DO YOU LIKE PIT FIGHTS? Umbra | Jenko
It’s been a while since he’s had a good fight. It’s been a while since he’s had an actual pit fight for short. Six months of inactivity due to renovations had made him a little rusty (much to his annoyance). He trained as much as he could to stay in shape but sparring or repeatedly hitting a dummy simply wasn’t the same. It wasn't enough. He took pride in pit fighting. A dummy wasn't going to cut it. He had missed the fights. He had missed the crowd and their cheers. He felt...incomplete without them. He was trembling with excitement when Coach Pryatt told him he would be part of the opening fight. On top of that, he took the win for House Ardor. His opponent was a force to be reckoned with but the stallion's strength was no match for Jenko’s speed and endurance.
“Congrats on the win, kiddo. You did great.” He heard Coach Pryatt say while a random servile slave was busying herself with strapping an ice pack to his knee. He thanked them and packed his belongings, ready to leave. He couldn't help but smile. Today had been a great day. Perhaps Ignacio wasn't ignoring his prayers after all.

Umbra had watched the pit fights from afar. It wasn't something that Lord Caspian would likely be happy about him doing, considering his age. But, he couldn't help it. He wanted to see if he could spot Galloway in one of the battles. He sneaked down to the area where the pit fighters would be. Of course, Umbra didn't go into the actual space, he just waited outside the entrance. He peaked in with his ears perked.
No one was in sight. Umbra sighed, considering how much time he would have until he had to go home. Umbra itched at his shoulder marked with the brand as he waited there. Maybe someone cool would come out and have news about the pitfighter he was looking for.

“See you in two days, Coach. Let me know if you need the dummies!”
Jenko made his way to the entrance with his bag slung across his shoulder. It wasn’t necessarily the only way out but he loved hanging out with the spectators after a show. Besides, his sister was probably waiting for him by the entrance as well. She had told him that she would be attending the fight. He made sure to keep a slow but steady pace so the ice pack wouldn’t fall off. It looked ridiculous but he couldn’t afford an injury. He only just jumped back in action. It would be a shame if something were to happen.
A greeting, a group of giggling mares and few compliments later he found himself outside the Crucible, sighing contently. He looked up, squinting at the harsh sunlight. It truly is a nice day today.

Umbra looked up at the pit fighter that had just exited the crucible. He trotted up to him with a curious twinkle in his eye. "Excuse me?" Umbra mumbled as he approached the stallion. He was intimidating with all his scars and the obvious look of coming from a battle. In all honesty, it was pretty cool. Umbra almost wished he could do what the stallion could. But, it had already been determined that Umbra was too much of a scaredy cat for that. He cleared his throat to be heard better. "H-hello, sir. Um... I was wondering if you know Mr. Galloway. I-if you do, have you seen him in there?" He gestured to the entrance to the Crucible with his nose. Umbra flicked his tail around his hind legs absent-mindedly. His sea-foam eyes were wide as he took in the sight of the pit fighter. The closer he was, the scarier he found the stallion. He was tall and had that look about him that he could do some damage if you pissed him off. Word Count: 179 Sorry about the late reply ;-; Kinda spaced

“Excuse me?”
Jenko’s attention turned to the young unicorn addressing him. He wondered if the colt had attended today’s pit fights…Or any pit fights for that matter. He frowned. Wasn’t he a bit young for that? Were his parents or masters okay with this? He found it to be a bit reckless on their part but who was he to judge? He had been fighting since he was twelve.
He couldn’t help but smile when he asked him about his friend. He had hoped that his smile would reassure him. He looked scared of him and Jenko did not want the child to feel that way. “I sure do, buddy.” He leaned closer to the colt as if he was about to tell him a secret “As a matter of fact he’s my best friend.”
He wondered why the colt was interested in Gallow’s whereabouts. He prayed it was nothing bad. He’s had enough of that lately. “I think he’s been in the pit fight against Roulette. Why do you ask? Oh, pardon my manners. I’m Jenko, by the way.” Had he seen the colt before? He didn’t exactly look familiar. “What’s your name, buddy?”
No problem! I apologize for the late answer as well. It's been busier than expected ;^;

