╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch."
Location: Sterling Time: Early evening
It was odd finding a place in Sterling where they weren't still given odd looks. A place where they wouldn't get kicked out the moment Caius slacked in his attempts to make Varus productive. Though, it had been... Easier for Caius. The entire journey from Nariah to Sterling after being randomly teleported had left Varus without his drugs. Withdrawals of course had wracked his system, but it seemed to clear his head somewhat, and while he was still addicted, it was not as heavy as it used to be.
Caius didn't want to admit it was maybe because of the unicorn that Varus almost seemed to make friends with. But... Varus had clung to him when they arrived, maybe only because of the fact he was also from Sterling, but also maybe because he claimed to be from Aodh. Part of it annoyed Caius, who was mildly wary of the other species, considering they were half a continent away from where the kirins were gathering at the call of their king.
But he was also relieved. Varus wasn't quite self sufficient, but he was at least remembering to sleep, and occasionally trying to eat and drink without Caius forcing it down his throat. Varus seemed to take a liking to the tea that was so common in this new herd they were part of. At least it was something he was getting down easily. Caius let out a low, irritated hum idly. Had Varus just needed a friend to stop being an utter wreck of a kirin?
"You made a noise..." Varus softly said, looking up from trying to read the book in front of him to stare blankly into space, like he was trying to look inside his own mind and stare at Caius. The book was in a language he didn't understand, so different from what both he and Caius learned in their youth, and while he almost wanted to ask for help... Caius wasn't letting him. He said that it would damage their pride to ask for help from someone else.
"I did not make a noise," Caius grumbled back.
"...Why... Why are you irritated at me...?" Varus again softly asked, curling their tail tighter around their haunches, curling into a slight ball. He didn't think he'd done anything to make Caius upset. It was really only the drugs and supposedly babbling like an idiot and damaging their pride that made him upset... But he was just trying to read in front of the fire, warming their scales.
Caius held back another noise of irritation. This shared mind... Nothing was hidden... He didn't want to prod at the fact that Varus was doing even slightly better for fear that it might set Varus back again. "...You know you can't understand those words, but it's annoying to see you try and just get frustrated." He lied with a huff.
Varus blinked, slowly looking down to the book. Was that it...? He... He loved books before they... Were reformed. And he wanted to find an escape that didn't leave him practically comatose from sleepiness. "I'm not getting frustrated..." He mumbled back.

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
Whilst Caivarus was at the home Teu shared with them, the unicorn was off at some celebration. A birthday or graduation... he couldn't quite remember. He had been invited by one of his coworkers (if you could call them that) at the small tattoo shop just after he finished his work for the day, and promptly departed for the free booze and buzz.
It was rather disappointing, the Breimian parties. For that reason, Matuesz began to believe he was only invited because he was Aodhian, and as a result, a natural selection to spice up a party. Instead of adding his own flavor though, he drank in the back of the room, eyes low to the floor as he waiting for anything to happen.
Laughter, somewhere from a little group near the center of the room rang above the white noise. That was it.
So with a sigh of disdain, Teu grabbed one of the bottles of spirits and headed out the door with little more than a dip of the head in farewell.
- Teu wasn't shocked when he could barely get his teke to push open the door to the house, the already-weakened magic and intoxicated state ruining his focus and only causing him to step into the door rather than through it.
With a drunken growl, he used his bare teeth to pull it open. A quick twist of his head, and the obstacle was surpassed. He squinted his eyes proudly toward the hinges, tail twitching against the ground as he watched it slowly close shut.
Then, without skipping a beat he stumbled his way through the entry alcove to see the dark kirin laying by the fire. A coy grin fell on his lips, though sly as he tried it to be he looked more like a toddler's thrilled smile after receiving a gift.
"What're you up do, darlin'?" he hummed, stepping cautiously forward for fear of catching his hoof on the rug and making even more of a fool of himself.

