Spectra | Breim Outcast
Spectra stared at the jeweled raft.
Teruo’s body was just being laid down upon it by a few of his caretakers who had aided him in the hospital before he died. Spectra might have offered to help, she may have, if she felt anything other than frozen. One moment he was laughing at her insecurities as he was being wheeled into surgery, the next he was gone. At first, she thought the healer was just trying to get on her nerves, but even she couldn't ignore the blatant look of sadness in the eyes of the other mare.
It wasn't supposed to happen this way. This was never supposed to happen.
Teruo had promised that once he was walking again, he would take her to the Skytop forest, a place he had gone to just once in his life. He said would even take her to see Sterling, just so that she could see the strange horses that made up the Kawaru. He wanted to teach her everything, and it would have been far too hard without the full use of his legs. He could only go a couple of hours before he needed to rest his forelegs. Even if the cart was top of the line, he still suffered from sore spots and sores themselves if he was out and about for too long.
Not that it mattered anymore. Teruo was gone, and she was once again alone in a world she didn't understand, in a world that didn't understand her. She had to look away, unsure of these strange emotions rising inside of her, trying to ignore the sad emotions of those around her.
Since Teruo had no known family, there were some friends of his that had come, including a mare that Spectra recognized and was thoroughly unhappy with. She had offered words of remembrance, flagrantly glancing at Spectra every so often as she spoke them. Words about how kind and generous he was, giving all he had and asking for nothing in return. How he had gone out of his way to offer his home to an Outcast and selflessly taught them everything they needed to know. She spoke so eloquently, that Spectra felt that maybe she was just being incensed for no reason.
Except that the mare didn't even bother to use Spectra's name.
Spectra could feel flames itching to ignite around her hooves. She felt so angry, it was all she could do to keep herself in check. If she lost herself now, in front of all these horses, she'd not only be literally extinguished, but she'd just get herself thrown in jail. No, she would not allow some petty mare to get under her scales in an attempt to get her to cause a scene. She would not betray Teruo so stupidly. Ignoring the mare, she swallowed a thick lump in her throat and continued to stare in dismay at the stallion's body.
Before long, the priest of Argus had some final words to say and the begemmed raft was pushed into the river. The group of horses were left to watch Teruo's lifeless body as it floated away from them, ultimately disappearing into the darkness beyond. The Kirin wondered where Teruo's body would end up, but she didn't have the heart to ask such an insensitive question. Maybe someday, long after the fact.
But she did manage to ask one question, one question that ultimately needed to be answered. A question she had realized she would never have had to ask if Teruo were still here.
"What is to become of me?" She spoke softly, her voice wavering, avoiding that particular mares gaze. She needed another sponsor, but she didn't think anyone here would want to do so, especially that other mare. There was a distinct fear that she would be locked up if no one could be found to help her, and she knew she would probably just go crazy behind bars. "I don't know what to do." She found herself admitting, hating herself for allowing herself to succumb to these feelings in front of these other, different, horses.
