Mai rolled her eyes. This was unfair. She should have been with the War Lord or the other Valkyries on patrol! Not baby sitting the children. They were going to be just as annoying the expedition with them... Buh. Here at least she was with her father... She gazed out the small window she could reach with her height- Blank. The wind was howling and the snowstorm was certainly putting up a fight against the fortress but she was not going down. With the storm, the cold was getting to Mai's bones. It didn't matter with how much she had trained, how much muscle she had gained, she still had to wrap up warm in her cloak.
She twisted her lips and moved away from the window, flattening her ears. Where were the patrols? Mai inhaled deeply through her nostrils and made her way over to her father, nuzzling his cheek- More specifically the cheek that still had...Fur. She stared at him in concern, focusing on his deep, dark eyes. Perhaps mentioning the situation with the other Valkyries was wise... There were the others- But her father was experienced and perhaps knew more about Hira's plans. She wasn't sure.
Mai let her eyelids drop for a few moments, swallowing. Later...
"Father," She spoke with a gentle tone. Full of respect and...Attempts at being professional in front of the others. "Do let me know if you need anything, a blanket, a drink, anything. Okay? I don't want you to be on your own. Regardless of the fortress being our sanctuary in this storm... Anything can happen." She sighed heavily, looking around at the others in case they overheard. "I think that should go for everyone. No wandering off- Everyone stay here in the main hall please. Especially you two." She glowered at the Gregori and Anika, warning them.
"I don't want to tell your mother you've been terribly behaved." She stuck her tongue out. Being an adult was fun- Wait no she was 17.

Otama | War-Forged | Valkyrie
Valor is a gift. Those having it never know for sure whether they have it till the test comes. And those having it in one test never know for sure if they will have it when the next test comes.
The past few days had been mostly peaceful, she had been enjoying playing with the children. She had often spent time with Anika, she and the filly had a very good relationship. Her new leg, gifted to her by Kaia, had been a huge topic of discussion by the children, and she had enjoyed just talking with the children about it. But there was an undercurrent of worry, her sisters-in-arms were a few days overdue in returning to the Fortress. Òtama knew her sisters could handle themselves, but she still worried.
The storm howled outside of the shuttered windows, rattling the wood against the stone. It was the first real storm for the winter season and it was growing to be vicious. She lay on some cushions in front of a roaring fire, her new leg stretched out before her. She was still getting used to actually feeling all of her leg again. Veka was no where to be seen, he hated the attention and the loud noises, but her other Familiar, Rua was enjoying the company, playing with anyone who would humor the large Sabercat. She would do her best to keep the children safe and secure in the Fortress, with as little worry as she could manage.
Òtama reached with her teke, for a stack of books she had been steadily making her way through. Stories were always a good way to pass the long Onean winters, her grandparents had managed to find the written versions of the ones her father had told her all those years ago. She chuckled to herself as Mai left the room with a warning to the twins, “Misbehave? These two?” she teased as she stretched out her new leg once more.

Marshal | Raider
Some distance away, Marshal gazed through a window at the whirling snow. To him, it looked like white-out conditions, but it could have just been his eye playing tricks. Since the vindicator ambush and his flub up with the crossbow, his left eye had taken up a slight cataract. Nothing severe, but it gave a certain field a slight blur and paleness. He watched out the window for any sign of the War Lord and Valkyrie patrol. Snow like this would slow anyone down, he told himself, no matter who they were.
A touch on his still fluffy cheek drew his attention from the window. Mai, his daughter whom he was so proud of. She looked worried, but who wouldn't be in a storm like this.
"Father. Do let me know if you need anything, a blanket, a drink, anything. Okay? I don't want you to be on your own. Regardless of the fortress being our sanctuary in this storm... Anything can happen."
He let himself smile and chuckle. She was being so serious, something that hardly mattered to him, but perhaps Valkyries were taught different. In a way, he found it amusing.
"I'll be fine, Mai." His voice was low, slightly drowsy from the chill. But he kept the tone casual hoping to ease his daughter's mind.
"Perhaps you need an extra coat." Marshal jested. Turning his head to look over the rest of the group. Three other Valkyrie and the War Lord's children. He didn't feel unwelcome, but the presence of young fighters did make him feel outclassed.