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." "Then why did you make our tail smack the ground a few times while reading?" Caius asked, mostly just trying to add to his lie. Ugh, he almost wished Varus was high right now, it made him easier to talk to and reason at least because of his slowed mind...
"That wasn't frustration, that was-" Varus started, abruptly stopping mid sentence when a thud hit the front door. Tattered ears pricking forward, head snapping to face it like a started deer, Varus sat quivering lightly. Was that Mateusz? He didn't know.
"Varus..." Caius started, reaching, probing for control, which the other kirin soundlessly handed over, retreating in anxiety over what the noise was. Starting to move to get up, he heard the door open. His lip curling ever so slightly to show their teeth, the hoplite blanked when the red unicorn literally stumbled through the entryway.
"Mateusz," Caius groaned, sinking back down from his half up position. Darlin'? Twitching an ear, Caius raised a brow. "You're beyond intoxicated." Caius shook his head lightly, ears twitched back in annoyance while he crossed his front legs. Watching the cautious steps on the rug his own hoof twitched in temptation to try and shift the rug underneath the unicorn to see if it would make him trip.
"Caius!" Varus snapped in their head. "I-I don't know what exactly you're thinking, but I felt that. It-It would be rude when he's in this state."
"It was a tempting thought." Caius muttered back. "Varus was reading." He finally replied back as an answer to the question. "And you probably need to go lay down before you hit your head on something. Unless you already did." He flinched, the control slipping. Ugh. Varus wanted it back since it wasn't actually something dangerous. Maybe.
He still felt like it wasn't right to trust the unicorn just because he was also from Sterling... But he put a roof over their head, he couldn't complain out loud. Body language shifting, Caius drew back somewhat reluctantly, the proud, arched neck and almost expectant posture shifting back. Varus curled back up, tucking their knees under them. "S-Sorry... I thought you weren't... You, and I had Caius take over..." Varus greeted Teu now. The little nickname had mostly flown past him, as he'd simply been trying to calm down from the slight scare.

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
He seemed to have enough coordination to muster a raised brow, watching the ordeal unfold before him. Instead of trying to unfurl the complicated kirin, Teu instead made his way by the fire, plopping down beside Caivarus with ears perked and eyes quiet.
"Caius seems nice, prob'ly doesn't like me because I don't've scales." He chuckled, eyes staring softly into the warm flames. His smile didn't seem to leave even when the kirin in mention surfaced and made quick work on assuming Teu's state.
"Hey uh... Cai, my main man, can you hear me in there?" Teu raised his head, leaning forward so his nose almost touched the other's cheek, eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "Y'don't have to worry 'bout me. I haaate the Aodhians. I-I hope the kirins kick 'em to the curb." He laughed again, nearly falling forward.
Another low giggle, and he had managed to flop down to the floor, rolling onto his back and stretching with a sigh. "You 're like... old n' shit--" He frowned, spotting the book that Caivarus had been reading before he interrupted his peaceful evening. "--oh that's a book." His frowned deepened as his teke lifted it over his face, only for it to drop and land on his muzzle. "It's in shitty Breimian. Can't read it. Can you read it, babe?" He looked over toward Varus with wide, expectant eyes, seeming legitimately concerned over who could and couldn't read the Breim-written literature.

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." Varus twitched when the other equine plopped down beside them, glancing over at him. Tilting his head, he stared at him while he spoke. Oh, Ignacio...
"Of course I can fucking hear him... He's drunk as hell, Varus." Caius snapped, reasonably annoyed that Teu was first able to tell why he wasn't exactly warm and fuzzy, but also just dealing with drunkards was... Annoying. But he was saying he hoped the Kirins got rid of the Aodhians... Maybe that was just the alcohol talking.
Varus felt like he should be reasonably anxious about the short distance between them, but Teu didn't seem like he'd do that much right now... He might fall over if he tried. Cocking his head to watch him rolling on the ground, the comment on their age actually drew a small snort from Varus.
Was that a chuckle? That was new. Caius again chose not to comment on it, not wanting to make Varus feel self conscious about it. But it was curious to him. Confusing, but he much rather preferred this all to Varus getting them into a practical coma with his drugs.
"Oh, I was just-" Varus started, ears pinning slightly. He almost reached out to stop him from floating it over, yet simply sat silently, tail twitching anxiously. The book simply falling and landing on Teu's face again drew out a small, choked snort. Rubbing his face with his knee, he glanced back over. Was he... He was drunk, but that seemed like...
"Don't you dare tell him you can't read it." Caius quickly cautioned.
Varus hesitated, glancing upwards for a moment before looking back to Teu. "No... I can't read it..." He slowly said- Babe? What was- What?
"Varus, what the hell-"
Varus gave a small hissed 'tch' to cut Caius off. "You...You don't have to learn if you don't want to." He mumbled back, focusing his attention on Teu again. "It's... Not in what I was educated in... In my previous..." He trailed off.
Well, someone was growing some balls. A few muttered words followed, but Caius stayed quiet, half to watch what would happen, half because he was somewhat shocked that Varus was talking like that. He wanted Varus to be able to stand on his own feet so he didn't need to take care of their body so much, but damnit if he wasn't sacrificing their pride right now...

