed a chance with him. Not this time.

"I know. I was praying to the Wave Mother every day that I could make it back to see my home, herd, and loved ones," Rycaron agreed quietly, touched though also feeling the weight of her words as they reminded him of his various duties, and the fact that he was dodging a few to be here with her right now. But oh, he felt that it was worth it for a moment.
His breath caught in his throat as he heard shaky words spill from her lips, that she needed him. Every muscle seemed to tense and freeze, as if with trepidation or expectation. Mind was drawn back to that day so long ago in the gardens of Kiephis, where he had felt just like this, waiting to here if she was pleased with the news of their future engagement. And it was the next whispered words that he had been waiting, yearning to hear, even though he hadn't known it. They rippled through his soul like a cool spring, rejuvenating him, and the reiteration of them turned spring to fountain as his eyes slid closed and he pulled her even closer against him, nuzzling her shoulder.
"I love you too," the Sage murmured back, a strength to his voice that belied quiet tone. With a regretful sigh the stallion drew back a step, ending the embrace but now able to fully look upon the beautiful mare before him, standing there in her new mobility cart. It didn't matter, none of it mattered any more and he was going to do things right this time. They were older, hopefully wiser and more sure, and with everything so uncertain...he wasn't going to second things any longer.
"You know what this means, don't you?" Rycaron inquired, quirking a brow with an actual trace of humor in his voice, and still using the contracted speech few ever heard from the lips of this oh so proper stallion. Oh, he hadn't felt this uplifted in quite some time, not since he'd been in Sedo in the company of young Pearl and Malik. "We're actually going to get married this time. If you will do me the honor?" This time he dipped his head into a formal bow, a hopeful expression appearing on features as he awaited her response, hopeful but not fearful this time. No, he thought he had no reason to doubt or worry about her response any longer.

His words so sweet and tender, she could feel the emotion in them as he said back the words. Those three precious words she held so dear to her heart, he said them back and she swore she felt alive, her sense awakened. With his tight embrace she took in every second of it, remembering they were the lucky ones, they were the blessed ones, they were still here, they had more days to come if the gods would have them stay here on this mortal world. Still as he pulled out form the embrace, her body already missing the heat and the connection that broke free, but they both had images to hold outside within the public's eye. Too much could be worrisome, too much could make whispering be had, but they of course were the lucky ones and things for once seemed to fall right in place for them.
Corrine relaxed more in her cart lighting a leg lightly to ease some of the weight more on the cart, though she looked at Ry as he brought up a question. She could feel the joyful humor in his voice, and she found herself smirking and chuckling though she did not know where exactly he was going with his words. "Well you must tell me then." she laughed a bit, oh gods it felt good to laugh and smile, to feel such emotions as this was perhaps long overdue. Though the next words, for moment shocked the Grand Cleric, her eyes widen, but there was nothing but a hige smile on her face, as she watched him bow, lets his words flow on repeat within her mind. This time they were going to get this right, this time, they wont let it all slip away as they had before. Laughter sprang from her throat, curls bouncing along with her. "After so long, how could I ever in my wildest dreams say no." she smiled. Tears of happiness falling from her eyes. "Of course, I'll have you! We'll get it right this time around." she smiled.
Maybe it was a bit bold of her, perhaps they had shared to much sacred moments here but, how else was she supposed to express such emotions. She moved closer to Rycaron, Taking in this stallion. So much has changed, they no longer were two young ones within the garden, but older adults, wiser with more sense this time.Eyes took him in, he's older, more world spent then herself, but still she could see that young stallion from so long ago before her and it made her smile all the more. Oh they may have missed out on so much if they had gotten right the first time, but they could make up for lost time. Moving closer she kissed him gently rubbing her cheek to his for a brief moment. Not wanting to push the limitations. There still was rules, there was still guidelines to follow. But this once they could forget that, for once it was just them.

