Thrynn Stallion / Raider / War-Forged
Another shove aimed at his shoulder, another hoof stomping the dirt in frustration. Voices were raised in aggravation and displeasure all around the small clearing. Thrynn pinned his ears and got in the face of the Raider who seemed insistent on passing the time with a shoving match, fiery yellow eyes meeting steely grey ones.
"If you don't keep your flanks off of me we're going to have a problem."
"I'd say we already have one, Thrynn," the grey stallion hissed.
"Watch yourself, Beck, or we'll have something real to settle after all this shit is over with. Just settle down."
"Ohh, here come the little nurse maids now," he returned, landing a quick bite on Thrynn's shoulder when he turned to look at the small group of Medics entering the clearing.
Thrynn ground his teeth and reminded himself that getting into it with Beck would only give the Medics more wounds to pour over. Hira wanted them all in fighting shape, hence these ridiculous check-ups. Raiders didn't need every little wound tended too, as she should well know. If any of them needed a Medic, they'd go seek one out. "We shouldn't be coddled like this, it's embarrassing," he muttered.
"Mmm, but when the Medics look like that, I might be inclined to play the part of injured warrior," came the snickering remark as Beck stared wolfishly at one of the mares.
"She'd probably slip poison into your medicine the first chance she got," Thrynn retorted, still irritated.
"Oh yeah? Wanna bet on it? Your pretty peach ass doesn't stand a chance against this fine specimen. I'll bag a mare before you do or you owe me your next month's wages. Deal? Deal."
Thrynn knew it was a losing battle to even try to deny Beck, so he gave the grey bastard a curt nod as he sauntered off into the crowd.
The peach Raider's blood was still hot from Beck's egging and the annoyance of being rounded up like a bunch of helpless invalids, so his nerves were too busy to fail him as he approached one of the Medics. She was small, but her mane and tail were long and flowing, and her coat was so intricately patterned that she hardly had an issue making a statement in the bustling crowd. She was looking over a heavily scarred Raider, but none of his wounds were fresh so she sent the old stallion on his way. Now he was right upon her and she was looking up at him quizzically, maybe even with a bit of trepidation. Suddenly his bet seemed a whole lot less important. Thrynn cleared his throat, gearing up to say... something to the mare. He really should have spent less time looking at her and more time thinking up something witty.
"So... Do Medics think these check-ups are as useless as we do?" he asked, forcing himself to keep his eyes on her own and not let them wander as his nerves began failing. Yeah that's a winner, ask her if she thinks she's useless.

Nivinara Mare | Medic | War-Forged
Even before she entered the clearing with the other medics she could already tell trouble was brewing. However it was Raiders, she wasn't all that surprised honestly, especially when she walked in. A shoving match was going on between two stallions and another group off to the side was rough housing as well, while a few others were boisterously yelling at each other. The little mare sighed softly. Why must stallions always been so troublesome? She couldn't help but think, watching on of the older medics stomp over to the younger stallions and whip them into shape, while she stopped beside an older stallion and set her things down.
Nivinara smiled, amused at how easily the older mare did it and made a mental note to ask about it when they were done here. After all with all the patients she had to deal with recently she could use some advice. Though she wasn't too sure why they had to check on the Raider's, at least her personally. It was a monthly check up that needed to be performed, but this was her first time here. She supposed that they just needed the extra help this time around, and honestly she didn't blame them one bit. Not with this rowdy bunch of stallions.
The medic's attention quickly turned to her patient when he quietly commented on a hoof problem he seemed to be having. At least this stallion was calmer than the rest it seemed, though it most likely had to do with his age. If she were to guess, he would be retiring soon, especially if his hooves hurt.
A quick check revealed nothing physical on the outside and she assumed that it was most likely arthritis. Definitely wasn't what he wanted to hear, but Nivinara helpfully suggested that he could take herbs for pain and stay a few more years or start looking at retirement if it became to much.
With a quiet 'thank you' the stallion was off and she turned to call up the next one, only to freeze in place upon coming face to face with a younger but much taller stallion. Her ears immediately flicked back and her body stiffened on impulse, it felt to familiar to what had happened when she was younger, but she knew better to assume things so she stayed put and waited as he seemed to struggle with something to say. Confused she was about to ask if something was wrong but then he spoke and her mouth snapped shut.
What?
She stared at him for a moment, utterly baffled at his attempt at what appeared to be small talk. Why he would ever want to talk to her she would never understand but with that knowledge she relaxed slightly and gave a small laugh, "Hardly," She finally managed, deciding to go ahead and give this stallion a once over while she spoke, "It's always good to be sure of your health, especially for someone in your line of work. Wouldn't you agree?"

