She felt the weight of a hoof on her skull, heard herself scream, a flash of pain as she was crushed, and then instant darkness.
And like blinking, her eyes opened, but instead of seeing the blazing hatred of a unicorn’s eyes, she found the burning of the sun from overhead. All at once her body was shocked, forcing her to take great gulps of air, some of them consisting of sand. She spat and sputtered, her heart fluttering and racing as she struggled to come to grips with what had just happened. Had it happened? She could have sworn she was just being murdered by an angry unicorn. She remembered following a rainbow kirin into battle. She remembered her destiny.
But now she was lying in the middle of a sandy sea, the sun scorching her pale body from overhead. And there was something else that was wrong. Something else that was not quite right. Limbs that did not belong to her jolted at her sides, flashing her with white feathers. She let out a startled cry as she tried to rise again, but found that she was pinning her own body to the ground with her weight.
The white, feathered limb was attached to her.
She lay for a moment, her sides heaving, her eyes shut tight from the light of her Gods sun. Her legs felt like jelly, the odd sensation of wings twitching against her sides just felt downright wrong. She was a Kirin! Why did she have wings? What was going on? Where were her parents? And why was she in the middle of some godforsaken desert? She was a child of fire, but she didn’t particularly like this predicament she was in.
Reopening her eyes, she once again struggled in her bed of coarse grit, and this time, she managed to struggle to her feet.
Legs shaking from the effort, she finally got a good look at herself. Everything was normal. Everything but the wings and the feathers. It took her a good 10 minutes to figure out how to even locate the wing muscles, and it took her over an hour after that to even understand how to move them voluntarily. But she was so weak, all she could really do is let the twitching limbs hang limp against the ground to carve lines into the sand.
She looked around her at the ocean of sand. She could see signs of life in the form of trees and succulents, but other than that, there was just some stone formations and more sand. She turned in a little circle, scanning the horizon for some sort of sign. But nothing came. There was no one there, she was all alone. A whimper escaped her lips as she finally just randomly chose a direction and started walking.
A few days had passed.
She had managed to find sustenance in the form of the random succulents she stumbled across and forced herself to try out, and the only moisture she had received had come from those plants. She couldn’t find any pools of water, and more than a dozen times had she run in a random direction because she swore she saw water in the distance. But all she really did was tire herself out more. Make her more hungry, and definitely more thirsty.
But mostly more insecure.
It was nearly a week later, and the child was growing weaker. Less plants meant less food and even less water. She had long since learned to ignore the swirling mirages that promised a waste of time and energy. Energy that she had little off. Most of it was spent walking, panting, twitching her wings. Eventually she was just on autopilot, wandering in a straight line until she had to rest.
And this was possibly one of those times she didn’t think she was going to be able to get up again. She collapsed underneath a jutting rock, slumping in the minute shade of the rusty colored stone. Her breathing was labored, her tongue dry and cracked almost as bad as her lips. She was exhausted, hot, and she wished she could literally drown herself in a stream for a few minutes to rehydrate.
She couldn’t believe her incredibly bad luck.
First she is pretty sure a unicorn killed her, she wakes up in an unknown land, then she slowly dies again from dehydration. If she had any water left in her body, she likely would have started bawling her eyes out then and there. It didn’t stop her from dry-sobbing though. It was weak, but anyone walking nearby, if there even was anyone nearby, might have been able to hear her hoarse crying.
And wouldn’t she believe her luck then?
Someone was nearby to hear her.

