Brigid | MerchantBrigid had been mentally preparing herself for this trip for a while. She had been glad when the day finally came that she set off with the others. However, she could tell the trip would be miserable. Their leader definitely had a gloomy attitude about the whole situation and she really couldn't be blamed for it. Brigid tried to take at least one horse load off of Mercury's back. After all, Brigid had gone through all this training, once upon a time. It was rough and certainly more so teach inexperienced commoners on the fly.
When the wagon became stuck, Brigid was the first to offer the pair help. She thought maybe getting her teke around one of the wheels might help loosen it. As she pulled with her icy colored grip she began to dig at the mud with her hooves. Getting dirty didn't bother her, especially when their mission was so important.
The pale mare looked to the others for help as well. If they were going to do this, they had to be all in. Brigid glanced at Mercury and gave the mare a soft smile. "Hey, try not to get too worked up. We will make it," she tried to sound helpful, but worried she came off as rude and condescending. That was the exact opposite of what she wanted, after all.

Farsight the Labor SlaveYou may bury my body
Down by the highway side Quiet. A single world he kept to himself, kept replaying it so deeply in his mind, he became the essence of that word. It did not take him long to know, words would not save him, took him longer to learn they yearned to hear him cry at times. The people of Aodh, a tangled mess of them. Some showed kindness, some acted as if he was nothing, and some he preferred treated him like he was never there.
Yet here he was traveling along with strangers, traveling along doing hard work that would have been shared in his own homes, but here. Let the slaves do it. Farsight kept everything buried deep inshide him as he traveled along with them. He refused to speak, no words would be used against him. He came to do a job, that was it. Do the job until it was over, so the next one could begin.
His body used to be thin petite, but now muscles were built, forced upon him. A lifestyle he never asked for. Eyes glanced at the chevalier that tried to help him with the cart. The cart that was now stuck in the mud and he was unable to get it out. A time ago he would have been thankful for the help. Now? It was another strike against him, lessening his worth by the seconds. Then another came, and he felt the panic rise in his throat, this was not good. he need to move it. His damaged and clipped wings bristled out faintly, as he narrowed his eyes darkly. Taking in a deep breath he tried his best to march forwards, hooves and legs caked with mud, but still the wagon gave nothing. The young slave bit back any raw emotions that tried to escape. Not today, not now, he prayed to any of the Gods, even Cascade the sea witch that cursed him so.

Ruby | Commoner
The newly aged up teen honestly didn't know why she had volunteered for this trip. Initially, the idea of seeing Sundown, and the slightest chance to get a glimpse of the towering fortress that was the kirin's stronghold had seemed like a good idea. However, she had figured she'd be able to stand aside while the Chevaliers and labor slaves did their business. Her plan was a little short sided admittedly, but she was absolutely going to refuse to lower herself enough to wade through the mud and muk that was doing its' best to trap the rest of the party. The wind did not lend itself to her as she hovered a few feet above the group. Her wings beat powerfully as they moved closer to the town. It wasn't in her imagination though when she realized the wagon, attached to one of the laborers, had stopped. Looking down, she watched the slave strain and pull, trying in vain to get the cart out of the mud. The chevalier, followed shortly after by one of the other volunteers, got up behind the cart and began pushing, and trying to lift the cart enough to get it unlodged. Not that it was doing them any good, there was no progress as the mud kept its' claim on the wagon. Sighing with an exaggerated eye roll, Ruby lowered herself enough to grasp ahold of one of the wheels. If four of them couldn't get the damn thing out of the mud, Ruby was in favor of ditching the wagon.

Alarik | MerchantPost 1 Word Count: 382
The journey for him had been almost absent-minded. A lot of staring out of train windows and just getting lost in thought. Bell hadn’t come to see him at all in three months. Not since the riots along the gilded bridge. Or the city taking the slaves. It was not like her at all. She at least made the effort to come see him a minimum of once a month. Sure they were both busy but a note, popping her head through the door, sending a message was all good enough too. Maybe she was finally bored of him. It had crossed his mind more than once. So much had happened. He moved into the room above the shop permanently now, after his apartment building set ablaze during the riots. Guessing that's the bad karma he deserved from that day of the riots. Thankfully all that was lost was replaceable material things. Books mostly. But none he couldn’t get another copy of. Just some were more expensive than others. And Mosaic. Thankfully her papers were in order and she was able to return to Alarik and Ray. He was more than glad she was safe and back home.
On the other hand, when Rik signed up for volunteering, he didn’t expect to be sent to the backwash of Eithne. He didn’t want to be any more of a burden that he already felt he was. Mercury was just upset about this journey as the rest of them. But … it was nice to be out of the city. He couldn’t deny that. His legs kept at a walking pace and in a decently straight line at the back of the pack. The ground squelched under his hooves. His legs and underbelly riddled with a green-ish, goopy, wet mud. He was deep in thought again. So much so he almost walked into the back of Mercury, Bridgit, and the cart. He watched Ruby lower herself a bit to push against a wheel. Rolling his eyes as she refused to get dirty. The stallion pressed a shoulder into it. It had to move right. All of them working together should be enough. Alarik began to shout out to the team “On the count of 3! 1…. 2…. 3…. Push!”

