A S R A I• Vagabond | Hedgewitch • “I don’t care what it takes, I am going to do what I know is right. Late summer evenings were always peaceful. The birds nesting in the hedge sang their songs of splendor, acting as companions to the soft sigh of the breeze and the rustle of some creature in the forest, coming together to create nature’s symphony. Asrai sat in the bench swing on the front porch, taking in the sights and the sounds that surrounded him. Tucked against his body was the red storybook he’d been given almost five years ago, the edges frayed and worn from all the times it had been opened and skimmed through. The gold leaf was starting to peel too, but Asrai didn’t mind. He didn’t mind at all, for his mind was in a different place. It couldn’t have been more than a few weeks since he and his mother had ventured out and found themselves at that wicked, wicked tower of bone. The memory of that place still made him tremble from his hooves to the tips of his feathers, and try as he might to forget it, it was hard to forget something that loomed over your home like a decaying corpse. Some unseen force pulled his eyes up from the scenery of the garden to that pale thin line in the distance and he stared at it blankly for a few moments before he managed to tear himself away. It would be gone soon anyways, hidden in the dark where it belonged. With a careful touch, Asrai drew the storybook out from under his wings and laid it out on the bench beside him, bringing a small pack of tarot cards with it. He flipped with expert precision to the center of the book where a full color spread of the original gods lay waiting. He had tried once to recreate this beautiful drawing but had never been able to get the features quite right. He’d thrown the finished piece out in frustration, but Naka had fished it out of the garbage and it now sat in a frame in the living room. He smiled at the memory and began to shuffle the flimsy cards. He hadn’t touched this deck in a long time, but it felt good to use them again. As Asrai sorted the cards, he let his mind wander and wander it did. His thoughts flickered from the garden’s song to the birds to the chickens in the pen nearby to Merrick, the peddler, to the outside world to the Point to Digend and finally came to a screeching halt at his patron god. Looking down, Asrai found himself holding the Magician card with Argus’s third eye staring up at him from it’s face. The Magician was said to be one of the most powerful symbols in a deck and Asrai felt a little flash of pride that his patron was the one to grace it. “I wonder if you can see me right now...” the little pegasus mused to no one but himself and the card. “A god can do and see anything, right? Can you see me? Can you see the tower? Can you see everything from up there?” Pale magenta eyes flickered up towards the stars, which had just begun to appear like sparse freckles on the face of a black mare. “Can you see me?”

Argus God of the Arcane
"Remember my children, do not neglect either the eyes of the heart nor the mind. Cold logic must be tempered by the heat of emotion. Without one, the other will destroy you."

The aroma of incense floods your senses as a calming presence washes over you. The sound of a heartbeat drums within the very essence of your being as a strange yet familiar presence draws nearer.
In that moment, the world seems to fade away, leaving you standing in a place that feels somewhere between a dream and reality.
"Asrai."
The voice is more felt than heard, calm and welcoming as if drawing you in.
"I see you, my son."
As the voice speaks again, you watch as a figure slowly materializes out of the sheer arcane energy in all things. As if stepping out of the mysteries of the universe itself, you see Argus standing before you in all their glory.
"I have always seen you, child. I have watched over you from the day you were born, and I will continue to do so until such a time as you join the stars."
A small smile crosses their face, as the single eye in their chest regards you closely, as if staring into your soul.

A S R A I• Vagabond | Hedgewitch • “I don’t care what it takes, I am going to do what I know is right. At first, Asrai did not notice the presence of the god. He did not notice the sharpening of the world, the saturation of life and color and feeling that enveloped him. He did not notice the scent of incense or the slowly beating drums, he didn’t even notice that he was no longer lying on the swing. He felt dulled for a moment, just a moment, before the voice rippled out and drew back the curtain of reality. All at once Asrai noticed these changes, but the realization was not jarring. His usual anxiety of the new and unexplained was replaced by comfort. Somehow, the pegasus felt as if this was where he had always belonged. It was a beautiful sight, despite its emptiness. Asrai only needed to wait another moment for that emptiness to be filled. Under the stare of bright magenta eyes, Argus’s very being seemed to leak from the world around them, settling into an ethereal form amidst the realm of stars. Reassurances slowly spilled from their lips followed by a graceful smile which Asrai returned tenfold. The pegasus had not been raised religiously. He did not carry the same absolute reverence towards the gods as a Talorian might have. No, no, the pegasus greeted his patron like an old friend. Bounding over floating clouds and starstuff, Asrai drew closer, stopping just short of crashing headfirst into Argus. He took a moment to observe the roving eye planted dead center of Argus’s chest and smiled up at them, an adoring gleam in his eye. “I knew it,” he whispered under his breath, awestruck. “I knew you were watching.” He paused, concern taking over as he cocked his head to the side, in that moment looking much like a young puppy. “It’s really good to see you again...but you look a little different. Are you okay?” Perhaps it was silly for a mortal to worry over the fluidity of a god, but Asrai was a stranger to the ways of the starscape. Change was always a cause for concern for a child who had known nothing else.

