NURIKO
Rumors had trickled in. Fleeting whispered words, bubbling upon lips of frightened citizens. It seemed to be the herd had not been at peace, rest, in many days now and Nuriko's own placid calm demeanor was starting to crack. The whispers had become so loud now, that the unicorn could barely believe his ears and what he was hearing. His herd was in a constant state of fright and the least he could do was try to quell something.
He had heard the small hushed words of the Kirin imprisonment call. Of course his mind fluttered to the cream colored Kirin and his fiery red horns. He could not imagine the burning heated words he would be given, should the other be caught. Or the others for that matter. But he had not been the one to give the information on their locations or even the one to give out the order. The high King himself had made the decree. He would have rather been the one to go with the guards and talk to the kirin's, try to be the diplomat rather then capture them by force. Yet instead he had been sent out to deal with what he felt like, was an action a guard could easily look into. But that thinking did not belong here. If this is what was most important right now then this is where he shall be. Plus, he did not want to see the state the Kirin's would be brought in as. It would not be pretty and he wasn't sure he could mentally handle the angry words he knew would be snapped and snarled in his direction... Nuriko had tried after all to befriend them for the herd... His mind could only guess that had not been enough.
Nearly sparkling hooves stood still, completely still beside the cave in question. He was waiting for the few equines that had been granted to him for his aid. The names sounded familiar, remembering briefly that some where a family unit and thus, their togetherness should come in handy should that be needed. Upon his form, the politicians robes where replaced with his cloak and nothing more. Venturing into caves that creaked and groaned where no small laughing matter and to wear anything more then this would most likely hinder should something happen. Lord Argus, nothing should happen today.

Little Bird | Breim | Outsider
Little Bird certainly hadn't expected to be here of all places when she and Arges had left home that afternoon. She'd expected to get their errands done and then to return home where she could cook supper for her family, but now, here she stood in front of an abandoned mine shaft where apparently locals had been complaining of an odd noise coming from within. With the guards in high demand as they searched for all of the kirins currently living in Sirith, citizens had been selected to help out with the situation. Little Bird didn't mind though. It gave her the chance to prove herself a little more since, as an Outsider, she was mostly not trusted, and it gave her a little bit of the thrill she used to get when she went on missions as a Vindicator. The thrill of not knowing what was around the corner or what danger could be making the caves creak and groan was enough to keep her going, but it also made her anxious. She was not the single, childless reckless hero that she was as a vindicator. She was now a mother of two beautiful daughters who was married to the husband of her dreams. Of course, there was Arges as well who she practically considered a child of her own as well and knowing that he was going in there with them inside this potentially deadly cave had her mind and heart racing.
If she couldn't keep him from going though, she was certainly not going to leave his side. Every time she heard the cave let out a menacing growl or loud creak, the pegasus mare moved closer to him, ready to pounce if any danger darted out of the dark depths. Her brown eyes turned toward Arges as the last of their little group was arriving. "Arges, I want you to stick close to me. I don't know what's making those noises, but it can't be good." Little Bird said just loud enough for Arges to hear while her mouth formed a worried line.

Arges | Driven
The last thing Arges wanted was to be away from home. His head had been spinning since receiving that blessing and trying to understand it was harder than any book he'd ever read. That warm feeling in his chest made him jumpy, on edge. Desperately wanting to keep it smothered, any time someone addressed him, the young scientist wondered if they knew. Quiet behavior was no new trait, but those closest would know the candle lit in the study was odd indeed. When he'd been called to investigate and old mine shaft, along with Little Bird, he tried prodding for more information. As an astronomer, being asked to travel farther from the sky required a good reason. But, he went. Worried that further stressing on the subject would have an effect on the growing fire within.
"Arges, I want you to stick close to me. I don't know what's making those noises, but it can't be good."
Arges stared over at Little Bird and nodded subtly, his flat expression bordering on worried. The pigeon perched high in his mane cooed quietly as if to "shush" them. As it nestled back in to form a peaceful ball of feathers, Arges felt more relieved. A pigeon wasn't usually the first animal to come to mind as an emotional support, but Oliver did the job better than anything. He tried not to focus on the sounds. They weren't good sounds. The more he heard them, the more he wanted the world to go silent, like the void.