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
His smile grew large and giddy seeing the semi-positive response from Varus. At least he was talking to him, even though Teu probably looked like a blabbering toddler.
"Y'know, Aodh changed. I'nt like it so I left." He lifted the book from his face with quivering teke, biting his lip with concentration. "My job w's to screw people and get screwed. But I also help th' slaves there too."
The unicorn rolled back onto his belly, now looking directly up at Caivarus. He still had that innocent, wide-eyed look even with a pair of golden fangs poking out of his mouth.
"We should go on a date soon, you're very pretty 'nd you can teach me how to read in your old language," he mumbled.
His voice was surprisingly cleaner than minutes before. But his steadied stature only lasted a few moments before he fell back to his side, a giggling mess once more.
It took him a couple more to settle back down, propping himself upright so he got into the best position to be both next to the kirin and feel the most amount of warmth from the fire. He hummed quietly to himself, watching the orange flames flicker and twitch.
Of course, it didn't last.
"Y'okay? How's ol' Cai doin' in there?" He craned his neck to stare up at the bi-colored eyes of Caius and Varus.
He was truly fascinated in them, the way their souls had managed to find each other to merge into one body--though Teu would be lying if he said he didn't want to see them both in their own forms.
Mateusz seemed to have forgotten his inquiries within seconds, now trying to picture what they must have looked like in their past lives. The alcohol, he decided, was no help.

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." Varus tilted his head as he listened quietly, ears flicking in half interest. Also in slight concentration as he tried to listen and understand him through the slurring and mumbling. Slaves? He helped slaves? Varus knew about the self proclaimed Aodhians who lived in their former home, the fact they owned slaves too. But... That wasn't any different from what they'd been trying to do years ago... Establish dominion, ownership over others...
He blinked, staring down at Mateusz. He somewhat found his expression amusing, until he spoke. Date? He wanted to go on a date? What did he mean by that-
"He means a literal date, Varus. Kissing, maybe sleeping together at the end, a D. A. T. E." Caius half snorted. He himself in no way had been even half the genuine whore his cousin had been, as he had preferred genuine dates and had a couple flings here and there. But what about Varus? That, he didn't actually know. "You ever been on one, Varus?"
The clarification from Caius made his cheeks warm, the white markings on his face visibly showing a pink blush rising. Oh. Oh. "N-No, I've never... B-Been on one befo- A-And even if I have, I wouldn't do that at the end!" He babbled to Caius in a rushed hiss before trying to refocus on Mateusz. He was fine trying to teach him their old way of writing and reading. He was one of the most educated in it at the time, he supposed... He'd need to do it when he was able to think properly... Which meant dropping his drugs for a while. And he wasn't sure about that...
He'd never been on one? And he wouldn't- Ohhhh. Ace. That explained a lot. He half wanted to protest about the idea of a date, but he personally wasn't opposed to going on one and getting to sleep with someone. It had been a while. Centuries actually. He gave a soft huff of amusement thinking of that. Longest dry spell he'd ever heard of. Though, he may need to convince Varus, cause if he really was ace then that might make things tricky...
The giggling made Varus flinch, coming out of his thoughts to refocus and once more look at the unicorn. Oh dear. He heard Caius snickering in his head.
"O-Oh, he's-he's doing fine, and sounds amused." Varus replied, shaking his head to clear it as best he could after the momentary flash of embarrassment. He noticed the focus on Mateusz, and shifted slightly. "What are you... What are you thinking about?" Varus asked cautiously.

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
Teu watched the expressions shift on Caivarus' face as they spoke, half of the conversation inaudible to his ears. Once the focus switched back to the unicorn, he could only blink dumbly back.
"I was thinking about... uh... Y-you? In a... not... weird way?" he managed, coughing slightly to hide any weird giddiness in his voice. Then, as his sluggish state of mind caught up to him, his eyes focused back onto Varus. "Do what at the end?" He tilted his dark head, golden eyelids lifting to reveal the wide white rings around his enlarged pupils. It gave him a much gentler look to his features, rather than the narrow-eyed, shrunken-ringed look.
As he questioned Varus, he had subconsciously shifted into a much more comfortable state, leaning toward the other but still keeping a millimeter's distance away from contact. Clearly it had been some time since he had any ever since he came to Breim, and his caution was even greater around Caivarus.

