Doev
Doev had followed a trail of whispers all afternoon; tier by tier, he had followed the vibrations on the gossamer strands in the Breimian spider web of gossip, and a minute ago, he considered the possibility that the trail had gone cold. It was then that serendipity provided its remedy when two miners meandered through on that narrow street on the periphery of Nariah, their passage marked with the buzz of hushed conversation. ‘ Damned beast,’ hissed the elder of the stallions through smoke-yellowed teeth, ‘ how do they suppose we’re going to support our families when the foreman is forced to call us in every time that creature comes wandering around?’ Doev turned a predatory ear at once. ‘ Someone tried to pelt it with stones, I’ve heard; it won’t be skulking around for much longer should it have any sense.’ The younger stallion stated with a cruel note of amusement that elicited an irritable narrow to his pale bronze eye; Doev marked the miners to memory and logged away that small note for a later time. His single eye returned to the merchant behind the stall he had been perusing. “ Never mind the tubers,” Doev corrected the merchant with a terse smile; “ I’ll have two persimmons and a pomegranate.” He paid, then wrapped the three fruits in a linen kerchief and continued on his course. The dead end street opened into a dim expanse where Doev could make out the minimal lighting of a mining outpost that was situated on the very brink between civilization and the dark, honeycombed underworld of the Labyrinth. This once industrious mining outpost had been rendered into a ghost town, the once steady cogs of progress frozen in time as a testament to the quick evacuation of the resident workers; the kirin had been as effective and alarming as a dying bird in a mine. After a brief stroll amongst the neat mounds of ores, Doev had at last caught sight of the kirin, and he came a measured distance closer, knowing his iron horseshoes announced him. It was just dark enough to conceal and rendered it into a haunting silhouette, one with the oaken branches of lofty tines and the subtle glint of pleated scales. The hair on his neck rose and pressed against the inside of his cloak, and he stepped hard on that instinctive discomfort, his posture, tone, and demeanor poised. “ My name is Doev,” he called out, the stony rasp beneath his voice pronounced from an unnatural volume for the oft softly spoken stallion. “ I am of the King’s Guide. Might we have a word?”

Keiko | Breim | Outsider The darkness had been hard to grow accustomed to especially in her lost and confused state of mind. Everything and everyone seemed to be against her, even herself. Her memory of her past life came in vivid flashes that left her distraught and disoriented, but the more she started to remember, the more she felt like herself again instead of the quiet, odd stranger who had appeared from thin air. She started to remember things about herself that she would have never imagined like the beautiful, bright city that she used to live in and the giant dragons that she used to take care of whenever they were ill or hurt. The scaled equine remembered that she was once a Physician and her years of study slowly began to come back to her as days crawled by, and one of the first things about her past that returned to her were memories of her daughter. She had a little girl somewhere... but Keiko prayed that she hadn't returned with her, not into this cruel, new world.
Keiko learned that her solitude should be loved and enjoyed in the world that she had fallen into. It was a world of hate and distrust. She had tried to be helpful, to show them that she could be something in their society but all these underground... moles had done for her in return was throw stones or shout insults and death threats, so she sat in what appeared to be some sort of mining camp that had been abandoned by the equine of Breim after she had strode into their camp. The mine was terribly dusty and dark. Everything she touched seemed to have an inch of dust and dirt covering its surface but at least there were beds. The miners had left old, creaky bunks behind in one of the small tunnels that they had hallowed out and that was where Keiko spent much of her time. When she wasn't laying in those bunks pondering on what was going to happen to her or going over medical techniques that she had remembered, Keiko wandered the dark tunnels and alleys on the outskirts of the city she had appeared in. Much of her attention was focused on gathering food and water to keep herself alive, after all these heathens weren't about to give her handouts of supplies she needed, but given the opportunity, Keiko grabbed whatever she thought she needed. Most of the things she took were necessities: food, some treats like fruit and candy, canteens of water; however, she also managed to take more amusing and gratifying items such as books, lanterns, and even some herbs that already proved to be useful when that Breimian had thrown a stone at her that scratched her side enough that she had applied herbs and a bandage to it.
