(This is a private rp between me and Jennycallie ) Setting: Kathra returns to her home, bringing the portion of her parent's Apana herd that had been in the northern pasture back with her. Unbeknownst to her, War Lord Hira, her cousin, has traveled to the young mare's home to talk with Kathra about becoming a Valkyrie. This takes place after the events of Chapter 1. Whistle, click, whistle, whistle
The young unicorn galloped alongside the bleating apana, whistling and clicking to keep them in line. Normally she wouldn't be alone on this, but her brother had to take the eastern flock back to the main farm, so she was stuck with taking the northern flock back herself. Of course a snow leopard had to show it's face when I was alone.
Not that it was a problem of course, Kathra prided herself in her ability to handle combat situations, but still, an irritation nonetheless. The offending creature had startled the flock as they got out of the foothills, and Kathra had been pushing herself to take the thing out before it killed one of the flock. She'd managed, but the ram of this flock had taken a few hits. The wounds would scar, but he would live, the unicorn had managed to get there in time. Now dead, the snow leopard was draped over the young horse's back, blood dripping from the gash on it's neck she'd inflicted. Choosing to bring the body back had made her job harder, the flock wasn't eased by the scent of blood, but the beast would make a fine pelt, so she'd flung it onto her back and struggled as she would back to her parents ranch. Thankfully they hadn't had any more complications, and Kathra was able to see her home cresting over the horizon. WC: 237

Hira and Arro | War Lord and gryphon
"Don't cause any trouble- these are not wild Apana-" Hira called after her departing gryphon, as he launched from her neck and took wing. "Arro- NO TROUBLE!" Hira called to his retreating back, but the gryphon gave no sign of notice, save for one arrogant twitch of his long tail. Hira rolled her eyes, her exasperated sigh puffing a cloud of vapor into the cold air. The pony continued walking along the path, picking her away absently around hidden rocks, still buried in the snows of early spring. The snows would be melting soon; spring was upon Onea. Hira found herself relieved; it had been a more strenuous winter than normal, and it seemed as if the entirety of her sprawling herd had sunk into a collective state of uncharacteristic irritation, as the cold months wore on.
Hira shook her mane, dispelling the dark thoughts with some effort. Spring was coming, and she was out of her fortress, the fresh air lifting her mane and the beating heart of the earth resonating in her hooves. She could not, would not dwell on petty concerns while outside on a day like this.
Olive eyes cut to the side as she spotted a tuft of early spring grass, struggling valiantly through the encasing snow. Hira considered stopping and grazing a while; but no. She was on a mission, and even more so, she did not wish to bring down the ire of her Shields by returning late. They were more overbearing than normal, with the events of the new year still fresh in everyone's minds-
Hira shook her mane again, more forcefully, cursing the politics of her position. If she had known that the position of War Lord would someday ruin her ability to enjoy a simple spring day, she perhaps would have been less likely to accept- nay, force, the mantle upon herself.
"No use wishing on the stones of the past," Hira grumbled to herself. She crested a knoll, and let loose a sigh of relief: she had reached her destination. With a flick of her ivory tail, the pony broke in to a lilting trot, enjoying the wind as it lifted her mane from her neck. From somewhere in the distance, she heard Arro's distinctive skree. He was enjoying the day as well.

Kathra | Soon to be Valkyrie
Soon enough the young unicorn had reached the pastures where the apana were to be corralled. With a few clicks and whistles she managed to run the whole flock into the fenced area and locked the gate behind them. She trotted over to the nearby hutch where the family stored extra feed and wool shears for when shearing season came. With a quick shake the corpse of the snow leopard fell to the floor with a dull thud. She'd deal with skinning it later, first she had to check up on the tools inside.
After several minutes of checking over the tools and buffing the few that had the beginnings of rust forming on them she picked up a knife they stored in the shack for the purpose of skinning any predators that came around when she heard the call of a gryphon. She paused for but a moment, before setting the dagger down and sticking her head out the door, looking around. The flock seemed agitated, the males were patrolling around the perimeter, keeping the nervous females as close to the center of the pasture as they could. With narrowed eyes, Kathra looked up, confused as to why a Gryphon was out hunting at this time of day.
Scanning the sky, she could see the gryphon approaching from a distance. The speck grew and grew, and soon appeared to be much bigger than the average pygmy. She heard the creature cry out again, and the gears in her mind quickly started turning. A flash of gold colored feathers confirmed that this was no wild gryphon.
Gods damnit Auro, you terror of apana. What are you doing so far from Hira? The mare thought with a snort.
Forgetting all about the snow leopard she had yet to skin, Kathra galloped out of the shack and into the field next to the pasture. She focused on him, his form, specifically his ability to make his species's call. She felt the muscles in her throat slowly shift to match that thought. Once she felt the muscles settle, she opened her mouth and loosed her own cry, mimicking her cousin's familiar's skree.
If he could play games, so could she.

