T A F A R I• Talori | Agent to Breim • “That’s the thing about most spies. Sometimes we keep secrets from each other, or even from ourselves.”
The recent days in Nariah had been....eventful, to say the least. Reports had come in of massive fluctuations in the arcane energy that flowed through the city, fluctuations that left the power grid sketchy at best. Things were exploding, the lights went out a few times already, Tafari had already had to chase off a horse that had somehow managed to get onto the roof of the consul’s housing. It was tiring, never knowing when the power was about to go haywire. Because of the unpredictably, Tafari had deemed it in his best interest to stay home for just a time. His contacts wouldn’t be as reliable when tensions were high. On a self appointed house arrest, Tafari had taken to busying himself with menial little tasks around the apartment. He had barely finished straightening the front room when the lights suddenly crackled and flared, sending a ray of ethereal, blinding light to hit him squarely in the face. Screwing his eyes shut tightly, the hippocampus stayed still, doing his best to not run into anything until the lights went back to normal. A few seconds later, the thrumming sound of the arcane energy dimming hit his ears and Tafari was finally able to open his eyes before the lamps went completely out, bathing him in darkness. “Oh gods, not again,” he moaned, smacking is tail against the wall in protest. The crash and shattering of glass that followed made him cringe. Letting out another huff, Tafari slowly worked his way into the kitchenette, making sure that his tail was held high enough so that it wouldn’t drag through any shards of glass. The agent deemed the “scoot and shuffle” method to be best and eventually ended up in the kitchen, smacking his knee on the counter. After letting out a stream of expletives I shan’t repeat, he managed to open the bottom left drawer and retrieve the “candles” he had brought from home. They were his brothers invention, a glass tube filled with various chemicals that glowed when they were shook. After a few seconds of vigorously mixing the chemicals, the little tube began to glow. Holding it as high as his teke would allow, he grabbed the dustpan sitting in the corner and cleared away the broken shards off the floor and dumped them into the trash. He wouldn’t be missing that vase. Once the danger was cleared, Tafari hung the dustpan back up and lifted his head as the sound of a dull thud resounded through the little space. It could’ve come from outside, or deeper in the house, Tafari wasn’t sure, but he called out regardless. “Boris! You there?” He yelled, taking a step forward into the darkness. Before he could even make it out of the kitchen, a wave of... something washed over him, almost as if a gust of wind had brushed against his very soul, and immediately the lights flickered back on. For some inexplicable reason, the pure joy of being able to see again sent Tafari to tears and the huge palomino promptly dropped himself to the floor and sobbed. Some remote, tiny part of his brain knew this was obviously not something that he needed to cry over, but the majority of his brain yelled at that tiny part and told it to shut up.

Boris;Talori | Briem Emissary “Honestly, if you were any slower, you'd be going backward.”
When Boris woke up that morning, he had expected the same old shit. So when the lights went out once again, he simply sighed, stood, and found a candle. He continued to scratch away at his work, paying no mind to what went on around him.
But then, a massive surge caused him to yelp, loudly, as he slammed his head down to hide his face from the light in his eyes. And, with a pop, the light went off again, and he found his candle burnt out. Then, a shiver crawled down his spine, like something was reaching into his skin and yanking. Boris found himself confronted with feelings he couldn't comprehend or understand for his guard, the massive yet gentle hippocampus who pushed him to be great. When he absolutely knew he wasn't. The palomino stumbled to his hooves, beginning to make his way out of the office as best he could.
CRAck He ran straight into the wall. His glasses, his much needed glasses fell from his muzzle and onto the floor, splintering into a thousand glittering pieces. He stared at them, brain running circles around what just happened. His eyes burned and his throat closed up as he stared at the broken frames sitting on the floor. Once again, a tug on his soul, as the lights flickered on. Down the hall, he could hear Tafari breaking into sobs, concerning to say the least. He had never seen the great hippocampus cry before.
Boris slowly left his office, looking at Tafari in the living room. He was blurry without his glasses. The reminder of his broken glasses made him hiccup, and suddenly tears streaked down his cheeks as well. He struggled to reel in his emotions, but they ran rampant. Like a scared foal, little more than a scared boy, he scampered down the hall, dropping beside Tafari and hiding his face in the larger palomino's dreads. A wail broke free unbidden from him.
“I-I broke my glaaaasssseeeesss” He wailed, shoulders shaking.