The day was harsh and the sun unforgiving. The world bent under the heat’s miasma and Diana only huffed. Coat sticky with sweat and muzzle tinged red with sunburn, she hauls her saddlebags higher and makes her way back to Alhaj a few hours at most. While she would usually wait till later in the evening to travel, she itches to return to her children’s sides.
Soleria had grown more rambunctious and was becoming a little dust devil. Tapioca following close behind and being an adorable fleshy wall that nipped at hinds that came to close to his mother of sister. Suffice it to say the two were becoming hoof fulls and she was always worried about them nipping the wrong heels or knocking over the wrong flower pot.
Diana had trekked into the desert to find herbs and other materials, the stash she once had burned to a crisp before the sacking of Osulas, now returning with saddlebags laden with the desert’s medicinal riches.
She was hesitant to take a stop in any form, the thought of her home pulling her ever onwards. To her children, to her Nest, to the hope of seeing her lover again. So she only hiked up her hood and reselutley put one hoof in front of the other.
Then the wind carried the sound of heart wrenching sobs to her ears.
Her steady pace slowed then fell completely. Her head swiveled and ears flicked about, face twisting in confusion as the sound bounced off the stone around her. She knew it was no mirage, saliva still held thick on her tongue. With a sense of urgency, Diana tracked the sound. Following her ears and the traces of equine presence in the sand.
Who would be out this far?
She continued to follow until it grew louder, just beyond a ridge. With a huff, she broke into a quick trot. She crested over that last ridge and froze at what she saw.
A kirin foal. A kirin foal with glittering gold scales and snow-white wings. Something in her hissed kirin. Another voice cried child. Something in her ached, pushing her feet forward and making her reach for the canteen at her side. She knew the harshness of the desert, this child would die if not saved. The thought made something in her quake.
She would not let another die out here, not if she could stop it.
She stops short of the foal’s side, baring her hide to show now weapons and a soft light in her eyes. “Hello little one, may I help you?”

It was getting harder to breathe.
Though she had tried to curl herself under the rock as much as she could, the temperature did not relent nearly enough. And there was no water here to quench a thirst she had never felt before. That she likely wouldn’t have if she continued to roast in this unforgiving desert. Her sides heaved, and she was making a dent in the sand as she breathed from her sand encrusted, sunburnt nose.
She was going to die here. She was going to die shortly after she had become alive again. Throughout the week, she had come to the conclusion that she was, in fact, alive. That she had, in fact, died. Some kind of magic, likely the magic of her God, Ignacio, had caused her to be reborn. Though she wondered why he would put her somewhere without any water. What was the point, being reborn only to die shortly after? It made no sense to her. But then again, nothing made sense when you were slowly cooking alive.
She swore she heard hoofbeats. With her head on the sand, she could almost imagine the sound of someone coming. Wouldn’t it be great, to be found by someone she knew? Maybe it was her parents. No...there was nothing in this damnable desert. What she was hearing was another mirage somehow.
Until it wasn’t.
Hoofsteps had in fact been what she was hearing, real ones, not a figment of her imagination. And it was these hoofsteps that finally stopped near her. Weakly, lids slowly lifted to reveal golden eyes, and Sonali’s heart flew when she thought of who she could see. But it wasn’t a kirin. It wasn’t her parents. In fact, it was one of Argus’ horses. If the voice hadn’t spoken about helping her, she may have lashed out in fear. Though what could she have done in her weak state, except perhaps flap around feebly with her foreign wings?
The mare looked real. While a hazy, fluttering stream of heat fizzled about her, Sonali reassured herself that the mare was in fact real. Lifting her head, which took quite a bit of effort, the filly turned her head to look with both eyes at the roan mare before her. The side of her face she had on the ground was covered in sand.
“...water…” Was the only word she could get out, before her head flopped weakly upon the ground once more. She doubted the mare just carried water around with her, and she doubted the mare would even want to go near her, despite saying she could help, not when she was a creature of fire, a creature that caused death. She felt delirious.

She lept into action at the foal’s word. With soft movements, Diana comes forward and sits in front of the foal, releasing her burden and sliding the saddle bags off her hind as she goes. She grunts slightly as she drops to her knees. She wiggles her canteen out from the bags and undoes her cloak. She shimmies forward and cradles the filly’s chin, coaxing cracked lips open and pouring cool water down her throat. While the shoves water at the filly, she also brings her cloak forward, gently brushing sunburned hide free of sand. Gently, Diana works her way down the foal’s body, dusting away and slowly pulling the foal up from being collapsed on her side. She handles legs until they are curled against pale hide, folds wings and smooths down feathers, picks out burrs from hair and then finishes by gently pulling the cloak over the foal’s head. The burgundy cloak light and airy, providing shade from the heat. The hood comically dwarf’s the filly’s head and Diana couldn’t help but give a small smile at the sight. When she’s satisfied, she pulls away and pulls the canteen back, brushing the hair from the foal’s sweat plastered brow. She then puts the canteen aside and pulls out some plump cactus pears, a rarity that she hoards. (Soleria will always find the fruit, no matter where she hides them) She pushes them forward and gestures for the filly to eat. Diana then settles down, digging into the sand burying her hooves in the cool sand below. She then looks out into the expanse of the wilds, frowning at the heat visibly rolling off the stone. She had thought it not to bad, but now she could feel the strain of the sun and the weary cry of her bones. With a frown she gives the filly a look. “Don’t respond now, let your voice rest, but we’ll wait till later in the day. Now the sun is a deadly thing and isn’t going to spare anyone his rays at this hour.” With that she turns away, scanning the horizon for threats.

