It had been a long, hot day in Valore. Most of the residents had retreated indoors or in the shade for the duration of the daylight hours, and now that the sun had set, the city was even busier than it usually was. Sure it was still hot, but it wasn't unbearable like it had been during the day. And of course, Valerius had been out in it all day. In full plate armor as well since there had been an event, he couldn't get away with just his breastplate and helm like he usually work on patrol. After carrying around the heavy armor for hours in the hot sun, the stallion was exhausted. He couldn't wait to get to the barracks and get the damn metal off, and that's where he was headed. He definitely needed a good nights sleep before his shift tomorrow. At least he wouldn't need to wear the full monkey suit.
Out of the corner of his eye, the stallion caught a flash of white. A familiar canine trotted out of the shadows, matching pace with the large chevalier. Valerius snorted out a chuckled and looked down at the wolf. "Where exactly have you been all day?" he questioned the she-wolf. She simply snuffed and looked down an alley way indignantly. She hated being interrogated by him, and she hated being tied down to this city even worse. "Beating the heat, huh?" Valerius continued, smiling down at his companion. "Well that's good. I was worried with all that fur you were passed out in an alley from heat stroke or something." Golden eyes turned up to meet his blue ones and the stallion grinned, reaching down to rub her head with his muzzle. "I'm glad you're alright. But please check in before you go running off next time, alright?"
Just then, her ears turned upward, attention trained down a darkened, narrow street. Valerius stopped, and watched her, following her gaze down the alley. He couldn't see anything, and the drone of the people around him made it so he couldn't hear anything. But before he could question her (not like she could really reply to him anyway) she darted down the street with a growl. Valerius quickly cantered after her, his shining armor catching the little bit of light making it's way into the side street. "Astraea!" The stallion was always worried something would happen to her. Sure they had lived in the city for a while, but Astraea was used to the wilds. And a lone wolf wandering the city streets could start a panic among the residents. "Astraea come back!"
The alley widened into a small cobbled courtyard, at the other end was a small group of young horses, they couldn't be older than about seventeen or eighteen, and Astraea was charging toward them. Valerius was about to call her back, trying to keep her from confronting them, when he noticed a small bundle beneath the three colts. They were kicking at it and jeering, and then he saw it move. Valerius' demeanor instantly changed. He himself had been the subject of intense bullying and a number of beat downs when he was a child. And he was not about to let this slide.
"You there! What are you doing?!" the chevalier called out to them in a deep, commanding voice. One of the colts quickly looked up, and seeing the fully plated chevalier standing there and the white wolf charging toward his group clearly startled him. He quickly pushed his friends and the trio darted up some nearby stairs. "Halt!" Valerius barked and Astraea stayed right on their heels. The stallion quickly ran forward to the young horse laying on the ground, whistling after Astraea, who turned back.
Upon approach, the newly made brand was incredibly visible and Valerius instantly knew what happened. The stallion approached the colt tentatively, unsure how long the assault had occurred and how injured he was. "Are you alright?" he called out to him, using a soft voice and not getting too close, not sure how he would react to the rather intimidating stallion approaching after being jumped by a gang of ruffian crusaders.