It did his heart and soul so much good to see Corrine smile, to hear her wonderful laugh ringing in his ears. Oh, to keep such moments for forever. An echoing smile appeared on the stallion's own lips, large and utterly sincere as she affirmed his hopes--that she couldn't ever think of even saying no to such a proposal. "Do you have any idea how happy it makes me to hear that?" Rycaron murmured, the fins along his cheeks flaring with the brilliant smile that flickered across his features, before they settled into something less exuberant, though still showing far more emotion that was customary for the Sage.
"And yet, it seems I have made you cry after all," the stallion commented, lips quirking into a rare grin as he used a touch of aqua teke to brush the tears from her cheeks, even as she moved closer to him. He sighed gently, the expulsion of air laden with feelings of happiness, but also regret that the intimate touch was gone so soon. And yet, it was all they could have at this moment. Such displays weren't seemly in the open air or public's view, and he already knew the gossip was going to get around. Such was the way of life within the city.
And yet, he couldn't bare to part from her company just yet.
"I was so wrapped up in seeing you and my emotions, I didn't even get the chance to ask how you have fared since I've been gone in Sedo. What adventures have you been up to? I have heard so many tales since I have been back, and I have no idea which are true or just greatly embellished," Rycaron commented, tilting his head slightly as he shifted to stand side by side with the beautiful mare, their shoulders brushing. "That is, if I can keep monopolizing your time for a little while longer."

Corrine Cleric of Starfall SpringIm a series of small victories and large defeats and I am as amazed as any other that I have gotten from there to here Oh how long it had been to feel such at ease as this, in his presence always brought her tranquility. It reminded her of those time so long ago, they were just kids with no worries. Still even know as she looks to him, to Rycaron. A smile grew brighter and brighter on her lips, surely leaving her cheeks to ache from it. "Happy tears." she mused to him chuckling a bit at the touch of him. How long had she denied herself happiness such as this? How long had she believed she deserved to suffer? To put others before her greatly and for once, now, she is putting herself first.
If someone would have asked her, but minutes before that Rycaron would ever wish to have her, she'd laugh and shrug it off. At once it was simple dreams of a young mare, when time and gods separated them, they brought them together once more. Corrine sighed deeply closing her eyes taking in this moment, they deserved did they not? A second a moment for themselves? Surely after everything they could be granted this.
Though the question made her stiffen a bit. "A lot has happened while we had seen each other last. Held hostage, became a grand cleric, so much. Good and bad." Corrine shook her head lightly, allowing her long curly locks to bounce from the movement. "But I'm alright as are the others well as much as they can. No need to fret over my time, they can manage a bit more without me." she chuckled a bit. It was not as if she had paid her dues to heal and help, working from dawn till dusk. "How about yourself? I heard so much going on outside of Talori. Chaos seems to be all around us anymore." A light defeated sigh escaped her lips, what madness had their lives taken hold off? Corrine prayed to the wave mother that this was the last of chaos, that Talori could heal together and be better then before.

It eased his heart and the tension that always seemed to be carried within his heart and frame to see the mare relax a little, to be at ease with him and enjoy a moment of tranquility. Oh, if they could only manage to make many more of such moments in the future... Attention snapped back at Corrine's words though, shock appearing on his face, as as well as concern for her.
"You were taken hostage!?" The Sage was aghast at the notion, but he was exactly surprised. If she'd made Grand Cleric and had been within the walls, well he certainly wouldn't have put it past the Flight to do something like this. Those cruel sinners would do anything to further their cause, but it should all be behind them now. The Flight was broken, evicted from their borders and imprisoned. While Hawkeye may be dead...at least everyone else left could grieve, heal, and rebuild.
They all desperately needed it.
"I'm just...glad you are alright. I couldn't bare it if something were to happen to you as well," Rycaron murmured, dropping his voice before it broke toward the end. Oh Wave Mother, he really needed to get a hold of himself. He refused to show such sentiment and weakness in public. None could see him break down under the weight of emotion and grief he carried. So instead, he fixated aqua gaze upon the hippocampus beside him, and let her fill his thoughts instead. Truly, it was an easy way to banish the sadness.
"It truly is. But I hope with this treaty the chaos will settle down. It wasn't exactly what he hoped would happen, but we should be fine moving forward. Sedo was as different from here as Eithne was all those years ago, and I'm simply grateful to be home again, away from the desert. But this war...well, we shall see. I would rather focus on the present for the moment. Or at least...on you," Rycaron added, casting a charming smile to his beloved companion. It was silly, maybe, but it was true nonetheless. He didn't want to focus on the present that was dealing with the funeral arrangements, what to say to the public, working out more quirks of the treaty, and beginning to help with their preparations for their part in the war to come. No, he'd much rather just focus on Corrine.