Sonali hadn’t...really expected the mare to actually jump into action so quickly. In fact, Sonali had still questioned if the mare was there, what with the ethereal heat wisps rippling around her body, causing her to look like she was underwater. But after her head had fallen to the sandy pillow, the roan mare hurried to her head. If the child had been any stronger, she might have jerked her head away in fright, but her energy was just about sapped away under the suns strong rays. Why had Ignacio forsaken her? Or was the mare brought to her by the Lord of Flame? But why a horse? At least she wasn’t a unicorn.
She couldn’t, wouldn’t, complain however. Especially since before she knew it, water was being ushered into her mouth, rehydrating her lips and her tongue, cooling her parched throat. She could instantly feel her body revitalizing, and like a newborn foal to a teat, she drank greedily. She praised Ignacio, praised the mare who cradled her chin and brushed the sand from her body. She barely even noticed herself being pulled and tucked against the mare and curled up rather than lying limply.
And finally, when the canteen is pulled away, Sonali gasps for air, which rushes down her chilled body into her lungs. She is aware of the cloak providing shade, aware of a somewhat familiar smell. Cactus pears were being pushed toward her, and the fruit is a welcome sight. They were familiar because Sonali had managed to find one while she was walking on the third day. She looked up to the mare, the cloak gently rippling about her face. She was going to say something, but she was pretty much ordered to rest her voice, rest in general. But she manages a nod, a stronger nod, before she looked down to grab a fruit with her golden teke. At first her teke didn’t want to respond, but eventually, the gilded shimmer pulled a pear close and she crunched into it. It provided sustenance, and extra fluids that she desperately needed.
She would thank the mare when she was a bit stronger.

Silence reigns as the sun continues his trek across the sky. Crimson eyes continue to scan the horizon and twinkling teke shifts and tuts over the filly tucked into pale hide. As soon as the sky begins to burst into orange hues, Diana begins to move. With a groan, she rises to her feet and stretches her legs. Joints pop and a tail sways lazily as she moves, making a circle as she returns feeling into her legs. As soon as her legs are warmed, Diana turns and plucks her saddle bags out from the sand. She tuts and shifts until its rests comfortably on her lower back. She then turns her gaze to filly still buried in the sand. “We are about two hours out from my home and with the way you are it would be ill advised for you to walk.” A sheepish smile spreads across her face, “And considering I’m one of the few that comes out this way, I’m going to be the only one who can carry you out of here. So, please work with me here.” With that, the roan pulls forward and slowly coaxes the filly onto her back, shifting limbs with her teke and pulling the cloak in such a way it tucked the foal’s wings to her sides- making a cloak and wing burrito. Diana only hissed slightly at the weight, unused to the burden on her back. When she deems her load settled, she gives the filly a smile, “All settled then? Let’s get home then.” She then rises to her feet and begins the trek back to Osulas. Time passses in silence for a while, the whisper of the wind and the clop of hooves the only sound in the twilight. Then, Diana throws her head back and gives the filly a kind look. “It’s been awhile since I’ve found you, so you might be able to give a few choice words. So, do you have a name little one? I can’t keep calling you ‘little one’ forever.”