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." Varus faltered after speaking, wondering quietly if he had said the wrong thing. Maybe it had offended the unicorn in some way. There was... Much he needed to learn about this new culture and time... Blinking, multicolored eyes focusing on Mateusz in the form of the slitted pupils expanding and contracting for a brief moment, he opened his mouth slightly, only to shut it again, lips flattening into a thin line. Thinking...? About him? Not in a weird way? What... Kind of way?
"Maybe in a dirty way." Caius quietly chirped.
Again, face flushing, Varus' gaze fluttered around the room anxiously. "C-Caius, no-" Finally his gaze landed on Mateusz again, and he swallowed, trying to clear his throat properly. Oh. He heard- Coughing, Varus looked back down to the book. "N-Nothing." He replied back, unable to think of a proper response. "Caius was- He was assuming-" Feeling the control of his throat and head being wrenched away drew a small scream out of him; Only to be heard in their head.
"Caius!"
"I told Varus what a date was, and how it typically ends. In the bedroom." Caius looked to Mateusz, a grin on his face. "That's why he's acting all flustered, cause he's never been on one-" Their scaled tail cracking a sharp blow over their withers made Caius jump, biting their lip. Ah hell. He only had their head right now.
"Caius! W-What are you doing?!"
"I'm with him on this one, Varus," He tilted his head towards Mateusz. "Maybe it'll help you loosen up and have some fun." Caius chuckled, pricking his ears. Another hit over their withers made his lip curl into a growl. "And this is exactly what I mea-"
"Caius- That was-" Varus shook their head, regaining control through force for once. "He's- I'm sorry, he's being- I don't know-" He babbled, rubbing his face on his knees. That was humiliating. What was Caius thinking? What was he doing? What was he hoping to achieve from that aside from causing humiliation for him? "I'm not- I'm not interested in- Bedroom... Things. Caius is... He's being..." He gave a soft groan, keeping his head in his knees.
"I'm being a helper. You need to relax."

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
Teu could only stare in silent awe as both Caius and Varus talked amongst themselves and him. It felt strangely inclusive, even in his own drunken manner. His dark face matched the brilliant red of his coat, glassy eyes round and mouth agape.
He was both thrilled at Caius' response, mischievous as his own, and concerned for Varus' reaction. His expression didn't reveal a thing about his internal thoughts or motive, but his eyes were all sparkly and bright as an amused, lopsided grin claimed his lips.
The unicorn found his buzzing body shuffling closer to the other, tasseled tail curling neatly to his side as he wrapped his head gently around Caivarus' neck. He hummed softly, the external warmth causing himself to slump further into the surprisingly-comfortable kirin.
"I was thinking about who you would be," he sighed, tilting his nose to bury his face in the soft black and white tuft of mane. He used his intoxication as an excuse for his touchiness. "And what you would look like as your own selves."
He let himself sit and soak in that warmth, eyes drifting shut in blissful silence. He was reluctant to let go, with physical contact being so rare nowadays.
"And Caius--" he started, raising his head ever so slightly so that he could be heard clearer. It was safe to assume the alcohol was beginning to wear off. "--I'm not what you think I am."

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." Staying curled up, Varus flinched on the first bit of contact, not expecting the touch. He held his breath, slightly peering up to see the other draping himself over them. Was he- What was- He released his breath, shivering lightly once Teu began speaking. He was wondering what they- He tightened his jaw, tail curling anxiously.
It was a thought he didn't like to remember. Because it was all too frequent that anytime he caught a glimpse of those green scales, he remembered this body wasn't his. Varus didn't push Teu away, a small part of him saying how much he'd been starved of such a thing. Trying to numb himself to the fact his body was a thing, that it existed and this was what it looked like. So he'd tried to forget about contact, forget his body- Their body.
He didn't have a reply for Teu, at least, not one that wouldn't bring about tears and a desire to rip his own flesh. Remaining where he was, only slightly looking up at the other. Tattered ears twitching, his brows furrowed slightly. Not what...
"Don't know what he's talking about. What does he mean by that?"
"Caius... He's asking what you mean," Varus finally spoke, his voice quieter, softer. He didn't know either. His stomach was still churning at the thought of what he used to look like. Because it was growing fuzzy. He remembered bits and pieces, but when he thought about himself as a whole, all he could see was his new form. He remembered he used to have a long mane, pulled back into draped buns. But he saw white streaks in it. That didn't use to be there.
He hated it. He was losing himself. Losing what he used to be. Shivering, his face still mostly hidden in his knees, he lightly brushed his teeth over his skin. He wasn't this. He wanted to tear off his own skin, because maybe if he ripped whatever this was off, he'd be himself underneath. Again brushing his teeth on his skin, he dug deeper this time, a light scratch appearing, a drop of blood welling up.
"Varus, don't. If you need your pipe, get it, but don't do that." Caius tried to interrupt him. Shit. Teu needed to change the subject, something to get Varus off his current train of thought.
Varus flinched, freezing, mouth still resting on his leg. He hesitated to reply to Caius, because Teu would hear it if he did.

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
The red stallion opened his eyes as he felt the other shift. He moved away, though it was a gentle shift of his shoulders to leave them undisturbed. Teu frowned, seeing his head tucked against his legs, frozen in place.
"I know you don't like me," he said quietly, withdrawing from his loose hug to nudge the kirin's cheek with his nose. Teu had seen the scars along their body, self-inflicted marks that indicated an internal war-zone. He knew of how they thought of themselves, their merged bodies trapped within one. "I'm not a kirin. That doesn't mean I'm inconsiderate, love."
He let quiet settle between them, brow furrowed thoughtfully. He wanted them to see the mere beauty of their merged and morphed coat, something that Teu had appreciated himself.
As the fire continued to crackle, the unicorn's eyes remained on Caivarus', staring intensely at the bi-colored irises. "You didn't deserve to be forced together," Teu murmured, though it was more to himself. His gaze returned to the fire, and he sighed softly as the embers hissed. "But you're here, 'n you're beautiful."
He lay his head down onto the ground, red teke lightly grasping the injured leg. He examined the small wound, and shifted his weight to grab some nearby gauze (he always kept it around for these specific occasions), and held it to the blood that beaded from the bite.
"I don't wanna drink anymore. It doesn't help. But this--" Teu looked back up to Varus, his expression surprisingly soft. "--this does. Maybe it'll help you too."