Thrynn Stallion / Raider / War-Forged
It was obvious he had made the short mare uncomfortable, but who could really blame her? Thrynn shifted his front hooves back and forth as she finally answered, still sounding unsure but at least a little less uncomfortable than she looked. Maybe if he just focused on his bet, and not those green eyes peering up at him... Was that how Beck did it?
"Well, I suppose health is important... But we could always seek you Medics out ourselves," he answered, but quickly decided he sounded like a foal complaining to his mother that his medicine tasted icky and changed suit. "The Warlord could at least have her Circle think up something better than this," he added, gesturing at the disgruntled display of stallions that had taken over the clearing.
"This set up doesn't really give many options to foster any good relationships... What with you lot coming in to check on us like we're helpless foals," the peach stallion continued, trying to sound suave while simultaneously swallowing the lump in his throat. He wasn't the best at this double-meaning kind of talk. At least not when applied in this kind of scenario. "Besides," he forged on, "I'm sure you would rather be doing something else than listening to us boys fight with one another."
"So, what kinds of things would you rather be doing?" Thrynn let the statement linger; it could sound innocent enough, but when it came from a stallion who approached a mare seemingly out of the blue, it took on more than a little meaning. It was all up to her now, the tiny mare with the striking mane and tail. She could just as easily brush him off as another wolfish Raider, and then he'd have to step his pursuit up a notch. Then he'd really be getting on Beck's level, Thrynn couldn't remember a time a mare had fallen for the grey stallion's poor attempt at sweet talk on the first try. He always had to push it.

Nivinara Mare | Medic | War-Forged
The Raider's reply hardly surprised her, she knew they all more than likely did not like this arrangement. But it was what Warlord and Circle ordered of them to do every month, as she was told at least. Nivinara certainly didn't mind, not if she could help make sure those defending the herd were in top condition. Even then it really wasn't her place to question what the Warlord wanted. Nivinara glanced back up at him, after giving him a quick once over and then followed his gaze to the group of stallions, all upset and shuffling about like pouting colts. It was still amusing how a bunch of grown stallions could be so childish about something as simple as a check up. Shaking her head, she turned back just about to let him know that he was good to go and call up the next stallion. But his next comment caught her off guard. Did he think her job was stuffy? Maybe, but she enjoyed healing others, it wasn't very much of a chore for her. And yet before she could reply she was dumbstruck again by his question. What would she rather be doing? Right now?"I..." What was she suppose to say? She enjoyed her job so she honestly didn't mind working but now that she thought about it... Nivinara looked up at the stallion, confused. He had said so himself he didn't much care for this check-up they were performing, so why bother talking to one of the medics of his own will? "Right now? My job. I don't mind caring for others, I enjoy healing." A smile finally appeared at that. She really did enjoy her job, it was always nice to help others out, however much she could. Even if it meant helping them move on. Still, she couldn't shake the feeling that there was more meaning behind his words, but she wasn't sure if she should be worried or just annoyed at herself for thinking such things. After all there were far prettier mares here and in the herd in general. And even if he was talking about that, it almost felt like a cruel joke. It's not the first time she's had a stallion hit on her due to a dare. That definitely had not ended well. "If anything, I would probably be at home with my familiar, or out for a walk since it is such a nice day today." She decided to go for the safer route and not let her worries get the best of her, but just to be sure... "What would you rather be doing right now?"

