Briny crumbled the note in her grasp, shoving it into her saddle bags, only for the paper to be nestled into by her familiar, Riven. She had received a message from her dear friend to meet her in the library. While Briny was not one for the city, she was willing to comply.. thats just the kind of friend she was. Her hooves tapped on the hard street as she trotted on, her curly coat still damp from her time in the water for work. Her messy mop of a mane bounced along her neck and stuck to her forehead, causing her to shake her head every now and then in order to get the hair out of her eyes. Her long ears flopped forward as she went, a bright smile on her face.
She approached the library and pushed open the door, entering with a little jingle of a bell announcing her presence. The library was empty, save for the familiar faces of books and shelves. Briny did not know how to read, or even write for the matter, but she loved the dusty scent of books and, if she could find someone to read to her, the stories weren't half bad either!
"Hello?" She called, meandering her way through the maze of book cases, her ears swiveling as she poked her head around each case, ready to find her friend waiting just around the corner. After waiting for a while, she gave up with a huff, leaning against the soft wallpapered wall. Perhaps she was just early. It was then that Riven emerged from his home in the saddle bags, crawling onto the mare's withers before nestling into her hair with soft chirps. Briny grinned and rested her head against the wall, her golden gaze fixated on the door.

K R I S T O F E R
Seroran Planter
......
All Taline had told him was that she wanted a book about Alya. Oh, gods.
Kristofer was not particularly religious himself. He understood the concept of the Gods and the gifts they granted - and he did see those gifts on a daily basis. He understood the origin, and the stories, blah, blah, blah. Everything his mother had told him as a child, he knew well and could easily recite what she would tell him. Have faith in what is not yet seen, kiddo. Or else it may come back to bite you in the ass one day. Yet he hadn't seen a single shred of evidence since having become rather blase about it all that the gods, or whatever the hell resided in the stars, cared much at all about him. And clearly they cared not for their mortal counterparts - since his mother, rest her soul, had hung herself not even two weeks before. If the gods did exist, they sure did have a warped sense of humor.
He had arrived at the library without much time to think at all. The heat was meh, the lack of wind was meh, the bugs were meh. He hadn't walked particularly quickly, but if walking faster got him away from that little shit Nilam faster, he would definitely sprint his way to the library.
He wasn't much of one to read. His mother had taught him and Taline how to read and write, but he had never seen much of a use for it. Selora was the bookworm out of all them - constantly having her nose shoved in a book about world history when they were kids, and somehow getting into trouble even then and blaming it on him. He was a planter like his father, and his father's father, and his father's father's father, and so on. Who the hell needed books other than to tear out the pages to wipe your ass out in the desert? After all, that sand did get everywhere.
Using his shoulder to push the door open, Kristofer's ears pricked as a small bell went off, signaling that he was entering the building. Looking up and then around, his head went back down to shoulder level as he continued on walking, not really caring much if the door slammed behind him. It didn't, but either way he didn't care. Nodding to the little mule mare behind the desk - who clearly didn't go out in the sun much, Kristofer's search for the perfect book on Taline's favorite goddess began. He began scowering one shelf, and then another, and then another - yet come to find he was looking in the wrong section. Maybe reading is actually a little useful... dammit, Ma. He rolled his eyes at himself, flicking his nose upward to get a stray lock of white hair out of his face. Why he had ever thought to cut his hair shorter, he did not know. The front was constantly slipping out of his sloppy little stallion-bun now, and to hell with even trying to get it to cooperate. Taline had noticed that morning, his drudgery with his dark peppered locks, and has braided some of it in beads to try and keep it out of his face. If anything, it irritated his neck more and made him itch, but the beaming smile on Taline's face for accomplishing something as trivial as braiding her big brother's hair was completely worth it.
A... A... A... A for Alya? Maybe that was the right section? When he turned the corner, he lifted his head higher, attempting some form of respect - he wasn't too great at social decency. The mare before him, though definitely young, was probably the most organically beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her curly hair sat on her neck, still somewhat damp from what he could only guess was a swim - based on the shark tail that replaced what would have normally been hair like his own. She was a sort of spotty silver - he wasn't sure what to call their markings, but they looked very similar to the reflections of the ripples on the ocean - or so how he imagined them to look. He had never been to the ocean, and often avoided rivers except when was necessary. But damn, her eyes?? They were golden like the sun, and looking into them even for a moment (or maybe it was longer than that, was he staring?) made him feel as though he was tripping over himself. Her hair was a sandy blonde, and looked soft yet well textured - something about it made him want to wrap her up into a hug. Which was entirely inappropriate, he didn't even know her name.
Oh, gods, I'm staring. Dammit, Kristofer, get your shit together man. It's just a pretty girl, you're around pretty women all the time. Dude, quit staring. QUIT stARING. Blinking himself back into reality, Kristofer flinched a bit, taking a step back from her. "Excuse me, uh." His stammering would definitely one day be the utter death of him. Why was it that when he was around Nilam and Ila, he could act perfectly normal, but around this woman - who, again, he didn't even know the name of, he couldn't even manage a single sentence? What the hell was wrong with him?
"D-Do you know where the A section is? I'm, uh. A little lost." And then he noticed the A sign just above her head. Great.