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." Twitching, Varus hesitantly looked up, releasing their leg, meeting Teu's gaze with a hint of shame. He tasted the faint iron on their sharp teeth. Didn't like him? ...He wasn't a kirin, Varus could say that much. But he was the only other he felt he could trust. He wouldn't turn them into the authorities, he wouldn't kick them out- Maybe. He hoped he wouldn't. They- He wouldn't know where to go if Teu did.
Caius faltered now, turning over the unicorn's words in his mind. Their mind. He felt less trust for the other species here than Varus. It was hard for him to find pleasure in feathers or gemstone horns. The fact he knew, he remembered, that he had slaughtered many of the species he saw around him now contributed to this. He felt a hint of remorse, a hint of frustration, but he told himself that Ignacio himself had told them to go and do what they did. Ignacio couldn't be wrong.
But Teu wasn't... Terrible... "I can tolerate him." He muttered quietly. He was at least trying to keep Varus from tearing their body apart, and for that he was grateful. He could only do so much to stop him with his limited power over their form...
Varus didn't know if he should look away or not. He almost did, until he heard the murmur and he almost thought he imagined it. What was he saying? Why would he say it? Any other species should feel justified in laughing at them, at what they've become. After- After what they've done. Still staring at Teu even after the other's gaze moved to the fire, he sucked in a sharp breath. Now he really couldn't believe his ears. Beautiful?
No- Now he- He- Lips parting, mouth slightly agape, he didn't fight the teke on their leg, only watching numbly while it was tended to. Finally he managed to speak one word, "Why?" He uttered in a hushed voice, his throat straining.
"Why would you think that?" His voice cracked. "I'm not- We're not- H-How could you think that about-about this?" He gestured towards their scales, blue and green merging. "I'm not- We- We can't be-" He couldn't get the word out, tears welling up as he hung his head, ears pinned flat and eyes squeezed shut.

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
The unicorn's tail swayed against his hip, brushing against the blue hues of glistening scales thoughtfully. Just as quickly as the contact was made, it was gone, retreating back to his red coat.
"Why?" he echoed the word, confusion on his face as if the answer to the question was as clear as day. He raised his head, leaving the gauze in place for a few seconds before red teke tossed it into the flames. He watched it burn. "Because that's just how I see you. Doesn't matter what you think, 'cause I will always find you pretty."
Teu's expression took a serious tone, solemn. The last remnants of soothing buzz were beginning to wear off, leaving him in a state that wasn't quite there, but still had a grasp on consciousness that he could be a bit more guarded with what he said next.
"I know you didn't ask for this. I never asked to be a-a plaything, o-or a unicorn or a father or an Aodhian--" He shook his head, discovering his rather emotional vent bubbling up in his chest. "But I made the most of it. I'm still from Aodh, and I'm still a unicorn. You're still Varus, n' Mr. Smartass is still Caius." Teu hiccuped, staring blankly at the kirin beside him. He was waiting for a retort, a rebuttal or a disagreement. To him, it was simple. At least, to his drunken self it was.
His ears lay back, tilted his head downward as if he were begging. "Don't be sad," he mumbled.

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." How. Varus wanted to beg, to plead, to know just how someone could find him, find them, to be pretty. To not look wrong and hideous. Everything about the two of them was wrong, clashing, fiercely different. They were not meant to be the way they were, and it was disgusting to him.
Sucking in a shuddering breath, tears starting to run down his face, Varus just shook his head silently. He couldn't accept it. He couldn't believe it. Because it just wasn't true. Every day, every minute, every time Caius spoke, he was reminded of what they both should be, what they shouldn't be. And there was no way that the two of them could be what they once were.
Listening numbly to Teu, he simply drew in shuddered, shivering breaths, verging on sobbing, yet not quite. How. He wasn't him, he wasn't the herald he once was. Caius wasn't the hoplite he once was.
"Mr. Smartass. I'd give him shit for that weak nickname but he is drunk off his ass, so I guess I can't blame him."
A weak laugh escaped Varus' throat. The smile and laugh faded as quickly as it had arrived. "Y-You're saying we're still us... But-But we're not... W-We're not- Who we should be-" He gasped out, trying to hold back the sobs. "I-I can't read- I can't- Ignacio won't talk to me- I-I look like- Like this..." He choked out. "Caius- He- He can't fight... H-He can't do what h-he was good at- B-Because I-I can't- Let him..."
"...Varus..."
"How are- How are we still u-us, when... When..." He broke off, pressing his forehead against the ground, biting his lip and sucking in breath. How were they still them when they'd lost everything that had once made up their identities. The only thing they could each cling to was their names. And that wasn't enough to make up an identity.
They didn't have family, they didn't have their home, they didn't have their god, they didn't have their hobbies, their skills were useless- What did they each have left?