The small, fuzzy zonkey currently rested near Otama, a book of her own open between her front legs. Her familiar, Casper, was pressed against her side. The timid snow leopard wasn't used to having too many horses around, but after awhile he began to relax. Addy wasn't going to push him out of his comfort zone, honestly the snowie could roam wherever he pleased, but for now he sure makes for a good furnace.
Addeva glanced outside a nearby window, watching the snow fall harshly.
Even though she'd rather be out doing more action packed things, Addeva had been enjoying spending time with Anika and Grigori and relaxing with some of her fellow Valkyries. The addition of Marshal and Mai was interesting too. Sure it was...weird not having Aly around. But Addy had been keeping herself occupied with a few nature books, trying not to be TOO jealous of Alyshia's call to duty. Though since Holmsa, Kathra's disappearance, and Aly's "vision thing", Addy has been a bit more antsy than usual when it comes to safety. The lateness of her patrol definitely wasn't helping either. At least she had her dagger with the rest of her stuff nearby, hidden on a shelf away from the babies of course.
Speaking of babies, Addy let out a little laugh at Otama's remark. She glanced at her, blue eyes falling to the mule's leg. Her curiosity bubbled whenever she looked at it and this time she kinda just blurted it out. "So...Otama, can you actually like...feel your new leg? Like pain and everything?" The little valkyrie asked, a tad bit wide eyed.

Amber
Amber was a rather quiet babysit. It wasn’t that she was unused to it, in fact she had been saddled with watching Nathaniel a lot, even when she was stil a child herself. She knew what to do, but it didn’t make her feel any less out of place. She wasn’t sure if she was supossed to be offended to be left caring for little kids or honored that Hira entrusted her precious offspring to them. She settled on a swirling mix of both. The kids behaved well enough for kids. The other Valkyrie seemed to get along with them more easily though. She wondered if they’d be better mothers. Not that she wanted a kid now. Maybe at all. The idea of getting close to any stallion disgusted her. Her nose scrunched up at the thought, bows creasing.
Mai told them to behave and Otama laughed at that. “They’re good kids,” Amber felt inclined to say. It came out sounding mechanicly. She focused on the conversation of Otama’s leg instead. Amber still couldn’t believe it, that Kaia had reached out and given Otama such a thing, restored in a state better than before. She was kinda jealous, but also just happy. She had given Kaia many thanks. Her ears perked and she smiled ever so little. She was curious too, but didn’t know how to question the other mare about it.

L O R E N C I O "Innocence is like polished armor - it adorns and defends." ......
Lorencio stood at the back of the room, watching the other horses with wide eyes. He didn't know any of these horses well at all, though he'd seen them around. Most of them were Valkyries, which seemed to be a big deal here, oddly enough. One of them had a really cool leg given to her by Kaia, the earth goddess his mother had told him about. She seemed to be less powerful than Ignacio, but he held his tongue about that. His mom had said that not all the horses here would understand why they respected Ignacio; it was weird, since he was so obviously a powerful god, but it seemed to be true.
After another few moments of watching, Lorencio trotted forward, eager to hear more about the mare's leg, ears pricked and eyes bright. Scorch stayed where she was, watching with her parti-colored eyes, her tail wagging softly. She was getting really big - she was almost full-grown, and it turned out she was going to be big. Like, really big.
As he approached the mare he glanced at the other two foals once more and stopped in his tracks. Somehow he hadn't realized that one of them was a kirin. Right, his mom had said he was going to be staying with Hira's children. What were their names? Anna? Gregory? Something like that. He trotted over to talk to them, distracted from the leg by the prospect of new friends. He whistled for Scorch, a trick he'd learned only a few weeks before, and she trotted over to stand next to him, tail still gently waving.
"Hey! I'm Lorencio, Mateo's son. It's very nice to officially meet you." He hoped that was polite enough. He didn't want to get off on the wrong foot.