Thrynn Stallion / Raider / War-Forged
"That's such a goody-goody answer," Thrynn said with a chuckle, but it was more of a good-humored jab than anything else,"You shouldn't choose your job over free time, that's why it's called a job."
Thrynn stood still as she finished her inspection of him, and while he knew she was only doing her duty as a Medic, he had to consciously make an effort to keep an unwanted flush from creeping onto his cheeks. “So, am I healthy? Do I pass?” he asked, trying to seem aloof. He was glad the freckled mare was so short, it would be easier to avoid looking her in the eye and thus losing his nerve. “If I do, how about you let me join you on a walk later, once all this nonsense is over” he continued, “You said so yourself, it is a nice day. I'll be your personal escort.”
The last part sounded a bit cheesy to him, but it felt like the right thing to say in the moment. At any rate, it sounded nice and flirty, and that was what he was going for.
“You can bring your familiar, too,” he added as an afterthought. Maybe she would feel more comfortable if she had a pet come along... Beck wouldn't have thought of that, he hated animals, Thrynn thought with a twinge of satisfaction. “What kind do you have, anyway?” he asked. He was picturing something small and docile, like ... a bunny, or a tiny cat. Or maybe a bird. Mare's liked little fuzzy things they could dote over, if his sister was any kind of example to go off of. She was always bringing home stray animals from the woods that she insisted needed her tender loving care before they were fit to be released back outside. The peach stallion almost smiled at the memory. His sister would like this mare, he thought... Wait, what even was this mare's name?
“I-I'm Thrynn, by the way,” he added hastily, internally berating himself for forgetting such a simple but integral part of any conversation. He really wasn't cut out for this... Thrynn could hear Beck's boisterous voice over the din of the clearing, but he couldn't make out what the idiot stallion was saying. Probably something sexual. Thrynn was positive that he wasn't cut out for that kind of talk. He could only hope that something he said would make the cute little mare happy.

Nivinara Mare | Medic | War-Forged
Well, it wasn't like she hadn't heard that before. A lot of horses said that, but she really did enjoy helping people. It was something her mother made sure to teach her and well, past experiences made her want to make sure others knew they could look to her for help if they needed it. Perhaps she was too open about it but she still could never turn down someone in need. Nivinara did open her mouth to reply about his playful jab at her job not being a good answer for her free time, but she sighed instead. He was right after all. In that case she supposed her little collection of books she had and what little flowers she had been growing in her own time was more of a hobby, but a Raider like himself wouldn't be interested in such frivolous things. At his question, the medic sighed and shook her head with a small smile, figuring he was ready to get away and she expected him to go off with the other Raiders that were finished and start rough housing again. However as she was about to answer he surprised her again, by offer to go on a walk with her. The little mare actually looked up at him in clear surprise, she had never really been offered company before, in fact she wasn't sure what to make of this stallions sudden interest in her. Perhaps she was just paranoid and maybe a little insecure, but she wasn't exactly the pretties of the bunch with her scars and all, but she also was more worried about motives than her looks. Raiders were notorious for playing pranks and she didn't want to be on the receiving end of one. Nivinara wanted to say she had other things to do, maybe something medical? Yeah that would scare him off... Maybe. But when he mentioned bringing Calder along, Nivinara stopped herself before she could say anything. She would feel immensely safer with the giant dog following along should anything happen, but no one had actually bothered to care about her familiar, or her hobbies before. If it had been just a prank he wouldn't have asked. Still cautious but, a bit relieved at her own conclusion, the little mare finally smiled back, even more at his slight stutter, finding it more cute and even better a tell for how honest he was being. "Well, it's nice to meet you Thrynn," Nivinara replied, relaxing now that her worries were starting to ebb away, "My name is Nivinara. But you can call me Nivi," She added that last bit with a small laugh. It was a nickname, but one given simply because her name was long, she didn't mind it however, she quite liked it in fact. Glancing over to the side, she did notice that the medics were in need of her help, but with how many where here she was sure they would finish early, "Anyway you are indeed healthy, and free to go. I do need to return to work, but," Nivinara added quickly before he got the wrong idea, "I would actually love to go for a walk with you, if you're willing to wait for me?"

