Lorelei Melodic Bard They had been travelling for quite a while now. Lorelei was beginning to feel weary in her hooves, but she wouldn’t dare say anything. The weariness was nothing compared to the freedom they felt. Sure they were still on the run, but they left Aodh, and every step they took further from their old homes made her giddy. Instead, she often found herself skipping ahead of the group here and then to lead their little entourage with song as it burst forth from her lungs.
It was hard to have down spirits in the dappled grey’s company. Her hair flowed and flipped with her tunes and her tiny hummingbird companion zipped and zoomed around her head in tune with the music. While she was still practicing and not a professional yet, the harp she had acquired from some fellow bards was serving her well as her bumblebee yellow teke glowed around it, plucking the strings in tune to her music. She didn’t let the mistakes in her playing falter her song, instead finding a way to build her voice around the harp’s sound, making the mistakes seem less like well mistakes and more like they were intended.
While outwardly she was all smiles and perfect pitch, internally she hid her fear well. A part of her felt that no matter how far they travelled, they would be recaptured and branded slaves of Aodh once more. In her mind, she replayed the worst owners she had, the ones Oath’s father Gale had rescued her from. The scars across her body were numerous, more so than even her brother, who was a pit fighter. Many of those came from the master’s daughter, who was jealous Lori was prettier than her. Many came from the master himself, before she learned to not fight his advances, before he broke off her horn.
She did her best to forget those days. She had friends and family beside her. Oath who she originally looked up to as an older brother now perhaps meant more to her, but due to her abuse, she was afraid to even think about any relationship that could be physical. Even with years behind her, she still shied away at a touch, the only one she felt the safest with was her twin brother, the massive behemoth of the group. She assumed that was due in part to their twin relationship. Even separated almost right at birth, she always felt a hole in her heart until they were reunited.
Her hummingbird, dear Melody, broke her from her thoughts. Even though she could sing quite fluidly without thinking, it was the bird’s language that broke even that. Her hard work in learning how to understand that of intelligent animals was another unique trait. While everyone else made a living fighting or stealing, she wasn’t good at much, but she did bring a bit of differentness to the group.
“Lori! Look ahead!” The bird’s voice was high pitched, and she spoke fast, almost a buzz in the equine’s ears. Her blue eyes followed the blue bird’s pointed beak, and a smile broke out across her face.
“Guys! I think we’re almost there!” She whinnied as she sighted the dark scraggy pines that dotted the lower portion of Sirith. The border to Sedo lay within them, so they were almost at their destination.
“To the desert we go, The lands of Sedo, Oh the winds might blow, But here it never will snow.”
“We have travelled so far, I can’t count every star, On our way to the sand bars, This feels so bizarre.”
“We can fight against Aodh, Now that we’ve hit the end of the road, Maybe find a new abode, Or just stick to our family, our code.”
It wasn’t a perfect song, but it rolled off the tongue in rhymes as she danced along with her notes. She was excited, and while she was still afraid Aodh might catch her, especially going to a land where Aodh wages war, nether the less, the other side of the continent made her feel just a little bit safer from their reach.
