NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE
Late evening in New Valore, autumn 1701 Ranzir has set out to patrol the streets of the Capital like so many times before, whereas Taavetti has suddenly gone missing.
(Takes place right after Taavetti's transformation.)

RANZIR Ranzir sighed, wordlessly entering the quiet alleyway, his head low and eyes wide as he kept following the familiar patrol route. Perhaps he should have taken Verna with him after all, that pesky Furia, but his pride had gotten the better of him yet again. It was too late to regret now though - and what could even happen? He would be fine, like always. Maybe. The twin moons were yet to rise, but the night was quiet in the softly lit Sol District - just as it should be - yet an odd feeling had begun to stir in his chest that the Chevalier couldn't seem to shake. A fearful thought, but one that he would need to keep under the wraps or this night shift would turn out to be a long one. Still, the very thought of his colleague going missing, and especially one he had grown so familiar with, didn't leave the weary redhead be. It wasn't like Taavetti to disappear without a trace, a noble brat or not, but for better or worse, the Captain had deemed that there was no need to search for them. Not that any of them had the time either. Their whole standing army's hands were full as is - war or no war - and Ranzir knew that too. The unicorn turned another corner, abruptly stopping as a fountain carved out of red marble came into his view. A surprised, uncharacteristically meek smile spread to his face. It had been a while since last time he'd been patrolling this part of the town, and his worries momentarily forgotten, the unicorn approached the fountain. Perhaps he could linger here for a moment until- A sudden noise grabbed his attention. Alert, Ranzir spun around to meet whoever was creeping about the desolate square, his scratched armor gleaming in the dark.

Taavetti
All and all, things had gone utterly to shit. Taavi had been suspecting for a while now that his life was on the precipice of falling apart, and now he was all but certain that was true. Ignacio, the bastard, wasn't done having a laugh at him, apparently. First it was kirins just poofing into existence, then it was those kirins forming an army to terrorize them all --not to mention them killing that child-- and now... this. He'd woken from his now often troubled sleep to a splitting headache. At first he'd thought it just a migraine, but it hadn't taken him long to notice the source of the pain to be two shiny new antlers curving out from his skull.
He had written a note as he'd stumbled from the barracks on newly cloven hooves, struggling not to trip over the furry snake of a tail he owned now. He couldn't remember what he'd written, exactly, something about becoming sick and going home to see the family doctors. He figured he'd get an earful for it when he returned, but then again he was a kirin now, so maybe his senior officer would bow to him instead. The thought alone made Taavi's stomach roll, and he bit his lip to fight back the nausea, only to hiss in pain when a sharp fang drew blood. That was another thing to get used to now, he supposed. It was disgusting, all of it making him feel dirty, but scales and horns and fangs could not be washed away.
"You know what? Fuck you." He grumbled to a small statue of Ignacio, carved from marble, to his right as he moped about the small and all but abandoned court yard. Apparently he wasn't the only one who had the same idea as he heard hoof steps coming his way. In a stroke of absolute genius, he decided the best course of action to avoid having to face someone was to dive head first into the nearest bush. Unfortunately for him, he had forgotten for probably the tenth time since he'd gotten them, that he had antlers. Antlers which promptly got caught in the bush, and causing a loud rustling as he rectified the situation. In doing so, though, he did catch sight of the newcomer, clear as day with his kirin night vision, his reptilian pupils blown wide. The first small sense of calm he'd felt since waking washed over him as he recognized Ranzir, one of only a hoof-full of equine he'd expect to understand his anger.
Slowly Taavi rose and started across the yard towards the other chevalier, unsure how far Ranzir's own vision stretched in the dark, and not wanting to startle him.
"Ranzir..." He called out quietly, "Something's...happened."

RANZIR He knew that voice. "Taavi?" The unicorn called to the dark, both disbelief and relief apparent in his voice. A quiet gasp escaped his mouth as his friend finally stepped into view - only that Taavetti wasn't the tall horse Ranzir had been expecting to see, not anymore. "What-" He mumbled softly, not noticing his tail curling up against his ankle. The unicorn's surprised face was like an open book as he stared at the kirin, mulling over his next words in silence - brows furrowed, mouth hanging open ever so slightly. Something had happened, alright, but what really caught the unicorn's eye was the spooked look on the young Chevalier's face. Tentatively he stepped closer. There was not much the unicorn could do about his resting bitch face, but the genuine concern in his gaze wasn't hard to miss, not if you knew to look for it. The kirin's dilated pupils were admittedly an unnerving sight this up close, but Ranzir wouldn't let this restlessness reach his voice. He couldn't, not when Taavi was already... Oh, to be snappy with his words like his sister. "Didn't know you were into gardening." Ranzir hummed and reached to yank off a leaf from one of Taavetti's tines. A million questions were swirling in his mind, though at least this sudden change of skin explained the abrupt disappearance - somewhat. One could almost feel the nervousness in the air and while side-eyeing the fountain, he added with a much more straightforward tone, but his words quickly shed their typical bluntness: "What the hell were you thinking anyway? I- ... I mean, how did you... What even happened?"

Taavetti
Some tension left Taavi's form at Ranzir's obvious concern. He didn't think the other stallion would have been much to gawk or to begin praising Ignacio at the sight of a horse-turned-kirin, but it was a relief to actually see someone understanding his anger. He managed an awkward chuckle when the unicorn approached and pulled a leaf from his antlers, his face heating in embarrassment. This really wasn't the sort of scenario he'd imagined being in that would land him in a moonlit garden with Ranzir. Not that he'd imagined being in a moonlit garden with Ranzir at all. Or had a dream about it. Or several dreams. Nope.
Taavetti ducked his head a bit to avoid eye contact, very aware of how closely they were standing now. His ears pinned for a moment at the light scolding, but really it sounded more like something Ranzir was saying because he had no idea what to say, rather than actually accusing him of something. Taavi dipped his head in a shrug, "I wasn't thinking anything. Just woke up like...this-" he flicked his tail for emphasis, the furry thing kicking up a few leaves, "And I just...I guess I panicked. Wouldn't you?" He scanned Ranzir's expression, then tried a smile to lighten the mood, "Though you're already a unicorn, so you're kinda used to stuff growing out of you." he gestured to the other's own horn and the gemstones climbing up his shoulder.
"I don't really know what happened, or how. If I did, I'd already have fixed it." He finished, once again growing bitter. This wasn't fair, of all the horses to go around turning into lizards, at least it ought to have been one who wanted to be one!
