Sterling is a wonderful place. Not only are the inhabitants soothed by the constant sound of the waterfall pouring from the underground, but they are graced by a skylight unlike any other in Sirith. Today was a wonderfully sunny day, the warm light filtering down from above in one glorious shaft of illumination. And irradiated Sterling was. Even when the sun wasn’t shining down from far above, the cavern walls were begemmed with crystals producing their ethereal glow. But with the sun pouring in, the walls glittered with the reflected ripples of Sterling's pool. Those who worshipped Cascade had no qualms praying at the shore of the pool on this day.
The artists of the New Generation took extra care showing off their wares, utilizing the natural light of Hireath’s sun to further the beauty of their creations. Some stalls were erected, other simply used their teke to hold up their garments or jeweling tools. And it was these horses, these fantastic and beautiful artists that always made Gemstone excited. She was jealous, naturally, at their obvious skill and endless talents. But she knew that she, too, was skilled. It was simply a matter of finding someone to help her grow.
Sadly, her grandmother, an old donkey who ran The Starlight Rest inn by herself after her husband's death, had no time to truly give Gemstone any assistance to follow her dreams, so the little filly had to figure it out on her own. Which, in all honesty, was just fine to her. It gave her independence and confidence, which was what she really needed to be successful.
The zonkey filly wandered through Sterling, eyeing the jewelry artists in particular. It was her dream to be able to cut and polish gemstones, fastening them into gold, silver, or platinum, and of course see other equines wear her creations. Nothing gave her more pride than to see her artistry be worn and adored. She was sure that was how every artist felt. How could they not when they created such beautiful things?
She paused at one table filled with hundreds of gemstones. Some were cut, some were raw, some were simply polished. But she knew them all just by looking at them. There were rubies and garnets in the red section, carnelians and topaz in the orange section, citrine and golden beryl in the yellow section, emeralds and peridots in the green section, sapphires and lapis in the blue section, and amethyst and sugilite in the purple section. Moonstone, onyx, diamonds, opals and rainbow pyrite were scattered in their own sections. She smiled to herself when she could name each kind, raw or cut, without any error.
Her favorites were definitely emerald and amethyst. Emerald because of her eyes, amethyst because of the purple cloak she had received when she was still a baby. She had collected a few small specimens over the years, thanks to her mining parents. Not to mention all the books on gemstones and gem cutting!
She shuffled on her hooves with glee at the very thought that this could be her someday. Just being around jewelry made her excited. Hopefully someday, someone would teach her, show her how to be the jeweler she dreamt of being.
