Life had flipped upside down the last few days. First there’s the issue with the wisps, then that damned vagabond witch got away, and now kirins were… real? Sure they had always been real, but kirins went extinct centuries ago. They were revered nearly on the same level as the gods. The stallion had grown up hearing stories of the great kirins and their exploits. And now he worked to protect one every day. But he had to say; the little princess was very different from the images he had created in his head as a colt. That said, if anyone came within a breath of that child he would not hesitate to end their existence then and there.
The chevalier wandered the city streets near the palace. He never wandered far, even in his off duty hours, but it was nice to get out of his armor and relax for a moment. Even if he never completely relaxed, one of the curses of being a chevalier, you’re never really completely relaxed. Light eyes flicked back and forth, watching people scurry this way and that.
Valore had always been an active city, especially in the Sol district near the palace, but the city had been alight with activity since the birth of the princess. People celebrated, others whispered about it perhaps being a bad omen, still other, shadier characters conversed in dark corners about how they could use the series of events to their own benefit. And that was only here in Aodh, not to mention the other nations.
Word had reached Valore of what had happened in Breim. To their king. Valerius was livid. He couldn’t believe he hadn’t been there. If only he hadn’t been assigned to that ludicrous mission in the swamp. He would have gone with the royal party and could’ve protected the king and the rest of the Aodhians who had gone. The stallion had been livid ever since he heard. But there wasn’t much he could do but fume until the king was back, in his own protective care where he could make sure nothing happened to him. Amadeus may be king, but he was still so young. And Valerius’ heart would sink to his stomach every time his sire would leap from a balcony to try and “fly”.
Astraea let out a soft yip, pulling the chevalier back to reality just before he came close to trampling over a group of ladies. He dipped his head and apologized, glowering at the white wolf. “You had to leave it to the last moment, didn’t you?” The canine snuffed, smuggling looking up at her companion. The stallion let out a huff, smirking at her. “You’re a real pain, you know that.” The wolf picked up her head and tail and plodded off, turning down a quieter road.
“Astraea,” the stallion called after, picking up a trot to follow. She always did this. Running off, shirking duties, abandoning him when she got bored. One hell of a familiar he’d managed to find. But he couldn’t blame her. She hated the city. Astraea would much prefer to be back at their outpost in the wilds. The stallion looked around, trying to find her, when he suddenly spotted a flash of white. The wolf was sitting next to a rather crumpled looking figure leaning against a stone wall.
“Advisor Bones?” the chevalier called, walking up toward the elder horse. “Is everything alright sir?”

Bones' head felt like it was far too full. There had simply been far too much commotion over the past few months for him to put up with. First the attack on the Crucible, Amadeus going to Breim and the sheer chaos that had erupted there, the unveiling of little Ingrid, the burning of slaves, the capture of vagabonds... by the gods it was all too much. The worry and the fretting was what really had Bones worn out though, his worry over the city and the future and by extension Amadeus and Ingrid and too many others to name.
Unfortunately, he could feel it deep in his bones, the need to rest, perhaps, to retire. Bones had always thought himself the type to work til he dropped, but now that he'd very nearly done just that he supposed some rest would do him well. He'd gone on a brief vacation outside Valore a couple of weeks ago, and while initially he'd felt much better upon his return to the city, he'd worn himself thin again. Anyone could see it, unfortunately enough. Over the past few months he'd greyed out significantly, his face and coat increasingly grizzled; he'd lost a significant amount of weight despite Rosies, his 'helper' as he liked to call her, diligent cooking. Bones appeared, for all intents and purposes, exhausted, and perhaps slightly unwell.
One of his few respites from his job and family and the stress that threatened to crush him was walking. Despite warnings from his physician that physical activity would do nothing to help his rapdily deteriorating joints and slightly less rapidly deteriorating general health (though it was definitely deteriorating nonetheless), Bones couldn't help but revel in a slow stroll around Valore.
However, tonight was one of those evenings where he found himself a bit too far from home with a bit too little energy in his bones. He had side stepped onto a quieter street, trying to find a small cafe or shop of some sort where he could rest for a moment before setting off toward home again, but he had no such luck, instead opting to merely lean against a wall, taking weight off his aching legs and hooves. A hard breath slipped from between Bones' whiskery lips as a white wolf strolled up next to him, unexpectedly sitting near him. One of his grey, worn ears flicked her way and he lifted his head just in time to hear someone behind him call out his name. Bones lifted his head a bit more, looking over one of his thin shoulders to see Valerius heading his way. He'd seen the young chap about the palace quite a few times, and as of yet had not yet had the chance to talk with him. Everyone always seemed far too busy, particularly lately.
"Valerius! EH'ss nice ta see ya this evenin'. Ah'm allrigh' jus' a bit winded is all. Wandered a bit too far." he admitted breathlessly, sound a bit embarassed. "Fergot a couple turns n such, y'know 'ow it is" he said. He doubted Valerius 'know how it was' forgetting turns, the chap was far far too young for that. Bones, on the other hand, was right in the time of life where memories sometimes slipped or fractured, and though it was few and far between, when it did happen, well it wasn't particularly flattering. He flipped his ragged little tail a couple of times and took a step toward Valerius.
"So 'ow 'ave you been? 'Aven't really 'ad much of a chance to talk to yeh lately." he commented, greying eyebrows rising slightly as he asked, his sleepy pale blue eyes curious and soft.