A gentle laugh escapes the god's lips as they watch the child giddily make his way towards them.
"Of course, little one. I watch over all that I love."
They smile as Asrai studies them, noting the change in their appearance with concern. Shaking their head slightly, the reply.
"Change is not always cause for concern, child. It's the way of the world itself, and in many cases, it is a cause for celebration. Children grow, seasons shift, landscapes are altered as time goes on. "
Their voice is warm and fatherly as they speak, reassuring the young pegasus. Moving to the child's side, they motion ahead.
"Come, I will show you you."
They walk forward, glancing to their side to ensure the young equine followed, making their way towards a small pile of starstuff. Reaching out with their mind, they shaped it into what appeared to be a portal of sorts, turning into a window to the material plane as they gently touched it.
Within the window, a small caterpillar appears, quickly moving along a branch, before wrapping itself in a cocoon in a matter of moments. After a short time longer, the cocoon shudders before beginning to break apart from the inside to reveal a small butterfly struggling to emerge. Though it all seems to move too quickly, time works differently outside the mortal plane.
"There is great beauty in change child, a reflection of the arcane that flows through all things. It's everywhere, you only need to open your eyes and look for it."
The god smiles, turning to face the child as the window turns to stardust.

A S R A I• Vagabond | Hedgewitch • “I don’t care what it takes, I am going to do what I know is right. Asrai nodded, his curls bouncing with each dip of his chin. He was relieved to hear they weren’t hurt. Who knows what would happen if they had been hurt or if they had died. Was that even possible? Before he could ponder on it any longer, Argus began to move. Drifting like a ghost, Argus turned and the pegasus kept pace with them, listening to the sound of two sets hoofsteps as they clicked across the sparkling mirror. The formation of the portal was mesmerizing. It seemed to glitter and glow like something straight out of a dream, occasionally it looked too magical to be true and at others it seemed perfectly at home in the starscape. It’s face ebbed and flowed and Asrai unconsciously held his breath when the creature appeared on its surface. The metamorphosis was beautiful yet bittersweet. Asrai always envied the creatures that belong to Alya’s skies but adored them at the same time for their gift of flight. At least some creatures were able to enjoy the feeling of wind on their wings, even if he could not. His envy was forgotten, however, as the chrysalis fractured and the portal faded into starry wisps. In an instant, Asrai was filled to the brim with questions. How had they done that? Is that was magic was like? Was that a real caterpillar? Would he have been able to touch it if he’d put his teke through the pane? Would it have rippled like stone through a pond? If it was real, where was it? Sirith? Onea? Somewhere else? He had so many questions but so few words to ask them with. Regardless, they tumbled out, less eloquently than he’d hoped. “That- That was so cool! How did you...” he trailed off and looked up at the god again, catching sight of that little cloud of starstuff as it floated away into the vastness of the space around them. “Is that arcane magic too?” He asked, lifting his wings as if to fly after it. “Is that what this place is made out of? It’s almost like something out of a fairytale, like anything could happen at any moment.” Asrai paused, uncertainty setting in his chest. “I’m not...dreaming, am I?”

The god simply smiled down at the child.
"Does it truly matter if you are? Dreams are part of my domain, little one, and sleep would not make this encounter any less real. " The god laughed lightly. Pausing for a moment, She stepped forward, gathering up some of the arcane energy around them, slowly shaping into something that appeared to be a shield of some kind.
"Take this and keep it close." They said, offering up the item they'd crafted to the child. "May it be a reminder of this moment and the magic that surrounds you."
The god took a step back, slowly fading with the starscape as the world begins to come back into focus.
"Know you are never alone child. I will always be with you."
With those final words, Asrai is left sitting among his cards and storybook once more.