She had drunk as much as she could, and she ate a couple of the fruits before resting against the roan mares side. Although she wasn’t feeling close to death anymore, she still felt exhausted. Her head even hurt from being in the sun for so long. But now she wasn’t alone. Now she had some semblance of comfort with the mare next to her side. She said nothing for a little while longer, still dazed from the fact she was certain she was going to die and was miraculously saved. She was really too tired to think about it, but equally too awake to sleep.
“Thank you…” She finally said, her voice soft and groggy, her head falling against the mares shoulder as her eyelids fluttered closed. Even if she wasn’t really going to sleep, at the very least she could rest her eyes from the bright sand that reflected the sun's rays.
And before she knew it, the mare was standing, and she was sitting up herself as she looked up to her rescuer. The sky was laced with amber hues, and Sonali wondered if she had indeed fallen asleep. She was about to try standing, but she halted her movements when the mare spoke her intentions. The thought of being carried was somewhat offensive, but at the same time, she could feel her legs pleading with her. Stifling a sigh, the child nodded.
She moved her legs and wings, the latter as best as she could considering they were still rather foreign to her, but Diana soon enough had the girl in place. The child filly frowned, feeling guilty that the mare had gone through all this trouble already and was now carrying her like some princess or something. But soon enough they were walking, and to give herself, and perhaps the mare, a little more support, she leaned her head down against the base of the mares neck.
Her breathing is steady, far better than it had been earlier in the day. As oranges shifted to pinks and purples, twilight was settling upon the desert. The arid heat of the day was coming way for much cooler weather, weather that Sonali was glad she had wings to curl up underneath for. She was finding herself drifting off to sleep again when she realized the mare was speaking to her again, which immediately woke her right back up.
“...S…Sonali.” She spoke shyly, her rounded ears folded back against her head sheepishly for a moment. But she added a question after a brief silence. “...What’s your name?” It seemed the right thing to ask. She couldn’t keep thinking the mare was simply that; the roan mare.

Diana only smiled at the filly’s stuttered name- though it did make her think. Sonali? Almost similar to… to. Oh sweet Alya that’s funny. With a soft snort Diana begins to trot a little faster, feeling the night chill begin to bark at her heels. She then flicks her ears at the filly’s question. She mind stalls for brief moment. I never told the poor thing my name! Diana turns her head back, “My name is Diana. And I guess you’d also like to know where we are going?” She gestures with her head to ridge. “Just over that ridge is the city of Alhaj. It was… uh recently rediscovered.” I am not mentioning how I was apart of that. With that Diana turns back around and continues forward. She stays silent as she walks, eyes scanning the horizon as they draw closer to the settlement. The moment the first firelight flickered Diana pulled to a halt. With a snort she turns to the filly and begins to adjust the cloak, hiding as much as the filly as possible. “While there shouldn’t be too many horses about this late, I need you to stay hunkered on my back, try to keep you antlers hidden and do not make a peep.” She then turns around and begins to walk calmly into the settlement, eyes drifting by broken buildings and distant torches. The farther Diana travels the more tense she becomes, ears flicking about wildly in search of danger. Soon enough, she sees her home and makes a mad dash for the door. Only sighing as she makes it inside. Only to freeze as the thought occurs to her- I have a babysitter. With a curse, Diana coaxes Sonali down, nudging her towards a pile of blankets and pillows. “Hide in there little one, I’ll only be a few minutes.” When she’s sure the filly is hidden, Diana turns and trots down the hall towards one of the main living space. The moment she enters the room both of her foals squeal and dash into her hold. Diana laughs and nuzzles them both. “Soleria, Tapioca! I hope you two behaved well?” She gives the babysitter a look. Said stallion laughs. “Oh, they were perfect little angels. Well behaved the whole time!” Diana nods in thanks and laughs as Soleria nudges her leg. With the two foals glued to her side, Diana walks the stallion to the door. “I can’t thank you enough for this my friend.”
He only laughs. “It’s the least I could do. You’ve saved me more than once Diana.” She gives him a glare. “If you come walking through that door with a bleeding leg again I’m going to gut you.” The stallion gives her sheepish grin and moves over to the- the pile where Sonali is hiding. “Let me just get my cloak and I’ll be on my way!” Diana only smiles, hiding the fear running rampant in her chest. The foal. He inches closer and closer, blue teke drifting inches close. Closer, closer.
He snuffs up his cloak without a second glance he bids her adieu and trots out the door. She pauses for a brief moment, eyes wide and sweat chilling her hide. She only shakes her head and walks to the pile of blankets. “You can come out Sonali, he’s gone.” When the pale muzzle appears, Soleria and Tapioca squeal and flee to the corner of the room, watching Sonali with wild eyes. Diana only laughs. “These two are my newborn twins- Soleria and Tapioca.”