Valerius had always liked the elder advisor. He was soft spoken, kind, and genuine. And he truly cared for their monarch and the citizens of Aodh. His advice was sound and almost never wrong. But it was things like this that drove the chevalier mad. The elder stallion was nowhere near a condition to wander the streets of Valore alone at night. Now, Valerius would never say that, but that didn’t mean that the young stallion worried about Bones health and welfare. Honestly, it seemed he worried about everyone but himself, and the stress of it was driving him slightly insane.
The grullo stepped forward when he was addressing, a warm expression softening the usually stoic chevalier. “I’ve been well enough.” It was short, but the last few weeks had been… difficult. And it wasn’t appropriate for him to complain to a superior. Besides, it wasn’t anything he couldn’t handle. Although, there were a lot more people he wanted to protect now than there ever had been before.
“Shall I escort you home sir? Or would you prefer to find somewhere to rest?” he asked, the genuine concern clear in his voice. He didn’t like to admit it, but he was genuinely a big softy. Sure his exterior was hard and cold alike many chevaliers, but he couldn’t walk by when someone needed help. Especially those he knew and the royalty he was charged to protect, but recently he’d felt a strange urge to help even the slaves that were prolific through Valore.
Perhaps it was his newly revealed past that caused him to soften. To be easier on the slaves. He’d never really been harsh or cruel to slaves, his mother was a compassionate mare and she taught that to her son, but he hadn’t really ever given them the time of day. Now, it seemed like he’d almost go out of his way to help them. The constant bonfires of slaves and captured vagabonds, while always mildly irritating, now sickened him. But he couldn’t say anything. If he did, he risked everything. But was it right for him to stand by? Valerius hated how cowardly this issue made him feel.
A brush against his leg snapped him back from his moment of contemplation and he looked down at his familiar. Her bright amber eyes looked up at him with an annoyed glare. “Oh, Advisor Bones, this is my familiar Astraea. I’m sorry if she bothered you sir,” he said. “I know she can be rather… headstrong.” That earned a soft growl and a nip at his heel. Oh well, he was used to it. His attention turned back to the task at hand. He had to make sure Bones made it home safely. Sure he was off duty, but a chevalier was never really off duty. There was always something, someone who needed help, saving, or protection. And again, Valerius wasn’t one to say no.
While the stallion had always appreciated the old advisor, perhaps now there was something more to it. Bones was born a free horse, stolen into slavery. Valerius was born a slave and miraculously raised free. Maybe that dichotomy made him feel more attached to the elder fellow. As if he had served the years that the young stallion was due. Honestly, Valerius couldn’t know for certain. Nothing seemed certain any more. Nothing was clear or straight anymore. Why did the world have to be so complicated? Why couldn’t it be simple and clear-cut like it used to be? Black and white. Unfortunately, Valerius had begun to see the grey.