Hira and Arro
Hira's stride paused, her tail flaring behind her, as she heard not Arro's distinctive cry, but another gryphon's. Ah, hell, Hira thought, and leapt into as long strided of a canter as her pony legs could achieve. She might not ever outrace the taller equines of the herd on level ground, but across jagged open country, Hira fairly flew, her cloven hooves seeking out optimal terrain with deft ease. Her earth manipulation blessing didn't hurt, either. As Hira's strides brought her closer to her destination, a hut and behind it, a large fenced pasture, the mare once again slowed, eyes widening in surprise, before she burst out laughing.
For his part, Arro had nearly fallen out of the sky, arresting his plummet mid-dive towards the milling apana to hover, wings beating the air heavily as he turned his head sharply, golden eyes searching for the other gryphon he had heard. He could see nothing but apana, a strange mottled unicorn, and Hira. Arro lashed his tail, then dove again, landing on the fence post in a spray of wood chips as his claws gouged a hasty perch. Feathers fluffed, lifting all around his body and even the pseduo-crest along his head, Arro clicked his beak, then let loose a louder, more challenging scree, utterly ignoring the apana.
"Ho, cousin," Hira called, her light eyes twinkling with mirth. "I would apologize for the feathered terror, but it seems you've quite gotten your revenge." She slowed to an easy walk, her amused glance taking in again the agitated Arro. "Where on Hireath did you learn to mimic a gryphon like that?" Hira asked, halting. She stomped a hoof in belated greeting, still far too amused with Arro's discomfiture. It served him right.

Kathra | Soon to be Valkyrie
Kathra's ears flicked up as she heard laughter coming her way. Turning her head she saw Hira approaching with a twinkle in her eye. The unicorn coughed a couple times as her vocal cords returned to normal and she trotted up to her cousin with a grin on her face, shooting a mischievous grin towards the thoroughly miffed gryphon. She paused and stomped her hoof in response to the war lord's greeting.
"Ho Cousin to you as well!" She whinnied, trotting up closer to the other mare. "Yes it seems I have, I've never seen that little devil drop in shock quite like that before."
Upon asking where she learned it, Kathra puffed out her chest in a sort of pride, eyes sparkling with joy. "Well, since birth actually. The mother of our herd Kaia chose to bless me when mother was carrying me. I can shapeshift." She coughed again before blushing a bit as she caught herself, pawing at the ground with a hoof.
"Well, I will be able too once I practice enough, I can't do much more than small changes like vocal cords, gills, eyes, noses, and only one thing at a time really." She looked back up and smiled. "I just had to focus on Auro enough and well, my body responded."
"I was wondering what he was doing so far away from you, but it seems like you weren't that far off, what brings you here Hira?"

Hira
"I was unaware of your Blessing," Hira said in some surprise, jade eyes flickering across Kathra's colourful, muscled body with interest and appraisal. "Blessed at birth, what an honor. Kaia must see greatness in your future." And Kaia was not the only one; Hira too was drawn to this young mare, and not only due to bonds of blood.
She had met young Kathra only once, during the darker, tumultuous times that marked Hira's rise to power, when Kathra's family had visited to pay their respects and condolences... and to retrieve Nastok's body. Hira had not enjoyed a close relationship with her uncle, but he had been kind to her. And he had been family.
And now his granddaughter, her own cousin, stood before her, with all the fierce wildness of Onea burning in her gaze, and none of the passive, quiet timidity of a "typical" War Forged mare. Hira had heard as much, from sources closer to her distant family, and had made the journey in person to verify the claims. Or disprove them.
Hira eyed her cousin for another moment, then swept her gaze over the milling Apana, the rough, remote countryside. She did not answer the question immediately.
"How does this life suit you?" Hira asked instead, her tilted head indicating the bleating Apana. "Do you enjoy it? I do not think I would have the patience for herding such wily creatures, although," and her eyes cut to the still fluffed and muttering Arro, "I do have my hooves full enough at the moment." She smiled, but her eyes were sharp as they returned to the chimera mare. "What does your heart want, Kathra?" It was a question she asked every potential Valkyrie, whether the young mare knew she was being considered for the position it or not.
And Kathra had been considered for a long while now.