Sonali curled her legs tightly against Diana’s sides, not particularly keen on the whole being carried thing and wanting that extra support. But she looked up to the horse, now dubbed Diana, and nodded in response to her question regarding where they were going. Alhaj. She had no idea where or what it was, only that it was their destination and, hopefully, her salvation. She didn’t really think twice when Diana mentioned the location being recently rediscovered, she was too tired to question such a thing. Maybe after she had a long rest.
The girl was starting to get comfortable by the time Diana had suddenly halted, causing the girls eyes to snap open wide. But she tried to hide her scared reaction as the mare turned to adjust the cloak covering her, noting faintly that the mare appeared to be trying to hide her. Her thoughts were confirmed when Diana mentioned that she needed to keep her antlers hidden and don’t make a sound. Icy cold fear gripped her heart, wondering where on Hireath this mare was taking her that would need her to be hidden.
Then it hit her; maybe she was being hidden because she was dangerous, and the other horses would try something. Maybe try to kill her.
Shivering somewhat, and not from the cold, she shook her head so her mane did a fair job spilling over her small antlers. She was even afraid to breath, afraid even the smallest intake of breath would alert everyone to her position immediately. Closing her eyes, as if that would somehow make her invisible, she clung to Diana as the mare made her way through the settlement.
As they moved, she could feel the muscles along Diana’s back tense more and more, as if the mare were waiting for someone to approach. Luckily however, no one did. Sonali opened her eyes as the mare entered a building, and then stop just inside the entrance. She is soon being pulled off Diana’s back, which was a bit scary for a moment, but she soon finds her legs, stronger than they had been for hours. She’s almost immediately pushed over to a pile of pillows and blankets, her ears folded against her head worriedly.
She is told to hide.
Hesitating a bit with concern, she looked back to the pillows and slowly crawls inside of them. She uses her gold teke to pull the pillows over herself like some fortress, a blanket draped over for good measure. She peers out of a small hole made from some conjoined pillows, giving Diana a worried look, but she said nothing. Diana left after she was pleased with the hiding place, leaving Sonali to her thoughts.
This was quite the strange day…
She couldn’t hear much of what was going on outside of the pillows and blankets, but she did feel hoofsteps start coming her way. She did not hear her name, and the steps sounded louder than Diana’s when she walked away. Panic engulfing her, she froze in her spot and held her breath. Soon enough, whoever it was had left and she heard her name.
The small girl pushed her nose out of the hole and took a deep breath. She heard a couple of squeals and stopped when her head had excited the pillow fort. Her ears folded back as she looked over to the foals that Diana had indicated. Then she relaxed. Slowly, the girl pulled herself out of the pillows and blankets and stood up. She was definitely stronger now, albeit a little tired.
“H-Hello.” She manages to say, her new wings somewhat limp as she still had no grasp over how to work them properly. “I-I’m Sonali.” She stuttered somewhat, nervous. She was likely similar in size to the other foals, considering her build was that of a smaller horse.

The affect was almost immediate.
Tapioca let out a pitifully hight pitched growl and Soleria squealed and dove behind Diana. Tapioca leveled Sonali with a withering glare and slowly stalked behind Diana as well. The two stared at the kirin through Diana's legs, twin sets of red eyes wide with fear and curiosity.
With a sigh, Diana gives the kirin a apologetic look and lowers her head and softly speaks to the foals. Her words drift softly through the quiet air. "No. She's not going to hurt you. Tapioca don't give me that look. Come on little ones, she won't hurt you."
With twin whinnies of protest , Diana pushes them out from behind her legs and towards the kirin. "They won't hurt you Sonali. They're just... shy." Both of the foals level the kirin with a stare, silence reigns for a few tense moments. Then, hesitantly, Soleria shuffles forward and inspects the kirin. Her muzzle wanders around the kirin's hide, brushing golden scales and poking soft wings.
Then something clicks and Soleria fully steps forward and begins nuzzling Sonali like any other sibling. Tapioca still on edge, but closer at his sister's response.
Diana only looks on in confusion. "I have no idea what just happened, but I'm assuming they like you."