Umbra's shyness dissipated into a massive grin. Of all the pit fighters he could have run into, he'd picked the perfect one. "You're his best friend!? That's so cool!" Quickly, the colt realized he was being a bit over the top. He spoke quietly after that. "My name is Umbra. Nice to meet you, Mr. Jenko." Umbra gave a small dip of his head. He carefully scanned over the larger horse once again. He certainly had a fearsome look, but he seemed nice enough. Most slaves were nice to him though, probably since he was so young. Umbra took a deep breath before speaking again. He didn't want to sound like a crazy little foal. "I was hoping to see him, but I guess he's busy, then... Well, uh, anyway, I'm his son. That's how I know him! But, if you're his best friend you have to know a lot about him, right? You gotta be pretty cool too, right?" Umbra's eyes seemed to sparkle with excitement as he spoke to the pit fighter. He had so many scars, there had to be a lot of awesome stories to tell. Then again, he could totally hate being confronted by a foal and accosted with a bunch of stupid questions. He might even be really busy. "Uh, s-sorry. I just got excited, you don't have to answer." Umbra looked down at his hooves like they were the most fascinating thing in the world. Word Count: 242

The colt’s excitement was contagious. Jenko couldn’t help but chuckle and return the bow. “Likewise, Umbra. Jenko for short is just fine. No need for formalities. We’re all brothers here.” Umbra felt clearly more at ease around him which was a relief. Jenko was good with children. He had always been good with chil-
Wait.
Hold up. What did he just say? Son?!
That, however, was unexpected. Galloway had a son. Jenko needed a moment to process this. Gallow has a son? He took a good look at the colt. He did look like him. Umbra’s spots clearly resembled Galloway’s.
“Please don’t apologize, Umbra. You have every right to ask. You’re in luck! As a matter of fact, I do know a few things about him.” He chuckled again. “However, I have no idea where he is. I guess he went home after the fight. He could still be around. Would you like to take a look? Not to worry, they won’t bother you if you’re with me.” A son… he still couldn’t quite believe it.
“Your father is not the only cool guy around indeed.” He said whilst offering the colt a warm smile “I’m a pretty cool guy myself. Galloway is much cooler though.” A son… Gods. He shifted positions so the scars on his pasterns wouldn’t be visible. He hated talking about his scars and he especially wanted to spare the foal the horrible stories behind them. “So… tell me, what would you like to know?”

Umbra gave the pit fighter another huge smile. "Nice to meet you, Jenko!" He always liked being able to say someones name without using any formalities. It made him feel like they were closer than simple acquaintances. At the next question, Umbra nodded quickly. "I wanna look around!" He had never really seen the Crucible before and it sounded like an exciting adventure, especially since it was to look for his dad. "You know, you pit fighters are a lot nicer than I thought. You all look big and scary, but you're really nice! And cool." He giggled, since Jenko had mentioned that Galloway wasn't the only cool one. "My first owner said he wanted me to be a pit fighter, but I don't think I could be. It looks scary. Is it scary?" He pondered over a few other questions as well. "Are pit fighters mean to each other outside the arena? Do you guys really wanta kill each other when you are in it?" He really didn't know much about the fights. Everything seemed so foreign, despite how close it was. "Do you have to be big to win?" Umbra figured that would be enough questions to start Jenko off with. So he stopped talking and looked up at Jenko with shining eyes as he walked beside him. Word Count: 220

“That’s settled then. Come on in, buddy.” he hadn’t seen Liana around either. Perhaps his sister was inside as well. This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to present her to Gallow. He had told him he would.
It didn’t feel quite right, though. If Umbra was truly his son how come he knew so little about his father? Or pit fighting for that matter. Truth be told, he couldn’t see the foal become a pit fighter. He didn’t want to. He saw a lot of himself in Umbra (when he was younger). Umbra’s kind spirit would be his downfall. The wolves wouldn’t hesitate to devour him alive. Jenko had learned that lesson the hard way. Proud to be a pit fighter or not it had changed him… yet he liked to think that he was one of the nicest around, despite what he had been through.
He leaned in to look Umbra in the eyes, demanding the colt’s full attention. How do you even explain pit fighting to a child? “Pit fighting is scary.” And most of all dangerous “You could be one if you wanted to. After all, you have pit fighting blood running through your veins. Galloway’s father was a pit fighter as well. The question is: do you really want to? There are many risks involved.” Including death.
“Most fights don’t last long and most of us are 'friendly' to each other (outside the Crucible). There are exceptions, though. It depends. Everyone is different. Not all of us are nice. Some fighters strive to harm others. Always be careful around pit fighters, Umbra. Or around strangers for short. Stay woke, buddy. Promise?” He reached out to Umbra so he could bump hooves with his, sealing the deal. He felt a strong need to protect the colt… and Umbra wasn’t even his.
“You clearly don’t have to be big to win. Look at me, I’m one of the lightest around but that doesn’t stop me from winning. You have to be smart, strong and lucky to win.”
(sorry for the super long post. Jenko is just being protective lol)