Today, her plan was to read some of the books that she had gathered. One of them in particular caught her interest, A History of Hireath. Maybe it would shed some more light on what had happened to the world after her death. That was her plan until she heard the faint clicking of hooves on the rocky ground in the tunnel not far from her. Her head shot up in surprise and nearly caused her to smash her antlers into the ceiling of rock above her. Keiko backed away as far as she could, pressing her side into the wall behind her, but it was obvious that whoever it was had found her. 'Please don't hurt me,' she prayed silently just as the figure came into the dim light that her lantern provided. Her ears pinned against her head, but she listened to the words that the dark stallion spoke from the safe distance he had stopped at. She blinked slowly, studying the stranger from a distance. No weapons could be seen from where he stood... but how could she trust him? "You may come closer... but stop at the entrance to this room. Your people have shown me much of this world that I've been thrown into, and my trust is not as easy to come by as it once was." Keiko said, trying her hardest to keep her voice from shaking while she stayed pressed against the cavern wall.

Doev
Her voice seemed to boom like thunder, but it was only the natural amphitheater structure of the tunnel that had produced such a sound; however his perception slithered beneath it all—beneath the modified voice, beneath the imposing visage of scales and antlers—tasting the air with the lashing of a forked tongue. Doev had a fast eye and sharp ears, both impressible to the betrayals of her body against her, and they were details he selected as concisely as an oxpecker bird dousing for a wound. Fear—that shudder in the voice, the manner she had thrown up her head, how quickly she back-pedaled with those tucked hindquarters, and even her way of standing, so very still, all had been spies; she was afraid. It was effortless, so effortless, the manner in which he was capable of reverting to the primordial beast he was in his youth, one which identified weakness in the way a predator would focal point a animal with a limp, and while there was an almost tactile shift in energy at once, Doev did not pounce. Doev reversed that energy, and relinquished control. “ As you bid.” Then his statuesque silhouette shifted before a small stony scratch brought forth a tiny flame that only barely illuminated the bronzy face of the stallion as he bowed to an abandoned oil lantern and lit the wick. Within a moment or two, a yellowed light bloomed out into the shadowy niches and crannies of the entry alcove to the tunnels. That single tawny eye turned on her; in the sudden difference of light, its pupil had shrunken considerably, rendering his intense stare more so. Doev studied her for the briefest moment, noting her pale cream coat, her motif of salmon-flesh scales, her startling blue eyes, and the sharp crooks of her branching horns; he did not fail to note the bandage on her side. He looked at it unfathomably before he turned away and placed his linen parcel on a natural table of hew stone beside him, unwrapping the folds in his own time. “ I don’t think I can hold you to any blame for a lack of trust when you’re being stoned for having a stroll.” There was an undertone—a new note to that deep voice, but its nature was nebulous. The two persimmons and the pomegranate were revealed, and Doev brought out a small pocket knife, opening it with a metallic scratch of the blade. He did not look up while he cut into the fruit. “ Are you hungry?” There was a pause as he cut into the leathery husk of the pomegranate. “ Aodh does love exotic foods. I would have better cottoned to peaches or plums, but with such tender flesh they don’t survive transport well; and flies are quick. Persimmons, however, are like stones before they ripen, and pomegranate can survive months if kept cool and away from the air—“ Doev looked up with a pause before offering an off-kilter, somewhat broken, smile. “ Sorry. I apparently just don’t know how to entertain beyond the subject of fruit and insects.” Not entirely true. His smile lingered, though dulled, as his eye returned to the fruit and he finished portioning it. “ What may I call you?” Doev asked, wiping the blade on the linen before closing it and tucking it away again. “ The word ‘kirin’—as you likely hear it these days—is indistinguishable from a curse. I feel using it would be discourteous of me."

Keiko | Breim | Outsider "As you bid." Her ears twitched at the sound of his voice echoing off of the tunnel walls. The rocks behind her scraped her side uncomfortably, but she dared not move from where she stood. At least from here, she could possibly dodge whatever attacks he may throw her way or maybe even escape through the tunnel in front of her if she could get around him in time.
Keiko's mind and heart raced as the stranger came closer, wandering through the dark tunnels as a shadowy, frightening figure. It felt as though her heart was inside of her throat by the time he made it to the doorway into the small alcove she was in. Maybe this was it. Perhaps she would be taken out of the misery she had known since appearing in these dark, damp caverns. If her daughter wasn't in this realm, maybe if this stranger killed her, she would be reunited with her sweet, baby girl.
Her icy blue eyes were piercing, staring intensely at the stallion as the light from her lantern shone on his face for the first time. The same yellow light from her lantern that made her pupils narrow into reptilian slits made his pelt gleam an almost shiny bronze color, and if Keiko weren't so high-strung and worried at the moment, she would probably think his pelt was quite lovely, but looks were the last thing on her mind. His eyes studied her for a brief moment as if she were some kind of specimen in a museum, his gaze lingering on her salmon-colored scales and antlers. Normally, she wouldn't mind someone marveling at her, but this was much different. She was an outcast, lost and alone in a world that she no longer knew that was filled with equine that hated her for the scales and antlers she once loved.
