Gemstone and Yoru ✦ A Private Roleplay ✦
The location of the roleplay is in Nariah. G E M S T O N E ✦ Breim | Uncut ✦
"A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials." ~Lucius Annaeus Seneca ✦ When Gemstone had received a letter that very clearly was from the Royal house, it took everything she had to keep from bouncing around her room. Squealing with delight at the very notion Yoru had written back to her, the child settled down on her bed without even looking at the cover. Her brilliant emerald teke very gently peeled away the Royal seal, unwilling to allow any tears to mar the beautiful envelope. High quality parchment was folded within and that, too, was slowly slid out.
Unfolding the letter, her green eyes glittering with anticipation, she couldn't wait to read Yoru’s writing.
Except, it wasn’t her friends writing at all.
A foreign writing was scrawled down the length of the page, the script easily able to be read but still highly dignified that would suggest a caretaker had written her instead. Feeling a jolt in her heart, the worst case scenario ran through her mind.
She was being forbidden from seeing him. A commoner, like herself, was tainting his royal blood.
Feeling her chest tighten, she forced herself to actually read what was written instead of jumping to some ridiculous conclusions. While the scenario she worried about did not come to pass, thank Lord Argus, but something almost just as bad had happened.
Yoru was attacked.
While her dearest friend did not sustain any physical injuries, there would need to be gentle care taken on his mental health. The girl was already very well aware of his insecurity, though unsure what initially caused it but that never mattered. What mattered was that her best friend was in need of help, and she was being summoned to do just that.
Hardly a thought went through her head when she was bolting out of the room and seeking her Grandmother out. Luckily, the old donkey was cleaning the lobby tables, and there were only a few horses there relaxing and chatting among themselves. This was the best time she could have hoped for.
Upon seeing the distressed look on the child’s face, Alba had ushered her granddaughter into the back room to discuss what was ailing the filly. Upon reading the letter, she knew well Gemstone wouldn’t be helpful around the Inn at all until her friend was feeling better. The girl was always very concerned for what friends she had. She didn’t want to impose upon the child what exactly this could possibly mean for Breim and even the settlement that resided within Breim’s borders, as that was a more adult matter.
With a bit of concerned thought, the albino donkey allowed Gemstone to go by herself. Breim was safe, what with the Guards stationed around the tunnels and keeping wanderers out of the more dangerous cave systems. Although, this would be Gemstones first time traveling completely on her own. She was still just a child, but this was important for the girl, as well as Breim as a whole. Perhaps Gemstone’s actions could give her a leg up as she aged.
The duo discussed how to get to Nariah from Sterling, mostly to make sure that the girl remembered how to get there herself. Then there was going over the emergency actions that needed to be taken in the event of a cave in, though that was incredibly rare. Some provisions were set aside, just in case the girl got hungry along the way.
Alba had to keep herself from being emotional, so she set to praying.
Argus was asked to keep his eyes upon the filly, Alya was asked to protect her, and Kaia to keep the earth at bay while the child traveled.
After a quick bath, Gemstone set off on her way with her grandmothers saddlebags and her cloak to keep her warm.
Gemstone was unsure how long it took her to get to Nariah, but it was definitely late. She considered herself lucky to have been following a couple of groups that were headed there. No one actually said anything about a child traveling by herself, but if they had, she would have said she was visiting a friend in need.
Nariah glittered as she entered the major city, the gemstones hanging from the ceiling, glowing their usual unearthly light. As she stood in the center, taking in the city, she had to decide where exactly she was going. The writer of the letter, someone named Nuriko, had written directions to his house. She had only ever been to Doev’s house, despite never meeting the stallion before. Now, which way was she supposed to go.
Groaning to herself, the girl turned around and around until she paused to look at the letter again. After a few more glances around, something clicked and she breathed a sigh of relief. Thanking Argus, the girl sprinted off in the direction her recognition prompted.
Trying to be more careful with her hooves, the girl made sure not to run into anyone (remembering how she clumsily met Yoru the first time…), and apologized a few times to those who lingered in the city streets that happened to get in her way. She trotted quickly, wanting to get there as fast as she could.
Nuriko’s house was located, and, feeling quite a bit sheepish at arriving so late at night, the girl tentatively walked up to the door. What if she wasn’t expected yet? What if they weren’t ready for her yet? Anxiety crawled into her mind as she paced in front of the door.
Finally, the girl just stopped and knocked, hoping for the best.
Yoru, I’m here.

