"You wear a mask for so long, you forgot who you were beneath it."Setting: The day is calm within the courtyard of the king. The Royal gardens in bloom, their sweet scent filling the air, but not being overpowering. The sun is mid high, everything feels warm and comfortable. A gorgeous day to relax and take it in. Within the gardens two souls will meet. F R A N N I E The day was like no other for the young mare. It was one of the rare occasions the King, her best friend was off spending the day learning, which normally at times she did attend at least to educate herself. Though she would admit, the King is quite educated while herself? She was blessed enough to read and write, and that was about it. It was all needed her her training to know poisons and to read about them as Deidra still sent letter to her about new poisons she had come across. Her training was never over, but it was the one thing she truly prided herself on. Frannie would keep her best friend alive, she would with out a doubt, and if she were to die for him, she'd gladly do so. Still it felt odd to not be around him, she was always about, but today she took the chance to explore the Gardens, knowing she hide some sweets within a small box within the rush bush.
With a bounce to her trot Frannie moved on wards within the court, until she reached the garden, and a soft sigh escaped her lips. While the view was beautiful, she knew what waited within the flowers and gorgeous splashes of colors. Sweets! Oh sweets one of her favorite things about food. The sweet flavors made her think flowers should taste the same, but sadly it did not to much of her dismay. Frannie glanced about as she neared the rose buch that held her sweets. Eyes scanned the area and smiled lightly as she noticed no one and within seconds she dived her face into the bush, only to let out a hiss. "Thoooorrnnnsss" she whimpered out. How could she forget, she always forgot. "I should have studied the flower book more.' she whined a bit as she opened her eyes. "Can still see, good sign Frannie." she chuckled, having no shame in talking to herself a bit. She always had when alone, especially when she was with Deidra. She was alone quite a bit. Nosing around the dirt she snorted with delight as she felt the box, and let out a faint squeal of delight. "Oh yess." she almost purred out.

Pax take my halo, yoke and crown The days had come in a blinding rush. For the past month --was it a month already? despite his mentors' best efforts, the calendar was still a puzzle for him-- Pax had been pulled in every direction by rough hands. Dirt, scabs, sweat had been scrubbed off of him, heavy clothes stretched over him. Physicians had inspected every joint and every tooth, prodding him into panic, and when they were done, the king's mentors took to prodding of a different kind. They highlighted his illiteracy, his lack of knowledge in any arena but the bloody one, snorted over their parchment and talked about him like he wasn't there. Pax was accustomed to the dismissive treatment of nobles, but the uniquely personal judgments of the scholars boiled his blood.
Pax was glad the piranhas had taken some time away from him to nip at the king for a while. Though he was tired, Pax found himself unable to sleep in the daytime-- the bed they'd provided him was too soft, and the palace servants squirmed whenever they saw him sleep on the floor. He hadn't had many moments to himself though, and the sun outside looked inviting.
The stone of the promenade was pleasantly warm under his hooves, sun-baked and gentle. The sky was clear and soft, and as he walked beneath it, the temptation to take off was significant. He was told once before that he'd be able to leave the castle, but the limitations hadn't been made clear yet. Beyond that, his flight feathers weren't fully regrown from the Crucible. His face skyward, basked in afternoon glow, Pax let his tired eyes drift shut while he imagined what the real sky would be like. He'd mastered the art of flight in tight spaces, but never taken wing in the limitless air outside. What was the wind like, that high up? What did clouds feel like? His stomach lifted in butterflies as he imagined gliding in infinite space.
A whimper from the bushes banished the fragile vision. Blinking, he moved around the groomed plants to find someone moving in the hedges. He recognized the freckled coat as Amadeus's personal slave, an individual he'd seen much more than he'd heard. She cried out once more, burying her face in the dirt beneath the branches.
He stared, frozen for a long minute as Frannie carried on oblivious.
"Do you need help?" Was his eventual question. He had a feeling he knew the answer. post 1 | 411 words

F R A N N I E
To preoccupied with her box of goodies within her rose bush she failed to notice the approaching hooves of another. She would curse herself later for this in the midst of her own embarrassment. Suddenly as Pax's voice called out to her, she froze like a statue, she did not know Pax that well, but of course worried. It wasn't a welcomed sight to see a slave head shoved into bush like some wild animals. Gods have mercy. She stood still for a second trying her best to settle herself and really understand what he was saying. Help... Did she need it? Well not really, but was it shameful to say she had done this quite a few times. Though without wanting to make more of a mess of herself, her teeth latched firmly on the box as she suddenly thrusting herself out of the bush. Thorns nicking her face a bit, but sadly she was used to this.
Eyes wild, her hair a mess, a few drips of blood fell from her face, but on her face was the biggest grin as she held onto the box but quickly dropped it on the front before her. "Thanks for asking Pax, but I've done this a few times before." she laughed a bit, her cheeks turning a faint pink as she grinned at him with delight. "But Im surprised to see you out here? You have the day off in the sort too?" she was beaming with pure delight now. "Oh do you like the gardens and the flowers?" she mused gently towards him as she glanced around. Settle Frannie, she thought to herself, lets not scare off this one with your big mouth, her inner voice pleaded, to which she of course gladly ignored.
Shaking her head, she got her hair looking a bit more normal and a lot less she just got out of bed. Or trouble, which she of course was known for. Her passion for sweets, both in taste and with eyes was a signature of hers to say the least. If she wasn't chasing down some sweet treats, she was staring as some dashing stallion. But here she was looking at Pax, and she assumed quickly he must think she was deranged. Standing there a bit awkwardly, her eyes glanced at the box and her stomach let out a grumble of hungry, craving what was int he box. "If you have some free time, maybe you can take a small break with me?" she asked offering him a kind smile.