Keiko watched silently as he unraveled some kind of cloth to reveal what appeared to be round fruit, something she remembered being bountiful in her previous home but hadn't seen yet in the time that she had been in Nariah. The distraction of the beautiful fruit nearly made her miss what he said next. "I don't think I can hold you to any blame for a lack of trust when you're being stoned for having a stroll." Her response was a gentle snort, and she lifted her head slightly and unpinned her ears from the sides of her neck. "Well, I'm glad that at least one of you seems to have some sense to them..." The kirin responded quietly, her long, lion-like tail swaying gently behind her.
Her brows narrowed suspiciously as he brandished a knife whose blade glistened in the lantern light, but she soon calmed once more when she noticed that his attention didn't sway from cutting the fruit in front of him. Her ears twitched, listening carefully to his rough yet oddly calming voice. Keiko hesitated for a second at his question, wondering if he could possibly just be trying to get her guard down to slice her open with his pocket knife. Her hesitation was filled with his soft talking, explaining how fruits such as the ones in front of him were transported such a far distance from Aodh all the way to Breim. He cut himself off suddenly and looked up at her with a hint of a smile as he apologized for his seemingly boring conversation topic. "It's quite alright. This is probably the most sophisticated conversation I've had since my... appearance." Her cloven hooves carried her forward while the quiet of the tunnels betrayed her as the growling of her stomach echoed off of the cavern walls. "I wouldn't mind a few slices."
"What may I call you?" Her eyes lifted from where she had been staring at the sliced fruit to meet his steely gaze. "I have been calling myself Keiko... it's just a name that I picked up when I arrived here since I don't recall what I was called in my past life, but it is better than just being called 'kirin'." Her tone was rather sad, and her gaze drifted to the floor for a moment before she ended her little pity-party. "So, Doev, what brings you here? Are you here to capture me, kill me perhaps? Or is there another reason for your visit?"

Doev
“ Look at me and breath once.” Doev chuckled; a faint whisper of cold subterranean air currents through the tunnels leavened his pause. “ I’m a politician. Had the intent been to harm you, I would not be here, and you wouldn’t be capable of doing that anymore. I believe you’re smarter than that.” Albeit ‘a politician’ in name only, noted an afterthought. Doev leaned a shoulder against the natural arching door frame of the alcove, affecting an air of casual confidence as he brought a halved persimmon to his mouth; his oddly gentle eye crackled with the warmed honey of lingering laughter, and albeit so, his smile became wistful. “ When Breim first looked at me, do you know what it saw?” He asked in rhetoric, pausing to cast a glance at the edge of Nariah from over his withers. “ What Breim saw was refuse, a beast. I was born a bastard of the royal family, a living testament to the ugly truth that nobility is not as wholly pure as perceived. My sire was a criminal, my dam a royal whore, and I’d inherited the very worst from both of them. My color was, and is, conspicuous—‘ugly’ in Breim standards—and as nothing more than an investment in-training to my sire, my heart became ‘ugly’ too; I became a beast that could elicit the same caliber of murmurs and glances you’ve become familiar with when I was no more than twelve years old—and I’d become that beast because that was what society said I was.” Even when verbose, his tone and pace remained smooth and even, seasoned with the strolling vowels and the soothing pauses that marked his idiom. “ But then I chose and decided, 'to hell with that.' ” His lion’s eye returned to her. “ That is my reason for being here: because I find great difficulty in believing that all kirin are the monsters society claims them to be, because the greatest gift the Gods have bestowed upon us is that power to choose. What I want is to learn who you are—that is part of what you want, isn’t it? To be understood?” His smile was a genuine yet broken thing that broadened unfathomably before his eye turned away to once more regard Nariah, his expression preoccupied as he appeared to glean the sleepless illumination and oddly solemn murmur of the capital. “ I digress,” Doev said. “ You’re welcome to the fruit; it’s all yours.”

Keiko | Breim | Outsider Her curled ears twitched at his words, listening to the soft chuckle in his tone as if he thought something were funny. Keiko didn't think anything was humorous at all about the threats to her life the people of Breim had given her in her short time of being alive once more, however, Doev was right about one thing. If he had wanted to hurt her, he could have easily done so by now or gotten someone else to kill her. Maybe they'd use her as an example to the other kirins living in the area to disappear for good or be dealt with violently. "Very true. From what I've seen, you Breimians do have a knack for coming together to fight against the unknown." Keiko stated with a small, curious tilt to her head. It was a trait that she admired in them (despite them trying to stone her).