Her ears flicked at the sound of the bell chiming at the front door, curiosity causing her to push from the wall. She wandered closer, peeking around from behind a book shelf, only to see the door close and no one around to be found. Sighing softly, she took a step back, finding her place once more beside the wall. Her attention shifted to the row of books beside her, her gaze skimming the beautiful leathers and bindings, only wishing she could read their names. The letters were intricate, swooping together like the waves in the ocean.
And speaking of the ocean.. The mare braced her hooves against the ground, dipping her head and shaking her still damp coat. Her curly hair stuck up in all angles, the curls of her coat tight and springy. At least now, however, it looked more.. uniform, even if she looked like a sheep who had been standing out in the rain. Her tail swept behind her, tapping the bookcase beside her before she remembered where she was, and settled it before she made a mess.
It sure was getting boring just standing around alone.
Just as she was about to take a step off, someone suddenly appeared before her. The mare startled, jumping back a little in surprise. She would never get used to others popping out from behind corners, whether she was in a building or out in the ocean. She opened her mouth to apologize, but found herself staring instead. Her head tipped to the side as she gave the stranger a glance, ears pricked forward and brows arched. He sure was a gangly thing, not to mention, incredibly tall. She found herself tipping her head up just to meet his eyes, only to find his sharp green staring right back. She quickly pulled her gaze away, admiring his dark dappled coat and messy, streaked hair. She felt her face warm, hoping he didnt notice.
Her attention snapped back to his face when he started speaking, his voice deep against the silence of the library. It took her a moment to process what he had said, but her gaze followed his as he looked to the sign that hung above her. Her head tipped in curiosity, and perhaps slight confusion, but a smile busted its way onto her lips.
"How does one get lost in a library?" She teased, her tone soft and playful. She glanced at the books to her right out of the corner of her eye, biting her lip as she squinted at the swooping letters. Oh.. if only she knew what they meant! Surely, though, he wouldn't have asked where it was if the sign above her was this A he spoke of.
Stepping closer to the stallion, but only to peer down the row of bookcases and signs, the mare flicked her ears to the side and shook her head. "I guess we will have to go find this A section of yours." She added, stepping back and offering a lopsided grin. "Maybe you passed it on your way in?" Ears back forward with determination, the little mare marched right past him, her hooves tapping loudly against the hard floor.
"My name's Briny, whats yours?" She introduced herself, pausing only to glance over her shoulder to speak.

Kristofer
He was still inwardly smacking himself for what had spilled out of his mouth only moments before, like he had lost all of his sense. I got lost in a library. Who got lost in a library?? Kristofer pressed his lips together in slight embarrassment when the mare teased him, but that embarrassment melted away as he watched her mannerisms. She was glancing away, long lashes nearly touching her cheeks as she looked to the side, he assumed at all of the books that sat on heavy pine shelves. The way she bit her lip only made his mind direct itself towards her lips, and her wondered momentarily what it would be like to kiss her.
His attention was snapped back when her voice broke the silence - although he hadn’t noticed much of a silence, with the ringing in his ears. “I guess we will have to go find this A section of yours.” The smile that followed nearly brought Kristofer to his knees begging her to go out with him, but that would’ve been ridiculous… and really desperate. “Maybe you passed it on your way in?”
Kristofer’s glances back up to the wooden sign with the fancy letter on it. Could she not read? He knew his father hadn’t thought reading all that important, after all what all were books for other than filling foals’ heads with stories? But Kris had enjoyed it from the moment his mother placed Argus’ Silly Caudron before him as a small child. That book had filled his childhood with fun stories and an escape from the drama that was growing up with Selora. But what if the mare just hadn’t seen the sign? Either way, his eyes were too busy following her as she walked past him. Her scent wafted under his nose, and he breathed in deeply, but not quite deeply enough to where she could hear him. She smelled of saltwater and sweet seaweed, which made his stomach growl a bit. He hadn’t eaten seaweed since he was a kid, and it was by far his favorite snack.
His head followed her, his hooves soon following suit as he stepped towards her. “I am uh, Kristofer, it’s nice to meet you.” Wow, he sounded drab and dorky. Perhaps he could recover with asking about her. “So, uh. Do you come here often?” Oh gods, what a winner.

Long ears flicked as she heard his hooves fall in step behind her, her beaming smile somehow becoming brighter. She enjoyed making new friends, especially ones as handsome as him. While she wasnt sure if this friendship would continue outside of the library, it would be a joy while it lasted. As he mentioned his name, she played it over in her mind so she wouldnt forget, but she knew she would anyways. No matter how many times she would remind herself, she knew she would have to ask again by the end of the day.
"Nice to meet you too." She chirped. "I am terrible with names, though, so i will probably have to ask for it again later.." Her voice trailed off as her head ducked into another row of books, but she was not sure what letter these were too. However, she did recognize a title, and it didnt sound like it started with an A. They had better keep going.
“So, uh. Do you come here often?” She paused as he spoke again, her ears flicking to the side ever so slightly as she glanced back to look at him. For a moment, she got distracted by his vibrant green eyes, fixated on her as he awaited an answer. She didnt think the question was dumb, but oh how it was hard to answer, especially when she was pretending to help him find a book.
"I uh.." For once, the social mare was at a loss for words. This was awfully strange. "No, I'm not much of a book worm." There, that wasnt so obvious, right? Silence fell between the pair as she glanced up at the sign over her head. She could either drag him around all day while she pretended to know what she was looking for, or she could tell the truth. On one hand, it would mean spending more time with the stallion.. who's name had already slipped her mind. But on the other, it would be wasting his time.
A sigh broke her lips as she dipped her head in slight embarrassment. "Actually, im not one at all.. I was never taught how to read." In attempt to save face, she continued to ramble. "I do like stories though! Sometimes i get lucky and someone here is willing to share what theyre reading with me." And now she sounded like a foal. "I find it all very interesting." An awkward smile found her lips as she ran her hoof across the ground. She attempted to avoid eye contact, but found it difficult with his stunning green gaze drawing her back in.