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
His gaze had been on the orange light in front of them, glassy and clearly someplace else. But the moment he heard the cries, he returned his full attention to the kirin.
Teu allowed him to talk, to cry. Perhaps saying it aloud could get the other to accept themselves. Slowly, he slumped into their side, head curling comfortably against their shoulder while he closed his eyes. He was humming, a song he didn't expect Caivarus to know, but it had soothing notes to it.
Eventually, Varus' voice dwindled down, and Teu spoke up.
"Maybe it's a good thing, love," he whispered, sighing lightly as the warmth from their body combined with the fire, blanketing him in a bit of comfort. He only hoped it did the same for them.
He opened his eyes, looking at the fireplace and then to the statues that sat over it. Little figurines, with Argus at the center. Ignacio sat to their left, and on the right was Kaia. He looked down at the kirin.
"Maybe who you thought you were... would have been worse off." He went back to his contented meditating, but he continued talking. "Caius would be off, ripping other species' heads off because he never got to see the end of the gods war... when they all united... it was really pretty..." He paused. "I think Varus would be scared, and he wouldn't have any help from anyone... he would have never learned about how pretty things were when everyone joined together..."
He knew both of them were listening. He had known them long enough to understand a bit of how their dynamic worked. Teu let silence fall for a moment, seeing if anything he babbled about was seeping in.
Still leaning against them, the unicorn raised his head enough that his teke could brush through the clipped black and white mane, ears back and relaxed. He was truly fascinated by them, and especially so when he was under the influence.
But the fascination didn't stem from their abnormalities. He was fascinated by the way they both worked alongside each other, allowing Teu to wiggle his way in to what was clearly a personal space for them, how imperfectly perfect they were.
"It's okay to start over," he mumbled, voice growing drowsy now as sleep threatened to take over. "That's what I did... can't read... can't work since there's no horny rich guys or slaves here." Teu had closed his eyes, finding a position that was most comfortable. "But you've made it easier for me. I hope I make it easier for you."

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." The weight on their side usually would have earned a flinch, yet this time, Varus didn't react, at least not in the way he usually did. This time he leaned into the other, sniffling, rubbing his face on his knees roughly to try and stop himself from biting at them and to rub away the tears.
Good thing? How could it be a good thing? He was cut off from Ignacio, stranded in a body that wasn't his, Caius was helpless for the majority of their waking hours... Stifling a cough, Varus' ears twitched ever so slightly, one tattered and ruined, the other simply covered in light scars. How did he know that's what the outcome would be? If he-If he was still who he was supposed to be, maybe Ignacio would talk to him then and- And he wouldn't be so alone...
Caius could do little other than listen and feel, the stinging tears in their eyes, the shuddered, choking breaths constricting their chest. He wasn't sure if Teu was right. Maybe he would still be doing that, he had been once. He had been taught to be a soldier from a young age, to follow orders and complete objectives, regardless of what it was. Still, he kept his thoughts to himself, in hopes that something that Teu was saying soothed the other kirin, even if it was just for the moment. He wished he could say he could bring it up with Teu later in private, but that wasn't possible.
Drawing in rushed, uneven breaths in an attempt to try and collect himself, Varus didn't know what to say in response. Parting his lips, voice failing him once before he was able to speak, "I-I'm scared now..." He croaked out, voice cracking. He wanted something familiar, something he was used to, he wanted to hear Ignacio's voice, to be able to embrace his brother, his parents, to lose himself in scripture and novels. And he couldn't do any of that anymore.
He leaned more into Teu, pressing his cheek against him, finally leaving his own legs alone. "I-I don't want to start over..." He whispered. "I-I just..." Words failed him, leaving him with tears running down his face, chest tight and eyes squeezed shut.