As he leaned casually on the rock beside him and began to tell a tale with a wistful gleam in his eyes, Keiko listened intently, and her blue eyes studied him closely, waiting to see if there would be some hint of a lie on his face while the words spilled from his mouth. So he had been a royal bastard, born to a royal mare and a criminal, beastly father. As his story continued, Keiko figured out where he was going with it, but her curious, intent expression did not leave her face. In her eyes, it took great courage to overcome such prejudice at such a young age as he probably was and to endure it for so long. It had only been a couple of weeks since her appearance in this world, and Keiko was already finding the hatred for her that stemmed only from her scales and antlers hard to bear.
A small, sad smile appeared on the kirin's lips as Doev fell into silence. Her eyes drifted to the ground for a moment, relief filling her lungs and allowing her to heave a steady breath before she lifted her gaze back toward him. "You must be very brave and strong for having dealt with all of that hatred for so long for something that you had no control over," she started but paused to take a small piece of sliced fruit and pop it into her mouth. The burst of flavor nearly made her hum in delight, but instead, she simply smiled. "I've been waiting for weeks for someone to approach me, and hear my side of all of this. To see for themselves if I were the threat they believe me to be. I was beginning to think that the world had become sheep and no longer were gifted with the ability to think for themselves... there's much of this world that has changed." Her eyes glanced over toward the text book laying beside her bed. The cover of it was illuminated by the lamplight, revealing that it was a book of Hireath's history. "I'll answer all of the questions you may have to the best of my ability. When I appeared here, I lost many of my memories from my past." Keiko admitted, remembering how bad her amnesia had been. "I do have a favor to ask of you in return though. I want to know about this place and its people. If I'm to be accepted, I need to know the people's customs and its past."

Doev
Not entirely true, Doev thought for her statement on the unity of Briem. “ A people must stand together if they are to stand at all,” he said, gauging the wistful smile she offered in return, and it was then that something oddly contented entered his expression, something ruminative. For him, there was a single thread that connected them then, thin but apparent, small but valuable, and it shortened the gap society had placed between them. Her following comment on the nature of his character elicited another one of those cooled chuckles—as though he were in on some joke she was not privy to. “ O-o-o-oh, don’t romanticize it,” Doev drawled, a following sigh separating his sentences. “ There’s sadly little bravery or strength in desperation.” Or brutality, he added inwardly. Perhaps it was hard to imagine a child as monstrous; in retrospect, when Doev recalled his smaller siblings and how other he had been compared to them, his former self had become alien, a stranger, a shadowy reflection, someone else. It was upon this concept that he had come to his philosophy, one that encompassed a far broader spectrum than the kirin alone. Doev looked up quickly from where his eye had drifted to the cold cavern floor. “ So the rumors are true, then:” he stated, his mouth bowing in a frown,“ the kirin have lost their memories.” He immediately thought of the times he had crawled into the suffocating dark beneath the tavern floors as a child, groping blindly for something, anything, whether it was money or information; the kirin also groped out in their own darkness, one deeper than the caverns surrounding them, one that sank in deeper than their external world. He blinked over the sorry stare he hadn’t realized he’d been holding on her for a moment too long, his gaze shifting somewhat to regard the text book she’d been studying. “ This for that, then,” he began again gradually. "A fair trade. I can also offer help aside from information; where I can, if I can—” Doev paused, his lone eye turning to hold her whole “ —but in order for me to do that, I’m going to need you to be honest with me; I cannot assist in something I know nothing of.” He did not expect trust so easily from an individual that had been tormented by the very people he owed his alliance to, nor did he expect his altruism to seem immediately genuine, and it was, admittedly, symbiotic rather than one-sided. “ A-a-and to start:” Doev droned, moving into a rough segue to initiate the back and forth, “ prolonged eye contact is definitely taboo here.” Doev smirked coyly, exposing the fact that he had been openly breaking this very taboo for the entirety of their conversation. “ It doesn’t often translate well with nonnatives that aren’t familiar with the custom,” he admitted. It might not be a hard deduction at that point, perhaps, to realize that he had done so in prospect of fostering a connection between them rather than broadening the gap. He was, in the end, still predispositioned to the behavior that had earned his place in politics—whether or not he cottoned to it personally. " Now, what do you want, Keiko? Tell me. Tell me what you do remember, and ask whatever you wish."

