WC: 199 | Post #1Gianna went out from her cabin and huffed her breath. She watched as it faded away in the cold air and readied herself for the coming task. Snow had covered the roads and pathways the farmers were used to taking into town. It was a tad unusual to see this much snow around here, so she joined a group of other farmers to help clear the roads.
She ambled out to the shed and grabbed a hefty shovel. Pulling her furs closer to her, she shuffled down her driveway and joined her neighbors on the road. As she set off down farther where there were less shovelers, she looked up at the sky and smiled as a snowflake fell all alone on her muzzle. She loved these wintery days. It meant less work outside and more inside keeping warm.
Finally she found a good spot and slung her shovel down. She didn't know anyone that well in the area since she moved away from home. So she didn't quite know if she was trespassing or breaking social norms. It made her uneasy, but she tried to focus on the work at hand and enjoy the quiet scenery around her. ooc: So sorry it's so short! Let me know if it's not quite enough to reply too!

Gwen Farmer ---
Gwen blinked against the white that covered the land. Her breath formed small clouds of condense and she shivered even under her thick musk-ox pelt. When she and her family had woken up to see the snow covered roads she had almost felt relieved. The Winter brought little work for a farmer, but Gwen wasn’t one to sit inside all day, lounging about.
Now she could make herself useful. Working up a sweat as she cleared away the snow with an old, bend shovel. Her oldest brother, Meuric, had started around their big farm and the barn. So Gwen had taken on the trail that led from their home to the more common road.
The white mare had kept her eyes down as she progressed, moving the snow to the side of the road. When something moved in the corner of her eye she looked up quickly. Close to the end of her trail was a young mare, shovelling snow as well. Gwen froze, unprepared for an encounter with a stranger.
The shy mare started at the brown and white Clydesdale, noticing her wavy chocolate hair and the grey fins on her back and sides. A hippocampus. This spiked Gwen’s curiosity. She had never met a hippocampus before… maybe she could muster up the courage to say hello.

WC: 178 | Post #2Gianna shoveled her way into bliss, not giving a second thought to her surroundings, not even seeing the very pale white mare at the end of her drive way. Before she could stop herself, Gianna bumbled into the mare.
"Oh! Whoops!" She gave a loud jolly sort of laugh, her own social anxiety dissipating fast. "You know you're coat is so white you barely stand out from the snow! Though I suppose that cloak of yours should have done the trick. I'm a little clumsy." Gianna had taken a little herbal remedy to prepare her for the strain on her muscles. And apparently it had kicked in finally. She was much more willing to meet new strangers this way. "Sorry I'm Gianna. Probably should have introduced myself first." She gave the mare a smile and hoped she wasn't coming on too strong.
"I hope you don't mind me helping out a bit near your road?" She asked, her own shyness seeping in through the cracks. Oh wasn't it just impossible to make new friends without racking your nerves?!

Gwen Farmer ---
Gwen had been concentrating on how to greet the hippocampus, when she suddenly noticed the mare was advancing quickly. She was too shy to call out and before she could step out of the way they had bumped into each other. Gwen stepped back, ready to apologize, but she stopped as she saw the pretty mare laugh.
The bay sabino began to speak and Gwen concentrated on catching every word. Her deaf ears automatically, but uselessly, perking up. The hippocampus was commenting on her white coat, something Gwen was very self-conscious about, but the stranger made no mean remarks. She seemed like a relaxed horse and now that they were standing so close, Gwen picked up a herbal scent. She wasn’t very familiar with it, but she could identify it as marijuana. Did the hippocampus smoke herself? Or had someone near her smoked some?
Suddenly the stranger introduced herself, catching Gwen of guard as she tried to read the unfamiliar name. It looked like Diana, but Gwen wasn’t sure this was right and she was too shy to ask. The Clydesdale smiled before she spoke once more and Gwen shook her head before she answered softly. “Not at all, all the help is welcome.” She assured the mare, hoping her voice didn’t sound weird. “My name is Gwen, I… I live back there.” She told, nodding to her farm. She was very nervous, keeping her head low while her eyes darted between the ground and ‘Diana’.