"ah, well, i appreciate yer concern, i'm 'bou' to 'ead 'ome if yeh wanna tag along?" Bones said, picking each of his cracked front hooves up in turn, stretching achy joints as best he could before heading off again. He flicked his ragged old tail and shook out his mane a bit, seeming as though he'd been daydreaming before Valerius' arrival. He likely had.
Bones had been seen less and less since the birth of little Ingrid. Some said he'd caught ill from one of the foreign dignitaries invited to the reveal of the small kirin, though noone could be sure, as reclusive as he'd been. Admittedly, he did look a bit peaky, his nose a bit pink, eyes a bit puffy and tired. Not enough to be of significant concern, but enough to be noticeable when looked at closely.
He had to admit, he didn't know Valerius very well. They hadn't talked in quite a while, and when they had talked, it hadn't really been very in-depth. Now, perhaps, Bones had a chance of turning that around, and to further expand his web of allies. Bones chuckled as Valerius apologized for his wolf, and shook his head slowly.
"Nae et's allrigh' she wasn't no bother ta me." he said with a soft, genuine smile. He chuckled and looked over the wolf for a moment. He needed to get himself a familiar one of these days. Bones started walking down the narrow little sidestreet, beckoning for Valerius to follow along. It was immediately clear that this would not be a quick trot home; Bones had enough trouble simply hobbling along at a snails pace, the braces on his front limbs the only reason he was upright at all. Bones was loathe to admit it, but arthritis was getting the better of him, despite medications designed to help.
"ANythin' new on your end? Well, anythin' I may not 'ave 'eard abou' already?" Bones asked Val casually, his soft blue eyes curious and alert. He was indeed, genuinely curious about the going ons of others of all walks of life, locations, personalities, and experiences. Bones had a sort of insatiable curiosity that was really only limited by his energy levels these days. He sucked in information like a sponge, and doled out the accumulated wisdom like a sage.

"I'd be happy to," the stallion said, grinning. He fell in step with the elder stallion, shortening his stride so as not to push Bones to try and walk faster. Valerius was perfectly happy to move at a slower pace. It seemed like he was always running a mile a minute through the day. Slowing down was nice, but it also allowed his mind to wander to things better left in the recesses of his mind. He distracted himself with watching the older horse, making sure to be aware of his movements in case he tripped or fell over.
The Advisor didn't look well. His face was flush and his eyes looked tired. It made sense. Bones had a difficult job. Especially in times like these. But Aodh needed him. He was kind and level headed, a perfect advisor of their young monarch. Valerius heeded his wisdom and advice. Not to mention he had a perspective on slavery not kept by many in Eithne. And with everything the young stallion now knew, he appreciated his point of view even more. Even though Valerius didn't know Bones very well, he certainly looked up to him. Which some might think ridiculous, especially his chevalier comrades. Why look up to such a weak, old advisor? But Valerius was more that just muscle.
"I'm glad." Blue eyes turned down to the white wolf following behind, still looking rather annoyed at the whole situation. "She has a tendency to be a bother." When asked if there was anything new that had happened to him, the stallion shifted uncomfortably. "Well I'm sure you've heard of the mission in the swamps." And the utter failure he and his team had been. "I suppose the peculiarity of the wisps' activity is still bothering me. Not to mention realizing my own capabilities." While in the swamp, Valerius had used a massive amount of his magical power, far more than he was accustomed to using. And it had taken a toll on him. The young stallion had nursed a headache for a few days after that stunt with the mud wave. He would have to train harder in order to overcome his limitations. Sure that wasn't all that was bothering the young chevalier, but he wasn't ready to discuss the other matters on his mind. Let alone with an advisor to the king.