Keiko | Breim | Outsider The kirin mare listened carefully to the words that spilled from the stranger. That's what he was: a stranger. Despite his friendly demeanor, could she really say that she trusted Doev? How many times had she been ridiculed here? What were the chances that the one Breimian interested in actually just talking and figuring things out would come to find her? Keiko had been shown nothing but distrust and hatred so far in her short time in these dark tunnels, but she wouldn't show her distrust of him, not unless he gave her a reason to. She'd merely watch with eyes like a hawk on its prey for any signs of deceit. 'I'm not going to be killed in these tunnels by this horse nor am I going to tell him any secrets... not that I really know any. I don't want to show any sort of weakness.'
It became harder to keep up her walls as he described how his people treated him as a monster just as they did to her, and part of her wished desperately that she could trust him, to have someone to talk to without fear of persecution. Her mind wouldn't let her heart be betrayed, however. It sealed itself off and locked the doors tight, and she gave a simple nod of her head as Doev chuckled about not romanticizing what he had had to do to make it through before lifting another piece of fruit to her mouth.
A small sigh escaped her that was followed by an irritated snort. Keiko hated this. Hated how her mind seemed to be filled with a fog so thick that she could only catch unfocused glimpses of things that whizzed by her too fast for her to even try to focus on. "Yes... at least, I have. I'm sure it's different for everyone. Some may remember more, some less." Keiko muttered, her eyes drifting to the ground for a moment before she forced them to look back at Doev. She was not going to have any sort of pity-party. She was strong, independent, and always had been... or so she remembered.
As her eyes returned to his, Keiko saw a flicker of something in his gaze, something she hadn't expected from someone who may be there to harm her. It was a look of sympathy and sadness that could not be faked even by the best actor and be truly believable. Was there a chance that he was telling the truth then? That she wasn't just fooling herself and wanting someone to talk to? The look was gone in a moment though, and he had turned his attention to the textbooks strewn in her living quarters that she had mentioned. "Yes, I've been trying to update my knowledge of the world and recent scientific and medical findings. It's all quite different than what I remember."
Her curled ears swiveled toward him, peaked with interest. It seemed that they would both have to trust someone that they might not necessarily believe in fully in order to get something that they wanted. Keiko eyed him carefully, staring into his eyes to see if there were any flicker in his gaze or emotion, but nothing seemed to hint at dishonesty. "You have a deal, mister Doev. Information for information and maybe a little guidance, but think of betraying me and it won't matter to me to make you pay. I'm already hated and trusted as much as a hungry wolf in a flock of sheep." She said in a lighthearted tone, and a small laugh escaped her as her lion-like tail whipped behind her. "I hope you don't take offense to my defensiveness, but it has to be this way, at least for awhile. I'm sure you share similar thoughts in trusting me fully."
At his next statement, Keiko frowned before chuckling and shaking her head in disbelief. "Eye contact is taboo? What kind of place have I landed in? What if I want to admire someone's stunning and intense eyes?" She said with a joking wink in his direction before taking on a more serious demeanor. Forcing her eyes to the ground for a moment, she found herself feeling odd not looking someone in the eyes while she was talking to them. "What do you look at then when you're speaking with someone? It feels like I'm talking to your hooves." Keiko questioned, her brows narrowing in confusion. If this was what Breimians did though, she'd have to adjust if she wanted to be treated halfway decently in this foreign place.
Then it was her turn to speak, and Keiko found herself pondering on where to even begin. "Well, I suppose there are quite a few details that may be of interest to you about my past and what I do remember... even if, to me, it seems like those details are just apart of my everyday life." She said, wondering how she could even feel like that. When had she even been to her home or the city she used to live in? Had it been weeks, months, or even years? Yet she felt like she had done some of these things just yesterday. "I was born in a place called Old Valore, and I remember it being a beautiful place with stunning architecture that was found nowhere else in Hireath as well as beautiful art that was created by master artists." Keiko paused, trying to catch her memories as they floated by in her mind. "I was a Physician, but I didn't take care of horses. No, I took care of something much larger, more scales..." Keiko wrestled with her thoughts, trying to remember the giant beasts she once took care of. Then, she remembered their great, leathery wings and reptilian eyes staring at her as she worked on them. "They were dragons. I tended to whatever wounds they suffered from during battles and training, and I made sure they were healthy." It was a relief to finally recall something so vivid from her past as if she were finally conquering her amnesia bit by bit.
"Do you know what became of Old Valore? None of the textbooks I found say anything about it." Keiko asked, curiosity creeping into her voice as she stared at Doev with an almost pleading expression on her face. She had to know what had become of her home and those that she had loved.