NURIKO
As the two other equines arrived at the beginning of the cave, they did nothing to acknowledge his presence or even look at him. Instead they muttered to themselves and the unicorn, taking this as high offense, did nothing to hide the double edged look he gave them as blue eyes narrowed. With a small breath, to keep his emotions calm, the stallion gestured towards the tunnel. Little bird was an outsider of course, so to expect her to know customs and the proper way to great those of higher rank was slightly excusable. But Arges? The Driven should know better, even being from the new generations, manners should not have been lost. Nuriko's expectations of these two was now exceptionally low.
No matter, with a low voice the roan equine started forward. "Lets go. Eowen knows the caves well, so I expect him to meet up with us." If they even bothered to show. The Kings guide moved forward, ears swiveling to listen in front and behind. The small lantern he had brought with him was not meant for the three of them but since he was the only one with a light, it seemed, he would have to lead the way. Lord Argus, just what sort of help had his high king gifted him with? "Keep your steps light and make sure to keep your weight even. Voices low, we don't need any high notes or loud sounds setting anything off." The unicorn's voice was curt but even in the echos of the caves his steps barely made a sound. Keeping his head even, Lantern held perfectly at the right height, Nuriko continued forward. He'd been in unstable caves before, so he knew how important it was to be cautious.

Little Bird | Breim | Outsider
Only once Little Bird was sure that she was to protect the Driven stallion beside her did she turn to face the King's Guide that they had been asked to meet at the mouth of the cave. She had been too worried about Arges to recall the Breimian customs until that moment, and she silently cursed herself. Being an Outsider, she was constantly trying to show herself worthy of trust, but it seemed this time she had missed her chance and, from the look of slight disgust and frustration on the roan unicorn's face, he was definitely mad about their rudeness. There was no time to fret however, and Little Bird found it much more beneficial to focus on the task at hand.
The roan mare offered him a nod of her head at his command, making sure not to keep eye contact with him for too long as they walked toward the opening of the dark cave. "Yes, sir." She responded quietly and politely, trying her best to ease Nuriko's mood. It might be a long time that they were all together, and she definitely didn't want to spend hours in awkward silence.
Little Bird didn't have much experience with caves and the underground aside from what she had learned during her visits with Diony before they had been married. She was used to wide open spaces and the comfort of knowing that she could always take to the sky if danger would ever find its way to her, but here in this creaking, unstable cave, she was starting to feel claustrophobic. Instead of showing her panic, though, the pegasus showed only a tough exterior, her eyes scanning through the darkness around them for any signs of danger.
Her ears flicked toward Nuriko as he spoke, and Little Bird nodded her head. "You seem like you know a lot about unstable caves. Have old mine shafts like this been a problem recently?" She asked, making sure that her voice wasn't too loud in the echoing cavern.

Arges | Driven
He wasn't focused, how could he be? That nagging flame had him looking in different directions and not on the King's Guide in front of him. When the unicorn spoke, Arges felt his gut go cold. Just the tone alone made a crash course of everything he forgot to do come to mind. It was too late to bow his head, but the Driven still hung his head down, ashamed of his own behavior. His eyes never met the Guide's before he turned to the cave.
Arges tried to take even breaths as they walked. They were venturing further from what was known, at least to him. His stomach churned thinking of how he couldn't possibly be living up to Diony's praises. His friend spoke so well of him that he felt pressure to actually perform great feats in the presence of others. Arges felt sick having been non-verbally shut down so fast. The pigeon nesting his mane preened its feathers and "cooed" periodically almost in time with shaky breaths. Arges let Little Bird do the talking. He feared if he spoke that the walls would come crashing down around them. ---------- Word Count - 191 sorry for the tiny posts aahhhh