Kathra | Soon to be Valkyrie
Kathra thought on her questions. "Well... It helps out my family. Murdock can do a lot, but he certainly can't work the whole herd with the same efficiency as when we work together. It's not ideal, but I scratch out what fun I can." She pawed the ground with a cloven hoof as she thought. The words of her grandfather floated back to her. Words expressing his belief that ever since the day his sister-in-law had said she was chosen by Kaia to carry a blessing that she was destined for something great. Something that would change the course of the herd even after his time.
"But..."
She looks up and meets Hira's gaze for but a moment before turning her head to look towards where they had buried Nastok, a strong oak beginning to grow from the grave site. A tree that still had hidden potential, that was still able to bend and move as it wished. Slowly she walked over to where it was, on the edge of the apana fields. A moment passed as she felt a small breeze pass through her mane, the gears in her mind turning as she gazed down at the sapling. What did her heart want? She knew she was helping her family by staying here, but the words of her grandfather had never left her, and had almost seemed to grow stronger in the years since his passing. She sent out a small prayer to Kaia before turning away and returning to the warlord.
"But I feel as if I am meant for more. My grandfather said my blessing was a sign that I was meant for something, something different than normal mares in our herd. I have a feeling he was talking about you, cousin. Him and your father spoke of you often, in my filly-hood. And I feel like there's a reason our mountain mother is a mare, something our herd-mates seem to forget."

Hira | Warlord
The pony had never been particularly (or even slightly) adept at concealing her thoughts and emotions, and thus Hira figured that Kathra might well read on her face the disappointment that Hira felt. Another mare unable to see past the confines of her own familial life and duties... Inwardly, Hira sighed, preparing to head back out and rejoin with her retinue. She had hoped her young cousin would share more than just blood ties, but... so it went. Hira lifted her head, about to speak, when-
"But..."
The words lingered between them in the chill spring air, and Hira felt her interest rise again, despite herself. She waited, the breeze tugging at her unruly forelock and tail. Kathra had turned away, something unreadable in her gaze, and Hira watched her go with interest. Arro tensed and made motions as if to follow the chimera, but a quiet "no" from Hira stopped him, though he fixed her with a baleful golden eye in reproach. Both mare and gryphon were still and silent as they watched Kathra stop at a young tree, bow her head in thought. Or prayer? The wind picked up again, lifting Hira's thick mane from her neck, and she felt a sort of electric charge in the air as Kathra moved back towards her, as if the world held its breath in anticipation. But for what?
With each word her cousin spoke, Hira felt her heart lighten. Ah, now this was more like it. At Kathra's last words, Hira snorted a laugh.
"Well, I do my best to keep reminding them," she said dryly. "Me, and my Valkyries." She watched Kathra closely now, jade eyes shrewd. "Female warriors, carefully selected and trained by myself, to remind all of Onea that it is a mare whom we pray to, and who shaped us. And," she flicked he tail arrogantly, "who leads us."
She and Kathra stared at each other for a heavy moment.
"Would you like to join us?"

The valkyries, yes she had heard whispers of them. A group of females being trained to show the herd that women were just as good as men, that it was the goddesses who had shaped the land, and that mares had traditionally ruled the herd. She felt her heart race as Hira extended the offer, was this it? Was this what her grandfather had predicted?
She felt a strength in her soul upon a moment's thought. Almost as if Nastok was there, next to her, gently nudging her forward with his gentle touch. Her cloven hoof stomped on the ground as she met her war-lord's gaze.
"I do." She said firmly, chest puffed out in pride.
But of course she couldn't just leave without notice. Her brother and parents were still a thing, after all.
"If you can wait but a moment, I'll go collect my things and we can set off today."
The young mare turned and galloped back towards the house, hooves pounding against the soft earth. It would be about fifteen minutes before she would return, saddlebags packed and with her parents in tow. Her father, Rurik, was comedically short, being a welsh mix like Hira, when standing next to his Belgian/TWH wife. But both had a certain strength to them as they approached. The welsh unicorn bowed his head to Hira as the two stood next to their daughter.
"Cousin, it is an honor to see you again. Kathra says you invited her to be a Valkyrie, yes?" He said, his eyes shining.