Farsight the Labor SlaveYou may bury my body
Down by the highway side Panic rose as he watched everyone join in on this. To help him get the cart out of the mud. Failure, the words was so bitter yet familiar on his tongue and thoughts. A labor slave with no strength was food for the dragon, or so he heard at least. Thankfully with the help of all the wagon was able to creak forwards and out of the mess they got themselves into.
Deep breaths escapes his trembling lips, he was tired and wanted a moment to regain his breath, bu the chevalier cared little, demand they pick up the pace, Farsight had lost them valuable time. The notion hurt, but like everything he'd sleep and forget about it. New day, new him, he'd tell himself. Just pushing away the negative thoughts, to be a different days problem.
Still he obeyed, and he marched forward. It was easier, but he could not ignore the sweat the dripped from his brow, or the way his legs felt like as unstable as a river. Push it all behind him he would work, he would move them forwards, he would do his job, and perhaps if he did it well enough, the idea he got it stuck in the mud would be forgotten. Eyes took in stolen glances of the others wondering why and what purpose they signed up for this trip?

SundownIt isn't long after the mishap with the wagon that you reach your destination. There is no sign to shepherd you into Sundown, but through the gloom of swampy sunset, you can easily make out lights in the distance. As you draw closer, you can see how the small town is built over the murky water, huts settled on ramshackle piers which glow warm gold from their windows. "Welcome." A voice says, and you look to your right to see a unicorn standing among the curling trees. She smiles a little too wide as you make eye contact, and approaches with her tail dragging through the muck and moss. "We don't often get visitors... what brings you to Sundown?"

Alarik | MerchantPost 2 Word Count: 315
The cart groaned as everyone pushed. The wheels grumbled and creaked as they managed to get it moving again. He felt sorry on the slave, having so much weight behind them and through such horrible terrain. The stallion took a breath of relief. Mercury gave him and the others a nod and began continuing on. Alarik gave a smile and stood back to make sure everyone got moving again. Taking a moment to breathe and look back out on the trail behind them. The stallion felt eyes peering at him. His eyes scanned the foliage, looking for the source. But before he could get a decent look, the Chevalier called up ahead. Course, he couldn’t keep the group held up. The stallion broke into a trot to catch up. Falling in behind the group again, but he still had the feeling they were being watched. He kept an eye out, making sure no one was following them.
The sun lurched further and further down the trees. The sun was setting. How fitting, Alarik thought. He was probably the last to see the lights as they entered. But relieved nonetheless. They had been on the move the whole day, he ached and his stomach gurgled. The stallion hoped they had some decent food here, or at least something warm to fill their stomachs. The stallion was startled at the sudden voice. He stiffened up, a shock going through his body. Swallowing hard, his head slowly turned towards the voice. Alariks emerald eyes passed over the unicorns form. A thick, tangled mane draped over their grey toned face. A menacing smile lined their lips. Alarik couldn’t help but feel uneasy. As the mare stepped forward in her greeting, the chestnut took a step back. Holding his tongue. He didn’t like this one bit and any feeling he had before about hunger or exhaustion went out the window.