Thrynn Stallion / Raider / War-Forged
Oh wow, she actually agreed.
Thrynn could feel the blood rushing in his ears. He knew this had started off as a competition between him and Beck, but he never actually thought it would lead to him getting a date out of it.
"Sure, uh, sure," he repeated, feeling a little foolish with such a tactless comeback being all he could think of. "I'll wait. I'll just... trot some laps, maybe, around the clearing. I don't like to be still for very long." Ok, now he was oversharing. Sure it's manly enough to say that he was going to go trot some laps but he should've stopped there. He needed to get of here before he dug himself further into a hole.
"I'll be around, Nivi. We can find each other once most of the other Raiders are out of the clearing," he said, already beginning to turn away. He had to get out of there and clear his head before he was left with her again. If he could just keep his cool this one time, for one afternoon, he would be golden. Once he had some space, he spotted Beck across the clearing. They grey stallion was being looked over by and older and incredibly stern looking medic. Thrynn caught his eye and smirked, puffing out his chest theatrically. Beck frowned and mouthed some choice words in Thrynn's direction, which only confirmed that he had been watching the exchange between himself and Nivinara. However, Thrynn didn't want to spend anymore time talking to the stallion today, he had to go jog off some of his nerves. Hopefully Beck would go sulk somewhere after his check up and leave him the hell alone.
Once he had maneuvered his way through the horses in the field he stopped at the tree line and sighed. He needed to get moving, fast. His breathing became rhythmical as he set off at a brisk pace around the perimeter of the clearing, his muscles rejoicing at the activity after spending all morning waiting to be seen by one of the Medics. Aside from calming himself down, he wondered if Nivinara might think it appealing that was running around while he waited for her to join him. Mares liked that kind of thing, right? Stallions showing off their physical prowess? He honestly wasn't sure. He was too preoccupied trying to think of things to talk about while they walked.

Nivinara Mare | Medic | War-Forged
Watching him stumble over his words made it all the more endearing. She was still cautious of his motives but she was willing to at least try and talk to him and see where this would go. The idea of having her familiar with her certainly made this easier to agree to for sure. Nivinara wasn't exactly the most social horse in the herd but she always did better with Calder around to keep her anxiety grounded. The medic gave a small nod and a smile, watching as Thrynn walked off to run some laps with almost nervous energy before she turned herself to gather her things and move off to the next group of rambunctious Raiders. Even as she did she couldn't help but glance back to where she had last seen Thrynn, spotting him just at the far end of the clearing. That was when she noticed the odd posturing and followed his gaze to another gray stallion, whom had a rather foul look on his face that just so happened to be directed at Thrynn. That made her nervous. She could only assume what the exchange meant and if the two had played some sort of prank on her. Unable to dwell on it at the moment Nivinara turned and continued on to give her check up to the group of young Raiders. It was exhausting really. The whole time a lot of them acted like colts and complained or snarked at one another. At one point she very nearly had to start fighting in the middle of her check up, thankfully this group had an older Raider among them and instantly whipped them into shape and scolded them for causing her grief. By the end of the of it all she was more mentally exhausted then physically and was quiet ready to just head home now that all was said and done. She had to wait for the older medic's to give the clear however, and once that happened she had never seen a group of horses move so fast. The younger Raiders just up and ran from the clearing, thankful to finally be free, while the older of the lot casually made their way out. Thankful to finally have some peace, Nivinara went about picking up and packing away her things, absently remembering that she should look for Thrynn, but then she recalled the exchange between him and the other stallion and figured that if anything it was a joke and Thrynn probably left with the others. Disappointed but not overly surprised, the medic placed the saddle bag on her back and made her way back towards the entrance.

