Greer [ post # - || word count: - ] |
Greer pulled her thick blue cloak tighter against her body, the biting winds nipping at her. She has always been jealous of those who grew thick winter coats themselves and did not need a cloak to keep them warm. Unfortunate for her, she had been born with a thin grey coat that hardly grew any more in the winter then it did in the summer, though they were still mild in Onea. Hey, at least she didnt shed. Unlike Meera, her snow leopard who plodded next to her.
The big cat looked up at her owner, opening her mouth and letting out a silent meow. Greer had learned that this meant she wanted to go hunt, so she nodded and off the familiar went, bounding into the grey woods she would blend into perfectly. Greer halted, looking around her. This seemed as good of a place as any. The small clearing had a beam of sunlight illuminating it and the grass was dry rather then wet and slippery.
Greer unstrapped the dummy she had tied to her back, sticking it into the dirt and making sure it wouldnt fall over. Glancing around, she could sense no other presence except the birds flying from tree to tree. So, she pulled her shiny new dagger from it sheeath which was little more than a piece of leather fastened to her leg with a belt.
Greer smiled, twirling it a few times before testing the burlap and hay dummy, plunging the sharp blade through the tough material. She removed it and began her exercise, which she was still making up. She had never had a weapon before, unless you count the handle of a broom she had tried to attack bloody flank with. She kicked the dummy, feeling rather foolish before stabbing her blade into it again and sighing with frustration over the fact she had no idea what she was doing.

MADDEN: Madden hadn't travelled much since his leg injury, but he was now keen to roam and explore the lands that now lay before him. He had always enjoyed causing chaos in and around the War Forged herd's territory. They were master warriors though less over privelledged and self righteous than those Aodhian bums. So he once more found himself wandering the open roads, flanked by trees and low snowy slopes for some time. He had managed to stop briefly at an Inn for refreshments and a little looting and felt more replenished than ever. What had caused him some mild concern earlier had been the sight of a big cat bursting out from the trees. Madden had instinctively drawn his throwing knives but upon closer inspection he could tell the animal wasn't entirely wild. With a half sneer he let his ears fall flat and he half reared to warn the animal off. She had retreated into another cluster of trees, and Madden hoped he hadn't misjudged her.
As he walked, easing up on the use of his left fore leg for the sake of Nero's meticulous stitching, he fiddled with his throwing knives. Since his last assignment some two months ago he had hadn't little opportunity to use them and felt he was in need of some release. He stumbled off of the path, heading away from the more heavily populated areas in favour of the ragged farmlands and countryside that offered some smaller sheltered places to train. He found a small enclosed space surrounded by trees and sized them up. His soft ruby teke flickered around the first knife as he held the others around his head like suspended ornaments. He launched the first knife at the tree immediately ahead of him and was a little peeved as it veered upwards too much and lodged in a low branch. He tried this for several more minutes before grumbling to himself about how stupid medicine horses were and that he almost wishes he had bled out.
In a spur of annoyance he threw his knives in quick succession, one ahead and one either side. He heard two thuds and just as he was preparing to launch the third to his left his foreleg buckled and he fell forward as he threw. He lay in the snow for a moment, huffing furiously and looked up. The knife was not lodged in the tree, or indeed in the snow or anywhere in sight. "Shit." He breathed as he got to his feet. His leg felt fine now, but he wondered whether he should have allowed a little more time for it to heal before he went off gallavanting. Either way he was going to find his throwing knife. He stepped away from his clearing and into the trees surrounding it and began to search for the knife feverishly.

Leaning against the dummy, she thought about what to do next. Then, Greer heard a familiar sound. Hooves, flattening snow. That crunching noise. Someone was calming toward her, she flicked her ears to the right. They were close, she knew that much. She took her knife out of the dummy and held it close. She wished that Dawn had come back, but perhaps the snow leopard was on her way back from her morning hunt. Greer decided her best luck would be to stay put, and if the stranger came to her then they did.
She eyed the woods around her, looking at every tree to see if she could see someone peaking out from behind a tree or something. Something...flashing caught her eye. A silver throwing knife sat, half burried in the snow a few feet a way. When did that get there? She wondered, walking over to it and picking it up.