Brigid | MerchantBrigid was glad to see the others join in the struggle, even if it was with reluctance. After a lot of pushing and pulling on everyone's part, they managed to free the wagon. She glanced with some sorrow in her eyes at the poor slave dragging it along. She almost felt bad enough to say something, but held her words back. Nothing she might say to him would matter. Instead she cast a smile at Mercury, hoping to brighten her mood even the slightest bit. They'd worked through the worst part for the time being. It was funny to her the way everyone seemed so bother by the mud on their legs. She couldn't quite understand, because of her childhood playing on murky beaches, she actually didn't mind getting dirty. But to each their own.
As the sun began to fall, the group finally seemed to reach their destination. Brigid flicked her ears back as a stranger approached them. She knew they probably were there to greet them and speak of whatever problem they were there to help with, but she couldn't shake the unsettling feeling. Something about the stranger gave her the creeps. Shocking, considering the types of horses that passed through her store on a daily basis. But, this was an unfamiliar place with unfamiliar townsfolk. Brigid stayed close to the wagon and awaited a proper response for the stranger. She had no place to take charge here.

SundownThe stranger blinks at you, politely bemused as not a single soul returns her greeting. These Valorians sure aren't very friendly! Or maybe they just didn't understand her accent.
"Gree-tings," She repeats, slower, enunciating each syllable to make sure she's understood across whatever strange language barrier runs amuck. "What - brings - you - to - Sun - down?"

Ruby | Commoner
With the extra body pushing, they managed to get the stupid cart out of the mud, and Ruby immediately released the blasted thing. Annoyed now, and still with no viable place to land without painting her legs and belly in mud, the Pegasus let out a rough sigh and flew back above the group as they continued marching on. She should've just stayed home at this rate, this was getting to be so boring. Up ahead, she spotted lights flickering through the fading rays of the sun. Seeing some rickety looking walkways built over the swamp itself, Ruby glides in low preparing to land primly upon the questionably sturdy wood. However, movement causes her to cease her planned landing, instead lowering herself next to Alarik, grimacing as her hooves sink slightly into the mud. The unicorn that had caught her attention caused a shiver to run down her spine. Her smile was too wide, her voice causing Rub's feathers to fluff in discomfort.
Apparently her voice had caused everyone else to stutter to a halt, much like herself, and she shook herself as the unicorn repeated herself, slowly as if speaking to children. Surprised that Mercury had yet to say anything though, Ruby stepped forward with a practiced ease she certainly wasn't feeling at the moment.
"We're here from Valore, to help with evacuating your.... pleasant little village." Her voice was strained, trying to sound polite and regal, when all she wanted to do was snap at the unicorn to round up all her friends and family so they could be on their way.

SundownThe stranger listened with her head cocked so far to the right it was almost comical. Her eyes widened to the whites as you relayed your reason for being here, and her smile vanished, replaced with a blank slate you couldn't read. She looked at her village.
"No thanks!" She said, turning back to you with a grin far more manufactured. "You should go home."
A pause. Then, more softly spoken: "Please?" "Matilda!" Another voice says, and you turn to see an older pegasus approaching from the main swath of houses. "Are you frightening guests away again? Ignacio's hearth, I've had it up to here..." The pegasus stops just a few feet from your party, and politely bows her head. "My apologies, Captain. I fear my niece isn't the best with strangers. I'm Bramble, Chief Elder of Sundown."
She smiles at you, her expression far less unsettling than that of her kin's. "Did I hear that you've come to help us with our evacuations? The King did send a letter alluding to aid. The village is mostly set for the move, but it's getting dark soon... terrible things come from the swamp after Sundown, you see. We won't be able to leave until sunrise. In the meantime, we're happy to provide board and a meal for the night. This way, Captain - the bridge is sturdy enough to support your laborer's wagon." With a flick of her wings, Bramble headed back across the bridge. Matilda threw you a frown, but said nothing, scuttling after her aunt.

Farsight the Labor SlaveYou may bury my body
Down by the highway side SHould he have been as wary of the stranger as the others? A part of him said yes. To remind him of the strangers that came into Aquore and killed his father and so many others. Or how misplaced trust had left him nearly dead several times. Another part of him said no, why fear an unsettling smile? Why fear this when the most damage had been done to him. He bothered not to speak at first, and watched as the other didnt. the mare spoke again and he couldn't help but chuckle a bit hoarsely at how she said each word. She clearly thought them all dense.
Finally two from the group worked up the courage to say something and Farsight watched with interest a part of him wishing his halter was off his head so he could use his gift to see a little bit into the future to see what would come of it all. Yet the mare seemed to want them gone, surely she just did not want to leave the only place she had called home. A part of him related so deeply to that notion, he did not want to move, but he had moved miles away from his birthplace.
Another came up and apologized for the other one. She didn't have to, but she did none the less. He watched them her mention of family and he missed his own. Zen... He tried not to think of them, he found it painful, to heart wrenching to think what he had done... He always made a mess of things, but as the Capt continued to speak she remarked of staying until sunrise and he nodded. It was for the best and if it was the best way to move them, then it should be done. He came to do a job,and if this was the easiest route, lets take it.
They spoke of a place to rest and Farsight felt himself bit his lip a bit nervously, where was he to go? Surely they did not want a labor slave intermingling with the others. He was city property, a cultured shocked one at that. Ears bent down, he wanted to ask, what about a place for me? Where would I go? Yet the words would not form in his throat and instead he turned his head downwards and let the world continue on without him.