She smiled softly, hearing that her father was fine sent relief in waves washing over her body. Though it quickly came to an end and she stiffened. Mai glared at Marshal over her shoulder. The tall mare readjusted her wings under her cloak and curled them tighter to her body. "I'm fine." Mai wasn't kind, she was sharp and disgruntled. She raised a brow and took a step back closer towards her father. "Did you really think that was a smart idea mentioning my being col-" She quickly stopped herself and swallowed her words, eyes flicking over to the Valkyries. "Just don't bring up my weaknesses, please? It's already hard enough to be weaker than others. I don't need even more of my weaknesses being exposed." She huffed and lowered her head, continuing to patrol by the door and linger in anticipation.
She flickered her ear towards the Valkyries. "It's all well being the War Lord's children but, they weren't exactly well behaved on the expedition. They were playing around in a frustrating- I-I mean a potentially dangerous situation. I don't want a repeat of that. Thankfully Hira had control of the situation.... But she's not here. We need them to not...Act up."

Any time spent with her Valkyries was the best time in the world.
She had only blubbered for a second when she realized mama wasn't staying, big wet tears running down her cheeks, but suddenly there was Otama with her shiny leg and the striped donkey who was almost her size and the golden mare who was always so nice and good. And an older man who looked at her with soft eyes. Ani loved him already.
The one with wings wasn't very pleasant though. Ani shuddered away from her whenever possible.
"I don't want to tell your mother you've been terribly behaved."
Ani had pulled her ears back, shrinking behind her brother at the mare's words. She was so big with her blue wings. They were beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
The spotted colt with the dog was a stranger, though, and he was a little bigger and talked a little better than she could. Ani was suddenly overwhelmed with shyness at talking to a colt who spoke really really well. She stayed quiet.
But with the energy of a rabbit constantly running in her body, she felt a little wiggle of boldness to show off to her friend. She could only say her name (barely) but she could run. She nipped Grigori on the crest before exploding into a speedy blur, running laps around the full room at top speed, her little hooves clack-clack-clacking on the stone floor until one slipped and she lurched sideways...
...tumbling right into the winged mare's chest.

Grigori liked Otama best. She had funny ears and a sweet voice and a shiny leg that glittered like uncle Alistair's broadsword. He wasn't allowed to touch the blade- how uncle grumbled when he got close! -but he could touch Otama's leg all he liked, mesmerizing himself with its shiny surface. He could almost see his reflection, and being too young to realize the many negative implications of his scales, he simply enjoyed the way the metal distorted his face. As the adults spoke around him, talking about whatever adult things the adults cared about, Grigori rocked back and forth on his hooves, staring at his reflection in the mule's leg, watching his nose balloon and shrink.
Grigori did not like Mai best. She hadn't been any fun at all on their previous adventure, and now she grumbled, just like uncle did but without the undertone of affection. Grigori looked up at her, perplexed. He had seen mama yell at all the girl-adults in the room, but she had never yelled at him or Annie. It was empty threat, and he turned to relay this information to Anika in a garbled vocabulary that she seemed perfectly able to understand the intention of, if not precisely the words. He accented his flawless logic with a sharp nod, just like uncle Lark did whenever he said something really smart, which was always, because uncle Lark knew everything.
Wait. He liked Amber best. Her compliment made his ears feel hot, because Amber was pretty, really pretty, with long hair and fur that reminded him of a sunset. He didn't know why he cared that she was pretty, just that she was and he did, and it made him feel embarrassed in strange way. He couldn't even look at her. Bleating plaintively, he pushed his face into Addeva's chest.
Addeva kind of smelled like mama: pine woods and fresh frost. He decided he liked her best.
He didn't hide for terribly long. A voice he didn't recognize called out to him, and Grigori raised his head to look back at the source. It was a colt! A new friend! And the new friend had a dog! Yes, this new colt was definitely the one he liked best. Lorencio was much older, it seemed, capable of holding a polite conversation, where Grigori himself only managed to blurt out his name and fit a dopey little smile across his lips. Nailed it.
In that moment Anika became a whirlwind, teasing him with a nip and running about. His attention yanked towards her, and then back to Lorencio, who he decided ought to join in on the tag too. With a squeal, he reared up and tapped the colt's nose - only to overestimate himself and fall backwards into Otama.
At least the mule would react better than Mai.