NURIKO
It was easy for the stallion to feel comfortable in these caves. He had grown up exploring quite a few treacherous ones and understood that each cave needed respect and caution, even if it was stead fast and secure. Anything could happen in the blink of an eye. A single ear swiveled in Little Birds direction, Letting out a hard almost heavy sigh. "Not recently. Most of the Mines we don't know much about are blocked off until we have time to safely explore them. I've been through the ins and outs of these types of caves before so... Take heed and watch every step."
It was then when the noises inside the cave stopped almost abruptly. Nuriko paused, head lifting as he turned his head slightly from side to side. Ears shifted and turned quickly, trying to figure out what was happening.
Crying.
Soft and timid sobs wafted towards the group, the sound similar to that of a lost or hurt foal.
Nuriko lowered his head and flared his nostrils, trying to get a scent or any sort of baring on the situation. There was no way a Foal could be this far in... "Little Bird... What does that sound like to you?" He asked softly, clearly not being around children often and was unaccustomed to their sounds. His hooves slowly picked back up, walking cautiously towards what appeared to be a widening in the walls and cave itself.
As the group entered the larger space, a tiny figure would be curled up in the center. The source of the noise. It's silhouette looked to be exactly what the sound suggested and as the King's Guide rose the lantern higher, the figure was revealed. A lone foal lay on the floor, tears streaming down their face. Large stones where scattered around them and their back legs seemed hidden behind one of them. Where they trapped?

[Eowan | Miner]
The light of the miner's lantern wobbled across the stark stone walls outside of the city. The further he got, the more dull the surfaces seemed to grow, but he knew of the secrets that the rough exterior held beneath. Bright light flashed against a damp strip of rock where water trickled down, creating a soft bubbling sound. Sound, it seemed, was exactly the source of why he had ventured out here in the first place. He was late, of course. His hip had been bothering him since he first woke up that morning, and trying to hurry down some abandoned mine shaft wasn't helping him any. The lantern shifted frequently ahead of him, surrounded by a soft, rich amber glow that seemed to twitch with every other step the stallion took. His gait was pained, hurried as he followed the relatively fresh scent of what he thought he recognized as the three he was supposed to be with.
Good thing they waited for him. No, he supposed he couldn't be too bitter. If there were strange sounds coming from the tunnels, it could mean any number of things, and had to be investigated. Tunnel collapses were the first thing that came to his mind, areas that had been picked through treacherously soft rock or areas that had been slowly worn away through frequent use. All it took was one word too loud, one misplaced step, one shifted support; the whole thing would go down before you even heard the crack. His withers twitched at the old, haunting thought. Eowan shook his mane, attempting to set aside the memory in place for more calming company.
It seemed like another age before he finally heard the sounds of voices up ahead. He'd heard the voice of the King's Guide only in passing, never having met him. The others...he wasn't too sure who they were. Their voices were hushed to a whisper. The dark stallion slowed his stride as to quite his hoofsteps, growing nearer now. It seemed for now that the scene was peaceful, but if they had come upon something dangerous, he didn't want to startle whatever it was into an attack by blundering up to the group.
His ears pricked forwards, his expression cautiously curious when he heard Nuriko ask one of their companions what they thought of the sound. A voice, he thought. It was a common sound to the seasoned miner, having spent a fair amount of time in the tunnels throughout his years. He sometimes came upon lost members of the herd, and foals were among the most frequent. The poor child sounded young, and frightened.
"I apologize for missing you earlier," Eowan murmured under his breath as he came upon the group. He bowed his head steeply towards the King's Guide, hopeful that the crane of his neck would make up for the lack of a bent hoof. His hip throbbed at this point, an unfortunate circumstance that he hoped would fade away. The others he barely tilted his head towards - he had no knowledge of them and held no opinion towards the pair. The dark stallion glanced over the scene before them. It seemed clear to him that the foal was a victim of circumstance - lost in the darkness and caught by a rockfall. His heart ached for the young thing. "Why we still standing here?" he snorted gruffly. "We should move the stones, make sure that they're okay."