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
Feeling the other lean against him, Teu's eyes lifted. He sucked in a deep breath, releasing it in a long, drawn out manner.
"...Just want to go back." He squeezed his eyes shut again, as if trying to send Varus a sense of calmness using nothing but sheer will. "Yeah."
The unicorn tilted his head, allowing them to rest against his less-than sturdy frame, tail moving to curl protectively around them.
"I never... really took to trying to understand what it was like before... before the war. Aodhians never really talked about it, understandably so." He huffed, remembering his time in school where they spent their time ogling the extinct kirin's and revering their work. Now he was here with one, one from the time Before. Then he continued. "But what I do know is what is here..." He nudged Caivarus lightly with his muzzle, pointedly. "You never know who is listening... but I think that makes it less lonely. Knowing they all love you, no matter your history, or who you are. Or what you are."
He pressed his temple against their neck, and when he gave their cheek a nudge, it was restrained, as if he was holding another action back. Sobriety coming back to ground him and his rambling thoughts.
"We can figure this out. But we can't do it if you choose to long for the past, instead of looking to the future." He took another breath, tired. "Ignacio knows you, and his flame burns bright, Varus. But he has changed, just as you have. How you choose to see that fire is up to you, and what you're willing to do to find it." Teu paused, a small smile on his face. "But there's also the water, the arcane, the sky, the earth that is here for you as well." He decided against sharing the last goddess, feeling that her mere existence could overwhelm Varus, and even Caius, if he was even caring to listen.

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." Nodding quietly in confirmation, Varus sucked in a shuddering breath, not trusting his voice anymore. Tears running down his face, into the corners of his mouth, he felt his already rough and worn throat getting more strained. He laughed weakly. What it was like before. None of the equines now would ever understand, even through writing and scripture...
Hiccuping, he opened his eyes, looking up ever so slightly when he was nudged, watching Teu while he spoke. Him...? Them...? Sniffling, his brows furrowed. All of them? ...They couldn't... They- Did Teu know? Did he know what they'd done? Their dreams... His and Caius'... Varus saw what Caius saw, what Caius had done...
How could any of the other gods love them? And if Ignacio didn't love them anymore then... Shivering, Varus bit their lip, his sharp teeth threatening to pierce their flesh. He had to hold himself back from letting the fangs draw blood, as much as he wanted to...
We? He looked up more, gaze flickering for a moment before meeting Teu's gaze. Throat weak, he gave a soft noise, verging on speech, but not letting himself talk. He faltered, gaze dropping for a moment. Was... Was he just... Sitting... Waiting for Ignacio to talk to him...? He wasn't... Reaching out and trying to find the fire like Teu said... But he'd been praying, over and over, hoping that one of his calls would be heard... Wasn't that trying to find it?
...Should he try to reach out to one of the other gods? Even... After what Caius had done? What... He'd done... Even indirectly... He was surrounded by the arcane. They were. They'd felt the arcane god's power, which was- It was more than what Ignacio had done for him lately... Maybe it was why they'd been trying to seek out Ignacio so much. Because the presence of the Arcane god was overwhelming, something they couldn't avoid, and Ignacio was practically non-existent...
And because he was clinging t-to the... To the past.
Closing his eyes again, he pressed his head against Teu once more. "...W...What is... Argus like..." He weakly asked.
"Argus? Why are you..."
"We don't k-know anything other than w-what we heard back then Caius... From rumors, f-from our own kind's perceptions..." Varus swallowed thickly. "I...Ignacio's changed... W-We don't know... How the others have as well."

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
He looked up. He had remembered asking the very same question to the Driven who had found him, helped him down to Sterling despite his suspicious appearance. Even though Ignacio was tattooed on his foreleg, he still felt an intense connection to Argus, especially in his time spent amongst the Kawaru.
Teu let his eyes wander the room, as if trying to find something. He chose to settle for the busts sitting atop the fireplace.
"I don't know nearly as much as the others but... from what I've heard, Argus is a lot like Ignacio. They love their children just as passionately as Ignacio. But instead of fire, they value knowledge. And emotion. Balance. They're sort of a... a two in one." He glanced around some more, thinking of what else to say about the Arcane god. "From what I've heard, interactions with Argus are very discreet, subtle. They have a fury to them that is more intense than the other gods', but I think that's what makes them appreciate the Breimians so much."
He shifted a bit so his teke could grasp a nearby pen and paper, one he had left out for Varus to doodle in if he so wished. Teu opened to a blank page, and began to draw.
It depicted a comic of sorts, but it had no leads or no ends. The first drawing was a picture of a crying, smoky horse. The second was a screaming horse, smoke curling up into intense bursts. The last was a quiet one, smoke calmly settled around them, many eyes staring blankly ahead.
"This was how Ocean explained it to me--" he started, using his pen to point to the first drawing. "He said that Argus is the most caring god, but also the scariest. They will cry for their people. If their people are sad, they are sad." He points to the second. "And if anyone hurts their people, they have a fury more powerful than any other's. Hence why you want to get on their good side." He chuckled at this. "The last one is the one the Kawaru have sought to know more about, I think. Argus' knowledge and wisdom, how they treasure allowing their people to expand their powers beyond what any others could do, instead of just... giving it to you like the others."
He connected each figure with a line, and a circle to envelope the whole piece.
"Ignacio is like a big warm dad. He's not like the Trio, where they're a bit more stickler-y to their people." He laughed again, much more airy than the last burst. "He just wants to take care of everyone, but he can't 'cause the kirins he fought with are now trying to kill his other followers. It's a little messy."
Teu seemed somewhat pleased with his explanation, but he was no priest. Hell, he didn't even know much about his own patron, considering how cryptic she was. But he thought of a good way that he could try to show Caivarus, if they were willing.
"We should go visit the temples tomorrow. I think you'd like it, and maybe we can get through Caius' thick skull about how nice it is to not have genocidal thoughts and feelings." His teke gently ruffled the other's mane, though planted a small peck to his cheek adoringly.