Nuriko watched the young colt with disdain. Doev would owe him big time for this. Skadi was busy with planning the wedding and thus the char of the child was thrust onto him. The king's guide heaved out a hard breath, opening the door to the guest room without so much as knocking. Yoru was curled into a ball in the corner, hidden under all the blankets the roan unicorn had given him. Nuriko was not at all a maternal person and thus he merely plucked the blankets from the young royals body and placed them back on the bed. "Blankets are not to leave the bed." He corrected, shooting the child a sharp look.
Yoru flinched and dropped his head more, staring at the ground. Doev coddled this child too much. He needed to grow up. A small hoof stamp and he swished his tail. "This way. Without looking back the unicorn lead the Pegasus out into the kitchen and started to put together some oatmeal. "I sent a letter to your friend gemstone. She should be here today. I have matters to attend to today but the guards can take you anywhere you want to go. I would suggest getting out of the house." He watched the colt merely nod and fought back from rolling his eyes. Such a pathetic creature... Once he was dressed the unicorn said his meager goodbye and headed out.
A guard stepped into the house and stood by the door, keeping an eye on the colt. Yoru moved towards the fireplace and pulled down one of the books, flickering quietly through it but not really reading. He lost himself to his mind, going numb the majority of the time. Though as the knock sounded on the door, his ears folded back and a blanket was pulled over his form. The guard opened the door and smiled gently down at the striped filly. "He's just under the blanket there. I will step outside and let you two have some time together. Come get me if you need me."
Yoru sniffled back a small sob as the door closed, blanket pulling away enough to look at Gemstone before the tears burst forth and he broke, sobbing hard as he felt her press into him.

"A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials." ~Lucius Annaeus Seneca ✦ The girl didn’t have to wait long, before the door opened and she stared up at a Guard who she assumed was Nuriko. Who was she to judge?
She had looked up to the guard, albeit sheepishly, before her eyes went to the blanket at the comment regarding where Yoru was. All sense of listening to the Guard had gone, and she couldn’t even recall what he even said. Green eyes focused on the blanket, and the door had closed behind her as the guard stepped out. The dual-colored eyes of her friend appeared from the pulled away blanket...and she could see the tears that instantaneously filled them.
She didn’t even take the time to take off her cloak, but the saddlebags were unceremoniously dropped by the door as she darted across the room to her friend.
Gemstone was rarely angry.
There were a few times in her life where she could say she was legitimately angry about something. But they couldn’t compare to what she was feeling right now.
When she had broken something, she was angry with herself.
When she was bullied, she was angry at the bully.
When she was alone, she was angry that her parents died.
But now?
Yoru was attacked. Nuriko hadn’t given the specifics, for good reason as Gemstone was just a child herself. She could learn what happened now, a burning desire swelling up inside of her to find whomever had done this and teach them a lesson.
Irrational, yes, but that’s Gemstone for you.
She had pressed herself against him, against his good side anyway, and nuzzled the side of his neck gently.
“It’s okay, Yoru, I’m here. No one is going to hurt you anymore.” The anger melted away into guilt. Hadn’t she promised herself that she would protect him? What a damn good job she was doing…
And then, it hit her.
All these years, she was obsessed with the gems and crystals that littered the underground tunnels of Sirith. She was always artsy. She had thought that her destiny was becoming a Maker.
But now?
Destiny had a funny way of really showing itself. It was so obvious now.
Yoru was her destiny. To protect him, to keep him safe.
The Guard outside, Nuriko... perhaps she could talk to him about becoming a Guard, the Help? She could work on getting stronger, she could prove that she could protect her best friend.
But what would her grandmother think? Sterling, only a day’s journey or so, was still quite a walk from Nariah. If she did become part of The Help, she couldn’t just up and visit her grandmother every day. She doubted she would be able to visit much at all. It hurt to think about, leaving her grandmother alone to work the Inn, but she couldn’t ignore her calling, and she knew her grandmother would feel the same way.
Swallowing, feeling Yoru shaking against her, she spoke to him softly.
“My grandmother isn’t expecting me back home for a while, so I can stay as long as you need me to.” She tried to smile, but knew that she couldn’t expect him to smile back at her. She had to be delicate.
“Can you tell me what happened? It’s okay if you don’t want to. I don’t want you to get more upset, okay?” using her teke, she pulled the blanket over them both. Even though there weren’t prying eyes, she felt that he would feel better encased regardless.