Little Bird | Breim | Outsider
Little Bird listened intently to what Nuriko told her about the unstable caves he had dealt with in the past, absorbing the information for future use if need be. It was interesting that there hadn't been any recent activity in the undergrounds around the city to suggest any possible cave-ins and then, all of a sudden, to have one sprout out of no where. Maybe it was just her inexperience with this strange, underground world, but it seemed very odd that a mineshaft that had been stable for so long would suddenly decide to start creaking and groaning like it was about to fall apart. Questions bubbled inside of her head, but from his dismissive tone, she guessed he didn't want to really continue talking, so instead, she allowed her thoughts and ideas go unspoken and set her brown eyes toward the darkness ahead of them.
She could tell that Arges was feeling more and more distressed by the way he was making an effort to control his breaths, and she tried to offer him a reassuring smile, but without calling attention to him that she knew he didn't want, it was impossible to get his attention. Despite the pang of guilt that she felt over not being able to help him, Little Bird pressed onward. The only way to really help was to complete this mission as quickly and safely as possible.
The noises inside the cave were almost deafening, and she was starting to find it hard to concentrate when all of a sudden everything was silent. Then a unmistakable sound reached her ears. It was... crying? Little Bird felt her body go rigid as she fought the urge to run full throttle further into the cave until she found the poor child whose sobs could be heard echoing off the walls. "It sounds like a foal crying. We have to find it." She felt her motherly instincts kick in, and she pushed forward cautiously.
The tunnel opened up into a larger cavern, and laying in the center of the large space, a small foal lay crying as a large stone weighed down its back legs. The pegasus mare gasped and trotted over to the young foal just as the last member of their group arrived alongside them. The Outsider offered the young foal a comforting smile and wrapped one of her russet-colored wings on its side. "You'll be alright, little one. We'll take you back to your home. I'm sure your parents are worried sick about you." Little Bird cooed, using her telekinesis to wipe the foal's tears away. "I'll make sure the foal is okay if you all can move the boulder off of their legs." She said to the rest of the group, her eyes looking over at them momentarily before returning to the foal beside her.

Arges | Driven
Of course, there was always a reason something made him nervous. Before, the noises were scary, because they were unknown. Now that the child has been relieved as the source, fear was replaced by loneliness. He wasn't told of any reports of a missing child, making the feeling worse. Arges could remember back on the surface, how he used to flee from the tormentors into the crops and wait, alone, till the sun would set. But, the sky was always open on the surface. The birds, grass, and the Sun made sure he was never truly alone. He couldn't imagine what it felt like in the tunnels, to be without the open sky, totally alone.
Nearing the foal, the stallion couldn't tell if their legs were being crushed by the stone, or merely trapped. He remembered reading about horses becoming ill after a weight being removed from a limb that had been crushed or lost blood flow for a number of hours. Medicine wasn't his field of interest at all, so if this crush illness were the case, he'd be of no actual help. Curses to being only book smart. Still, he had no knowledge of how long the child had been trapped.
Arges moved up toward the large stone, keeping an eye on Little Bird and the foal. He pointed with his muzzle to the foal. "Perch" he said quietly, giving Oliver a command to move down to the foal. If he were going to be dealing with a huge rock, he'd rather the bird stay away from it. The Driven focused in on the foal's thoughts, using the telepathy he'd been born with to not directly engage in conversation, but to try and listen through the sobbing. Given the child's distressed state, this would likely not be easy.

NURIKO
Nuriko approached after the rest of the group rushed forward. His eyes and ears took in the cavern and the integrity. Why where there such large stones directly in the center of the room?
The foal pressed close to little bird as she all but circle around them with her body. The little creature rubbed her face against the neck, soaking in the warmth as if they where cold. Which they where in fact. Colder then they should have been. The rock was large and it looked to be pinning their legs, or at least their tail to the ground. It was a terrifying scene none the less. The foal was so young!
Yet, as Arges licked at the 'foals' mind, time would seem to stop. His blessing would touch on nothing, inciting instead a scream that ripped from the foals mouth. In moments the body was rigid, the foal going stiff legged and their hide lengthened, becoming dense and bushy. Nose grew, teeth morphing and shifting into fangs as ears turned triangle like. Within those time quenching moments what had once been a foal was now a Kitsune, swirling around Arges and Little bird. Long bush like tails moved as if they where an entity all in themselves and it's predatory face seemed to grow from nothing, encompassing both of their vision. Teeth bared and a different sound, one of mischief and malice rocked the very walls and floor the four equines where housed in.
The scream tore through each creature as if they where transparent, non existent and vibrated around the room. The roof crumbled, small stones falling at first before more dust clouded the space. It grinned, showing deadly fangs before the two in the center, it's breath hot and wet before it vanished in the blink of an eye.
Nuriko's heart had seemed to stop, his blood going cold before heat rushed through him. A rock, larger then a cup fell on his rear end and jolted him forward. Hooves skidded on stone and only then did he hear the groaning and waning of the walls and roof around them.
"MOVE, NOW!" The king's Guide bellowed, bumping Eowan forward as he recognized the warning sounds of a cave in. The roof where the 'foal' had been started to crumble quickly and it appeared the only safe way was forward through the tunnel dead ahead. The Guide was clearly rocked and was doing his best to get everyone moving as past memories stole his vision frequently.