Thrynn Stallion / Raider / War-Forged
Thrynn had manged to work up a sweat by the time his fellow Raiders started to trickle out of the clearing, and shortly after it seemed the bulk of the stallions saw their opportunity and took it, racing from the clearing and leaving dazed Medics behind them in the dust. The appaloosa stopped in a corner of the meadow, catching his breath and scanning the clearing for Nivinara. He had said they would meet after her work was done, but he couldn't spot her. A seed of worry and doubt bloomed; maybe she had just been agreeing with him the whole time so he would leave her alone. He turned his ears back and felt a blush color his cheeks. This was embarrassing. He looked around himself again, self-conscious this time, but of course no one but himself would know that he had reason to be embarrassed. Any passerby would just assume he had stuck around to exercise, and the blush was from his exertion.
Sullenly, he began to make his way towards the small break in the surrounding trees and head back towards town. While he was busy chastising himself in his head, he noticed a curly tail bouncing ahead of him on the trail. His shame was swapped for anxiety as he realized it was Nivinara. Should he catch up to her? Or let her go? Maybe she hadn't seen him back in the clearing? Or maybe she was trying to slip away before he could join up with her... It was impossible to know, and that only made Thrynn more doubtful.
The nervous Raider walked a few more paces, staring hopelessly divided at the back of Nivinara's head. She was getting further ahead of him as his anxiety slowed down his hooves. Only a couple of other Medics remained on the trail, the Raiders having all booked it out of the area as fast as their hooves could carry them, and that settled Thrynn down just a bit. No one was really around to see him get rejected if that was how she felt. So he swallowed hard and took off at a lope up the trail. "Nivinara!" he called, not wanting to gallop up on her with now warning. He reached her in a few moments, wishing he had longer to plan out what he was going to say. "I guess I missed you back in the clearing," he began, "Uh- I, well... Sorry about that. I didn't mean to leave you behind. Or well, ahead I guess," he corrected, letting everything flow out a little more quickly than he wanted.

Nivinara
Mare | Medic | War-Forged
With what little hope she had Nivinara had paused just outside the entrance, taking a moment to glance around to see if maybe Thrynn had simply waited for her here, but the stallion wasn't there and all she saw was the throng of Raider's galloping away and the medics slowly meandering down the path. She shouldn't be surprised really, it had more than likely been a joke, one that she was all too familiar with. She was short and scarred and she was sure some of the Raider's had heard about her poor attempt at becoming a Valkyrie and that alone had been the source of teasing for quiet some time when she was younger. With a sigh, the little medic continued on down the path, just wanting to get home now and away from here just in case the Raider's decided to come back and mess with her. The mare hadn't gotten much further from the entrance to the meadow before she heard her name called out in a now familiar voice. Surprised if anything, she stopped and turned, watching nervously as Thrynn came galloping down the path towards her. And already she was preparing for the teasing, but she really didn't expect him to apologize of all things. What could he be sorry for? Confused and utterly at a lost for what to do, Nivinara just stared up at him, trying to think of something to say, "You didn't?" She finally managed. Did that mean he actually wanted to spend time with her? What was that posturing about then? She took that moment to glance behind him, trying to see if that grey stallion was around. But there was no one, they were alone. Uh-oh. Did she just accidentally give him the impression of rejection? Flustered, she looked back up at him, and she could see it on his face. He thought she rejected him. Feeling rather guilty for assuming the worse, she glanced away, "I'm sorry," Nivinara blurted out first and foremost, feeling that he deserved an apology first before she tried to explain. "I-I just assumed... I mean," That wasn't good enough, just tell the truth! Sighing softly, Nivinara looked up at him, embarrassed and guilty, "I seen that look you and that other Raider gave each other. I- Well I thought that it had been a joke, it really wouldn't have been the first time Raiders have done that to me.""I'm sorry..." She murmured pitifully, feeling rather awful now.