Flicking from the focus of the door, Mai watched Anika carefully bolt around the room before she was out off her own sight. She figured the other Valkyries would keep eyes on her. Mai frowned, closing her eyes as an overwhelming sense of guilt hung heavy on her shoulders. The bags under her eyes wouldn't encourage the mare to get anymore sleep recently. It was taxing on the body but then again, wasn't? She was walking on needles all the time... Pfsh...
Mai felt the mass of something hard collide with her chest, fresh wounds acting up. She felt the sharp cold sting of her injury flash through her body and Mai gasped in agony. In reflex and pain, she swung quickly to grasp Anika's scruff and fling her up from her feet. The tall mare had caused the little filly to gain some height as she then threw her to the ground. It was in the last instance though that Mai yanked her neck back, gripping tightly onto her as she tried to soften the landing for her as much as she could. She let go and placed her foot against Anika as she came in contact with the stone floor. The tall pegasus stared down at her. Mai wasn't impressed.
She sighed heavily and shook her head. "Anika, please." Mai pleaded and nudged the filly's cheek with her muzzle. "Forgive me but- Ah...Sorry, you're not quite old enough to understand I guess..." Mai admitted with embarrassment and defeat. "That hurt me Anika." She twisted her mouth in hopes that the filly would understand that much. Mai pulled off her cloak in one fell swoop, dumping the white beast atop Anika. "Go be a beast and scare your brother or something..."
She gestured with her head and lifted her foot of off Anika. Mai turned away and tried to ignore the cold creeping up her spine, her wounds exposed to the air. Deep, crusty(mmm) gashes and fresh scars laced her back. She didn't exactly want to expose her weak points to the air and for everyone else but something to divert the tension from flipping a foal on it's side... Something else is kinda ideal.

Otama | War-Forged | Valkyrie
Valor is a gift. Those having it never know for sure whether they have it till the test comes. And those having it in one test never know for sure if they will have it when the next test comes.
Òtama looked at her leg, “I feel things through it, but not pain. I stepped on a stone earlier and only felt a pressure with it.” She flexed her pastern and the hoof moved up and down, just as reactive as her own flesh and blood limbs. She still had some phantom pains along it but she was sure as she got used to the leg they would dissipate. “Hurt just as bad as when I lost it when I… got it.” If that made sense. Òtama smiled at her Sisters though to reassure them. She watched Lorencio trot over to the twins and her smile was gentler, it was good to see him socializing with them. He was a little older than them but it seemed as if he needed friends close to his age. When Anika started a game of tag, by nipping at her brother and dashing off, Otama had to chuckle to herself, so full of energy these foals.
Grigori tried to then tag Lorencio but over balanced, tumbling back towards Òtama. She acted quickly, bracing his small body with her teke, slowing his fall until he rested against her side. “Still working on your balance huh?” she said playfully. Rua huffed happily from where she lay on Òtama’s other side and nuzzled Grigori playfully, she would play tag with the foals. It had amazed Òtama just how well the large sabertooth got on with children, her many nieces and nephews loved to play with the pale cat. A tumble of movement caught her eye and she watched in dismay as little Anika tumbled into Mai’s chest. Her ears came forward and she watched Mai grip Anika and start a throw to the ground. She noted the sudden realization and abort of the action but it worried her all the same. Òtama nudged Grigori up right before standing herself, walking over to the other two, Mai had put a pelt over the young filly telling her to go be a beast.
“I’m sure Rua would love to be a beast with you Ani,” she murmured to the young filly, nudging her with her nose back over to where the other two foals were. She sighed, “Mai we have to watch ourselves around the foals,” she said so just the other mare could hear her, “It’s good you realized what was happening, and I know its hard to turn off that gut instinct…” she sighed again, “How are your wounds doing? They still look quite raw.” She wanted to connect with the other mare, so many things had been happening lately that she hadn’t been able to get to know some of the new mares in the Valkryies.