Little Bird | Breim | Outsider
Little Bird felt the foal drift closer to her, pressing its body underneath her wing. She nearly shivered from the sudden cold touch of the foal's pelt against her and gave them a worried look. They were colder than she had ever felt someone be, and it triggered something inside of her mind, a sense that something wasn't quite right. From her past experiences, the ex-Vindicator never failed to listen to her intuition. Her talent of perception was normally never wrong, and when she felt like something wasn't quite right, more times than not it wasn't. Perhaps, after months of being out of practice, her inkling of doubt was wrong this time though. After all, how could a foal this young and little have any tricks up their sleeves?
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Arges concentrate on the foal, using his blessing to try and hear their thoughts. Almost as soon as Arges started to show any signs of confusion, the foal's body went rigid, and Little Bird felt its pelt becoming larger and growing thick fur. She jumped to her hooves quickly, backpedaling until she was side by side with Arges. A shocked expression appeared on her face as she was now face to face with a beast she had only ever heard about in legends: a kitsune. She snorted in the fox-like creature's pointed face as it gave them a wicked grin before disappearing into thin air.
With the surprise and shock of the kitsune, Little Bird hadn't heard the growing sound of rumbling and groaning that the walls around them were making until a sharp rock dropped from above and landed in between her eyes, creating a gash that was already dripping blood. As she heard Nuriko's shout, the pegasus mare propelled herself forward, tucking her wings close against her sides. Concentrating despite the throbbing pain from the cut on her face, she created two large, red force fields above her and turned her head to yell at the others beside her. "Stick close to me! I can keep most of the rocks from falling on us!"

NURIKO
Hooves leapt forward, cutting against the stones and ignoring those that fell upon his form. His cloak became ripped and torn but he cared little about the fabric. It was a garment, something that could be repaired and made better. Muscles surged through the unicorn driving him to the safety of Little Bird's red semi opaque shields above them. Once he was in the small tunnel, the King's Guide made sure to edge himself forward, looking back to make sure all four forms where following. With heart racing the darkness around them crept in, swallowing all light. He couldn't even see the stones he tripped over.
When the shaking of the walls finally stopped, he coughed over the dust that had been pushed into the tunnel. "Sound off. One! He needed to make sure 3 other voices followed his own, so that even if they where injured at least all of them where alive.
While straining to walk, stumbling and tripping a faint glow finally lit up his vision. Around the corner and another the glow only grew. Legs shook, wanting nothing more then light right now and something larger then the tunnel that lapped and bit at their sides from how tight it was. After one more slight turn the tunnel fell away, relieving a much larger cavern then the one the 'foal' at been. The walls looked to have been met with pickaxes before, the indents and smooth lines knowledge to Eowans eyes. Yet, the walls themselves seemed to glow, littered with so many glowing gems that it also looked like the stars outside in the night sky.
Nuriko paused, eyes wide as he took in the beauty that surrounded him. Everywhere he looked the cavern glowed. Large, small, even enormous crystals met their eyes as the King's Guide stumbled forward. All of them where washed in the blue and purple glow. Each of them looked almost ethereal in the space they had stumbled into. As if the gods had blessed this very ground, the walls, even the ceilings. It took the unicorn a moment to gather himself and walk forward.
As they ventured further into the ever growing path, Nuriko suddenly stopped dead in his tracks. It looked like he had just seen a ghost and to him, he should have been. Before him, stretched from wall to ceiling to wall, was a large fischer. It seemed to have cracked and grown, stretching up above them as if they where standing on the ceiling staring down into a black void through it. How could this be here and not be documented... With a small head shake the unicorn swallowed past a dry throat. "Please tell me I'm not imagining this... Someone else tell me what you see..."