Rounded ears immediately fold against Sonali's head, her long, fluffy tail pulling against her hind legs. Her heart resounded loudly in her chest, fear gripping her with an icy fist.
The growl reminded her of herself. How she snarled, pointed fangs bared at her enemies. Everyone was her enemies back then. If it were back then, the three of them before her would be her enemies now. But unlike then, she had no desire to end their lives. She didn't want to spill their blood. In fact, the thought of it just made her queasy. Yet she still stood there, still as a statue, her eyes wide and her pupils dilated.
Yet Diana trusted her.
She thought about running, turning tail and fleeing through the city, but too many things kept her from doing so. The mare had saved her from certain death, and she owed Diana much just on that regard. She also had no where else to go. Diana had made it obvious that her presence would likely cause an uproar, and possibly even her death. She suppressed a shudder, lowering her head some as she listened to the roan mare speak.
Diana was right about one thing, Sonali wouldn't hurt them. But the golden child was concerned that she might be roughed up instead. Just as well, she definitely would deserve it, after everything she had done. She came back to her senses when she realized Soleria, the filly, was getting up and close and personal. To keep the other filly from freaking out, Sonali locked her joints and forced her shivering muscles to cease; any false move could send them running.
But before she knew it, after she had her scales and wings inspected, she found the filly nuzzling her. Surprise lit her features, though she didn't miss Tapioca's hesitation. She couldn't really be bothered with it though, as her body was starting to feel the effects of her earlier exhaustion again.
"...We'll be good friends." Sonali offered softly, keeping her voice calm as to not scare the foals.

She laughed slightly as Soleria continued to nuzzle her "new found sibling". The newborn was making a great effort to drape herself all over the kirin's body. Still laughing, she nudges Tapioca forward, the colt reluctantly following her direction and coming to stand in front of the taller filly. While Soleria was busy curiously digging her nose into the kirin's wing, Tapioca hesitantly walked forward, muzzle briefly brushing Sonali's own before withdrawing. He sends a look back to Diana, seemingly saying 'Are you happy?' To which Diana only snorts and pulls the colt away and tucks him into her side, which he gladly snuggles into, leeching off her heat.
After a few seconds, Diana draws forward and pulls Soleria away, who had resolutely buried her face into the kirin's chest, much to the filly's vocal whine. With a huff, Diana ushers the two down the hall. Reappearing and gesturing for Sonali to follow.
She leads the filly down a hall and into a room, a warm bed in one corner with a desk, vanity and bookshelf in the other. It was small, but cozy. Diana leads the filly in and gestures about. "You can stay here. I hope it will suffice?"

Just let it happen. Let them get to know you.
Those were the words continuously running through Sonali's head.
In all reality, Sonali was just as scared of them as they were of her. Kirin society hadn't approved of other breeds, and that teaching was still very much ingrained. It was her wings that sobered her. Wings that Soleria was so very fond off, a part that wasn't even supposed to be there. She wondered if she had a right to be upset about it, even if there was no one she knew who she could talk to about her distress over the situation.
Maybe it was a dream.
Maybe she will wake up in the afterlife where she belonged, running next to Ignacio once more. She'd be golden, wingless, perfection in Ignacio's image. Perfect once more.
All the while she was lost in thought, Soleria had continued nuzzling her and pressing herself into Sonali's chest, where she felt the slightest brush against her muzzle. Snapping to attention, she noticed Tapioca very close, catching his look as he looked away to his mother. And very quickly after that, the mare had gathered both foals up and lead them out of the room.
Standing there, unsure what to do with herself, Sonali contemplated escape again. But the idea died just as fast as it reappeared when Diana reentered the room alone. Without a word, Sonali slowly followed the silver mare when she gestured for her to follow. Wondering where they were going, the young girl had no choice but to follow.
Down the hall they went, only slightly taking in the surroundings, when they branched off into another room. There was a bed in the corner, a desk, a shelf of books. It wasn't enormous or anything, certainly smaller than her bedroom back in Eithne, but it radiated a welcoming warmth that beckoned the scintillating child within.
"It's very nice, thank you, Diana." Sonali turned to look at the mare and offer her a smile, though exhaustion lay bare upon her features. She'd most definitely get a good nights rest tonight, after everything she had gone through. "I think..I might sleep now..." Sonali slowly wandered to the bed, almost collapsing onto the plush mattress when she reached it. But she kept herself steady, remembering what she was and how she should appear; strong. She lowered herself in the bed and couldn't contain the sigh of relief that escaped her lips.
"...Thank you."