Tears fell like rivers, coating his face and dripping onto the ground. But she was here. Really here. As her warmth covered him, pressing against his form, the small colt pressed back, seeking as much if not more comfort from her then she was from him. It was so difficult but she was here and that was all that mattered.
Small dished head pressed, nearly hid, against her neck and chest, good wing wrapping around her. Sobs tore from his throat, finally feeling safe enough to let out the emotion he had been caging all this time. His time form rocked with the emotion flowing from him, using her presence to shield himself. Gratitude was cradled in his heart as she moved the blankets over them, his wing pulling back to hang limply at his side. A knee rose, wiping frantically at the tears dripping off his nose and cheeks.
"I'm just- Glad y-you're here..." He stammered, trying to catch his breath, trying to calm down. She didn't need him to be this emotional, after all she wasn't running away any time soon. Taking a couple bigger draws of air he finally calmed just enough to talk properly.
"Are you sure you want to know...?" The dark prince asked softly, pressing his face back into his neck and chest. She was so warm, so comforting... A couple more long draws of air and he felt ready.
Ready to finally talk.
While he was sure Winry had given the king's guide the whole run down it was essential that the young prince also be able to speak of what happened. And so far he had not. Head shook slightly, long bangs piling against the filly before he drew back. "It happened so fast... Doev assured me that... That things wouldn't go wrong." Mouth became dry and tongue worked over the fleshy part of the colts mouth to re-moisten it. "We got to the settlement but... Some horses came charging in with injuries. I-... I took off, like an idiot." Head shook hard, large hoof stomping onto the ground. "He grabbed my harness and then there was a knife against my throat." Tears fell again.
So scared..." His voice cracked, the last words barely a whisper as more cries crawled from his throat.

"A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials." ~Lucius Annaeus Seneca ✦ The youth kept herself still, offering physical as well as mental and emotional support to her friend. She let him cry himself out, wondering if he had been hiding how he felt since he was brought back to the palace. It really must be rough, being a royal. Was he really expected to just be strong and brush off things that happened to him? It annoyed her, but she wouldn’t say as much, especially now. That was one less thing she needed him to worry about right now.
She cared not for any stray tears that might have dripped on her coat, nor did she mind his shaking head under her neck. It felt good to be there for him, though she wished she could magic away his pain. She thought about the Blessings Argus could give, particularly memory Manipulation. While she believed it was wrong to alter the memories of another, she figured this would be the best time to use such a blessing. If only she had such a blessing.
Suppressing a sigh, Gemstone perked her ears up as he pulled his head to his chest. She didn’t know exactly what Yoru had been sent off to do, and she knew very little about the settlement that resided within Sirith. But she put two and two together, her friend had obviously gone to the settlement for some reason. Judging on what she knew about her friend, he was very withdrawn. Doev was likely trying to get him out of his shell and sent him on this mission with the confidence that it would be alright. And in all reality, it most likely should have been. Gemstone was confident that Bremians were able to take care of their own, after all, they survived how long within these subterranean tunnels? Let’s see a Seroran or Aodhian do that!
“It sounds scary…” The girl admitted quietly. “It was your first time there, don’t blame yourself. I don’t know what I would have done if it were me instead of you.” Which was true. She likely would have been too distracted with life above ground to even be of help to anyone…
“You’re alright now, that’s all that matters. That horse will get theirs. You can count on Argus for that.” But it didn’t end there. “There’s nowhere they can hide from Argus’ eyes or even Alya’s for that matter! Every night he will have to hide from Alya’s moons, her stars. And there’s nowhere on Hireath where Kaia hasn’t touched. He will never escape the constant reminder that he held a child at knifepoint. He will live with that for the rest of his life.”
The striped girl nearly spat, the thought that someone would sink to such a low as to attack a child. And she didn’t say that to be condescending. The both of them were still children, there was no way around it.
“They kept you safe, Yoru...I know it. The Gods were watching. They brought you back safely.” She mustered a smile. “You don’t need to be scared anymore. I’d like to see him try it again.” The girl pulled away and moved to stand in front of her friend.
“I’ll run circles around him! When I get my Devil Bird, they’d run in fear because Argus will be staring right at them! I can see the looks of fear on their face as they look into the third eye. They’ll be begging for mercy!” She reared up a bit for effect, pawing the air with her striped legs. When she settled down again, her chest heaving from excitement, she flashed him a knowing grin.
“I’ll protect you, Yoru. I decided I’m gonna talk to Nuriko and see if he can apprentice me to become a Guard just like him!” She glanced over her shoulder to the door, still under the impression the Guard was Nuriko…
“And then I can become part of The Help. And I can stay here and protect you. Forever.” it just all slipped out so quickly, but the passion was there. She was settling on her life choice. This mattered so much to her...he mattered so much to her. And she was sure he always would.