Thrynn Stallion / Raider / War-Forged
Oh no, she saw that.
Thrynn felt awful. It was obvious Nivinara felt similarly, and if he wanted to he could deny the whole thing; claim that the look he had given Beck was over something totally unrelated. But the little mare looked so defeated and ashamed of herself for thinking that she came to a wrong conclusion about his motives. No, he couldn't let her think that way about herself. Not when he was in the wrong like this. Oh Kaia bless him, this is what he got for trying to play Beck's games. He was going to beat that stallion into the mud the next time he saw him. He'd be washing brown out of his silver coat for the next season if Thrynn had his way.
"It wasn't a joke... But it was a bet, kind of," he admitted, feeling his cheeks burn with shame. "That grey stallion you saw me talk to, he - well, we, had a bet to see who could get a, well, uh a date, first." Thrynn was struggling to explain himself without sounding too overbearing, "Not that this is a date," he added quickly, not wanting to sound presumptive and cocky, but then he decided that wasn't quite right either, "I mean, unless you want it to be a date, then, uh, I guess it could be a date."
This was going terribly. He was going on about dates in the same breath that he admitted he had started talking to Nivinara because of a bet. She probably wants to kick his ass just as much he wants to kick Beck's. "Listen, I know this sounds bad. Well, it is bad," he admitted, lowering his head, "But you are a very nice mare. I'm sorry. It was... stupid, and childish of me... I'm sorry you were the one who got caught up in this." He dared to meet her eyes for a moment, hoping she would understand that he was sincere. But all the sincerity in the world wouldn't matter now. He couldn't take what he had done back.
Part of him wanted desperately to admit that without the motivation of that bet, and the suddenness and adrenaline that it came with, he wouldn't have had the courage to ask her to go for a walk with him. It would maybe make her understand, but it also might make him look like some sissy colt too afraid to talk to any of the fillies. Or worse, she might think he was lying just to garner her sympathy. Either of those outcomes were worse than what he looked like currently. A huge jerk. An awful stallion messing with a sweet mare for the fun of it. That was what Raiders were known for, right? He was just adding to the stereotype.
But he didn't want her to think of him like that. He pawed at the ground, frustrated with himself. "Nivinara, you seem... very sweet. I don't want you to think I did this just to upset you. Because I didn't. I know it looks bad, but I promise I didn't," he insisted very softly, "For whatever my promise is worth."

Nivinara
Mare | Medic | War-Forged
Of course it was a bet. The more he spoke the more she felt her face burn with embarrassment and even anger. Maybe it hadn't been a joke, but a bet somehow felt far worse than that. Like it had been such an awful thing and that it had to have been made into a bet for him to even bother talking to her. But he is here, and oddly enough he seemed ashamed of himself for going through with it. Biting back her retort she kept quiet and allowed him to say his piece, even as she looked anywhere but at him, if only to keep her emotions in check. Surprise came to her when he apologized and she dared to look at him, knowing that if he was lying to would show in his expression. However all she saw was the same sincerity that he spoke with, and that put her at ease. Maybe it had started out as a bet, cruel as it may be, Thrynn didn't seem like that type of stallion. And to be honest, none of them ever apologized to her for the jokes, that alone was enough to sway her. A little bit of kindness can go a long way after all. Nivinara watched him for a moment after he got it all out. She still wasn't overly trusting of Raiders but that was more past experiences with certain horses talking. She really had no right to judge Thrynn based on his occupation and he did tell the truth... "Hey," Smiling softly at the taller horse, she nodded towards the path that lead away from town, "We should hurry before it gets too late." She didn't want to dwell on this, and she couldn't exactly accept his apology just yet, too many bad memories were tied to moments like this. Besides that they still had to pick up Calder and she didn't want to be out late, it did get pretty cold here even during late summer.
"If you still want to walk with me that is..?" She could only hope this didn't backfire on her. Thrynn seemed sincere and she needed to believe that he actually meant it, otherwise she may never get another chance at happiness.
