Zahra | Cadet | Mare
Zahra’s small form shrunk back even more as Shale’s gaze fell upon her, the words, though not directed at her, striking deep at her gut. She knew the malice, the anger, the hatred- none of it was directed at her, but she could feel it festering in the air. It hung in an oppressive tension that threatened to break at any moment, like the ominous presence of dark, swirling clouds just before the onset of a storm. It coiled around her, squeezing the breath from her lungs as the tears slid down her cheeks, and she pressed herself ever closer to the adults, desperate for some form of familiarity.
Then, Dinah was there, the Paladin placing herself between the child and the fallen King.
The Paladin she recognized as one of authority in the Bunker. Her mother trusted her explicitly, with a hint of reverence, and by extension, so did Zahra. There was something innately comforting about having Dinah between herself and the confrontation that was unfolding, even if it was easy to peer around her legs to watch. Zahra’s gaze was drawn upwards as she spoke, and she gave a short nod at the Paladin’s words. A small sniffle escaped her as bent to shake away a few of the loose tears.
More than anything she wanted her mother to be home, but for now the close presence of V and Dinah was enough to ease the worst of her panic.

Shale didn’t miss – couldn’t have – Dinah’s glare at him. He supposed he deserved it, but he was steadfast in his opinion. He was certain Dinah couldn’t really disagree with what he was saying, if only his methods weren’t… optimal. But that was just it. They were out of those kinds of luxuries. They could not keep standing in the fire and pretend to be surprised to get burned. He knew he had no right to decide alone, but he was willing to go to the extremes if it meant the Vindicators would be safer for it. The hazel eyes promised a response, but he didn’t have time to give it, nor was this time for more inner conflict.
He watched the Paladin place herself between the Cadet and the group and he did feel a little ashamed, not that it was very obvious from the unicorn’s face as he turned towards the others with renewed rage that burned silently. He didn’t understand the invisible leash that held the two slaves to the King so tightly. The devotion was admirable, but so very pointless to him.
He listened to Twitch, then Amadeus. Obviously those were just words, and it would take more to convince the Vindicators of actual alignment. “They have always had a real choice-”, Shale pointed sharply. Had they just been willing to leave the little pegasus, they could have been free a long time ago.
He batted his eyes at the question, clearly not having expected that. Pepper? It took him a couple seconds to regain composure. “It is our dragon now, but yes, we do have her.”
He glanced at the Paladin. If the King really was familiar with the wyvern, that might be an asset, but she was right. They had a lot to discuss and consider.
