The water was cold, dark, and quiet. The moon could be seen glistening off its soft waves, stars twinkling in its backdrop. It was a relatively quiet night, as most had slipped off to bed, ready to rest off the day of hard work. For Menoetius, his day of work had just begun. He slipped into the waves of the ocean, the cold water rippling over his sleek coat and thick muscles as a fish-like tail grew in place of his hind end.
Menoetius was a guardian, patrolling the waters around Kiephis during the night. He had taken to these late shifts, as they provided ample time during the day for him to spend time with his daughters. Was he tired? Yes, but nothing could fix that now. His heart was still heavy due to the death of his son and the murder of the emperor, both of which happened only in the past few months.
However, the stallion could admit that it felt good to be back to work again. Back to as "normal" as it would be now, with the Seroran alliance and the awaiting of his nation's new leader. No, his world would return to the normal that he knew, but this was as close as he was going to get.
For now, his family was safe, and that was all he could ask for.
He paused in the water, his tail slowly treading water as he stared below at the underwater city of Kiephis. His gaze traced the buildings, the caves, the air pockets that allowed those without fins to visit. He couldnt help but feel sad, as his home seemed empty, robbed of the lives that had been lost in the fight against the Flight.
His brow narrowed as he let out a sigh, touching the glaive at his side with a soft golden glow of his teke. The weapon was a subtle reminder that they were in charge now, and Talori would be safe once more.. no matter what it took.

Vidya screamed her rage at the mountain and leapt as the ice started to give way beneath her hooves. Kaia's children had to be destroyed and she was going to be the instrument of Ignacio's destruction and she was going to shatter the stone beneath her hooves – she was falling. She hadn't landed. She hit the ground with a shuddering crash as everything around her went black.
Vidya's eyes flashed open. Her heart was pounding and she was still falling, though much slower – wait. Still falling? Had she been falling? Where had she been? Why was her heart pounding? Where was she?
Everything around her was black, extending into an endless abyss surrounding her. Something about her felt strange, strange and unnatural. Or was it? What was unnatural? She clung to the few things she could think of as she tried to examine her surroundings. Her name was Vidya. She was a kirin, whatever that was. Ignacio was her god, whoever he was. She knew these things with perfect clarity and without needing to understand why she knew them. They were almost comforting. Or, they would have been if she hadn't suddenly realized why she was falling so slowly. She was underwater.
Something about her felt strange, but she couldn't quite place what it was. With a quick flick of her tail – her tail? Why did that seem so odd? Everything felt so odd. She felt a panic rising up inside her but forced it down. Now was no time for that. No time at all.
Nearby was a change in the darkness. She swam towards it, grateful for something to give her direction. Were they... houses? Yes, that was what they had to be. Houses. Of course. What else – her mind was spiraling as if she were spinning, which she suddenly realized she was, somehow. Her tail didn't seem to be acting as it should, not at all.
She steadied herself and set off towards the lights again, realizing that they were much closer than she'd thought a few seconds before. Her eyes seemed to be adjusting to this strange place.
Movement in the water ahead startled her and in a second she realized three things. One, that was a horse in front of her, a stranger. Two, she should not be able to live underwater. Three, her tail felt wrong because it was a fishes' tail, and something about that was deeply, profoundly incorrect. Her heart rate shot up and no amount of breathing through the alien gills she somehow had could calm her. Everything started to fade to black again, and she nearly welcomed it.

It was then that a bright flash of light, only lasting but a moment, caught the stallion's attention. He squinted against the darkness of the water, noticing movement that seemed to have appeared out of no where. Quietly, he mused to himself, the last time that had happened, he had been face to face with a kirin. He remembered the bright light and the literal shock she had given him.. huffing softly to himself, he took to investigate. What were the chances that would happen again?
High.
The chances were high.
As he approached, he noticed the shimmering scales upon the stranger's back and face. At first, he thought she was just another hippocampus; she had the fins to prove it. However, further investigation showed that this mare had.. antlers? He watched as she struggled in the water, spinning like a newborn trying to test their fins. Confusion washed over him. This was a creature unlike he had ever seen. A kirin and a hippocampus in one?
He remembered how his weapon had startled the last one, so he kept it at his side. Slowly, he made his way toward the kirin, only to find her gills pumping quickly against the water and her eyes rolling. She was panicking.
The guardian's instincts kicked into gear and he swam toward the stranger, sweeping her up and dragging her toward the closest cave. An air pocket was settled deep within its rocky walls, giving them plenty of room to move and, more importantly, breathe.
Water dripped from his coat as he pulled himself and the hybrid from the water and only to the rocky cave floor. His hooves echoed within the walls as he dragged the mare after him, letting her lay on the ground as soon as they were free from the ocean's grasp.
His nostrils flared as he sucked in dusty air. These underwater caves didnt exactly get fresh air, but it was as fresh as they were going to get while under the ocean's surface.
Turning back to the mare, his gaze settled on her with a narrowed brow. "Are you okay?" He wanted answers, but he didnt want to startle her. Second damn kirin.. thing within a week.. Cascade, why me. He thought to himself bitterly.