MADDEN: The snow was exceptionally thick in parts, but Madden was soon able to weave through the trees. As he moved his ears flicked back and forth, and though he couldn't hear anything or anyone, he drew out one of his throwing knives and held it arched over his head. Ready for anything. His hooves felt the snow thinning and soon enough the trees themselves were parting to reveal a clearing. To one side there was a training dummy, but more importantly there was another horse. Madden froze, the mare had a knife drawn, holding it close to her, and Madden knew nothing of her skill set. He fixed her with calculating eyes when he saw his throwing knife in her teke.
Momentarily Madden allowed his ruby teke to relax, the throwing knife in his grasp lowering to a less threatening level. "You appear to have my throwing knife, dear." Madden, feeling his cocky confidence flowing back to him strutted a little closer, putting the throwing knife he was holding back in the little leather sheath around his middle. "You doing some training?" He inquired personably, hoping to calm the mare so she didn't hurl his own knife back into his face. He had the distinct impression that she was not a Vagabond, so he was carefully trying to distract her from the fact he was.

Greer looked the stanger up and down, taking him in mentally. He was tall and thin, but muscled. She could tell he knew his way around a fight. He was a few hands larger than her, but she kept her expression calm yet her ears pinned. "Seems i do." She growled, raising an eyebrow. She slowly dug the throwing knife into the dummy, where she could reach it if her dagger didn't do. Sure, she had no idea how to use a throwing knife but a blade was a blade. "And it seems i am. Name?" She ordered. Greer couldn't be sure, but she couldnt place his face and growing up in war-forged, she had met most of the towns people and farmers one way or another and had never seen him. There was only one other thing he could be, a vagabond.

MADDEN: Madden bristled a little at her tone, his ears pinning back as he arched his neck. This little creature was going to interrogate him. He scuffed the snow with a hoof and flicked his tail at her. His knife was stuffed into the dummy and Madden made a mental note of where his daggers were in their sheaths and which would be the easiest to hurl at her. "And it seems i am. Name?" her tone had Madden glaring down his muzzle at her. "Indeed. And hat's it to you?" he was going to leave it there and make a rush for his throwing knife, striking the mare in the process with one already on his person, but he hesitated. With his boyfriend's herd already at war with the War-Forged he decided starting trouble may cause more harm than good. "Madden. Mad with a double 'D' 'en. Need a pen to write that down or are we good?" he watched her carefully for a moment, soft ruby orbs narrowed. The mare appeared to have her own dagger, shiny and fairly new looking. "And how about you?" he inquired slyly, daring to take a step closer, "What's your name, button?"

Madden. It was a suitable name for the clearly mischevious stranger. "No, i dont believe i need to write it down. Though i will log it later when i get back to the villiage." She explained with a sly grin of her own as if to say good luck. As he took a step toward her, she felt heat rise to her face. Button? Did he just call me button? She thought, squinting at him. "Not that i have to tell you, but my name is Greer. Im a valkyrie." There was a threat in her final word. As if to let him know 'i have the training to deal with your type.' It was freezing out and his body warmth drifted closer but she resisted taking a step closer, knowing that with her new position she couldn't behave as she used to.

MADDEN: From his vantage Madden was looking down at the mare. Greer she had said. How quaint. But her reaction to his little tease name, button had been too priceless to simply let slide. She looked nervous and after the mention of Valkyrie Madden pulled up. "A little professional, eh?" he would continue to play off this rank drop but now he knew what he was up against. "Well before you go running off to any villages, what would you say to a friendly spar? I do hope you'll take it easy on me, little button Valkyrie, considering my poor leg and all." Madden lifted his front leg with a mocking pout. As he stood there, his strawberry coat bristling a little in the cold, he could just about imagine Greer tackling him and taking him down. A worthy opponent. But that was not all that was racing through his mind, he looked her up and down briefly, her shiny grey coat and intricate blaze, not to mention her magnificent blue eyes. Madden had to admire her, especially how she stood her ground to him, who was taller with many more battle scars. It was exhilarating.
