J A L A "Where do we go from here?"
___________________________________________________________ Two long, weary legs pulled themselves up the temple steps, trembling. More than ever he wanted to rinse the grime and the fresh coat of sweat from his skin, but there was hardly any place that seemed fit to bathe. It didn’t matter now, it had been a week and the young teen was finally starting to get used to going more than a day without bathing.
He had spent the last two hours pulling a load of loose bricks in a circle around the temple, almost as though he were plowing a field. Jala had fashioned an old rope to act like a harness and a spare slab to act as a board to carry the bricks. For the past few days he had been restless, routinely getting up late in the evening to listen for any predators or trouble before going out to get this new form of exercise.
There was a reason for it. He was preparing himself. Training for the day that one of those winged terrorists might emerge from the treeline and ensnare his friends and family in ropes. Or, anticipating the day his comrades might finally have the numbers they need to take back Aquore from those killers, and put an end to them for good. They don’t need a few flight members to decide the fate of their herd for them. They could make these changes themselves.
And by Cascade and Kaia, he was going to see to it that he had his mother and father back. Post #1 Word Counter: 254 Tagging: intotherealwild

Wilbur
“Uhh, well. You look like a wreck!” Wilbur said between a yawn as he rubbed his eyes. As hard as he tried, the young boy just could not seem to fall asleep hidden away in the temple, and in the off chance that he did, the poor lad was awoken almost instantly by a series of night terrors. Often with flashes of bloodied explosions and the now threatening sound of beating pegasi wings.
So, instead of fulfilling sleep, Wilbur spent most of his nights huddled amongst his aunt and siblings, with eyes constantly twitching in either direction; an obvious state of panic. Yet it seemed like his restless mind would just barely allow him to drift into a nap while the sun was shining, and so, he spent a good portion of his day sleeping with his mind’s eye partially open. Though, as he just pulled himself out of a shaking slumber, the sun was beginning to set. The scrawny boy had made his way through the stone corridor with loud bedridden dirty blonde locks that seemed to stick out in every direction. Turning toward the exit of the temple he was unsurprised to see his elder brother making his way up the staircase. Yet even through sleepy eyes he could see Jala’s legs and arms tremble, “are you-u aaalllright?” WIlbur asked through another yawn.
“Oh.” the boy stopped as he hugged his forearms closer to his chest, “you were carting around those stones again, weren’t ya?” Wilbur was surprised to have spotted Jala pulling lumber the other day, especially when there was no reason for it, in fact, the smaller boy seemed to prefer to stay out of farm work when he could. Though his muscles and bones were bred to be strong and capable, and he was a bit, that didn’t make farming his forte. If it wasn’t for the faith his father had put in him after his two eldest sibling had left, Wilbur would much prefer to work on crafts with his mother all day long. Though it was anything but a good situation, Will sure was not going to spend energy that could be used for a good rest. Besides, the temple did not seem to consist of farm fields that needed turning.
“You’ve uh.. You’ve gotten pretty serious about your exercise regimen since you left home, huh?”

J A L A "Where do we go from here?"
___________________________________________________________ Ta'Keet had been waiting at the temple entrance, his tiny body pancaked against the floor and head resting on his webbed paws. The otter couldn't help but chatter in pleasure as Jala had made his way up, raising his head in the scrawny teen's direction.
"Hey Taka..." Jala drowsily greeted him and kneeled down to greet the otter. He extended a hand, giving Ta'Keet the opportunity to sniff it.
"You smell sweaty," The otter chattered, but nevertheless began to climb up his arm onto his shoulders.
"Yes, I believe that's the point, Tak..." Jala said through a huff sigh. For once the cold night breeze felt rather refreshing on his skin, and he sat down, still trembling, at the edge of the temple steps.
He jerked a little in surprise when he heard a soft voice behind him. Wilbur yawning. The teen gave a quick glimpse over his shoulder and sighed in relief. "I'll be alright, Will. Not the first time I've come back shaking..."
He admitted that with a little bit of a heavy heart. Yeah, sure, plenty of times he had worked himself to find Tethis scolding him for pushing himself so hard, but there were other times, like when they had first arrived here, that Jala couldn't help but shake from the chills. Only fifteen and he had to be an adult. Only fifteen.
"I guess ol' man Tethis got that much into me, hah." The teen joked, rubbing his palms together. He patted the stone, offering Wilbur to sit down beside him. "I'm guessing you couldn' sleep again, huh...yeah, I got a job delivering things back in Inaria. Some of that stuff was kinda heavy." He admitted. "But I felt, you know, if those guys are out there...then I need to get stronger. For you, for Zuri, Makar, Bug, even Aunt Zaire..." He huffed a little. Ta'Keet crawled down into Jala's lap, and flopped about, begging for attention.
"Figured I couldn't just sit around like a sitting duck out here." Post #2 Word Counter: 334 Tagging: intotherealwild

Wilbur
His brows were pushed together, a look of concern for most people, but this was Wilbur, and a look of concern was only natural for the boy. His jaw was tight as he sat down next to his brother, “Yeah, okay, you’ll be alright, but ya still smell horrible.” He scrunched his nose, making sure to avoid any contact between the elder of the two.
“You don’t have to worry about us, we made do just fine when you were gone.” Wilbur didn’t mean for that to come off cold, that really wasn’t even his intention. It was merely a bitter innocence toward his brother that he couldn’t seem to shake as hard as he tried. “Who’s Tethis?” He asked in genuine curiosity, gaze slowly shifting toward the deep brown otter that sprawled across Jala’s lap. “And you’ve gotten a familiar.. Now? ..What can he do?” Wilbur was eyeing the creature suspiciously now. “He doesn’t seem very useful. The ducks were annoying, but at least they had a purpose.”
Will raised his brows and a smile cracked on his lips for a mere second before returning to its neutral position. His purple-eyed gaze was now staring blankly ahead. “I wonder where those stupid birds have gotten off to now.” The messy-haired boy said as he leaned back, supporting himself with hands pressed into the cold stone.”