Bones listened as Valerius spoke, one grey ear turned in his direction, grey brows lifted slightly. "Tell me more about th' wisps. Ah 'aven' had much of a chance ta 'ear abou' those. Most-a what ive been 'earin' about is the dragons in Breim and little Ingrid." he said, sounding more fascinated by wisps than many had been so far. His accent was thicker than usual, possibly due in no small part to some exhaustion.
Valerius was young, and Bones could sense his uncertainty, he could almost taste it in the air. In an effort to put him at ease, to get him to relax, Bones walked a bit closer, his thin shoulder nearly touching Vals. He found when he came closer to others, they often opened up just a hair more, and he hoped this was what would happen now. He yawned once, his yellowed, worn teeth visible for a moment, whiskers catching in the dim streetlight.

The proximity of the other stallion was something Valerius hadn't expected. He wasn't sure if Bones was perhaps feeling unsteady and wished to lean against him for support, or wished to offer support. Honestly Valerius was so accustomed to pushing people away and holding the weight of the world on his own that he felt uncomfortable for a moment. But seeing the older horse so comfortable with the closeness and watching him yawn tiredly made Valerius relax. If the advisor was this comfortable, there was no reason for the young stallion to feel any differently. Sure he was still a chevalier and he'd never be completely relaxed, but being able to walk comfortably down the street with the elder horse made him happy. It reminded him of childhood walks with his father.
"Well they were just... disappearing," the stallion began, recalling the memory of what he had seen to the front of his mind. "They simply blinked from existence, as if the kirins of ages past were vanishing from the world completely." Valerius shifted uncomfortably from the memory. "To be honest, sir, it was rather unsettling."

"Well, you do realize miss Ingrid is a Kirin? If those wisps really are the souls of departed kirins, and they're vanishing, perhaps that means they are reincarnating into our era." Bones mused quietly. "They may not be vanishing at all dear Val, in fact, they may be coming back to us. Boy that sounds pretty scary out loud." Bones visibly shuddered a little with a chuckle. "Noones ever seen a kirin til little Ingrid. But if they're all like her they can't be all that bad now can they?" he asked, one worn grey ear perking. Bones slowed a bit more; they were quite close to the Noble District by now, and his home wasn't too terribly far, but he stumbled nonetheless. The stress of the past year was very visibly catching up with him, he'd grown greyer, weaker, and noticeably thinner. Bones was aptly named, he always had been, but even now he seemed too thin, despite Rosie's well-cooked meals. The stumble didn't send his knees to the pavement, he caught himself, but it wouldn't have gone unnoticed. "Shoot, fer all I know, maybe they'll add some much needed 'ancient wisdom' to th' land" he chuckled, voice cracking, quick to keep talking. Goodness knows some wisdom would be nice he thought to himself, thinking of Amadeus' naivety. Bones was wise, but he wasn't immortal.

"I know that. Honestly it was quite a shock to come back to the city and hearing about the young princess for the first time," he said honestly, looking up to see the gates of the Noble District up ahead. "But if that's the case, and the wisps are disappearing to reincarnate the kirins, then there are quite a few of them headed our way." The stallion smiled, relaxing more into the conversation.
It was then that Bones stumbled. Valerius threw forward her leg, aiming to catch the elder horse in the chest if he fell, but Bones was able to catch himself. The chevalier slowed to the elder horses pace, looking over him concerned. It was true the advisor had always been troublingly thin, but it seemed as if everything going on had taken a toll on his health. Valerius' heart went out to him. After all, it should really be him in his position. Valerius quickly pushed that to the back of his mind and turned his full attention to Bones.
"Are you alright, sir?" he asked, genuine concern filling his voice. "Would you like to rest for a moment?" After a moment of thought the young stallion smiled. "It would allow us more time to converse." Hopefully the suggestion that they should rest wouldn't hurt Bones' pride. Valerius was simply concerned for his health. And he was interested in having a longer conversation with the old man. He was very intelligent and incredibly kind. And Valerius had never had much of a chance to have an extended conversation with him.