Alarik made himself small as possible behind the cart. He noticeably jumped when Ruby landed next to him, reluctantly giving her a soft smile as she passed him. Ruby and Mercury spoke up to the weird unicorn. Alarik wanting no part of it, at least for the moment. He peered around the cart in surprise as the mare told them to go home. He wanted nothing more than to go back home, but they had come all this way. Besides, it was getting dark and pretty creepy.
The chestnut went to speak up but was interrupted by another voice. His head dashed in their direction. A pegasus. They bowed their head as he did his. Alarik watched Mercury as they interacted with the Captain. The words of “terrible things” causing him to throw his ears back. He moved forward by Ruby’s side. “W-what kind of terrible things?” Generally not aiming the question at anyone but loud enough for Bramble to hear. Concern washed his face but continued to follow her across the wooden bridge. He sneaked a look back at the younger mare. A pout lining her lips, a frown shaping her brow.
The boards creaked under the chestnuts hooves. Was this even safe? All this weight of the cart and the other seven equines. This was probably a bad idea. He treaded softly across the boards. Old and rickety. Covered in a thick layer of algae and mold.

Sundown"Oh, it's best not to discuss them." The Elder said over her shoulder, the words aimed at Alarik. "They know when their name is used, and sometimes they come to it."
Matilda glanced back at the party as well, her frown more evident by the minute. "If you're scared, you can leave."
"Matilda! What did I say! Honestly..." Bramble sighed through her nose. "They don't come into Sundown. The light keeps them away, they're afraid of it. Come now, we've a wonderful dinner waiting in the main hall, and I'm certain there's enough for all of you."
As you discover, the Main Hall is Sundown's largest building. Once an inn, it has since been renovated into community center. The entirety of the town seems to have its meals here, and the residents as more than happy to share bowls of vegetable soup and freshly baked bread with you. You don't see Matilda at dinner. Perhaps that's for the best.
"Our guests are from the Capitol," Bramble explains to the others as you dine, "They've come to help us evacuate. I expect everyone to show them nothing short of hospitality. We'll be packing and leaving come early morning, so I advise an early sleep for all of us."
She seems nice. So do the other villagers. You wish you weren't so exhausted and sore - you surely would have been better company if you weren't. Alas, you are losing energy by the minute, your bones crying for rest.
Once dinner is finished, Bramble leads you upstairs to where a large guest room is still intact. "We've piled enough mattresses in here for all of you," She explains as you enter the room, "Please make yourself comfortable, and if you need anything, the first door downstairs is mine - just knock.
"A word of caution, however. Don't leave the main hall without an escort. It would be terribly dangerous... falling right into the swamp would be the least of your worries."
She smiles apologetically. "But you're plenty safe here, I assure you. Please, get some rest. I'll wake you at first light."

Brigid | MerchantBrigid was suspicious of the second mare that walked up. She seemed a little too welcoming while the other seemed too eager to see them gone. The city certainly was a strange one. Despite how eager Brigid had been to put her former chevalier training to work, she was unhappy with the outcome.
Alas, the group was led to a nice little inn to stay within. She was excited to get a good night's sleep. Although, the words the elder said put Brigid more on edge. What strange things could be lurking in the night? The pale mare's morbid sense of curiosity drove her to want to leave in the night, just to see was foul creatures might be hiding in the darkness.
Brigid waited for the elder to leave before speaking up. "Anyone else a bit suspicious and a bit curious?" She had a wicked grin on her face, ready to sneak out. But, something stopped her. Brigid felt groggy. It was like she'd been slipped something, but she couldn't fathom why. "I uh... I think... we should investigate..." the mare let out a large yawn. Without really paying attention to her own actions, Brigid slumped over to one of the beds. She flopped down and felt her eyelids growing heavier. "Orrr... maybe... nooot..."