Umbra was surveying their surroundings. Everything looked so interesting. There were nobles and bloody slaves and underhanded deals. There really was a lot to take in. Umbra was pulled from his thoughts as Jenko explained about Galloway's father being a pit fighter. "That's cool! Good to know I'm gonna be big and strong like them, someday!" He giggled. "But, I don't want to be a fighter. Like you said, it's scary. And it hurts. I don't like being hurt." The colt shuddered at the thought. He had hated being hit when he'd done something wrong when he was even younger. Even just smacking himself against furniture accidentally was really unpleasant. It seemed more surprising that all the big, scary fighters could be nice to each other on the outside. "That's really cool, I always thought you guys were all just scary and mean. But, you're not!" He grinned up at the slave. "I know, strangers can be bad. I try to be careful. When I first met dad I was about to run away, cause I bumped into him and he was big and mean looking." Umbra laughed at himself. "But, he's not! Just like you're not." Umbra glanced at Jenko's hoof, then he realized what he wanted. His small hoof gently tapped against the larger stallion's. "Woke?"Word Count: 218 I may have laughed a little too much at Jenko telling him to stay woke XD And don't sweat the length, a lot of people write three times as much and damn, that's a lot

“Good. You're absolutely right. Be who you want to be.” he nodded in approval. Umbra’s hoof was tiny compared to his. He thought it was adorable... and sad. His hoof had been as small once. Time flies and equines change. “I can imagine meeting your father was quite the experience. He’s a big fellow. And uh… about stay woke…” he trailed off, not sure how he was supposed to explain that expression. “…It means: stay alert at all times, beware of your surroundings.” He nodded again, satisfied with his answer. Surely Umbra would understand that explanation? He didn’t know how else to put it.
He took a good look around. The pit fighter noticed a few familiar faces but none of them were Gallow’s. Or Liana’s for that matter. Had his sister left already? “I’m afraid he’s not here, buddy.” He said, scanning the setting from left to right just to make sure. “I’m sorry. I wish I could’ve been more useful to you. Is there anything else I can do for you? I do not mean to keep you if you have places to be.” the ice pack had slipped from his knee by the time he was done talking. Jenko glanced down and cursed inwardly, strapping it back on as fast as he could. “Sorry about that.”
Sorry about that lol :') I couldn't resist putting a meme in there

Umbra smiled up at Jenko. He seemed like a wonderful stallion. Not to mention he was his dad's friend. So he didn't mind listening to everything he had to say. "I don't need to be anywhere really. Mister Caspian is very nice and lets me stay out as long as I don't make too much trouble." The colt giggled. "But if yooou have to go, then I can stop bothering you. You seem very nice and I don't have many friends. Can we be friends?" Umbra gazed up with a smile obvious in his sparkling, seafoam eyes. His excitement was hard to contain. Not only was he getting to know other horses, he was able to learn more about pit fighters. And they were super cool. Word Count: 126

"Lord Caspian, huh? I’m pleased to hear that he treats you well." so that’s his master. “Does he approve of you being here? Does he know you’re here?” he asked, grinning. The colt seemed independent enough, but he couldn’t help himself. The fact that Umbra was his best friend’s son somehow made him fond of him already.
“I have no plans for the rest of the day, so we can hang out if you’d like. It would be my pleasure.” He loved that idea more than he cared to admit. The Gods truly were in a good mood today. “Gods, lucky me!” he exclaimed excitedly. “Today is my lucky day; I’d love to be friends with someone as cool as you, Umbra.”
He chuckled lightheartedly. Umbra was truly something else, his excitement as contagious as ever. Jenko vowed that he’d protect this one at all costs. He felt obliged to do so. “So, what would you like to do first?” Jenko had completely forgotten about his sister by now. It was fine, really. She'd yell at him first but she'll forgive. He couldn't wait to tell Galloway all about it...speaking of which, the latter had some serious explaining to do.