Arges | Driven
As Arges reached into the foals mind he couldn't help but feel uneasy. Uneasy about the silence. Never before had he found a mind so silent and it seemed to cut back at him like a hot knife. He pushed harder at it, surely making his presence known in the child's head. Suddenly, when the foal's body seized up and the scream ripped through the air, Arges let out a scream of his own. His focus, so abruptly disturbed turned to terror. The foal... creature's scream pierced through his ears and mind, throwing him off kilter. Scrambling toward the roan pegasus he knew, he called out desperately to reassure his friends were there.
"Oliver! Little Bird!" His screams torn at his own throat as he almost collided with Little Bird, who had also begun moving in his direction. The dusty red and white pigeon had fluttered back up to his head and was squeaking wildly. His own control lost, fire licked up from his hooves and up his legs. Wide, yellow eyes remained on the kitsune up until it vanished into thin air, its terrible shriek still ringing in the back of his mind.
Sparks kicked up randomly from the Driven's hooves as they hurried into darkness, everything growing more quiet, yet safer. Arges walked close to Little Bird's side, shivering with a catatonic stare. They stopped and the King's Guide started counting off, but Arges couldn't find his voice. The soft glow of smoldering dirt grew with each shaky inhale and dimmed with every ragged breath out. His head felt light and funny. The Driven exhibited a subtle rocking motion that followed his breathing. He stared forward at the fissure in an outwardly blank stupor. To the eye he seemed unaware of anything, but his mind was racing, screaming even. The void before them pulled at his thoughts. He could feel the fire around his heart flood up his throat and into his brain. He thought of the voidscape from the temple and of Ignacio. The swaying motion grew more apparent and the brown scientist had bumped against Little Bird's side. Eyes finally blinking, he squeaked in a scared, childlike tone. "I want to go home."

Little Bird | Breim | Outsider
Little Bird felt heart-wrenching terror as the walls of the cave crumbled around them, falling in great heaps with a crashing sound that was louder than any thunder she had ever heard before. The sound itself seemed to have a crushing weight on her, and with each step she took, she felt her muscles tense in anticipation of one of the large boulders to overpower her shields and crush her under its massive weight. She almost let her mind lose against the panic that wanted to overwhelm her, to make her weak and feeble and probably very dead, but she steeled herself at the sound of Arges's shouts pierced her ears before the kitsune disappeared without a trace. She couldn't let herself become weak, couldn't let herself forget all the years she had endured her Vindicator training. She was a warrior, and she was going to make damned sure that everyone in her group made it out of this cursed tunnel.
She grunted with effort each time a boulder collided with her force fields, fighting to keep them intact, but even with them keeping the larger rocks from falling on their heads, some slipped through the barrier. The roan mare ground her teeth at the feeling of hot blood dripping down her pelt from the sharp rocks that had landed on her, slicing her skin open as easily as if she were made of butter. Her nostrils flared in anger and determination, and she focused her emotions on the shields above their heads.
As suddenly as the cavern had started to cave in, everything fell still and silent around them, and Little Bird sighed with relief as she let go of her force fields, panting from the effort of keeping them up against the force of the boulders and from running for her life. "Sound off! One!" She heard the King's guide shout, and the Outsider took a shaky breathe to respond. "Arges and I are over here." Little Bird replied, not daring to even shout after what had just occurred.
Her gaze was fixed on the fissure ahead of them for split seconds before she mumbled a curse under her breathe. "Oh for Hireath's sake." Her voice was layered with tiredness and fear at the massive crack in the ceiling above them. It was as if they were looking into up into one of the skylights, but instead of clear skies above them, there was only thousands of pounds of rock ready to fall on them. "I see destruction and chaos waiting to be released," was all she managed to say as she felt her body quiver in shock and terror. This fissure meant their home might no longer be safe.
Her brown eyes flickered over to Arges as she felt him bumped against her, and a look of concern flashed across her face watching him sway back and forth, his eyes staring ahead of him but seeing nothing. "I want to go home." Her heart broke, and the pegasus mare gently draped one of her russet wings across the brown stallion's back, gently pulling him closer to her. "We're going home. I'm taking you home."