WC: 153 | Post #3Gianna could tell the small white mare was nervous beyond belief. She didn't know whether or not she could do anything to help with that. Gianna may be shy, but she desperately wanted friends. Moving from her family had left her almost completely alone. She never saw her brothers much anymore, especially Oliver, and she didn't have many friends as a filly to begin with.
So when the small mare introduced herself, Gianna felt a swell of pride in herself for putting herself out there. "It's nice to meet you Gwen!" She happily scooped up a massive amount of snow and swung it to the side, almost knocking over herself. "So you said you live just up the road? Are you by yourself?" The massive hippocampus still hadn't picked up that there was something a little different about Gwen. She just kept shoveling snow and tried her best to not be too intimidating.

Gwen Farmer ---
As Gwen nodded to her home she watched for her family, but there was no one in sight. The pretty Bay seemed friendly enough though. Gwen thought she saw something in those green eyes, a kind of hopefulness. It made her feel less nervous about being shy. The white mare even allowed herself a soft smile as she watched the energetic Hippocampus shovel an amount of snow that was almost too much, even for her.
“It is nice to meet you to… ehm… D… Diana?” Gwen carefully mumbled the name, making it sound more like an afterthought. A sudden surge of courage, combined with the friendliness of the stranger, had pulled the name from her lips. But the nervous mare started to doubt the action as soon as she said it.
Gwen swallowed hard as her heart jumped into a quickened pace. What if the name was wrong after all, what if she was offending this friendly mare? Gwen couldn’t stand the tension and looked away as she threw herself into vigorously shovelling the last few meters of snow from the driveway, not noticing the next question at all.
The white mare took a deep breath of cold Winter air. Maybe if she finished quickly she could run back inside and hide in her room forever, save and all alone… maybe a little too alone.

WC: 225 | Post #4Gianna’s ears perked up as the small, white mare mumbled the name ‘Diana’. Diana? Did I mumble again? Mother always said I talked too fast.
“It’s Gianna, actually! Sorry sometimes I talk too fast.” Gianna smiled, hoping she didn’t sound rude. That was no way to make friends. “But in all honesty, I think Diana’s beautiful. You can call me that if you like!”
But when the mare continued to focus on shoveling and not answer her other question, Gianna became confused. And a little hurt. Had she done something wrong? Gianna shook herself off, ridding herself of the darker thoughts. They both were nervous and shy, maybe Gwen just needed a break? Gianna could understand that.
The Clydesdale swished her tail and hoped the mare would respond. Gwen didn’t seem like the type to ignore her and be rude. Was there something else? Had she heard her? Gianna knew she could be pushing it. But she really liked Gwen so far. And she knew the two of them could become good friends. So she went for it.
With her teke, Gianna formed a soft snowball. A giant grin plastered on her face, she chucked it. It landed with a gentle thud on Gwen’s cloak. Gianna couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “Let’s have a game of this snow! Shoveling is boring, don’t you think?”

Gwen Farmer ---
Gwen felt something hit her cloak and she froze. She had lived in Onea all her life, she knew the feeling of a snowball hitting her. Startled and frightened, the shy mare looked up at the Hippocampus. She’d done it then, she’d made the bay mare angry. ‘Diana’ was laughing and Gwen took a step back, imagining some kind of evil cackle. That wasn’t right though, as the mare spoke Gwen observed. She wasn’t angry, she was still friendly, playful apparently.
Gwen felt herself relax, soundlessly scolding herself for being so insecure. As the Hippocampus waited for an answer Gwen started to realize she needed to take care of the risk of more miscommunication rather sooner than later.
For years, Gwen had felt ashamed of being deaf, trying hard to hide it. Though, after she had a good talk with her family about it, she had started to accept it. It was no longer a weakness, but it was still something she’d rather not admit if she didn’t have to. So her gut twisted with nerves as she took a deep breath and laid her ‘secret’ bare. D… Diana? I think I should tell you something first, I’m… I’m deaf… completely.’ Gwen tried to keep her voice even and clear. She watched for a reaction and swallowed hard as her heart thumped in her throat.

