[ Phoebe ]
It was late in the morning when Phoebe stood on the bridge, the weight on her back reminding her that she was not there to sight see as much as she was to work. Technically. The Chevalier in front of herself didn’t exactly hold her accountable for what was supposed to be her job, usually even going so far as to insist he be the one to carry his own supplies or weapons as he had for months before he convinced his superiors for her to serve him, but that did not mean she wanted to risk wandering away under his watch and getting both of them in trouble. She would never be able to see the whole of the city without being a slave. Her branding made sure of that, even when she prayed they would find a way to leave without him being connected to her escape. Standing there, watching as Axenus chatted to a few vendors making sure that everything was okay and no one had tried to steal anything off of them before his shift, she sighed under her breath and looked around. There was so much activity, so many other horses. It was a shame they couldn’t slip away, run to the trees he described when he told her about the outside with all the usual hustle and bustle the city always had. Who would miss a slave? A Chevalier? He could still contact his family if they moved to another herd, one that didn’t know them but accepted them all the same. They’d gone over it countless times, deciding where to go. The only thing they relied on then was when. When Phoebe could be smuggled out or otherwise run. When Axenus could leave peacefully, resigning from his job and find her. That was the plan. From her thoughts, she blinked when her ears twitched to the sound of wings fluttering. “Day,” she whispered affectionately, a smile curling at the edge of her lips as she peered at the blue jay that had perched himself on her shoulder. “You’re not supposed to be here.” Not where everyone could see him. Would they so much as notice? She took a glance around, pretending for the moment to ignore the familiar that chirped in response and playfully tugged at her mane.