He was so tired. But the tears did not end. Even as Gemstone spoke to him and about how she would have felt the tears only continued to fall. How did one pick themselves up from this? He had spent so long trying to act numb, kept to himself. Doev was still gone, still away and so was his healer Iyasu. Nuriko had been doing his best to get the young colt out and about but each day felt like he was slogging through mud. Mud that never got easier.
But Gemstone kept talking. Eyes fell wide as her voice grew and so did her presence. Wing flared, blanket rustling to the ground as he was exposed once more. But it didn't matter. Gemstone was all he could focus on.
As her words filled the space, filled him, his little heart fluttered and eyes remained wide. As her sharp hooves found purchase back on the ground before him he stood and wrapped his neck around hers, wing settling over her in a tight hug. "Forever? Like, Forever forever?" He asked, feeling his voice crack as tears fell for a completely different reason. "You... You are so amazing Gemstone..." The young prince gasped out, a tiny happy laugh leaving him. Much of her words had been lost to his mind, but the ending... -...And I can stay here and protect you. Forever- Those where seared into his mind in a way he did not understand.
Slowly he pulled back from her, sitting down on the floor and looked down once more. "I... I can go to Sterling with you for a bit. If you'd like." Maybe then he could somehow repay her for all this. If she was truly dedicated to protecting him... Maybe he could actually be happy.

"A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials." ~Lucius Annaeus Seneca ✦ Gemstone was only slightly taken back by the hug, but mostly because she hadn’t expected it, or at least that quickly. But she really enjoyed it. His neck enveloping her own, his good wing folding over her. She smiled as he seemed to be perplexed at her earlier exclamation. She had meant it with her whole being. Other than her family, no one meant more to her than him. His safety was now her top priority.
The filly flushed at his comment about being amazing. She was just doing what was right, wasn’t she? Or was it something more? But the sound of his sudden laugh meant alot to her; it meant that she could draw out a smile through the sobs, it meant she could do something for him at that moment. She just hoped that wasn’t all she could do for him.
When he pulled back, she had almost frowned when he looked down at his hooves again. Was he still sad, or just sheepish? His next comment made her raise her brows. She wondered if he had been to Sterling before. She had told her Grandmother about her friend, but they hadn’t met, and she was sure that he had never been to The Starlight Rest. It was very tempting, but she wasn’t sure if he would be comfortable leaving the safety that was Nariah, his home.
“I don’t mind staying here, Yoru. I want to stay wherever you feel comfortable.” She smiled, her large ears perked towards him. “We could walk around the city if you’d like. Whatever you’d like to do. I’m here for you, Yoru.” She turned back over towards him, lifting the blanket back over them both as she settled next to him. “Or if you want to just stay here and relax, we can do that too.”