L O R E N C I O "Innocence is like polished armor - it adorns and defends." ......
The little foals were so full of energy! Lorencio laughed as Grigori, the kirin colt, introduced himself. He was so little he had trouble talking still, which was honestly great, it meant he was learning new things all the time. The world had seemed so much bigger and more interesting when Lorencio was that age. Not that it seemed small or boring now, of course. It was huge and there were millions of things to see. It was just that Lorencio had had a chance to see some of them.
He almost yelped as Grigori jumped up at his face, and Scorch did. The colt didn't reach him, and tumbled backwards, unbalanced on his thin legs. Lorencio jumped to catch him, but one of the mares - the one with the amazing metal leg - caught him first and sent him off to play, her huge cat with the cool teeth looking almost as eager as play as the two little foals. A game of tag sure did sound like a lot of fun, and Lorencio jumped back from Grigori to keep from being tagged right away. Still, he had to play fair. He was bigger and faster than either of the little foals, and he didn't want to make it too hard for them to catch him. He slowed to a canter, then nearly stopped as the light-colored filly was almost thrown into the air by one of the mares. What was wrong with her? The filly had just been playing. Lorencio's ears flicked back for a moment before he decided the mare had probably just been startled. Sometimes horses could be really jumpy, and she probably hadn't meant to be so harsh. He trotted over to the filly. "Hey! You okay? Grigori's gonna catch us if we don't start running right away!" He knew that when he had been little, and had fallen, it was better to be distracted. It made things less scary. Most of the time.

Amber
Valkyrie | Cis female
Though not bad children, the foal were rowdy as they ran around the room. Amber did her best to divide her attention between them and Otama, half worried if she looked away for a second one of them would have run off. She tried to remind herself that there were others here and it wasn't her sole task. Her uncle would not scold her for letting them out of her sight. It was different. She could relax a little. Indulge in averting some of her attention towards the mare she worried about.
It was sort of hard to hear, it had hurt to gain a leg. She supposed it was perhaps Kaia showing -letting her feel- that she was alive. She knew Otama could handle it. She believed in the mare. She wondered if Kaia would find her worthy of such gift as well. If she would need to loose a leg for it.
Her attention was diverted to the huge familiar in the room. Amber had kept glancing at it before and she looked at it again when Otama raised to her hooves and walked off to Mai. Amber didn't follow, not knowing Mai well enough and not sure if she was even wanted in their conversation. Watching the lion only gave her so much distraction, magnificent as it was, so she opted for trying to maybe start conversation with someone else.
Raider out of the question, she turned towards Addeva who had been previously been occupied by having Grigori pressed to her chest. It seemed the children liked her better as well. Amber sighed, awkwardly trying to strike up conversation. "So," she said, "I wonder when the others will come back."

Addeva watched curiously as Otama flexed her leg, listening closely as she answered her question. It was amazing what Kaia could do. "Wooow", the zonkey whispered softly. Addeva remembered when she was blessed with density control -- how awesome that was! -- but she couldn't imagine being gifted a whole limb! Otama was one lucky mare.
Before firing off another round of questions, the book between her front legs was replaced by a small, fuzzy little kirin. "Hi Grigori! Having fun?" Addy giggled before playfully blowing a puff of air in his small mane, ruffling it a bit. Just as soon as he came, the colt dashed off to join the equally adorable Lorencio. A smile was plastered on her face, watching the awkward legged foals bounce around. That smile quickly faded though, as Mai moved to throw Anika onto the floor. Addeva nearly jolted to her hooves, ready to do something, but when Mai realized what was happening, Addy remained where she was. Her small but subtle movement caused Casper to shift slightly with a protesting chirp. She watched as they spoke, deciding not to get up, especially since Otama went over to her anyway. Still, what the heck was that all about?
Her big ears flipped around as Amber spoke, nodding to the other Valkyrie's statement. "I know, it seems like they've been out there forever... I hope they're okay. Weren't they supposed to be back hours ago?" She huffed.