J A L A "Where do we go from here?"
___________________________________________________________ "It's not like we have places to bathe out here, Will." He wouldn't say it, for Will's sake--he knew how anxious the boy got--but he figured that the rivers and lakes around here were probably gator and snake infested. Now Jala might have had the upperhand by being able to communicate and control beasts--but that didn't mean others were necessarily safe. On their own, just about every person here was at a disadvantage. Jala was the only one who could benefit from this place.
He tapped his tongue to the roof of his mouth, trying to ignore the coldness in Wilbur's voice. "My boss. Or, he was my boss." He sighed. "Kept harping on about how important my job was. Only took me three days to realize he was serious...well, for all I know he may very well be dead now." It made his heart ache a little just knowing it. Tethis had been a jolly, burly, middle-aged man with wild dark hair and quite the enthusiasm for being someone who took orders and coordinated deliveries. It was sad to know he was probably gone...
The otter rolling in Jala's lap shot up and straightened himself up at the small insult, chittering in response. "You're one to talk, not helping when your siblings swarm me!" The otter jabbed. Sadly it all came out as incoherent squeaks, understood by Jala and Jala alone. He decided not to repeat those words.
"Well, he's not when it comes to farming and all that...but he keeps me company." Jala gently tried to defend the otter. "I rescued him from the market with a friend of mine." Jala then bit his lip, and proceeded to stroke Ta'Keet's back. "You might not wanna say that though. He's pretty good at understanding our language...mostly because I've learned how to understand him."
The tone that rolled off his tongue was laughably awkward. How would his siblings react to learning that he could literally talk to animals now?
"Probably wandering the streets of Inaria right now. I hope ol' Fuzzy Joe's made it, at least. You think whoever has the city now will be able to handle all those ducks?" Jala enthused.

Wilbur
The blonde child bit his lip at his brother’s remark. Yeah, no place to wash up out here really, he knew that, he did! Yet the poor boy could not help but feel anxious. Though Will’s attention was swept away from the thought of uncleanliness as Jala began to speak of his work. He found a job, a real one. Wilbur could not pinpoint why exactly this hurt him, shouldn’t he be happy for his brother? Yet the only thing he felt was betrayed and abandoned. First Judas, then Jala, the two people he really looked up to were whisked away only to have the extra weight of their forgotten responsibilities crash upon his shoulders along with petty bitterness.
“Well, was your job as important as he said it was?” Wilbur snapped a bit and instantly regretted it, why must his attitude always push through? He returned his attention back to the otter in his brother’s lap. Only to see the creature chirping away, words unknown to the boy he was trying to communicate with.
“You.. You understand him?” Wilbur raised his brows. “Well then, what did he just say?!” He sputtered gesturing to the small animal that sat across from him. Jala seemed uncomfortable, like he was admitting to a secret he had been holding in for quite some time. Glad to see he was studying something useful, Wilbur thought with a silent roll of his eyes.

J A L A "Where do we go from here?"
___________________________________________________________ Jala's head jerked to face Wilbur, his ears having instantly picked up upon the snapping in his voice. This time the teenager took more offense to such a tone, for it was a question connected to his job and Tethis, and the latter was likely dead. "First of all don't snap like that. Mom wouldn't like that, you know." He scolded. "And second of all? I don't know. Back when all I did was deliver stuff...no, I didn't consider it very important. But it was a start. I'd rather spend the entire day going from each end of Inaria delivering stuff than being out here."
Be mad at him. Snap at him, yell at him, but don't bring Ta'Keet or Tethis or the others into this. Jala himself was slowly reaching the breaking point himself.
"Yes. Fluently, in fact..." He glanced away from Wilbur, staring at the temple steps below. "...Some weird stuff's bein going on lately, I know that much..." Being blessed by Kaia, the increasingly frequent meanderings in the forest...his emotions, slowly slipping away into desperation in his search for answer. "But the stuff he said's...not worth repeating. Trus me."
'Not worth repeating? Who's side are you on?' Ta'Keet chattered. 'Your brother's bein' real mean!' Post #4 Word Counter: 207 Tagging: intotherealwild

Wilbur
The smaller boy merely cast his elder brother a side ways glance at his angered words. Wilbur wasn't sure how to react, though could feel the heat rising through him, yet catching it fairly quickly, he managed to shove his mixed emotions back down where no one could see.
Peering between his messy, blonde head of hair he let out a small, "pffft.." before looking away with a roll of his eyes. His purple gaze caught on one of the many trees that stood proudly before them, yet his head was other places and he couldn't say he was exactly seeing any of the wild's frightening habitat.
The fact was, Wilbur didn't actually give a shit what his brother said or was going to say, but when he looked back on everything that had happened, he still left them. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. Perhaps his fragile young mind was irrationally placing blame on his sibling, but his frustration sure didn't seem to want to twist into anything but toxic fumes of anger. And there was something to be said about that right there, sure. Yet even he was unaware to the tumbling emotions and anxieties that spilled from his aura, his irritation (that comes with his age range, mind you) seems to have selected Jala as an excellent punching bag, no matter how many hits he threw back.
"It's not any of my business, anyway." He muttered in passive aggression.