He slowed to a stop. "Yeah'm okay" he said after a moment, thinking, taking mental assessment of his energy level. Things were aching pretty bad, so he nodded, and very slowly lowered himself to the cobbles. "A rest would likely do good" Bones breathed, giving in to his bones' protests. He relaxed, and leaned against the wall of the nearby building. "As I was sayin tho, yeah seems if those are the souls of kirins re-entering our world, we sure do got a lot comin' i remember 'earin' legends abou' how many there are, that it was more than th' stars in th' sky. See I myself never wen' out there, never got the chance." He flicked his tail, and snorted, nostrils flaring. The streets were darkening further as the sun sunk below the horizon, shadows giving way to darkness lit by the moon. He wondered, and spoke "Well, you 'ave anythin' else you wanna talk about?" he asked, looking Val right in the eye.

Valerius followed Bones, sitting next to him and leaning against the stone wall. Astraea padded over and laid at their hooves, amber eyes lazily falling shut. Vigilant blue eyes watched as labor slaves busied themselves with lighting the street lamps and the evening crowd came from their houses. The city was transitioning into it's night routine. He turned to Bones and smiled contentedly. He was glad the advisor had agreed to a rest. It was obvious he was unwell, though there wasn't anything Valerius could do about it. He truly hated how powerless he could feel some times.
"Well I wouldn't doubt the legends to be true. There were countless wisps. We could be in for quite the population boom," the stallion chuckled slightly and his ears turned in attention to Bones next question. What did he want to talk about? Hmm... "How's His Majesty? I heard about what happened in Briem..." Valerius snorted and his brow furrowed. He was so aggravated that he had been sent to the swamp instead of with the royal convey. He could've protected him. He could've done something. Anything. It was really frustrating. And seeing Amadeus in the state he was when he returned filled Valerius will anger.
The stallion sighed, trying to release the wave of anger rolling through him. Valerius couldn't help it. Amadeus was just... he was the king. That's why. It had to be why. He was a chevalier after all. It wasn't that the king was small and weak and defenseless, not unlike the advisor he was sitting with. Valerius had to be careful. The more horses he got attached too, the more he'd have to protect. And in the end, he knew he couldn't protect them all.

Bones sighed heavily. "He's fine. I think he's finally coming to terms that he can't just play around with this king thing all day. Yes he's the king, yes he's got money and can do whatever he wants. But he can't do whatever he wants, and I think he's finally seeing the consequences. I can tell it hurts him. It's weighing heavy on his heart and on his mind. But noone said the crown was light." Bones had to admit, some were built to rule, others had to work at it, and Amadeus definitely would have to work at it. But Bones could feel change on the air. "I cant help but feel like theres a coup coming. The people here aren't happy, especially after the Breim incident. I know I could fix it, but noone would listen to the changes an old man has to say. Not now at least." He sighed, and pursed his lips, whiskers bunching. "My opinions arent.... well they're not popular, by Aodhian standards, lets just say that." he said, sounding a bit tired.

Hearing that Amadeus was struggling weighed heavy on Valerius' heart. The poor boy. No... he was king. He couldn't think of him as a child. And yet... the stallion sighed. Too many things were too difficult. He saw Amadeus often, would catch him after catastrophic flight attempts, would watch as he and Frannie would play in a courtyard. He was his king, but at the same time he was just a child. It was such an annoying paradox. Valerius only hoped he could be there for his monarch during this trying time.
With the mention of the whispers of a coup Valerius snorted angrily. "I won't let anyone near him," he nearly growled, forgetting his manners and who he was talking too. "Anyone who tries will meet my blade." The stallion suddenly realized the situation and began feeling very embarrassed. "Forgive me sir. I shouldn't say such indelicate things. As for your opinions, I'm afraid I'm uneducated in politics and economics, but the king appreciates your counsel. He'll listen to you. Whether or not he'll act on your counsel is another matter."

"Oh don't worry about bein' indelicate. gods know i'm the epitome of indelicate" he laughed dryly. "im glad to hear youve got his back too. Youve got the brawn that i'll never have" he said good naturedly. He was right. Valerius was well muscled and big and Bones looked like a good breeze could shatter him. He laughed aloud, "yeah, he'll hear it but does he actually listen? More importanly, will he heed it? I can't tell what he's going to do anymore" he said with a sigh, shaking his head. He seemed at a loss for what to do, which was understandable, but still frustrating as all heck. Bones flicked his tail and watched the city come back to life at night, the lights something he usually didnt see. Bones usually went to bed very early, for it often took him a long time to actually fall asleep.