Marshal | Raider
Marshal let himself sigh and roll his eyes when Mai bit back at his comment. Let others think what they like, weakness was never on his list of worries. Marshal moved back to the window as his daughter fretted to the others about Children and Control. You couldn't control them. They could only maintain the illusion of control for a short time, only parents had rights to full rule.
Just then Anika, the little unicorn, popped up like a march hare and began taking laps around the room. The old horse provided a gentle "zoom" for affect as she went around. He noticed Lorencio striking quite the conversation with the lizard boy, Grigori... Gizard? Yeah, perfect. That should strike a chord. He was just about to cheer the kirin child along with a hearty Go Gizard, when a quick motion caught his good eye. His stomach lurched watching the palomino filly be lifted by the scruff and nearly thrown back to the floor save for a deceleration. Marshal had to catch his own breath. His heart had begun pounding watching his daughter react on instinct. Was she okay? The bear pelt dropped on Anika as a peace offering, good move. Crusty wounds, neither old or new scattered on Mai's back made him want to rush her poor soul into town for aid. A Valkyrie's training seemed a tough route in his head, but he never asked Mai if she was doing okay.
Marshal remained by the window, sinking back against the stone. Questions regarding the other Valkyries and the War Lord brought his mind away from the stress of Flying Toddlers. His brown eyes passed back to the window. They were right. It had been hours since they passed the scheduled return. Snow was all he could see.
"I wouldn't worried it. Perhaps the storm is worse elsewhere and they've sheltered down." He spoke toward the center of the room, hoping to inspire some confidence. Though, what hope could he bring. Falling apart at the seams, he was probably only around due to his marksmanship and even that was in jeopardy now.

It happened too fast. She went from running around with glee to slipping to being banged on the cold stone floor. On the moment of impact, she let out a small yelp.
Her brother had wrestled her to the ground many times before- it was one of her favorite games- but for some reason, this time wasn't fun. When the winged mare stood over her, so big and scary, her giant hoof touching Ani's shoulder, tears started to well up in her eyes. She felt trapped. She had done something bad. She looked to her sides. Where was Grigori?
The mare was angry, and Ani wanted to shrink into the floor. She looked at the mare's chest, at the scrapes and wounds, and wondered if she had done that. Tears slipped down her cheeks.
But suddenly the mare's big soft white bear was on top of her, and it was so warm and cozy. She sniffed the tears away as the mare turned, and stumbled to her feet. The bear's huge head flopped over her shoulder. It was so big. Most of it spilled onto the ground. She felt swallowed up.
Her new spotty friend was suddenly talking to her, encouraging her to run from Grigori. Now this was fun! Now she was a bear! With a squeal and a tiny buck, she took off after him, the massive pelt dragging behind her.

A frantic scratching sound at the heavy wood door was, admittedly, difficult to hear over the sounds of the children playing, the fire crackling, and the storm raging. The sound of the door being brutally shoved open, however, was less difficult to miss.
A cold, bedraggled looking snow leopard staggered into the room, her eyes wild, tail lashing. Even dusted in a coating of snow and ice, she was immediately recognizable to the Valkyries: it was Poofkin, Alyshia's familiar.... and without Alyshia. The feline chirped once, a low, urgent sound, and ran from Amber, to Otama, to Mai, to Addeva, before darting back to the still open door, her tail fluffed and lashing in agitation. Her message was clear: she wished to be followed. Immediately. As the light from the room highlighted her fur, it shone wetly on two darker patches of... blood. Yet the leopard herself appeared uninjured.
The Valkyries on patrol must need your help! You can decide to go search for them or not as a group- if so, move to Plot 503: Camouflage