The small colt lifted his knee and rubbed at the wetness that was over his face. He wanted to stop crying, wanted to stop being so weak. But it was so hard. Swallowing hard blue and red eyes watched as the little filly moved and shifted the blankets around them. He pressed closer into her side, good wing rustling over her form to allow him to push closer to her. Yoru was clearly exhausted, and having his friend this close... It was making him feel safe, feel calm after days of being on edge, being scared constantly and unsure of his footing.
Her voice filled his ears and he rested the side of his cheek against her neck. "Anywhere were you are with me is fine." the dark young royal muttered sleepily under his breath. "The fire is nice but... Nuriko's home isn't my home..." He whispered.
It was then that the door slid open and the road unicorn pranced in, his robes slipping and shifting around his form. Keen calculating eyes took in the two young equines cuddled together in front of his fire and with a small sigh he tinted the fire back to its normal orange and red glow. The blue and green was gone, leaving a much more cosy feel to the place. "I take it you are Gemstone. They have seen us meet." A soft knocking sound echoed as he tapped his foot and barely bowed. "Would you both like something to drink or eat? Yoru, can you please eat more then a few small bites?" The colt shivered and looked down, nodding weakly as the unicorn vanished into the kitchen. The colt sighed softly and looked at the fire. "That's Nuriko..." A whisper left the young ones lips as he shifted slightly away from Gemstone, sitting up.

"A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials." ~Lucius Annaeus Seneca ✦ Gemstone began to feel some real envy at her best friend having wings; you can really cuddle someone in a way other equines couldn’t. It was a good kind of envy. The girl stayed silent, listening to him slowly calm down, his head against her neck. She felt bad that he was so exhausted from the trials he had faced. She wouldn’t even know what to do in his situation.
But then he spoke, and she smiled at his reply. Anywhere together would be fine, it wouldn’t matter. She did not move, opting that it was probably for the best that they stay indoors while he recuperated. However, at the mention of Nuriko’s home not being his did pose a problem. Before she could remark about it, the door slid open.
Nuriko was beautiful, and for a moment, Gemstone was inclined to believe he was a she, with those sparkling horns of his. But she bit her tongue, especially at his sigh when he looked at them. Her ears folded back some and then snapped against her head when the fire changed colors. This only lasted a moment, because she was gawking at the now warm glow of the fire around them. Interesting. And before she knew it, the unicorn was offering her a Bremian greeting. Although it would probably be considered rude, she didn’t want to leave Yoru’s side so soon. Instead, she did what she could while sitting beside her friend.
“They have seen us meet.” She smiled, clapping her hoof gently against the ground as she bowed her head down low. The lack of a bow was not lost on her, but she chalked it up to him being exhausted as well. At his next comment, she glanced to Yoru at the nagging comment that came from the unicorns lips. Hm…
And yet again, before the girl could utter a response, the unicorn had disappeared into the kitchen. Ears twitching, she looked back at her friend when he whispered. Oh...OH. Oh how embarrassing, the girl through to herself. Thank Argus she didn’t go barging outside and start bothering the Guard about being Nuriko and asking him to train her. What a disaster that would have been. But her chance came, and she was going to jump on it.
“You stay here, Yoru. I need to talk to him. I’ll be right back I promise.” She leaned over and gave her friend a bump on the cheek with her nose before rising gingerly from his side. Her heart started pounding in her chest. What if Nuriko rejected her request? No. She would be determined and he wouldn’t be able to talk her out of it, she was sure. Taking a deep breath, the zonkey trotted softly into the kitchen.
Mustering every ounce of politeness she had learned in the thirteen years of her life, she put a smile on her face as she came to a halt just inside the kitchen entrance.
“Excuse me, Nuriko?” She kept her gaze elsewhere as per tradition, “I would like to ask you a very important question, if it’s not too much of a bother for you, sir?”

Yoru blinked, about to call after the filly but she was around the corner before he even had a chance. Ears pinned back against his skull, unsure what was about to happen. He could only hope Gemstone did not upset the unicorn. He shuffled a bit more under the blankets and looked towards the fire.
Nuriko was just opening the cupboards to pull out some picked vegetables when the young Zhorse came in. He regarded her quietly, picking up a jar with ease and then setting it down on the counter with the soft teal Teke. Body turned slowly, his head risen high as he looked her over with calculating eyes. He averted his gaze back to the jar and opened the lid with a single tug of his teke. "Of course Gemstone. What may your question be?" Bowls and cutlery where pulled from the cupboards, setting them down upon the smooth stone surface. The pickled items tumbled forth, the juices strained into one bowl as he dumped the actual vegetables into another. Some rice was gather from the steamer and placed in a bigger bowl. Yet another cupboard was opened and soy sauce along with a few other sauces where poured into much smaller dishes. "If you don't mind Gemstone, can you grab a dish or two?" He side stepped a bit to give her room to make a choice on what to bring into the front room.