Alarik | MerchantPost 4 Word Count: 340
“Best not to discuss them?!” Alariks head went to many places. What could be so bad that they couldn’t discuss them? Why tell them there was anything out there at all. The weird smiling mare piped up. Telling him to leave if he was scared. Gladly. Just point him to the fastest way back to Bloom. His ears fell flat as Bramble continued. He didn’t feel any more relieved on whether they came into the village or not. He continued to follow on with the group. Worry still dug into him.
They were led to the main hall. The commoner had seen bigger buildings back in Valore. But he had to admit, it was cozy. He enjoyed the company and meal. Bramble giving them a warm welcome amongst the other villagers. Alarik was just happy to have some food in him from a long day of travel. The villagers seemed pretty friendly. Perhaps a little too prying of Valorian life. Eventually, Bramble took them to a place they could rest. Rik would have been more than happy to just crash right out. But one of his caravan members piped up. “S-suspicious yes. What could be so scary that you can’t talk about it?” He pondered. “But they seem like decent folk.” He continued. “Perhaps we should set up watches? I know we are all tired.” The chestnut paused to yawn “But if we feel unsafe, it's a possibility.”
Alarik felt weird not having Kigo here. The pup was his safeguard and he would let the stallion know if anything was wrong. But he felt it best for him to stay at home. Just to keep Mosaic company as well as keeping the shop safe after the riots in the past months.
He made his way to a mattress. Testing it with a hoof first. The chestnut began taking off his gear. Laying it by where he had decided to lay. Eventually, he lowered his lanky frame to the bed. Joints clicked and ached and he let out a relieved sigh.

Farsight the Labor SlaveYou may bury my body
Down by the highway side Farsight learned it was best not to voice his concerns, well talk much. He found it lead him to more trouble then what was needed. So as he watched the others, those that came from the swamp lead them around, fed them and care for them. Farsight assumed it was best not to question the niceness. Learned it just wasn't worth his time. But as the night carried on and his belly fuller then it had been in a while, he felt sleep want to take him as they all gathered in the room, with places to lay and relax. Farsight found himself gathering into a far corner.
He laid down feeling both of the walls on him, brought him some kind of comfort. A rare comfort he got at times. A light yawn escaped his lips as he looked around at the others. He was exhausted to say the very least. Another yawn and he nestled deeply into himself and awaited for sleep to take hold of him. Prayed he would dream of Zenith once more, a comfort to him, a will to keep going. He would make it back to them, would return home a changed pegasus. Farsight learned his need to be hero was not something he wanted, learned this lesson the hard way. He shut his eyes hard trying to not cry as he had before. he missed his home with Zen, and not in this foreign place with strangers that cared so little. He sniffled and soon the tension eased from his shoulders as sleep took a hold of him.

Ruby | Commoner
Ruby was not one who liked wasting her time, and usually, helping others when it did not benefit herself was a waste of her time. As such, when the odd one denied their help company, her ears flattened and she was about to unleash a tirade of verbal abuse when an older Pegasus called out. Silencing herself was nearly painful, but the newcomer seemed friendlier than the unicorn, though that wasn't hard to do. Listening to the elder speak left Ruby with a growing sense of dread, that perhaps she shouldn't have chosen to be nosey and volunteer. But she could regret her life choices come morning, after they'd eaten and had a good night sleep. Listening half heartedly to the warnings of... whatever it was that haunted the swamp during the night, Ruby scoffed. Surely they were just trying to spook the group into letting them have another night in this dingy village. How any of them could see the appeal in living in a place like this, she'd never know.
If anything could be said about Ruby, it was her impeccable ability to criticize literally anything. She sniffed disdainfully at the food that was offered, but a rumbling growl from her stomach had her conceding defeat and daintily sipping at the soup. Sitting at the table, it was than that she realized just how tired she was. Granted, she was used to flying quite frequently, but still, her continuous hovering above the boggy swamp was more of a strain since there was little updraft to be found so close to the ground. Leaving half of her soup untouched, she dragged herself to the room piled with mattresses, just barely awake enough to keep her wings pressed primly to her sides.
The slave moved into the corner, the others picking out mattresses, and Ruby found herself flopping on the mattress that was beside Farsight. So used to sleeping near her sister was she, that she unconsciously moved as close to the other Pegasus as she could get. Truly, she was well out of her comfort zone, not that she'd let anyone notice.
Too exhausted to care though, she was asleep before her head even hit her pillow.