Pax it feels better biting down Pax watched, eyes intense, as she froze. They stood there like that for a moment, two barely-acquaintances each trying to puzzle out how to best escape their current situation. Pax grimaced. He should have minded his business. He should have left her to her... whatever this was.
He snorted gently as she retreated from the bush, looking feral, clutching something in her mouth like a dog. He got the impression he was not supposed to witness what he was seeing. Was this contraband? What was she stashing in the garden? Dread began to work its way into his gut, and he lifted a hoof to turn away. Pax knew the cutthroat culture of pit slaves. He knew what trouble wandering eyes could make. If she was caught, he could be punished for his silence, or worse, she could blame him for whatever she was keeping--
Her laugh, like sunlight, stopped his racing thoughts. His hoof hovered in the air, hesitant, as she beamed at him. She was so carefree, so gentle, and radiated pure warmth. The kindness surprised him, and he watched her fix her hair with a dumbstruck expression, shocked into silence. It was unthinkable to meet someone with such kindness and candor in this artificial city. He blinked as she settled down, so easily at rest, and regarded him.
He placed his hoof back on the ground gently, and answered before the silence could bloat. "I do," he said, with a hitch. In the quiet that hung after it, he rushed to add: "Have some time. Yes." She spoke to him so readily. Everyone else in this palace (whose job didn't include prodding and prepping the king's new guard) treated him like furniture.
He felt so guilty for not remembering her name.
"The King is with his tutors," he explained, stepping closer, his curious eyes on the box. "Which means they've stopped sucking my blood for the time being." Pax offered a tense smile, and tried not to look strange. He had a hard time acting normal lately.
"Is this what you always do in your free time..." he teased, somewhat deadpan. "Dig for treasure in the hedges?" post 2 | 360 words

Frannie
It's hard to believe her smile could get any brighter, but it did when Pax mentioned he would have some time. Frannie's heart fluttered with delight, a chance to get to know Pax! She was eager to get to know him as she as he was brought to her attention. While many seemed to care about his past, what his future would gain for the crown and its legacy. While Frannie was just eager for a new friend, someone to run around with and enjoy time. She cared little for that fact he was a pitslave, Frannie had been around them a dime a dozen, their occupation did not make them some sort of monster, or less of a equine. "Oh yes, wonderful!" she beamed with pure honesty. "I was hoping perhaps sometime we could get to know each other a bit better, Id love to become friends." she grinned brightly at him.
Frannie chuckled with amusement as he spoke of the King being away with the tutors and he being left to himself. "I understand that. Im not to much of a fan of them myself. I still get tested of my skills to assure Im still skilled. I do enjoy the food, but sometimes it still makes me ill." she remarked a bit bashfully. "Still atleast we can get away, Im thankful for that." She nodded, though she froze as he mentioned of digging for treasure. "Wellll......" she laughed a bit. "I kind of get into trouble around the estate you know. I have a sweet tooth to say the sort, and well I got caught to many times in the kitchen. So I maid a big raid in the kitchen took as much sweet as I could and hide them around the castle just for a few lucky few that know of it." Which in all honesty the candy was her's alone, but she always shared with any around her. It was odd how much sweeter candy tasted when she had someone to share it with.
"Speaking of which!" she nosed the box, removing the silk from around it that protected it, and within the silk laid a small wooden box. A pretty basic box, clearly something given to her. As it would not suit the fancy world within the castle. "Here is one of my few favorite ones." she remarked as she opened the box and there laid multiple colored little squares wrapped in a thin like paper material. "Have you ever had taffy before?" she asked eyeing him curiously. "Go ahead and have one, they are really good! Made with fruits, and covered in powdered sugar to stop from sticking." She nosed the box closer towards him clearly wanting him to try a piece of it. "My favorite is the light pink ones, made with cherries." she giggled with delight. Frannie looked to Pax wondering if he liked sweets, maybe he was more of a fan of the salty like foods. Frannie though realized there was a lot she wanted to know about Pax, but nothing that would seem to matter to others, but to her meant the world. Like what was his favorite foods, and color, maybe favorite scent or favorite place to see. Oh yes that last one, maybe they both could show off their favorite place! Her tail wished happily as she nibbled on the side of her cheek a bit anxiously, but the excited kind.
