"Take your broken wings and learn how to fly again!"
The air had been inviting. The early morning sun beat down on his back, his large leathery wings stretched far to each side as he soared through the desert air. The wind tugged at his curly, messy hair with each beat of his wings, his head held high with a smile pulled tight across his lips. He was born for the sky. He was born to fly. He felt most at home when he was beyond the clouds, looking down upon the earth, everyone below him the size of mere ants.
Tucking his wings to his side, the stallion fell from the sky, his body rolling as he held his breath and closed his eyes, allowing the feeling of pure weightless falling the engulf his being. When one might be terrified of the approaching ground, Roland embraced it, opening his wings in fluttering leather at the last moment to allow the wind to catch him, spinning his lithe form around at the last moment, his hooves gracing the sand briefly before the breeze picked him back up again. His heart raced every time, his lungs heaving as his stormy green eyes lit up with excitement.
Nothing was more enticing than dancing with death.
With a huff, he landed into the sand, his hooves pressing soft prints into its embrace. The wind was picking up quite quickly, at a surprising rate, actually. Turning his gaze to the sky, the warrior's lips pressing together as his brow knitted, watching the wind gather bits of sand in the distance and spit it back out. He licked his lips, spitting grit to his hooves.
Roland had experienced sandstorms before, but none looked like the one that was trying to form before him. It was only a matter of seconds before the sky had turned dark, a wave of sand before him blocking out the sun as it towered in the painted stallion's direction. Where one might feel fear, Roland felt adrenaline. A smirk played across his lips as he pulled his thick aviator goggles over his narrowed eyes, daring the storm to overtake him.
"Come and get me!" The man shouted with a laugh, spreading his wings against the wind and leaping into the air. He struggled to get afloat, but soon used the wind to his advantage, soaring as fast as he could back toward the city. Of course, outflying a storm such as this was impossible. He should have known better. Sand quickly covered him, biting at his wings and pelt, threatening to fill his lungs. If it wasnt for his goggles, he would have lost his eyes.
He quickly landed.. well, crashed, back to the ground, gathering himself back up only for a gust of wind to push him back over again. Coughing, the stallion pulled a clawed wing over his mouth and face, trying to block out the raging sand as he slowly made his way toward a tall form in the distance: a guard tower.
He didnt know how long it took him to get there, but it felt like an eternity. Searching for the door's handle, he pulled it open with a grunt and spilled into the tower, the heavy door slamming behind him.
Roland pulled himself to his hooves, his ears ringing in the newfound silence. He shook out his scruffy coat, sand falling all around him. His knee had been scraped from his crash, but it was not bleeding. Just a scratch. Pulling his attention to his surroundings, dull green eyes gazed around the tower.
Well, he was here. Might as well explore.

Katarina Seroran Iron Hoof
Kat stood on guard, watching at the sandstorm grew ever closer. She had been watching it for the past few minutes as it grew ever closer, a raging giant silent on the horizon. She pinned her ears back, not pleased that it was heading towards the city. She watched as it came closer and closer, not straying from its target and it made her mood ever darker. Slowly she tore her eyes away from the swirling mass of wind and sand and started prepping the tower for the incoming storm. All of the windows were to be sealed shut and the cracks plugged with the cloth that was left in the tower for such occasions. Sand was hard enough to get out and she wasn't keen on sweeping it out after her shift.
Just as she was finishing, the storm hit. It was like a beast attacking the windows, making them rattle in the wind with the initial impact. She jumped, all the hairs on her back prickling, the sound bringing shivers up her spine. Always hated these darn storms, she thought to herself as she light a candle to combat the darkness of the now stifling tower.
She was left alone in the darkness with the wind howling it's fury outside. It almost sound like voices though it was probably her imagination. Well, until the door downstairs burst open with a loud clang and the clomp of foreign hooves.
Kat was instantly on guard, battle stance at the ready. No other sounds came to her, up there at the top of the tower, so she decided to make her way to where the intruder was. She crept toward the stairs, peering down into the darker depths of the towers' interior. She took a few steps, then stumbled with a curse. Realizing that she forgot the candle, and gave away her position, it was too late to go back now. Slowly making her way down the steps, as she reached the last turn, she shouted, "Who's down there? Make your presence known!"

"Take your broken wings and learn how to fly again!"
Darkness had fallen at the slam of the door, black engulfing his vision until his eyes had adjusted. He blinked wildly, pushing his goggles back up to his forehead. The ragged leather and glass disappeared within the crazy curls of his hair. His eyes finally adjusted, showing the outline of stairs to his right and a few closed up windows to his left. A shiver ran through his bones as a chill set in due to the absence of the sunshine. He was truly in the dark.
A voice suddenly sounded from above him, a jolt raging through the stallion as he startled, his heart pounding. The voice was that of a female's, her tone strong and daring. His hooves scraped the hard ground as he scrambled to try to find the source of the noise. His search found him at the steps, his gaze turned up to see the form of a pegasus glaring down upon him.
A lopsided smile took to his lips, his brow raised and ears flicked to the side. "Easy there, lass, im a friend." He chuckled, taking the steps toward her carefully, only needing to catch himself a few times with his painted wings against the towering stone walls. He paused a few feet away from the stranger, his eyes narrowing through the dark.
"Name's Roland, im a Fury. I was out checking the borders before this damn storm changed my plans." He chuckled, brushing past the winged mare on the narrow stairway and hopping up the rest of the way, his hooves echoing off the flat stair way. A candle lit the main room, flooding him with light the moment he stepped in to take a look around. Oh, sweet sweet light.
"It doesnt seem like it'll be passing any time soon. Seems like we'll be stuck together for a while." He continued, calling back over his shoulder. He was already keen to making himself at home, though his ears stayed locked on the rattling windows behind him as he turned to wait for the mare to join him. He had never been in one of these towers before, but they certainly werent as exciting as he thought they would be.
What a shame.
"Whats your name?" His bury tone called out once more, curiosity in his gaze.