╬ ⧖ C A I V A R U S ⧖ ╬ "I didn't care if he was a genius or a fucking idiot, he was rotting away, and it wasn't fun to watch." Following Teu's gaze, also landing on the statues on the fireplace, Varus' gaze lingered on the bust of Ignacio for some time before moving to Argus. Knowledge... Emotion... Balance... "Two in one..." He mumbled under his breath.
"...Sounds familiar." Caius rumbled in agreement, also listening. Varus had a small point about not knowing about the gods now... So he was listening as well, not like he could plug his ears, but he could daydream or decide not to focus too much on the words.
Looking to the pen and paper, Varus leaned over slightly to look at the drawing better, rubbing his face to try and get most of the tears off so they wouldn't drip down onto it. The three images, although not detailed or deeply rendered, like he remembered his father doing, were still enough to send a shiver down his spine.
They'd been having nightmares since they felt that arcane surge, predating their rather non-consensual arrival in the Umare city with Teu. They had seen flashes of the many eyed god, and it made both of them uncomfortable. Varus, in a way that left him trembling and dry heaving in the middle of the night, and Caius uncomfortably silent, tense and expecting an enemy to fight.
Attention getting caught by the pen moving, Varus focused on the first drawing. Most caring? ...He didn't know about that, but scariest... Yes... Frowning slightly, sniffling a bit, his ears flicked uncertainly. He didn't... Remember Ignacio ever crying tears for them or anything like that... Still, everything made sense so far, and parts of it lined up with what they'd heard in the past. But hearing that Argus cared enough for their herd to cry tears for them was... Odd...
Varus just nodded slowly. It was messy... He looked up slightly, again rubbing his face. Visit the... "I...I'd like that-" He started, blanking from the kiss and hair ruffle. Face warming, he tucked his head down, stomach fluttering. But he didn't move away, or make any other sign of displeasure.
"I'm not having genocidal thoughts and feelings... Varus. Varus. Are you getting flustered. From a kiss."
"I'm not getting f-flustered," Varus squeaked from within his knees, hiding his face. "I-I just-"
Oh Ignacio, he needed so much help. Caius would have rolled his eyes if he could. "Looks like you made him get flustered, its almost cute," Caius managed to get out, also somewhat muffled, as he couldn't raise their head, but he was able to talk at least.

Mateusz "I can feel my enemy begin to fear my drum I am ready when it comes to pain, I'm numb I can tell you things you won't believe I've done I kill to feel alive."
A small hiccup sounded from the smaller horse's chest, seeming somewhat distracted to focus on the way Varus hid shyly away. His ear twitched at the sound of Caius' voice--well, his tone--voice snuffed as Varus hid away their face into their knees.
Teu leaned over, no longer acknowledging the gods or the drawings, his full attention back on the other. His muzzle brushed lightly against the other's damp cheek, attempting to lure them out of hiding.
"Sorry, love," he mused, a small smile on his face. "I often forget that what is normal in Aodh now is not what it was back then." His tail gently swatted at the other's flank, more of a light brush but it was enough to catch attention. "And Caius, babe, be nice. I'm sure I'll have my chance to get through to you eventually." He snuck several more small butterfly-kisses against their neck and cheek, ending with a nuzzle against where he left his first.
It was quite odd, Mateusz realized as he released another chuckle, the tiny grin on his lips refusing to come down. He hadn't really interacted with another quite like this. With strangers, he was quiet, calculating, and wary. With clients new and old, he was flirtatious, alluring, and intimate.
As he began to sober up, no longer having access to the bitter alcohol that seemed to fuel him regularly, his interactions with Caivarus were gentle and adoring, patient but firm. Playful, even, when the other allowed him to be. He didn't quite know how to respond to it himself, but he decided that it was best to let it be. "Things will fall into place," he murmured aloud, finding refuge back snuggled up to the kirin.
The idea of personal space at this moment was essentially non-existent, boundaries gradually chipping away.
