"We know what we are,
but know not what we may be."
......
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap-
"Jade, my love. Please stop tapping your hooves. You're driving me crazy with your antsy energy. I know your excited, but please redirect that energy towards doing something else instead of needless tapping."
Pausing mid tap, Jade turned her head sheepishly towards her mother's obvious reprimand. A big smile broke out on her face, her obvious excitement about something showing. "I can't help it momma! Dad's coming home finally!" Turning back to the window outside, she watched as the droplets collected on the pane of glass stretched out in front of her.
The day had started off with a slight overcast, hinting the possibility of rain later on. Her mother had informed her yesterday that it would be raining today; but that didn't diminish her excitement at all. In fact, Jade loved stormy weather! She was born on a stormy spring day, so what better way to welcome back her father than with her favorite weather. It was almost as if the gods were working in her favor!
"I can't wait to see him momma! I have all kinds of questions for him. Like who did he meet? What kind of wares did he sell this time? Was the trip difficult? Easy? OH! How did he-"
"Jade, hush now. Instead of chattering my ear off with endless questions, help me find my telescope so I can get a better prediction for the weather." her mother interrupted, praying to Kaia to not run out of patience for her overly curious daughter.
It'd been months since Jade had last seen her father. As each day passed, the young mare tracked how many days until her father would return home. As the final day came closer and closer, the more Jade's excitement rose for her fathers arrival. When she wasn't tracking the days left, Jade spent her time aiding her mother while she worked as a Weather Witch. Doing so, Jade's bond with her mother grew stronger and she soaked all the knowledge about weather that came along with assisting her mother.
But in Jade's eyes, her father was the most knowledgeable horse in the whole world. The fact that he traveled outside of the frozen tundra she knew like the front of her hooves, fascinated her. He was an endless encyclopedia of information, and Jade thirsted for it constantly. Through him, Jade learned all about the world of Hireath. She knew of The hedonistic Aodhians, Reserved Briemiens, Friendly Serorans, and even a little about the elusive Talorians! Her father told her all about where they lived, going into great detail with Briem and Aodh, as he visted those herds frequently. Jade also learned of each herds patron god; the fiery Ignacio, humble Argus, mighty Alya, and forgiving Cascade. It was absolutely thrilling knowing all of this!
Jade's father also had a knack for story-telling. Every time Diego came back from a trip, he would always spin a tale for his beloved daughter about it all. He knew exactly how to appease Jade's curiosity, after years of watching his daughter grow between his trips. No matter if he had traveled back to the same herd, he could always whip out a new story or knowledge for his little girl. Jade couldn't wait until he got here. If he didn't come sooner, there was a possibility that she could explode from all the excitement!
As Jade picked through their house, which was a complete mess, she hummed a happy tune to keep her mouth busy from chattering too much. As she walked into the parlor, she decided that her best bet would be plucking through the massive piles of pillows her family had collected over time. Sifting through them energetically, Jade tossed the pillows aside haphazardly in her search for the telescope. After a few more pillows, she finally found what her mother's telescope.
"Jade!" Her mother called out, soft thudding sounds of items being dropped on the ground accompanying it. "Have you found it yet?"
Gripping the telescope with her icy blue telekinesis, she shouted back at her mother. "I found it momma! It was under the pillows in the parlor!"
"Oh good! I'll be there in a minute..." She paused, as more loud thuds resounded in the other room. "Once I clean up this mess."
Content after finding her mother's telescope, Jade took the chance to glance outside. To her surprise, there was a figure heading towards their house. A gleeful scream let itself out of Jade's mouth; her father was here! Scrambling to her mother in the other room, she nearly bowled over her mother as she wasn't expecting her to be right before the door frame.
"Good heavens child, what has gotten into you?" her mother sighed, becoming weary of her daughters erratic actions.
"Momma! Dad's here! I saw him outside!" she blurted, bouncing up and down. Not even waiting for her mothers response, Jade darted past her mother to the front door and swung it wide open; eyes full of hope and excitement.
But instead of her father, a horse she'd never seen before was at her doorstep. Feeling her mother come up behind her on the side, Jade cocked her head to the side confused.
"Who are you?"

M U I R I S never trust a survivor until you know what he did to stay alive His hooves were heavy, his joints aching from the walk. His eyes stung in the cool breeze, causing him to squint and dip his head, his forelock blowing in his face. It was obvious that the stallion had been crying, from the red in his eyes to the tear stains on his cheeks. It was times like this that he knew he was not suited for his rank. A Raider didnt cry, and Raider didnt show his feelings.. yet here he was, his heart breaking for a loss that wasnt even his.
He paused in his journey, wind tugging at his thick mane. In the distance, he could see the home of the merchant's family. A small steam of smoke billowed over its rooftop, probably from a fireplace. His gaze shifted to the sky, smiling softly at the dark clouds that had started to gather, threatening rain, but not giving it quite yet. Muiris loved the stormy weather; it was cleansing, in a way, and relaxing. Too bad it would give him such relief now.
Pulling his gaze back to the house, the stallion tried his best to regain his composure. He pulled at the edge his cloak, hesitating only for a moment before squeezing his eyes shut and pressing it to them, letting out a soft sigh as eyes burned in protest. He then rubbed the fabric on his cheeks, ruffling his thick coat to remove all signs of the tears that had once streamed down his face. He dropped the cloak back to his side and closed his eyes, taking in a deep breath before stepping forward.
Waiting would only make this harder.
Forcing a smile on his face was useless, so the stallion settled on a neutral expression. His lips pressed together, ears shifted forward, and gaze as soft as he could manage. As he approached the door, his ears flicked at the sound of muffled thuds and chattering voices. His eyes narrowed ever so slightly in curiosity. What was happening in there? Before he was able to peek through a window and check, the door was flung open and he was met face-to-face with a bright eyed young mare, excitement obvious in her eyes.
Muiris took a step back, his eyes widening ever so slightly. They hadnt told him the merchant had a daughter, though that was probably kept a secret in order to make sure he didnt bail. His gaze shifted from the filly to an older mare, whom he assumed was the merchant's wife, as she came up behind the child.
"U-uh." The stallion stammered, shuffling his hooves in order to get back in a more.. presentable stance. He tried his best to avoid eye contact with the daughter, looking first toward the mother. Was he supposed to just give them the news? Ask how they're doing first? Perhaps to be invited in? His mind spun in a million different directions, allowing silence to fall between the trio momentarily.
"M-my name is Muiris, I'm a raider." He finally introduced himself with a dip of his head, his windblown forelock falling over his eyes before he flicked it out of the way. Introducing himself as such a rank still felt silly on his tongue. He was no raider; just another body to throw into a fight if needed. He cleared his throat before taking back the step forward that he had retreated earlier, licking his lips nervously. "Would you mind if i come in?" While he didnt think he was supposed to do this, from what he could tell, the mother and daughter were the only ones here. They would probably want some.. comfort.. if thats what he could call himself, anyways.
He dipped his head as the mother nodded and stepped out of the way, pulling her daughter aside as well. Warmth washed across the stallion's pelt as he stepped through the door. He could feel their eyes on him as he glanced around the home, but he struggled to find his words.
"I-Im not here on good terms, unfortunately." He finally spoke up, turning back toward the pair. He paused to take in a breath, gathering his emotions and attempting to keep them together. "I've received word that your husband," His gaze fixated on the mare, refusing to look toward the filly for the sake of keeping himself together, "w-will not be returning home."
He couldnt say the words, he couldnt tell them he was dead. "Im so sorry." He added with a quiet whisper, his ears flopping to the side as he tried to hold back the tears that threatened behind his eyes.