WC: 217 | Post #5It seemed like the snowball had done the trick. The mare turned around and for a split second Gianna saw fear. Maybe she shouldn't have thrown it. But when she saw that Gianna was just trying to lighten the mood, Gwen relaxed. Internally, Gianna wiped her brow. It was so much easier to befriend stallions than mares. But she thought she was doing alright for her first time!
Then Gwen mentioned something completely out of left field. Gianna perked her ears in the white mare's direction and let that bit of information settle. Well that was why she had gotten Gianna's name wrong. And why it seemed like she was ignoring her before.
"Oh! I'm sorry! I had no idea!" Gianna bent her head and could feel warmth spreading to her cheeks. Gianna felt like a dunce for not noticing! "No wonder there was some confusion! Oh I must have been driving you crazy! Sorry, sometimes I miss things." Gianna let out a nervous laugh. "Well it's good to know. Now I'll make sure to not leave you in the dark. You talk so well though!" She gave her a small smile, still trying to understand how she could have missed that so easily. Hopefully with this new information the two of them could communicate even better.

Gwen Farmer ---
Gwen could see that her confession startled the mare. She didn’t understand why ‘Diana’ would apologise though, and the shy mare stumbled over her words as she tried to clarify. “Don’t be sorry, I didn’t mean to… I just thought… well…” Gwen took another deep breath. ”Thank you for the compliment, I try to practice my speech with my brother. I’ve been in situations before where horses wouldn’t know I was deaf and then I accidently ignored them so… to prevent that from happening I thought I should just tell you.”
The white mare felt awkward, mentally trying to reign in the sudden outburst of words. But it seemed that, now that her secret was known, something fell from her shoulders. She realized suddenly that the Hippocampus hadn’t been irritated or repulsed by her disability. In fact, the pretty bay was smiling again. She seemed to do that a lot. Gwen liked it.

WC: 168 | Post #6"Well I'm very glad you did tell me! Because it would be a shame to not get to know you! You know you're one the first friends I've made since moving out here. Not too many horses are keen on getting to know me." It was always interesting when suddenly Gianna opened up. She knew it wasn't always the best thing to be so personal with new horses, they usually didn't want that right away. But Gwen seemed different. And Gianna thought it would be alright.
She perked up at the mention of a brother. Gianna missed hers a lot. They were all busy forging their own lives and she hadn't seen much of them. Especially because she refused to go home. Her parents couldn't think she had given up. "Oh I have a few brothers myself! I'm the youngest. I would love to meet your brother one day, though." Gianna was a family horse. She always had been. Even though she denied herself wanting that simple life.

Gwen Farmer ---
Gwen watched the mare intently, her ears alert in an automatic response. She was surprised but secretly also grateful that Diana was opening up to her, sharing some insecurity. The white mare couldn’t believe the part where Diana said that ‘not too many horses were keen on getting to know her’.
To Gwen, the pretty bay seemed a very social and approachable horse. She had been kind and polite, why wouldn’t she have many friends? She didn’t come across as shy, at least not as shy as Gwen. The white mare felt herself become curious.
”Oh, I’m the youngest too!” Gwen said, happy to have found a similarity between herself and Diana. ”I actually have two older brothers. They’re busy with removing the snow around our house and barn right now.” As she said it Gwen realized she had stopped working herself, quickly glancing at the snow around her, they were almost finished.
Maybe they could take a break after clearing the path. Gwen wanted to invite Diana to her warm home, they could get some tea, they could talk some more. She could introduce her brothers if that made the bay mare happy. Gwen felt her nerves return as she fought to find the right words and her insecurity made her hesitate.
What if Diana didn’t want to have tea with her at all? What if she was just being polite? Oh no, maybe she just wanted to get her task done and go home? Gwen’s thoughts swirled and she flattened her ears as she looked at the ground. She took a deep breath as she scraped together some courage, glancing up.
”I could make us some tea when we’re finished… but it’s alright if you don’t want that! I mean, I’d understand if you’d rather go home to your family…” Gwen had to bite her tongue to stop herself from taking back the invitation. She hoped she wasn’t making this nice encounter completely awkward.
