C A M I L L A• Breim | Apprentice • “When you open the door to the other side, you might find a new world of possibilities that you never knew existed. Or like, ghosts or some other spooky shit.”
The Rokali house was quiet, much as it always was. The only sounds were the muffled clangs of pots and pans being jostled in the kitchen and the occasional soft click of hoofsteps on the wooden floor. If you were to venture higher in the house, up the set of stairs to the Heart’s right, perhaps you could hear the quiet humming of a brown mare curled up at her desk with a writing quill held delicately in her grasp. The mare was working diligently, writing down a series of musical notes as her mind chased a melody she couldn’t quite seem to catch. It frustrated her, being unable to quite put the song down onto paper. Setting down the pen, Camilla blinked away the pain in her eyes, strained from concentration. Lifting her head, the mare scanned the shelves above her head, simply taking in the tiny figurines and objects collecting dust to give her tired eyes a rest. Her gaze eventually settled on one of these shelves, taking in the sight of the largest gem on in her collection, a chunk of labradorite the size of her hoof. It sat there, glittering on its cushion above her desk almost as if it were calling to her. In a reminiscent mood, Camilla reached up and gently cradled the stone in her teke, bringing it down to rest coldly against her legs. She adored the way it shined in the light as she turned it, grey stone exploding in a rainbow of color as the rays twinkled against its shiny surface. It’s beauty made her smile, then wonder. Perhaps some new gems could renew her muse, and even if not, maybe a quick jaunt into town would do her some good. With that, she stood, letting the silk blanket fall from her back. Camilla moved around her room, tidying up before grabbing her saddlebags and tucking the fallen blanket around her sleeping familiar. She had a shop to visit.
~~~
The shop Camilla had in mind was just a quick walk across the neighborhood. She greeted old friends, dodged eager vendors selling wares, and weaved expertly through the crowded street until she arrived at the doorstep of the shop. Her ear twitched as the bell above her head chimed, alerting the owner to the appearance of a customer. The shopkeep nodded their head in greeting, knowing her and her preferences from past visits. Left to her own devices, Camilla trotted towards a glass cabinet, lowering her head to view the collection locked away inside. Even with all the gorgeous gems arranged neatly on small shelves and tumbled rocks piled high in tiny stone bowls, none of them caught her eye. They were too...perfect. As beautiful as they were, they seemed too clean, too flawless. The mare had often gravitated towards the imperfect ones, the ones with fractures and peculiarities. She observed gem after gem, never finding one that struck her fancy, until she saw it. A large, chunk of something, glimmering and blue and beautiful, shot through with lines of rutile. It was positively huge and next to it sat something nearly as exquisite, this time it was one she recognized. It was an equally large point of Burmese Tourmaline, dark black at the tip and bright pink at the base. She was enchanted by these gems and her excitement only grew as she moved down the case. Each gem she set her eyes on was new to her, various shapes and colors all unique in and of themselves.camilla was so enraptured by the stones that she would never even notice the bell on the door chime once again.
