The downpour of rain made the road to Skeldr Town rather tedious. On a path where Chekilla often breezed by with little effort, she found herself straining through the slippery mud that bogged down the wagon she pulled, and for a couple of times she had been forced to stop and push the wagon out of some mucky pothole. It was times like these that Chekilla chided herself for being such a pisspoor navigator and reader of the weather; she could have easily avoided this problem if she had just asked the farmers at home what the day would feel like to them, especially her father, who knew almost half as much as a weather witch would. He could look at a small fluffy cloud and know if it foretold a terrible storm or a particularly hot sunny day. He could sense upcoming snow days like it was a second nature for him and it was that second nature that kept food on the table as his wife struggled to find an alternative job. It was impressive, but Chekilla never bothered with that weather-learning business.
Now she wished she had.
Crrreaaaak...
The wagon rocked on its wheels and Chekilla felt it, but she didn't have enough time to stop and steady it as what happened next happened without warning. Suddenly the ground was flipped from under her hooves and the wind and rain whistled pass her ears as she felt herself carried and thrown to her side. The rain momentarily drowned out by the loud booming crash of wood striking the ground. Then all was quiet, and Chekilla was given time to think at last.
Did the wagon just fall over? Judging from the zonkey's disorienting position, it did. Maybe the potholes finally go her.
Gagging in the mud, rainwater, and bits of snow, Chekilla hastily undid the harness buckles with her telekiness and dragged herself out carefully.
The ice-slick portion of the road was what caused the wagon to fall into a rather ditch. Chekilla was lucking that the dull ache on her side was all that she got from it; she could have bumped her head on a rock, or snapped her neck from the fall. It was a miracle she even survived that weird crash with just a hurting flank.
Chekilla shook her head and looked down at the slush of mud and snow, whispering, "Thank you, Kaia."
Even in times of disaster, the Earth Mother was keeping a watchful eye on her child. Though in the case of Cascade, well...maybe she should take it easy with the rain. And now, getting the wagon out of the mud. The zonkey huffed as she pushed herself against the wagon as hard as she could, but to no avail. The wagon merely slid slightly; the zonkey didn't have enough strength to lift it in this position. It wasn't as if she could crawl under the wagon and do it either.
Ugh, it would be a pain in the ass if she had to trek her way up to Skeldr Town to get some help. Even worse, she'd be leaving her stuff unattended, which would be great for robbers and (Chekilla shuddered) pygmy griffins.
What a dilemma, the merchant thought as she circled the cart and waited by the road's edge, hoping someone would take pity on her troubles.Post #1
