Ioru & Little Bird
The sound of hammer upon wood and chisel on stone reverberated throughout the district in a raucous symphony of renewal that rendered conversation nearly impossible. It was just as well, because it spared Ioru the need to open his mouth. As he leaned back and pushed the tangled mop of hair back from the eyes he looked out over the construction area, still not quite able to accept the sight that stung his eyes. So much had been destroyed in the fires, so many homes and shops lost that it made his chest ache at the mere thought. Whole blocks had been wiped out by the rampaging dragons, but this was the first time he was able to fully appreciate the scale of it. Already several buildings had risen in the place of the old ones, the people of Nariah wasting no time in the reconstruction of their home. It was progressing smoothly from what he could see, though he was no expert, and everyone around him worked with that same calm determination that had always humbled his restless soul.
Feeling curious eyes upon himself, Ioru glanced around and caught several of the workers staring in his direction. As their gazes met they quickly looked away, but the youngster knew that they would be at it again the moment he turned his back to them. He sighed. It had seemed like such a great idea when he first suggested to his father that he should help with the reconstruction of the city. He would be able to do something real and useful while keeping away from the palace, a thought that had suited them both very well indeed. What he hadn't taken into account was the curiosity his presence among the people would cause. Now that he thought about it it was no wonder they were staring... Not even Toshio Arasoto would have been capable of smothering all the rumors that must have flown when Ioru was sent to the temple. It was such an unusual thing for a member of the royal family to misbehave, of course it would create a stir. He had been spared the looks and the whispering in the quiet of the temple, but now, three years after the fact he found that though time had passed people did not forget. They had recognized him within days of his arrival to the work-site, and ever since he had been the subject of endless questions, so innocently phrased but clearly fishing for any information they could pry out of him about the incident.
He made a disgusted sound as he reached for his water-skin, muttering to himself as he sipped the refreshing liquid.
"Scandal-hungry hyenas... and I thought people at the palace were bad."