As Tafari sobbed on the ground, floundering his tail like a toddler throwing a fit, he faintly registered the sound of quick, glancing hoof steps and a suppressed but slowly mounting wail. A second later, the hippocampus felt a shivering body slam itself into his side. The impact barely even made the hippocampus’s body sway, but it was enough to draw his attention. Looking down, he saw his bunkmate and charge with his head buried in his gnarled strands of hair. The pegasus was in tears, his eyes oddly puffy and small. Squinting, Tafari knew something was off and was just about to put two and two together when Boris let out a muffed whimper and wailed again, moaning about his broken glasses. With the tiny palomino nestled into his side like a child, Tafari’s protective instincts immediately kicked in. There was a tiny, small, defenseless creature next to him and by god, he was going to protect it. Without even thinking about it or its possible repercussions, Tafari hooked his leg around Boris’s shaking shoulder and pulled him close. Had there been speech bubbles in this universe, you would’ve seen and heard an audible “pomf” of Boris’s head against Taffy’s extremely fluffy and extremely soothing chest. Ever so gently, the stallion threw all caution to the wind and let his head drop and rest against the white curly waves. The brief moment of contact set off some primordial switch in Tafari’s mind, squishing down the wall that held back the tidal wave of the giant pool of the hippocampus’s gay thoughts. In that moment, Tafari was dragged back to that time in the library where he’d stolen a kiss from the very pegasus now huddled against his chest and felt the tears well up in his eyes again. Screwing his muzzle up in a futile fight against the hot tears, Tafari let out a loud comical sob and curled his thick tail around himself, slapping it against the floor once more. A slow rolling tear made its way down his cheek and Tafari, sniffled again and sobbed, “I freakin love you man.”

Boris was briefly scared by the tail slapping the ground, the sound making some primal part of himself want to leap and run, in turn causing more tears to well and fall down his face. He shivered against Tafari for a long while, sniffling, before the larger of the two hooked a leg around him and pulled him close. And Boris swore that when he hit that fluffy chest, all his sadness evaporated for a moment.
Then, a thread of arcane energy saw, decided it wasn't done messing with Boris's fragile emotions, and basically grabbed his go cart and started spinning him like he hit a banana peel in mario kart. Boris buried his face in Tafari’s fluff, giving a miserable little sniffle as he lay against his side, rubbing his face miserably against his own knee. Tafari was buried in his messy white mane, and the two had been on the floor for a long time.
Then, Boris felt Tafari’s nose scrunch up, and Boris whined.
“Nooo if you cry I cry!” He whined, then the statement after that made him take pause, staring at Tafari like he had grown a second head.
“Whaaaat?” He warbled, swallowing thickly.

The hippocampus regretted the words almost immediately as he’d said them. The mantra of “You fucked up!” ran through his head like a bolting jaguar, banging a set of pots and pans together as it screamed. “I dunno!” He cried indignantly, jerking back just enough to make his hair sway. “You’re just so small, and so...so smart! But you’re really dumb at the same time too! It’s infuriating!” As he rambled, his emotions hit a wave, twisting and warping ever so slightly. The mood in the room shifted, as did the feelings Tafari held in his chest. “Like, you read all these books! So many books! I think I’ve seen more books in this house than I’ve ever seen in my entire life! And you’re witty but you hole yourself up in your room all the time! Like, I try to get to know you. but it seems like you’re always trying to push everything away! I just...” With that, the hippocampus deflated, spent from his crying and ranting. “I don’t get it. I don’t get these...these...” Tafari’s voice buckled and he went quiet. The silence hung in the air for a few moments, and that little nagging thought at the back of his mind wormed it’s way front and center. He took a breath and bit his lip. “Do you remember...when we were kids?”