"He may not listen, but he'll always hear you," Valerius said and smiled, remembering something his own father had always said to him. "'A child always hears their fathers voice. The older they get, the less often they listen.'" It was one of his fathers' favorite tidbits of wisdom. The blacksmith was always full of sayings like that, always spouting off about this thing or that. The chevalier remembered how wise he remembered him being. Valerius had only been a child when the old stallion passed, but he couldn't help but miss him terribly. And yet, if he had known the truth, would he have accepted being Valerius' father at all?
The chevalier turned to Bones and grinned. "He's growing up. He'll come into his own and I have no doubt he'll be a great king, remembered to ages to come." He said it with such sincerity, such certainty, because he believed it. Sure Amadeus was fearful and small and weak willed now, but he was kind and eager. Valerius had no doubt he would become one of the greatest kings Aodh had ever seen.

"well" he chuckled "im not his dad. Not biologically, he knows that" Bones listened to Valerius for a moment and nodded. "Well, y'know I hope you're right." He unfolded his long, skinny forelimbs and stretched slightly, shoving his front end upward. He was going to get up. Bones yawned, flashing his yellowed teeth again, he seemed tired. "I oughta get 'ome. I'm already out later than usual, don' wanna worry Rosie" he nodded, flicking an ear before staggering to all four hooves. In truth it was getting a tad late, the sky had darkened, the lights had been lit, the nightcrowd was out. Bones probably should get home at some point before it got too dark.

Valerius wanted to say something. About how being a biological father didn't matter. After all, his own father hadn't been his biological sire, but that didn't matter to him. But he knew he couldn't. Because no one could know. As the elder stallion stood Valerius followed suit, Astraea grumbling as she stretched and stood. The stallion smiled and stepped up next to Bones, sure to be close enough to catch him in case anything happened. "Very well sir. I'd be honored to escort you the rest of the way to your home if you will allow me." Formal as always. Sometimes it seemed like hierarchy was engrained into the young chevalier's bones. And to be honest, it kind of was.

Bones sighed and nodded, that crooked smile gracing his grizzled face once again. "ever the gentleman. yeah that's prolly a good idea. if i told yeh not to come id fall and break a hip" he laughed dryly. He set off, slow as usual, toward home. The cobbles glowed in the light of the streetlights, casting shadows all over the city. As they reached the Noble district, the streets quieted further, and huge mansions began to spring up behind thick brick walls. Bones home was very close to the palace, but int he shadow of the gleaming structure, it was dwarfed. Bones home was small, though not as small as he'd like, and resembled a commoners house, not a Nobles. there was no wrought iron gate, no gold, no silver, not even a single statue. Just a lonely wooden gate and a lopsided brick wall with ivy. But it was home. Home wasn't a mansion for Bones, home was where the heart was. "Well, 'ere we are. Thanks fer th' walk home. We should do this again sometime, 'opefully when i'm feelin' a bit better" he said, sounding quite tired.

"Thank you sir. That means a lot coming from you," he said and followed the advisor, remaining close to him so that he wouldn't break a hip as he had so lightly put it. The transition into night was quick, but as they left the busier district, it grew quiet. Valerius kept vigilant. Sure the Sol district was probably one of the safest places in all of Hireath, but one could never be to careful. Especially after the crucible incident. Even so it wasn't long before they made it to the advisors home. It was small, humble, at least compared to the other mansions in the area. Honestly, he was surprised such a small mansion even existed so close to the palace. But the fact that such a high level advisor would live in such humble quarters made Valerius like Bones even more. Not many horses in Aodh were so modest. Valerius turned to the elder horse and dipped his head in a respectful bow. "I'll be sure to pray that you feel better soon then, sir," the stallion said warmly and gave him a final grin before turning and heading back in the direction of the Valiant district, Astraea close on his heels.
